Ubuntu :: Windows Doesn't Boot - Just Returns To GRUB Menu?
Jul 17, 2010Since upgrading to Lucid (I think), I can't boot into Windows. When I select the Windows Vista entry in GRUB, the screen goes blank for a moment before returning me to the GRUB menu.I have tried pressing 'e' to edit the GRUB entry before booting, and what I find is that it says the root is hd0,1Since my Windows partition is sda1 in GPartEd, should that translate to, for example hd0,0 ?The only reason I want to boot into Windows in the first place is to install a BIOS upgrade from HP, which only works with their Windows software. If someone can suggest an alternative way of doing this then I won't need to boot into Windows at all.

From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

Jan 4, 2011Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process.With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything
A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode.That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.

Jun 10, 2010i wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

Nov 1, 2010I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?

Dec 22, 2010The first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

Dec 30, 2010I've done a clean install of XP Pro on my HP XW8200 (Boot drive is 2x73GB SCSI drives set up as RAID 1)I've run the Ubuntu 10.10 desktop installer and partitioned the drive, installed ubuntu and rebooted when requested.No OS selection screen appears after POST though. Just goes straight into WinXP. The startup options in XP only show XP.Rebooted from the Ub10.10 live cd and checked that the partition is there and the OS files are there.
Any ideas why the grub menu doesnt appear?I'm assuming it's something to do with Ubuntu not seeing the RAID drive but it did install ok..

Jun 5, 2009I've got myself the curious situation where, when I boot the system, I can get grub to start, but it always drops to the prompt.
I can run:configfile /grub/menu.lst
and this brings up the menu with no problems, and from there I can boot the system to either linux or windows. What I don't understand is why it wont go to the menu in the first place?As far as I can tell, grub/Kubuntu got confused when installing, as each of the hd#,# settings in the menu.lst have needed tweaking to let the system boot. (e.g. windows is actually hd0, but the original install had it at hd2. Likewise linux is on hd1, but the menu.lst had it at hd0). I've happily tweaked these to make the system boot, but would appreciate any help in convincing grub to actually load the menu without me having to use the prompt.

Apr 17, 2010I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.

Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.
If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.

Dec 3, 2010I am using Ubuntu 10.10, manually installed, on a Dell Studio 15 laptop, dual booting with Windows 7.While a few kids were playing nearby where I was working, one of the pillows they were playing with hit my laptop's screen and moved the screen's hinge backwards, applying pressure past where the hinge ends. This didn't seem to cause any physical harm to the computer, but I moved away from where they were playing, and in the process, shut the laptop, putting it into sleep mode. I opened the laptop and entered my password to unlock it. About half a second after entering my password and displaying the desktop and open windows, it brought up the password prompt again, as if I'd just opened my laptop up and removed it from standby, although I had not in fact touched it since I had entered my password a mere half second before. I thought that that was strange, and then attempted to continue my work. However, although the mouse worked fine, when I attempted to apply a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+2, which runs a 2-finger scroll script and has to be run every time I take the computer out of standby), Ubuntu didn't register it (I didn't touch the keyboard otherwise, although I should have checked whether it worked all =).
I tried it again, and it still did not apply the script. Then I thought, "Oh, the pillow must have knocked something out of whack. I'll restart." When I restarted, grub loaded as usual, but the timeout ("loading the primary in Xs." sort of thing) that it usually displays did not display this time. I didn't notice it at the time; I selected Ubuntu, and it appeared to be loading it, removing the grub menu, but then hung. I waited 5 minutes for the computer to display the login screen, but it did not, so I restarted again, thinking that it might just be something stupid. It didn't work again, hanging again. I tried this with both the most recent linux kernel and the second most recent kernel, neither of which worked. But what was interesting is that Windows 7, which is also on the grub menu, loaded and displayed perfectly, as did GRUB Invaders, a game that can be loaded directly from grub.After this little escapade, I thought something was just wrong in grub.cfg, and it somehow wasn't mapping the Ubuntu menu entries to the appropriate OS and kernel. So I loaded up a live CD, and attempted to look at the linux entries. These are the menu entries 10_linux, 00_header, and 20_linux_xen.

