I got the system installes. But it seems that I can't connect to the internet. Trying to pdate the system via gslapt doesn't work. Always says the repositories can't be reached. I use a home network with a skydsl modem and a router. All my other pc's can connect without a problem. It seems that something is not working right here with my Absolute install. I can't even set up a browser or add the Gnome BSG as said with lynx.

I checked task manager the other day and I discovered that on the network history monitor some bits and bites were transfered in a repeating pattern (like a beacon). The transfer rate (when active) is about 149b/s receiving. And about 70b/s sending. What is this?
No Internet-related program was running from my part...In an attempt to pinpoint what was causing this, I occidentally removed the tools located left and right on the time and date. I've rebooted since but still no tools. The 0/I button is also gone.

My PC is connected directly to the cable modem. I would like to use my PC's WiFi card to share my internet connection with my Android phone and laptop so I can avoid buying a wireless router.

I'm a first-time Ubuntu user. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop, creating a dual boot in combination with Windows XP. Unfortunately, I can't get my Wireless Internet to work. It looks to me that Ubuntu somehow doesn't accept my Speedtouch dongle, seeing as the little green light on it stays off. The Ubuntu Help function simply suggests to go to Windows and "turn it on", but when I'm in Windows, it IS on... Also, in the network manager, there are NO wireless networks to choose from.
Futher down is some output from some commands that I see mentioned on forums discussing similar problems.
I think I should stress that I'm using a desktop, not a laptop, and that "hooking it up with a cable" is not an option, due to the distance between the desktop and the modem and the size and weight of the desktop. I would also like to stress that I have no experience managing my own Ubuntu system, so try to keep any instructions as simple as possible.

I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. Everything worked fine, until I rebooted. Now I can not connect to my home wireless internet, so I can't re-enable third party software sources. I am currently using a different computer, so I know that our internet works. I checked the wireless switch on my laptop, and it says that wireless is enabled. I've rebooted, and it still doesn't work. I tried our wired internet, and that didn't work either (although I'm not sure if our wired internet works; we haven't used it in a few years)

today i installed ubuntu 10.10 on my hp mini 210 netbook. previously i had ubuntu netbook remix running and had no problem accessing the internet both wired and wireless; however, since installing 10.10 i have been searching for a solution for the last six hours but have been unable to get either to work.
as far as hardware is concerned i have a broadband bcm4313 802.11 network controller and am running through a linksys router which i know to be working because i have 4 other computers connected to it all with internet access. i checked ifconfig and a lo conection was listed but no eth0. i also tried downloading a broadband tar.gz driver but dont have any packages to build it and cant get any since the computer has no internet. i assume wired is easiest to setup so lets start there even though i use wireless 90% of the time. im new to linux so please dont expect me to know any terminal commands.

I am having trouble getting my wireless internet working on Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. My wireless card works just fine in an earlier version (8.10) of Ubuntu. In fact, it worked right out of the box on Intrepid. However, in 9.10, I can not get it to work. I have installed Wicd Network Manager in it, and it shows no networks visible, even though if I reboot and go into my 8.10 version (I have a multiboot), opening Wicd will immediately show several wireless networks within range. So I'm thinking that the 9.10 version is missing a driver for my wireless card, which 8.10 has.

I recently installed Open SUSE on my HP laptop with a (duh) Broadcom Wifi card. I finally got it to work, but it works very slowly. The max speed I get at my college WiFi is 5 mbits, and at home I can't access the Internet at all ,just the LAN. It works perfectly in Windows on the same machine. At my college the Internet works fine though.Anybody got some tips how to get the speed up and how to get the Internet at home to work?

I am a convert from Ubuntu (9.04 kept freezing on my laptop; when it did work, many packages it seemed were outdated--ie only Eclipse 3.2, rdesktop was messed up [and apparently is also in Fedora]), and I am having some trouble with getting my wireless working.I am running Fedora 11.First off, there is a problem when trying to connect when using DHCP. NetworkManager gets to the second green dot, and then after a short while I am given a message that the connection was disconnected.
Configuring the interface manually, not using DHCP, allows the connection to complete. However, the internet is very slow. There is a 15-30 sec delay before website loading actually commences, and then another delay each time an ad must be fetched from another server. How can I fix this delay? I know I have encountered it in earlier versions of Ubuntu, but I can't remember how I fixed it.About the rdesktop problem, if anyone is able to help [maybe I should post another thread?], the cursor color (the color of the pointer) is inverted---where it should be white it is black, and where it should be black it is white. I use rdesktop a lot to connect to my terminal server in my basement. Any idea how to fix it?

ive just installed ubunutu 10.10 and its connected to the internet via a wireless conection. However I would like to share the connection with an xbox 360 connected to the computer via a ethernet cable. I changed the method under ip4 in the auto eth0 wire connection to "shared to other computers" aplyed and restarted, however whenever the 360 tries to connect itll take a while and then say unable to connect. I also tried this using a ps3 and the ps3 says timed out waiting for ip address. Ive doen this on windows by bridging the connection and it worked without the use of a crossover wire. Would I need a crossover wire?

I am trying to connect my desktop to my laptop over a non-internet connected LAN, but when i enable the LAN connection on my desktop (the one with the wireless) its internet stops working.
it is a very similar problem to this except that i am using ubuntu for the machine with the two connections.
right now i have my wireless on the 192.168.1.* address space, while the LAN is to be on 192.168.5.*
note: my goal is not to share internet with my laptop, just be able to connect to it and the internet at the same time.
desktop: ubuntu 9.10 , wireless and LAN
laptop: windows xp, LAN only

I have a generic P4 desktop computer with Debian Squeeze. Since instalation my wired ethernet connection will slowely slow down and then quit when surfing the web. Sometimes it seems worse than othertimes. If it fails I usualy can get it to come back back up by going to Network Connections and clicking on "wired connection"and them just closing the window. It will work for a bit but the conection will inevitably quit in a short time again. Interstingly it seems mostly a problem with web browsers as doing upgrades, package instalations, using SMXI and things of this sort do not seem to be a problem. I have tried both Epiphany and the Squeeze default Iceweasel with identical results. Also when using Google Earth a similar situation occurs in about 2 minuits of use. The same computer running Debian Lenny with Epiphany and WXP with the dreaded IE do not have this problem.
