I have 2 screens connected to my nVidia 8400GS and would like to change my video card settings so that the system boot shows in the Digital screen and not in the Analog one.
View 3 RepliesFinally replaced my incredibly antiquated Ti 4200 with a GeForce 9600 GT, but I'm having a few problems. The main one would be that I can't see anything when I drop to terminal (the monitor shuts off)- I could when I had a spare svga monitor hooked up through an adapter, but now I'm using dual DVI monitors. Do not have an svga cable to spare at the moment. The second seems to be a doublethink problem- a good while back when this computer was a fresh install, I could have sworn I had the option for the resolution 1680x1024- this is an *essential* resolution for twinview, because my second monitor is 1280x1024, and setting this widescreen to 5:4 is just... wrong.Simple restart solved the terminal issue (I hotplugged the monitors). Resolution thing is still a standing issue. I have a 1050 capable monitor, but the display portion is an inch shorter than the widescreen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an image generator (IG) running 64-bit Ubuntu Linux, GNOME & the SAGE application all running through an NVIDIA Quadra FX4500-X2 (dual GPU). Had to install a new FX4700-X2 (and the latest drivers) because 4500's are unavailable. The computer works fine except but I cannot watch the whole boot up sequence on the same DVI port anymore.On the 4500, all video came out the lower DVI port of the GPU with the PCI-X connector (let's call that the "a" GPU). But on the 4700 card, the screens you see during boot are divvied up between the lower DVI port of each GPU. The POST screen through Ubuntu splash screen comes out the "b" GPU while the "a" GPU is blank. The SAGE Initialization page and SAGE Desktop comes out the "a" GPU while the "b" GPU is blank.
I logged in as root and looked for a GNOME menu allowing me to force all video through the same GPU & DVI port, but couldn't find anything remotely close. Any suggestions on where I can look? Technically this IG is working, but I want to fix this to avoid future wild goose chases. The system uses 52 of these IG's.
After having a lot of trouble with vista and no chance of getting Windows 7 anytime soon, I decided to get Ubuntu and use dual booting with vista. I had recently installed it about two days ago and for the most part it worked pretty well. That is until I installed the driver for my video card, an ATI Radeon HD2600 pro, then things went down hill for me. Every time I try and boot Ubuntu it now goes to a black screen after the logo comes up and i am unable to do anything. I have tried to look up some solutions, but I am still relatively new to programing and some of this stuff seems a bit complicated for me. Is there a simple solution to this that does not require a reinstall?

I got a 9400GT but now F11 won't work.When I try the default option: after the media test, the mouse cursor appears and then nothing happens.If I try the second option "using generic video drive" anaconda crashes after I choose my keyboard layout.The Live CD and preupgrade didn't work either.F10 installs perfectly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust got an HP dv6-2150 laptop. Dual boot with Windows 7 and 9.04 (9.10 will not work but that's a different story). The screen resolution is too low and is set at the highest option available (1024x768 which is a 4:3 aspect ratio). The HP uses the new Intel i3-330m chipset with on-board Intel HD graphics. The system is capable of 1366x768 resolution (16:9) - so how do I get it there? xorg.conf looks real generic - nothing specific to Intel.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIf I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

Disk 0 (500GB): Windows Vista
Disk 1 (1TB): Windows 7
Disk 2 (160GB): Ubuntu
My boot disk is Disk 0. Currently when I turn on the PC, GRUB loads from Disk 0. I can then choose either Ubuntu or Windows Loader. If I choose Windows Loader (also located on Disk 0), I can choose to load Windows Vista or Windows 7. I like this setup, but I would like to move the loaders (exactly as they are) to Disk 1 so that I can format Disk 0.

I reinstalled 11.04 kubuntu recently and I no longer could use my second screen.
I looked into my nvidia settings and enabled my second screen (separate x screen).
However when I do so and press apply the second screen does nothing.
This is two desktop monitors and not a laptop and a monitor.
I recently bought a video card for my pc. I had it running pretty nicely on Ubuntu10.10, I started windows and later restarted and after that it wouldn't get past the Graphic cards bios. this is rather odd isn't it? I suspect it maybe dead or that my motherboard bios is stuffed but i reset that too and it still wont go.. The specs are Pentium4 Proccesor 1gb ram motherboard 661gx-m7 Nvidia GeForce FX5200 DDr128mb

3d performance isn't much of an issue, since I don't play computer games. I use the computer mostly for programming, which is why I like having the large resolution, so I don't have to scroll around so much.
I currently use "MSI Radeon HD 3650 Graphics Card - ATi Radeon HD 3650 750MHz - 512MB GDDR3 SDRAM - PCI Express" that have no HDMI and some problems with Ubuntu. Due to the Ubuntu compatibility problems I decided to ask you guys for recommendations before upgrading to a new video card.The only "demand" is that the card must have dual HDMI outputs, one for the monitor and one for the TV.