Apr 30, 2010I tend to update stuff slower than most - I'm still using Hardy and I probably won't upgrade to Lucid until June-ish. I wanted to test drive GRUB2 so I upgraded following instructions here:When I chainloaded GRUB2, I got a menu that only contained Ubuntu; my Windows Vista bootloader entry had disappeared. I couldn't find a sample "40_custom" entry to modify when I tried to create an entry for Vista myself. Had no problem booting into Ubuntu and I could still boot Vista from the old menu. Spent about 20 minutes on it, then I gave up and reinstalled legacy GRUB.

Jan 28, 2011I've installed Ubuntu on my new desktop alongside Windows 7 (each OS is on a separate drive), I seem to have run into a small problem. Let me start with what I did:
- Unplugged 1TB drive from the PSU, BIOS was not seeing my formatted (and thus empty) 500GB drive and I couldn't put it into the boot order at all with the 1TB turned on.
- Loaded up the boot CD and was able to install Ubuntu 10.1 on my 500GB drive.
- Did a bit of configuring, shut my PC off and plugged my 1TB (with Windows 7) drive back in. I tried to see if I could now see my Ubuntu drive in BIOS but nothing is there - just the Windows drive is in the list of available drives to boot from (along with DVD-ROM and USB).
This is where I've run into my problem. What I want is to have a nice GRUB boot menu at the start like any other dual-boot system but just have the two operating systems on separate drives altogether.I did it this way because I was having issues with the advanced partition menu on the boot CD so just went ahead and followed the KISS method by unplugging the Windows drive.
I was told by a friend that if I put my Ubuntu drive into the first position in my boot order and the Windows drive in the second, then I could boot into Ubuntu and run a GRUB update command (he told me to google it) and that would create the necessary GRUB that had the entries for Windows 7 and Ubuntu.Both operating systems are 64-bit, I imagine that might make a difference in whatever help you guys can offer me. I love the hell out of both OS's and want to be able to use them interchangeably.

I originally installed windows XP on a 100gb hard drive, from there i downloaded and burnt ubuntu off so i could install it on my 200gb hard drive. For a little bit i struggled to even get it to install because it wouldn't recognize my onboard nvidia graphics, i ended up having to get an alt boot disk and fix it with technique in this link:

Now after the bios boot, my screen shuts off for awhile and takes me directly to the login screen for ubuntu. No Grub, no windows boot options, nothing. I tried booting windows by choosing it from the bios boot menu but all it does is hang at prompt and doesn't boot at all. I tried the live cd fix and reinstalled grub but nothing changed. What i think is happening is that it boots the Grub menu but it doesn't display it because of graphical confrontations. It hangs for about 10 seconds, the grub default time, and then turns my monitor back on to display the Ubuntu login screen.

Dec 16, 2010I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l
And got this:
Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.
I tried to format the table as it appeared, but the forum corrected the extra spaces.
Ubuntu :: Multiple Boot Options In Grub Boot Menu?
Apr 3, 2010I'm a noob but enjoying dual booting. However, every time I run update manager I get a new vmlinuz entry and now I have multiple boot options in my grub boot menu. Now when I have like 5 ubuntu entries to move past to select Windows. and the latest Ubuntu is always at the bottom so I have to annoyingly scroll down to select the latest there. I don't really understand what the vmlinuzXXX entries in the boot folder are for so I don't want to delete them. I've thought about editing the loop in the 10_linux file in the grub.d folder but it looks like its calling a function or macro or something:

But like I said, I'm a noob to all this (a .Net developer on Windows professionally) and don't understand where this is. It looks like this function call has the logic I need to fix. CentOS 5 :: Grub Doesn't Automatically Boot OS After Install, Hangs At Grub Prompt?
Mar 21, 2011I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot

What I want to know here is:How to I reboot directly into the GRUB menu, forced, without having to rely on the buggy sensing of the SHIFT key? I've heard mention of some variables that can be set, but the 137 mostly nested lines of grub.cfg don't exactly encourage me to experiment.

And, I did read the guide on removing entries from grub 2. The problem is, some of the kernels in the current grub menu are no longer in synaptic on this install. Currently I have WinXP, Ubuntu 8.10, and Ubuntu 9.10 installed. I want to leave 8.10 installed, but not have it available in the Grub menu. How can this be accomplished? Grub 2 seems quite obtuse compared to earlier versions where there was a simple menu file

But, I can find no menu.lst and there is no GRUB menu while booting up, my computer boots right into Ubuntu. So, how do I enable the boot menu so that I can edit it and use it?
