I had to change disk order in bios and now I am unable to boot SUSE. My sda is now sdc(disk ID is still the same in fstab). Should I reinstall GRUB to MBR of hd0 or I will need to do something more.
View 2 RepliesI Currently have the problem of not being able to install xmms on suse 11.3, apparently since there's no way to install it from the packman repos because xmms claims it's missing glib 1.22 -oh yeah that one. But since it worked like a charm on 11.2 i'm just wondering if the glib, gtk, and gdk rpms will be present in the future or have i just missed something. I've tried to compile gtk 1.2 and above on 11.3 but since it is a 64bit system it do not comply with my request.Output from glib-1.2.2 and 1.2.10

I have some trouble booting the current KDE Live Cd (11.2) on my Laptop. I tried USB and CD both. The laptop hangs on the bios bootscreen and I cant select any further option like a boot device. No problem I have with an Ubuntu CD.

My dual proc, dual core Opteron MSI Master2FAR motherboard failed, and I try to boot a disk, used on this board as boot disk, on an Intel based Gigabyte GA-965-DS3. Both systems are x86_64 architecture.
The OS is on both systems is openSUSE 11.1.
On booting the disk on the Gigabyte, the disk is seen correctly by the BIOS, but not by the OS, and there is no /dev/sdX; no /dev/disk/... either. I am taken to a login shell from the ramdisk.
When I just mount this disk on the Gigabyte (booted with the Gigabyte's original boot disk) everything seems fine. No suprise to me, since the disk was fine, and was unmounted gracefully and physically taken off the MSI before the board failed.
I think that the cause lies in the fact that the harddisk controller on the Gigabyte is different from the MSI, and the driver for that controller is not available at boot time.
I have two questions:
- is my assumption correct, or is something else going on?
- if I am right, is there a way to get this disk booting on the Gigabyte (or on another system, for that matter)?
You might want to ask why I want to boot this disk on the Gigabyte in the first place, since I can mount it and see all data on it. I have a reason for that, but telling that story would make this topic too long, and it's too off-topic. Most certainly I will get to that in another topic.

I am seeing a udev error message on booting that I have not seen before with LInux and which I cannot interpret. My Suse 11.4-KDE installation is fairly new. My system is a System 76 PanP4 Pangolin that originally ran Ubuntu.Uname -a returns: Linux linux-zcga 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. My video is a Geforce 9300M with an nVidia driver.A Google search turns up the fact that similar error messages have been reported with Fedora, Ubuntu, Meego and Gentoo. These frequently have had something to do with sound and in at least one case the advised correction was to reinstall udev. I can see where bugs were filed but with no clear response. Some of these go back several years, the most recent is within the last few months. I did not see a posting that involved Suse.
1.Can someone tell me what these error messages mean?
2.Does this pose a problem?Everything seems to work normally on my system once I am through the boot process.
3.If this is a problem how does one fix it?
I want to install a minimal version of linux (probably oS 11.4) onto a partitioned 1TB USB drive to serve as a standalone, bootable restore mechanism for a couple of machines.
First off, is this feasible?
Second, how do I go about it? I was able to install the system to the drive but how do I make that drive bootable? So far, I can't even get it to boot from the grub menu on the first internal hard drive as the system complains loudly about not being able to read disk descriptors and such. I tried the various boot spec (chainloader, menulist, etc) with no luck. Do I need to disconnect all the internal drives then install as if it were the only hard drive in the machine with the DVD reader?
I am assuming that I need some sort of bootstrap code in the MBR of the USB drive to get started but I'm a bit lost here and would appreciate any input, especially from some one who has tried this, before I spend anymore time on it.
Have burned a DVD of 11.4 64bit and am trying to install alongside Windows 7. The boot from the disk starts, I get a SUSE splash screen and initial menu. I check install source (F4) is set to CDROM. When I then select "install" the kernel loads, but then it goes wrong. Whatever I do I get "No repository found". It's almost as though, having loaded the kernel from the DVD, the installer can no longer see the disk.