- can do dual head using DVI and VGA output.
- open source preferably, I've used the nvidia proprietary one before, was fine but kernel upgrades became a pain.
- passive heatsink so it's silent, doesn't need to be a fast card since my other two were both onboard graphics.
- driver can do KMS for nifty high res console.
- most typical features work, so Mplayer plays nicely and can scale to full screen etc. (xv output +/- accelerated decoding)
- even a bit of light 3D for openarena or compiz would be nice.
- don't mind buying second hand if they aren't available new
I've had a Nvidia 7050 on board which was ok, fast enough, but upgrading with the proprietary driver became painful, and that motherboard is dying a flaky death.
- The nouveau driver looked promising, but wasn't really in Debian at that stage. But I did once accidently boot a high res console while testing a brand new kernel (2.6.31 I think) and was blown away Currently got an ATI RS880 [Radeon HD 4200] on board which is fine, 2D is fast enough, but the open source driver isn't finished yet. It can't do dual head (horrible distortion and crashes), can't suspend to ram (freezes), Xvideo and any form of 3D acceleration are missing.
I just got another video card from a friend and I wanted to see if I could get it to display a second screen. I have two monitors, both VGA CRT monitors. The first video card is a Geforce 8400gs pci-e and the card given to me is a Geforce FX 5500 pci. I could get them both to work separately under low graphics mode when I go into the bios and switch the video adapter from pci-e to pci, but not together. What to do to make both cards work in harmony?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have xp installed on the 1st partition and Ubuntu installed on the 2nd.Both partitions are on the same drive.(Being the 1st drive)I have just purchased a new case and some other components and wish to take the opportunity to change my current setup so that xp is on the 1st drive (alone) and Ubuntu on the 2nd drive (alone) Using clonezilla, I take a backup of each partition separately.I then copy back the xp partition to the 1st disk. I then copy back the Ubuntu partition to the 2nd disk.I gather at his point i run the live Ubuntu cd, open a terminal and run sudo update-grub.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have repeatedly installed CentOS 5.5 64-bit on a Dell T3500 with an nVidia Quadro FX 580, in an attempt to get dual monitor support to work to no avail. Everything works fine when just one monitor is plugged in and I do not try to enable or plug in a second monitor. I have installed the Dell DKMS, and the Dell recommended drivers (from Dell site) on one installation, I installed the nVidia drivers (from nVidia site) on another, and have tried with what CentOS loads by default on another. The results are the same every time: When I reboot as directed I get a black screen. I can recover by hard shutdown and unplugging one of the monitors, but that doesn't solve my problem. Has anyone had a similar experience, or have any helpful guidance? I am not very Linux savvy. This is for multiple machines in a corporate environment.

I'm running Lucid (all updates) with an ATI Radeon 3100 video ini a Toshiba Laptop.
I was troubleshooting a problem with XBMC, and tried disableing the propriatary ATI driver. Now ubuntu will not boot. I've tried recovery mode, and it gets to:

And nothing else. I've tried CTRL-ALT-F1 and BACKSPACE, and nothing happens. I know that I just need to re-enable to ATI driver, or possible reconfigure X, but I can't figure out how at this point.
I am trying to streamline my boot screen/GRUB Menu. I know what I want it to look like (grub_wanted.jpg), and I think I know how to get it by uninstalling a couple of things, (synaptic.jpg). Now I have too many items on the screen, and it looks cluttered to me (grub.jpg).

