I have found instructions but they are not working. I am new to Ubuntu and have only had a few classes that dealt with Fedora and CentOS. So I am rather new to Linux in general. The drivers say they are compatible with linux kernel 2.6 and later so I am going to assume they should work with ubuntu--am I correct in this assumption? If so, when one installs anything in ubuntu should one be set as the admin?

I'm trying to install the drivers for my Wlan card, I've downloaded the drivers in the tar.gz-file from Broadcom and untar-ed it in my /home/<username>/hybrid_wl-folder and cd'ed to it and I try to run "make" but I get an error: KBUILD_NOPEDANTIC=1 make -C /lib/modules/'uname -r' /build M='pwd' make: *** /lib/modules*2.6.31.5-0.1-default/build: No such file or directory. Stop make: *** [all] Error 2
I'm getting really desperate, I need my Wlan on Wednesday. I'm following the README but this is what I get.
On my desktop, I have Windows 7. I just also installed ubuntu on a partition in order to dual-boot. The installation worked fine, however now I cannot use the internet on either os. I have a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller On Windows 7, the LAN flashes from "Enabled" -> "Identifying" -> "Network cable unplugged". It does this on a seemingly continuous loop. When I disable it, it will not let me enable it. It says it can't start. Also, I uninstalled and re-installed the driver for my ethernet with no change.On Ubuntu, when I try to do "ifconfig eth0 up" and "dhclient eth0" I get the message "No DHCPOFFERS received. No working leases in persistent database - sleeping."

Contrary to Fedora and Mandriva, there is no need to compile the compat-wireless module ar9170usb for OpenSuSE 11.2 because the kernel is very recent and includes this driver. I have freshly installed RHEL 5.4 on a Dell Inspiron with WLAN adapter Broadcom 4318. The original driver bcm43xx did not work. So I installed ndiswrapper for using the windows driver.Now I can connect via DHCP, but when I try to assign a static IP address, it still uses the IP address provided by the router (AVM Fritzbox 7270). I always did ifdown/ifup and the static IP and everything else is present in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1. But ifconfig always shows the IP address assigned by the router. When I switch off the DHCP server of the router I can't connect to the network anymore. The LAN adapter Broadcom 4400 is working well with a static IP address.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI updated Ubuntu to 10.04 after which I noticed the wireless indicator lights on my HP laptop were continually flashing between blue and orange and network performance seemed slow. I did some searching and found and implemented the following change to stop the flashing:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/wlan.conf
Copy and paste the below line:
options iwlcore led_mode=1
Since making this change the wireless connection is shut off and I can;t get it to work at all. I first tried simply to remove the change to get back wher I was, but I can;t do that. Can sopmebopdy toell me at least how to get rid of this wlan,conf file ( it was created by the above command) so I can start over?
Coincidentally since making this change my Windows Vista OS fails to start because of errors attributed to a software or hardware change, of which there were none other than the Ubuntu wlan.conf change. . It may be unrelated but I am suspicious of the coincidence. I am running Vista and Ubuntu in a dual boot configuration and all ha run very well until I did the Ubuntu wlan.conf change.
I am now attempting a complete recovery of my Vista system, since it seems irreparably broken. Again coincidence or not?
(For the record, I have already read the other threads. Either they don't work for me or are too difficult.) My laptop is an Acer TravelMate 250. I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-28 generic i686) after erasing Windows 7. At first, the usb wireless adapter worked. Then, I restarted the PC because of some updates and it didn't work anymore. In "edit connections" I find "Auto SpeedTouch8350DB" which is the wireless connection (on my sis's computer it works). When it tries to connect, I'm asked the password but it doesn't work.

All my experience has been with XP/Vista and Macs and it took some courage to finally try this out. My Belkin F5D9050 wireless(g+ MIMO) usb network card is recognised in yast but does not connect to the internet. On reading through forums I understand that this adaptor uses RAlinks RT73 chipset and support for should already be available in the OS. Is this correct ? If not, where do I get the driver for this and how do I install this. As per the Belkin site, Opensuse driver support isnt listed. Am struggling due to the unfamiliar environment and am not aware of terminal commands.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got an older computer from a friend who had Windows XP as an operating system. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it, but cannot get the wireless controller to work. It is a BCM4303. Yes, it is an old one. So far I have spend virtually nothing on the computer. Ubuntu installed without a hitch as far as I can tell with the exception of this WIFI problem. I have searched the forums but got no matches. Perhaps I am using the wrong key words. Can anyone offer a solution or point me in the general direction.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly new to Linux. I am trying to build and install the drivers for the ASUS USB-N10 wlan usb dongle, using the newest drivers from the Realtek website. I've never used make before on Linux and am running into what are probably some pretty basic problems, but I'm not sure where to look for the answers. I used aptitude to install the "make" and "build-essential" packages. I unpacked the drivers using Archive Manager. I changed to the driver directory and ran "make". It stopped with "No such file or directory." I became superuser and ran make, in case it had permission problems when creating the directory.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought an USB-WLAN stick, which does not recognize any network. A Ralink 802.11 bg WLAN Stick works fine, but the Ralink 802.11 n WLAN Stick does not work unfortunately. Both get recognized by the nm-applet of network manager but only the first one recognizes my network and is able to connect to it.

