For anyone reading this I was wondering if there is a way for me to change the dell bios splash screen to another picture, like Tux the penguine or something like that.I've seen alot of people say not to do this due to the editing of the bios and the probability of crashing your system.I was wondering if there was a safe and easy process for doing this???

I've tried to change the screen by editing the grub menu list as told in some forum topics but it makes no change. How do I change my splash screen back to that of ubuntu or ant other image.

View 6 Replies View Relatedi changed the boot up resolution in the boot up loader to 1366*768 (native res of my monitor) the boot option is still set to quiet splash however, instead of showing the progress bar, it would now always display the complete boot up log ( the list of starting services and such) i then manually changed the boot option from to 1024*768 at boot loader screen, and teh splash would show up, but then on next boot up if i stick with 1366*768, it doesnt work again
View 4 Replies View RelatedI my trying to install Ubuntu onto a new 1 TByte Sata HDD on my Dell 8400. The computer has no other OS installed as the old HDD containing Windows XP has being removed. The new hdd has being fully formatted and is set up as a NTFS with a single partition of 1 TByte. I downloaded the latest version of UBuntu and burned it to a cd as a ISO file. When I boot my computer up from this cd I am asked to enter my language of choice and then I get the main menu screen. On this screen I choose option (2) - Install Ubuntu. After a few minutes during which time you can hear the cd being accessed the screen just displays this main menu and never changes. I have tried twice using this install option but after 45-50 minutes the screen still never changes. No progress information is given. If it is normal how long does the installation generally take?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIf I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSince updating my graphics driver on ubuntu 10.10, My splash screen has been inconsistant and messed up. Sometimes ill get random command lines mixed in with the usual splash, sometimes the splash wont show and it will just be black till the desktop appears, sometimes it flashes on and off. I originally tried fixing the resolution and just made the problem worse. Then I tried installing a new splash via gnome-look.org, but it just made my shut-down splash blank and didnt effect my splash at startup. I just want the original splash that ubuntu is supposed to have.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running 64 bit Ubuntu, and on the start-up after I pass the GRUB it goes blank for a minute then briefly shows the splash for 5-10 secs and then jumps to the login screen. Also the screen is offset by about 10-15 pixels but from the login screen onwards it is centred. (It's also like this for if I'm in recovery mode)
How do I fix this and Im wondering if it is a hardware problem?
I recently installed Ubuntu Studio and after an update the standard Plymouth splash screen began to show. I tried changing it back via the "sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth" method but I am getting a blue kbuntu splash screen instead of the ubuntu studio splash.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFor those who wish to change the default login splash background in fedora 14, the offending graphics are to be found in /usr/share/backgrounds/laughlin/default.
Step 1 is to add your preferred ping image alongside the laughlin.png in whichever directory your monitor uses. I am apparently "normalish" so I put my background there. 1280x1024 RGB.
Step 2 - edit the "laughlin.xml" file in the "default" directory, replacing "laughlin.png" with the name of the file you added above.
To get the proper dimensions for an image, you can load laughlin.png into the GIMP and read Image/Properties. While there, you could erase the contents of the image and replace with your own, similar to rinsing out your mouth. Then spit.
If you use a graphic from outside fedora, don't forget to run restorecon on the file, or else SELinux won't allow gdm to display it.

Is there a way to make this as a cd on the Windows machine and boot into that on the Dell? any time Ive updated a bios it has been through Windows.
I set an admin password for the bios of my dell inspiron e1505 laptop. I do know the password. Is there some way for me to delete the admin password so that I can access the BIOS settings without a password?

In KDE, I can navigate to Settings > System Settings > Appearance > Splash Screen but that's not what i'm looking for. I'm not trying to change KDE's Splash Screen that shows when you load the KDE window manager after logging in as a user. Further, I'm not trying to change grub's boot splash image, which renders this guide useless.
I want to change the boot splash theme which lasts 25 seconds that is shown between the time your select the kernel in grub2 and the time gdm loads. Right now it says "Kubuntu" in an ugly way and I want to change it back to what it was originally before I installed KDE. I want it to say "Ubuntu" as it should by default.

I decided to finally change the grub 1.98 splash image today and found a few tutorials on how to do so. They all pretty much said the same thing. Resize an image to 640 x 480, save it as a .tga, stick it in /boot/grub/images/desktop-base. I did so and opened /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme and changed WALLPAPER="/usr/share/images/desktop-base/moreblue-orbit-grub.{png,tga}" to WALLPAPER="/usr/share/images/desktop-base/56871.{png,tga}". After that I ran update-grub. When it told me the image it found, it said it found desktop-grub. I don't know what I did wrong but it's not finding my image. Like an idiot I forgot to back up the original file but the only thing I changed was that WALLPAPER line, like I said. I had copied that version of the file and pasted it in another document before messing around with different parts of the file to see if I could get it to work. Everything ended in failure so I copied the back up in the other document and simply pasted it over the one I had been tinkering with. However, when I try to update grub I get a syntax error which I didn't before with the exact file I have now. The error reads:
/etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme: 65: Syntax error: end of file unexpected (expecting "}")