That said, here's the issue:After years of frustration and problems with Windows XP, my parents finally asked me to install a Linux distro onto their machine. Taking their needs and lack of experience outside Windows in mind, I suggested Ubuntu and Linux Mint to them (as I do to pretty much anyone who wants an easy and beginner-friendly distro). Running first Mint's live session and then Ubuntu's on my own machine to give them an idea of how their new desktop would look, they picked Ubuntu and I grabbed the disk, my external hard drive, and proceeded to back up all their pics, music, docs, etc onto the external.
Once finished, I popped Ubuntu (10.04 LTS) into their machine for a reboot. Realizing when the Windows XP logo came up that the boot order is set to boot from the hard drive first, I went into BIOS and changed the boot order to check the appropriate DVD drive first (they have two DVD drives, both can and have burned onto DVDs without issue), and then the hard drive. Saving my changes and exiting, I did another reboot.I got as far as the splash screen where the dots under the Ubuntu logo lit up as normal, and then after a bit of a wait on my part, suddenly exits to a screen with a prompt telling me a boot device could not be found. Trying again with Linux Mint proved similar.Next I tried simply letting it boot into Windows as normal where I could then use Wubi to install Ubuntu beside Windows but again, the screen got as far as the Windows logo with the blue "loading bar" underneath and then would simply reboot. Having to focus my attention elsewhere for a couple minutes I found out upon return that the system was stuck in an endless loop of rebooting, asking to select between a safe mode, normal boot and last known configuration for Windows, then to the logo and starting over again.I went back into the BIOS and returned the settings to booting from the hard drive first as before (nothing else had been changed), and attempted another reboot. Same loop.I had made a boot "stick" for Ubuntu some time ago, and I've used it once when installing Ubuntu on a friend's laptop which had a broken CD drive. After it wouldn't boot from the USB device I looked in BIOS and selected "look for other devices to boot from" as there was not option to boot from USB in the standard option list (just hard drive, DC/DVD, and disabled). Still no luck.
Calling up my self-proclaimed computer expert uncle, he assured me that returning the BIOS to its default settings would allow it to boot normally back into Windows, probably after performing a disk check.Taking his advice I returned the BIOS to its default settings and reboot. No change, same loop! Frustrated I called him up again, and he said he'd have a look at it when he next gets a chance. heh. That may not be for a while as he is known for taking on projects he can't (or won't) finish.Anyway, tired and now uncertain, I thought perhaps it's something to do with a live disk. I tried an openSUSE installation disk and ended up with "please insert disk 1 into drive" prompt after selecting "install" from the first menu on the disk.
I've been trying to burn Suse 11.2 to a DVD now for a couple of days but I keep running into trouble. When verifying a disk after burning Suse on it it keeps giving me errors. I've tried Nero and ImgBurn, different burners, different ISOs, different burning speeds (downloaded via torrent and http) but it keeps giving me the verification error.
The only thing I haven't tried is a different brand of DVDs but until now I've never had any problems with this brand.

I want ot install a new opensuse 11.4 as yest another OS. Due to the fact that I already have 4 sda partitions, I have to make some changes. What I am thinking about is to copy the sda2 (windows recovery) data to some folder etc (nevermind), then delete the sda2. Then I want to create a new primary partition for the new suse 11.4 and install it. What is worying me is the grub boot menu. I was planning to edit the new one (the opensuse 11.4), with old data.