recently I risked a look to the Linux world and I'm happy so far, but now I've got a Problem, I'm unable to solve by myself. I installed Mint (Julia) on my old Laptop to test Linux. The Laptop has a very old PCMCIA WLAN Card with a Realtek rtl8180 chipset. Everything seems to run perfectly so far with one exception: the WLAN doesn't find any Network to connect although the card and the driver seem to be installed correctly.

I can't get my wlan running, although it already worked on my notebook (Dell Inspiron 1545) with opensuse 11.1. Then I installed debian and, I don't know how, it changed my kernel in grub from .pae to .debug (renameing in grub didn't help)

Router is avm Fritz!Box and is working fine with other notebooks and the lan of the Dell
I loaded down and installed the driver from Bradcom (hybrid-portsrc-x86_32-v5.10.91.9.3.tar.gz)

I can't get WLAN up on my Dell Mini 10v (BCM 4312)/openSUSE 11.3/LXDE. And yes, I have thoroughly read iwfingers's 'Getting your Wireless to Work'. After installing openSUSE 11.3 ifconfig can see eth0, l0 and wlan0. No WLAN running. dsmesq|grep firmware prompts me to '/usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware"
After having done that and reboot ifconfig can only see eth0 and l0. Installing broadcom-wl-5.60.48.36-7.pm.16.4.i586.rpm broadcom-wl-kmp-default-5.60.48.36_k2.6.34.0_12-7.pm.16.4.i586.rpm (current ones from Packman) does, Shall I try to install the drivers without installing the firmware first?
Why does broadcom-wl-kmp-default-5.60.48.36_k2.6.34.0_12-7.pm.16.4.i586.rpm install a new default kernel? Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 had no problems with WLAN.

Being in China has some disadvantages reagardings internet.To enjoy unfiltered speed and access I use my non mainland mobile phone card.
Using LAN works fine in the office.But if I connect the WLAN USB dongle except skype nothing works.

Since a recent update on Stretch, I have been unable to use the network-manager to connect to my home wireless network on my laptop. It was working fine before. I did not change any settings on the WLAN router. I can still connect to other wireless networks at work and university, just not this particular one at home. All other non-Debian devices in my household are still able to connect just fine.While figuring this out, I have tried connecting manualy with ifup but I don't really know how that works. Right now there is only the loopback entry in /etc/network/interfaces.

recently ran into a problem with my internet access. Im using open suse 11.2 on a Dell Vostro 1520 laptop. I managed to get my wlan running and i can use firefox to access my router. In my router the laptop is also showing as connnected, dhcp reserved an ip for it.However if i try to browse the internet, no page is loading, actually no software that needs access to the web is working.

Fortunately, the installation went fine and windows and fedora seems to be working together. But I needed to reinstall Fedora because I didn't do the partitioning right. After that the problem arises. I couldn't connect to the wlan. The first installation it was working fine. Now I can't. I select the network, enter the password and then it just says "Disconnected" or something like that then nothing else happens. So I had to reinstall it again thinking I did something wrong on the installation. But still it wasn't working. But it seems to be working when I boot from the live cd. I must have messed up my network configuration.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI get connected to the internet via a router. The router dials to my provider and is connected to my computers via LAN and WLAN (mostly WLAN, see below). A few days ago I installed Suse11.2 to an old laptop (connected both ways: ethernet with wire and wireless ethernet).
The access to the online repositories worked only after I added the LAN-Adapter (Eth0) to the Demilitarised Zone of the firewall (I did also with the WLAN Adapter).
1. Is this normal?
2. Should I add the network devices now to an other zone?
I want to update my main laptop now from openSuse11.1 to 11.2 via new installation (from DVD) and make this installation right.
Or should I install only the data on the DVD and update after the installation via Yast?
(My main laptop has also an loose contact at the ethernet adapter.)

Now I am using (on my main laptop = Samsung X20) openSuse 11.1 and Gnome 2.24.1 (mostly, 1 account is using KDE) and Kernel Linux 2.6.27.45-01.1-pae. "/home" is on an separated partition (as part of an extended partition). I have also 2 NTFS partitions for Windows XP (System and Data), and a FAT, a root (/) and a swarp partition. My router is a AVM fritzbox 7270 (firewall should be included).