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed REL 5.5 on this Dell laptop (originally win 7) and everything works ok except when i get to the login GUI the LCD brightness (or lack of) sets to it's lowest so i have to click the f5 button to brighten the screen. If I log out, the LCD resets to the dimmest setting (can hardly make out the login GUI) and again I have to click on f5. I believe I need to update the BIOS but I don't know how. The BIOS update I dound on-line if a xxx.exe file.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe have a RHEL5 box with a 2.6.18 kernel up and running (no RAID in use, but the SAS controller is enabled in the BIOS). To expand the storage, we bought a 2TB drive to add to the machine. Currently the setup is like this:
SATA-0 => DVD-rom
SATA-1 => DVD-rom
SATA-2 => empty
HD-0 => old hard disk
HD-1 => old hard disk
HD-2 => new 2TB drive
HD-3 => empty
The BIOS doesn't seem to have any way to list the drive on any of the HD ports, only the SATA ports, so I'm not sure if the drive is being recognized or not. fdisk -l doesn't seem to recognize the 2 TB drive.
I'm going to try reordering the drive ports and try the drive in another machine, but I'm baffled here...

View 2 Replies View RelatedToday I found out how to change theme in OpenSuse 11.3 64 bit. I'm running KDE 4.4. Naturally I went to KDE-Look.org and trawled it through for eye-candy. I got this HAL-9000 boot splash: HAL-9000 KDE-Look.org
Its a .gz file and uncompressed its called .xpm, I think its just an image, that I should put somewhere, but I don't know where. I tried the bootloader settings through yast, though it didn't tell me anything.
Secondly I got a screensaver, which I'm supposed to compile and install: KCometen4 KDE-Look.org

It mentions some Q_WS_WIN, Q_WS_QWS and Q_WS_MAC, that it doesn't find. Could that be the problem.
I tried to see if the new screensaver got into the screensaver menu, it didn't.
I have a dell inspiron 530 desktop with core 2 quad and 4GB memory, running 32bit vista and 64 bit fedora 10. I searched on the web with "can I install 8GB memory on dell inspiron 530", and got couple of articles that says I only needed a bios upgrade.I downloaded bios version 1.0.18 from dell and run that in Windows to replace bios 1.0.12.After it said upgrade successful and asked me whether I wanted to reboot to have the new bios taking effect, and I said yes. And it shutdown the computer, and never came up Now, when power up, I see nothing, not even the "F2 to setup, F12 to boot menu" message, much less the grub selection. Is there a way to revive the computer?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Vostro with sda and sdb (the latter was installed by myself). I installed FC14 x86 64 onto sdb with /boot being on /dev/sdb8
I did not want to install grub onto /dev/sda as this is a shared machine. I thought that I would be able to use the BIOS's 'select boot device' to select the sdb disk and boot off that and get into FC that way.
fdisk verifies that /dev/sdb8 is marked as bootable and grub (via find /grub/stage1) confirms that it is installed on hd1,7 (ie /dev/sdb8)
However, no matter which hd is choosen as the boot device, Windows is always booted - I change the boot order to use: DVD, sdb, sda but it still boots Windows. It seems like the BIOS only wants to boot sda no matter what.

As you can see, it's a scrambled picture of my Windows desktop. This happens with every other version of Ubuntu also.
I'm running a 64-bit PC and I don't wanna waste another CD or use a USB to install, because I actually progress further in my efforts whenever I use Wubi.
I received the Ubuntu CD by mail the other day and tried to install a dual boot with it. I first tried it out by running from the CD and the first problem I had was the screen froze after the splash screen. So I lurked around for a bit and found out that I can press any key on the screen with the keyboard and person to get to a different screen. At this screen I entered "F6" and then entered "nomodeset", this allowed me to pass the splash screen.
Next, I got into Unbuntu but I found out that the keyboard and mouse weren't working, so I lurked again and found out that I have to enter "noacpi" (sorry if I got that wrong, I forgot the name ). I ran by CD once more and everything worked, so I decided to finally install it next to my Vista. However, after installing it goes straight to the splash screen, and the freezing happens again. The screen where the keyboard and the person are not showing up so I have no idea how add the "nomodeset" and "noacpi". So my question is, how do I get to the screen where I can add both those things? Also, is there a way to add it permanently so I don't have to keep pressing F6?
I was just thinking about installing an operating system like ubuntu or ubuntu server on an external harddrive. this being possible , i would like to know if we can use the external drive to plug into any machine and run my ubuntu by just changing the needed bios mods in that system. and without further having to install the necessary hardware specific devices into my os.
Because each machine would have its own hardware set, how would the os handle it or would it have to install the necessary drivers and so on everytime it comes across a different system from the immediate previous hardware it was used with. and i know this was why laptops were invented even maybe to have that portability to use with but this without a laptop, just an external hard drive that can make up and help us use the hardware at hand with ease without any installations of any kind.