Now my question is will the settings of (hda0,n), change due to the fact that I have deleted the sda2? I have a lot of unused space at the end of my disk and want to create a new "sda2" there.
How do I control load order in KDE when booting? I would like to load networkmanager 1st and some widget like "remember the milk" last in order. I have a conflict between two ("Remember the milk" is bad coded - but only remote-syncing ToDo widget that I know). When RtM loads, if network is not ready, authentication fails. Then only way to connect it is to kill widget and place it again. whatever the reason, how do I control load order of apps/widgets in KDE?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought this laptop several years ago. It had Vista. Just long enough for me to download SUSe, nuke and pave the HD and install Linux. Recently I upgraded from 1 GB to 4 GB of RAM, the maximum that is allowed given the motherboard (based on from what I am able to learn the Intel 945 chipset).
After upgrading to 4 GB, the machine (according to "My Computer") only sees 2.9 GB. I understand that under an earlier version of the BIOS that the machine would not recognize the RAM correctly. Additionally the "My Computer" page lists the display as "Intel 945GM". My problem is that I can find no Linux utility to flash the BIOS on this machine-- Toshiba only provides the BIOS included in an .exe file for either XP or Vista. I am hesitant to use the BIOS for the Intel 945 series motherboards from their site.
I tried a kde live cd last week and quite liked the unbranded look on booting. I am using 11.4 m1 kde 4.5 and am trying to replicate the look. As I have automatic logon set to 'yes' there are three stages. Have changed the boot option menu graphic OK and workspace upstream but am struggling with the middle part. This still shows the suse green. which file I need to change?

When I get to the screen where I select what drive to install on, there are no drives listed. The hard drives were completely formatted before starting the 13 installation. Do I need to put something on them before Fedora will install?
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust ran into this issue with Suse 11.2. Everytime I try to change the desktop wallpaper, plasma crashes and returns me to the log in screen. This is the first time this has happened and it happens no matter what wallpaper I choose. Desktop effects are OFF. Strange that adding widgets to the desktop does NOT cause this crash, just changing the desktop wallpaper. The computer is using 855GM Intel Chipset.

The trouble is I cannot get to the bios in order to boot from the USB and it says on the box (in very small print) that users cannot install other OSes then the pre-installed Windows CE. Windows CE wont run the Wubi so I can't install ubuntu on it either. How can I bypass these incoviences and get Debian up and running.

For installation, I'm changing the BIOS boot order to boot from network.Once the OS installation is over, I need to manually change the BIOS boot order to boot from hard-disk. I have a new machine arriving tomorrow and plan on installing ubuntu 10.04 x64 and windows 7 professional. I've only ever had a single HDD before, but now I have 2 * 640GB drives.Does it matter what OS I install first?Will I have to change anything relating to the HDDs boot order in the BIOS?I only got 2 HDDs so in the event of needing to reinstall one of the OS's they're on completely different drives. Also, in the eventuality I need to reinstall one of the OSs is it simply a normal reinstall procedure, or because they're on two seperate drives will I need to do anything different?

I used a separate drive and unplugged the windows drive while installing Ubuntu (error number one right?). Ubuntu installed perfectly, plugged in windows drive, Windows boots perfectly. My only problem is that I don't have the boot list option unless I go into the BIOS and change default boot drive every time I want to switch OS.After a bit of research I configured GRUB to allow me to dual boot (Windows did not appear at first), but it boots directly into Ubuntu (fine for me, but my mother uses XP for work) instead of Windows. Unfortunately I have some sort of keyboard issue that makes the arrow keys inoperable until the machine has once booted into an OS.

It is not that i have any complaints about Fedora but trying to get vent to work has been an uphill battle and i like to try many diffrent games and Fedora is just not compatible with all the games i would like to play, anyway my problem is that i cannot boot from the windows install disk i have it just loads Fedora no matter what i do.

There were some issues with the partitions and registries and i want to install Linux over it to fix all issues and make it a working computer again.I burnt the ISO as an image on a cd using, Nero. no problems with the cd. I could not get the Hp to recognize the cd, and it wont boot. So i took the HDD out of the HP and put it into my dell. I can get to the Install part of the setup and that's where it goes to just a black screen with a flashing cursor.I am considering, booting to XP and reformatting the disk, and trying to install it using the HP again.

I've added my own and removed a few of the default icons in the simplified, menu-driven desktop interface. However, the icons are in the order in which they were added (particularly in the "Favourites" tab. How can I rearrange or sort these icons?
I've tried right-clicking the tab and desktop, but no sort option appears. I've tried dragging the icons to the desired spot in the window, but that doesn't work either. Is there a control panel in the "System" tab that will let me sort the icons, or is this not possible in the netbook remix?