View 1 Replies View Relatedi started ubuntu from 9.04 now using 10.10 on my laptop. problem started when my laptop motherboard got bad beyond repair, and i had installed ubuntu 10.10 on it along with windows 7 (grub, dual boot). now i have pc running windows 7 and installed ubuntu 10.10 using wubi. i want all the settings of my laptop ubuntu 10.10 (programs installed, themes, softwares other configurations etc) to be transferred to this new ubuntu (installed using wubi) on my pc. how to do that? i have attached my laptop hard disk to my pc and am able to boot that installation on my pc, but now i have decided to remove laptop hard disk and use the same settings on pc hard disk.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have recently been trying to change the boot screen (not the Grub screen). I came across a way to change it, however it need to install a .deb file called Zorin Splash Screen Manager.
Zorin is currently unavailable for download, the website seems to be down, as well as the majority of the links I have found to it.
Is there a way to manually switch the default boot screen/animation to the custom ones I've installed? Or, if anyone has a link to the .deb file that would be great too.
I am making a switch over to Ubuntu from windows on one of my kids machines.It has a Nvidia video card, a g-force fx 440 i believe, or something like that.Anyway I just loaded up Ubuntu 10.10 and and it seems it does not recognize my video card. If i go tosystem>administration>Additional drivers, the dialog comes back with "No proprietary drivers are used on this system. Ok so now I go to Ubuntu Software center and search nvidia..... I get the option to installl Nvidia binary x.org driver (version 185), I do so
Now in the Additional drivers dialogue it tells me "this driver is active and currently in use". Awsome, Now when I click on Nvidia X Server settings under system>Administration I get the following dialogue."You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."If i do what that last message said, run sudo nvidia-xconfig in the terminal, It gives an error saying the xconfig file is not there, and it will create one. The next time I reboot Ubunut just shows a black dos like screen asking for username and password. If i put it in, it does nothing, I end up having to re-install ubuntu.
My EVGA 7600GT video card suddenly died. A friend gave me an EVGA GeForce 8400GS to replace. I'm running a homemade AMD Athlon 64 3700 box with 2 GB memory and 2- 250 GB WD hard drives. First drive has Win XP OS and second drive runs Ubuntu 10.04. I was using Ubuntu about 99% of the time before the video failed. After installing new vid card, I deleted old driver in Win and installed new driver off the CD that came with the card. Windows system was then 100% back to normal.
My grub booter is set up to default boot to Ubuntu with Windows the last choice which can be done manually. After installing new Win video driver and confirming it worked, I re-booted the computer and let it go to Ubuntu. The results was the usually flashing cursor for about 10 seconds, but instead of the Ubuntu splash screen popping up, the monitor went black for about a minute and then shut off the same as if I had shut down the computer.
That was over a week ago, Since then I have tried everything I can think of but nothing changes. I have read and tried numerous ideas from other posts on these forums (such as hitting ctrl, alt, +/- to change screen resolution) but I still have a black screen.
I tried booting up from my original install CD which is ver 9.10, not 10.04 (I upgraded to 10.04 by directly downloading online and never made a 10.04 CD). I can get into an Ubuntu desktop with that old CD and I checked to see that it showed the highest resolution for my monitor (a 22" wide flatscreen whose native resolution is high-1920x1280?? don't exactly remember at the moment). I also tried loading the generic Nvidia 185 driver but it didn't seem to take. I downloaded the latest Nvidia driver for Linux onto a thumb drive and tried to install it here, but was refused because the message said it had to go into "root" and I didn't have permission. I don't know how to establish permission when booting from an old install CD. I'm sure I have administration rights under my regular 10.04 installation but can't see it due to the blank screen.
I've tried at boot to go to the recovery mode listed right below the default Ubuntu boot option, but when I do, a whole series of text flashes on the screen and rolls down to the word "done" with a flashing cursor at the very end, The cursor flashes for about 5 seconds and then the screen goes black. I've tried to enter some quick text at the cursor to keep it from going black, but it doesn't stop it. It wants to go black and it does so.
My friend was showing me how to change the splash screen and used a app called start up manager (SUM).He changed the resolutions for GRUB and something else. The GRUB screen resolutions has changed fine but after that I get a line of text which I cant read as its too quick.

I don't get anything until it finally loads X Windows. When my machine is booting up I cannot see the screen because my monitor can't handle it. When I hook it up to my other monitor (1280x1024 capable) I can see the boot up screen. I'd like to be able to see the boot screen in case there are any errors I need to se. How do I change it?

View 6 Replies View Relatedi bought a new laptopt Gateway, core i3, intel video card. I've tested ubuntu and mandriva without good video results. I have installed Fedora 12, i'm using an external lcd samsung screen on the vga port, it works fine. My display properties shows two screen as well as the correct resolutions...the problem it that i can't use my latopt screen, i have tried different resolutions..but nothing. I can't use mi laptopt without an external screen.Even if i boot without my external screen, my laptopt screen goes black.
View 14 Replies View RelatedThe installer has left me with 1,024 by 768 pixels and a driver that will not reach anything like the res my card and monitor will cope with. The display is currently blanking every 30secs or so for a very brief interval as well.
I may have missed something on the install but there didn't seem to be any opertunity to choose either a driver or monitor type. I was eating my dinner through most of it.
I had a brief flirtation with Mandriva and know that linux should be able to nearly fully support my monitor which is 1680x1050 by Belinea. Earlier open suse install gave the option of seting this sort of thing up and listed all of Berlinea's monitors as well.
The card is an nvidia 210 by Asus. Reported as a 200. I do not want to try installing an nvidia driver yet as I understand that there will be problems. Also I have a YAST ipv6 dns problem = no updates.
I recently swapped a hard drive from another computer I was using.The previous computer had nVidia video card (i think it was 9500? something like that), and the new computer has an ATI Radeon 4200 HD video card. Now, when I boot it up on my new comp using the same hard drive, I get a black screen and my monitor just switches from digital, analog, hdmi. I'm guessing that the video card drivers are still installed, but I cannot switch back the hard drive since my other comp is far away from where I live. If I boot up with ubuntu CD however, it loads fine.
I have many important files on the previous install though, and I'm not sure how to get to it. I wouldnt mind reinstalling ubuntu as long as I can get those files back.
