Ubuntu :: Doesn't Appear On GRUB Listing?

Aug 9, 2010

I have an old Windows XP Media Centre 2005 computer. My sister is the primary user of the computer and she's always downloading viruses and stuff on it so I decided to clean it up a bit and install Ubuntu via Wubi so we could use something that was harder to screw up, easier to use, and faster. I downloaded the iso of Lucid and ran Wubi. The installation worked fine (with the exception of that annoying "no disk" pyrun.exe error, which I had to keep clicking cancel to get out of). I restarted the computer, selected Ubuntu, and Lucid began to install and showed that very well-presented slideshow of Ubuntu's features. It finished, told me to reboot my computer and all seemed well until it reached the boot menu.

When it comes up to XP's boot selector, it gives me the standard list - pick between XP Media Centre and Ubuntu. I selected Ubuntu. Then, it brings me to the GRUB menu. Except, there's no Ubuntu options, just "Dell Recovery Partition" and "Windows XP." I'm positive that Dell Recovery Partition is the factory restore thing since I've used it before, but selecting Windows XP brings be back to XP's OS chooser. It's just an infinite loop until you choose XP from its own OS list.I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but a "skip" button appeared on the installation near the end when it didn't appear to be doing anything, so I clicked it. Would that have affected the install?

I've already googled this problem and I've only come across one thread with this problem, and it was from 2 months ago and didn't seem to have a clear resolution. This problem is pretty depressing considering I've used Wubi on two other computers and never ran into any trouble. Also, I would dual boot but I see no problem with using Wubi since it saves a lot of trouble and there's 95% less chance of breaking something (I've been using it for a month or so on my Dell laptop since my preinstalled Windows Vista KSOD'd and I haven't ran into any complications). Plus, I don't have any blank disks or USBs laying around and I'm not waiting 2 months to get a Ubuntu CD.

I am preparing for RHCE. While doing the lab I renamed /etc/grub/grub.conf as grub1.conf. Now (obviously) system boots on grub> prompt. Can I recover without using a bootable CD? Another problem that I encountered was, while doing lab for fdisk, I used command umount -al. Now, fdisk -l is not listing the partitions but giving a message:- /proc/partitions does not exist. If I reboot the system this is restored.

Networking :: Manager Not Listing All Networks / Doesn't Show Them In The List When Left Click The Tray Icon?

Jul 3, 2010

I have two wifi routers. If I stand next to the main one with my laptop I can connect and access the internet no problem. The other router is in my office, and the bridging is messed up, so while I see the essid and bssid using 'iwlist scanning' and nm-tool, I can't connect to it.

Now, my main router's signal still reaches to my office, just not as strong as the borked router in my office. I need to be able to choose which wifi network to connect to without wasting time walking between rooms. I added entries for both in network-manager, but it doesn't show them in the list when I left click the tray icon! How the do I connect to the network I want?

CentOS 5 :: Grub Doesn't Automatically Boot OS After Install, Hangs At Grub Prompt?

Mar 21, 2011

I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.

When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img

Fedora Installation :: Repair Grub Through Grub-ubstall - /dev/dsa Doesn't Exist

Jan 17, 2009

I am trying to install my laptop in a triple-boot configuration with Fedora 10, Windows XP and Windows 7 beta. I did already installed them in that order. This is how it is layed out on the harddisk:

Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:

All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.

My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Not Booting / LiveCD Doesn't Boot / Grub Recovery Mode Doesn't Boot

Jan 4, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process. With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything

A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode. That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.

Ubuntu :: GRUB Doesn't Show Windows 7?

Aug 15, 2010

Ubuntu Installation :: Why Grub Menu Doesn't Appear?

Dec 30, 2010

I've done a clean install of XP Pro on my HP XW8200 (Boot drive is 2x73GB SCSI drives set up as RAID 1)I've run the Ubuntu 10.10 desktop installer and partitioned the drive, installed ubuntu and rebooted when requested. No OS selection screen appears after POST though. Just goes straight into WinXP. The startup options in XP only show XP.Rebooted from the Ub10.10 live cd and checked that the partition is there and the OS files are there.

Any ideas why the grub menu doesnt appear?I'm assuming it's something to do with Ubuntu not seeing the RAID drive but it did install ok..

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub 2 Doesn't Use Boot Default?

Feb 26, 2010

I loaded Kubuntu 9.1 and got a mess in the Grub 2 Boot Menu, which I can't correct.

I get extra choices in the Boot menu, and the first few, which are supposedly for Kubuntu Karmic Koala all put me in a shell, which ends in a black screen, then shows up a shell once I hit "enter". Then I just have a "intramfs" (?) prompt.

So I went into Grub2 to change it, and it refuses to do it. All I get is a screen full of error messages every time I try, with no change. Apparently it is looking to access drive sdb8, which is non-existent. I DO have a drive sda8, though.

So with all the wonderfulness of the indirect system to change Grub 2 how am I supposed to set it right? The old Grub worked fine, and just took simple changes to the menu.lst file.

Can't somebody write a program that lets Grub 2 be changed from within the program, rather than all this running around trying to find what file to change, and how to get the change to work?

Just to be clear, here are the errors as they show up when grub-update is flailing around:
"error: cannot open '/dev/sdb' while attempting to get disk size
error: cannot open '/dev/sdb' while attempting to get disk size
Generating grub.cfg
error: cannot open '/dev/sdb' while attempting to get disk size

Ubuntu :: 10.04 GRUB Doesn't Boot After Sudden Restart?

Sep 14, 2010

I had Ubuntu 10.04 on my 500GB Samsung drive. Today it suddenly stopped responding, not only X11 but the whole system (Ctrl + alt + f1 didn't worked either) so I had to force restart it. Since then, I can't boot it again - right after memory test and general motherboard splash, the white line cursor goes about 3 lines down of topline and stops there. After about 5 minutes there's still no GRUB menu. Finally I had reinstalled the system (which is not really much pain since my "home" was on other partition than the system, but it didn't helped - still the same. On the other hand, booting USB Live works perfectly fine (I'm using it right now). I have an access to all the partitions, all the data seems to be there, SMART utility says the hdd is healthy ..

Oh, and I tried reinstalling with grub-reinstall before, it said that the reinstallation went fine but didn't helped either

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Doesn't Consistently Start?

Sep 30, 2010

When I restart, GRUB sometimes doesn't start. It just hangs at the flashing cursor before grub.

When I restart again, grub works fine. The flashing cursor shows at the top of the screen for a few seconds, and then there is one or more new lines, and then the grub screen.

This is on an HP Pavilion 640 which is otherwise very stable.

I tried looking through some of the other posts, but I think that I need some direct help with this one. I have tried update-grub and nothing changed.

I don't use Windows often, but it is nice to have the option.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Doesn't Show Up At Startup

May 7, 2011

I have a dual-boot setup with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. Each OS is installed on a separate partition of one hard drive. I read that installing Windows after installing Ubuntu wipes out Grub, so I made sure to install Windows first. Unfortunately, after completing the Ubuntu install and rebooting, I see no sign of the Grub menu. I followed several sets of instructions for reinstalling Grub, and after running grub-update, it appears that Windows 7 was added to Grub, and after examining the grub.cfg file, it appeared that that was the case. Despite appearing to be installed perfectly once inside Ubuntu, Grub doesn't show anything at startup. No matter what I try, I can't seem to make Grub appear, and now I can't get back to Windows 7. Am I missing something, or should I try a different bootloader?
