I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.
Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.

I have recently bought a new laptop for this purpose. It is a Toshiba L555D-103. It was pre installed with Windows 7 (64 bit). I have now installed Ubuntu 9.10 (32 bit). It works perfectly when wired. But it does not when I try it wireless. It did work wirelessly with Windows 7, and I have many more both stationary and laptops working through the router, so I do not think the router is the problem.I am guessing that there are no drivers for the wireless to function, but I am not sure. I am guessing that there are no drivers for the Ethernet card ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an old Compaq Presario v2000 that recently had Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it. The wired internet worked when it was installed, but the wireless didn't. I tried to download the drivers for it and it failed everytime. I did an update thinking that the update might fix the wireless, but it didn't, it actually made my wired connection stop working. So now I have a newly installed OS on the laptop, and I can't do anything on it because there is no way to get any internet.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI cant get my wired internet connection to work. The command 'dpkg -s pppoeconf' returns ' installed ok installed'. My connection is through a router which is probably in a semi-bridge mode and I need to dial a connection to get the net started. The connection Auto eth0 is setup properly with the correct cloned MAC Address (that of my laptop).
I've also executed 'sudo pppoeconf' and ran the whole series of steps which towards the end said that my connection will be set on boot. However, the net doesnt work directly and I dont know how to dial manually either. 'sudo ifup eth0' returns 'interface eth0 already configured'. I tried some 10-15 threads but none worked. Ubuntu is handicapped without internet.
For the last 3 or so hours I have been trying in vain to simply give my mobile phone wifi internet access from my netbook. I have tried to google and follow some howto's and guides, but they're either too old or don't explain it very well. I'm fairly new to use of Linux and of wireless networks, but can handle setting them up in Windows. So basically, having said that, I believe I mostly understand how this whole thing is supposed to work theoretically but I just feel as though I lack the experience to jump the wireless hurdle AND the Linux hurdle at the same time. I have provided some information below.
- Setup is based on Lucid netbook remix install with a Maverick kernel update due to lack of driver support for wireless NIC - I can confirm wireless does work properly for connection purposes
- I followed [URL] and kind of followed [URL however I couldn't even tell how to run Network Manager, even though Synaptic tells me it is installed
- When I ran into problems trying to install ipmasq I found [URL] and followed what the response told me to which allowed me to restart the dnsmasq and the dhcp3-server at least
- I have restarted the entire netbook several times throughout the process.
I recently purchased an Acer Aspire 1410 notebook running Windows 7 home edition. I installed Ubuntu 2.3 and my wireless and network LAN connection is not working. I saw on a link in this forum, someone was having similar problem. However, when i tried the solution that was recommended/suggested to the person, it did not work for me.

View 8 Replies View Relatedtoday i installed ubuntu 10.10 on my hp mini 210 netbook. previously i had ubuntu netbook remix running and had no problem accessing the internet both wired and wireless; however, since installing 10.10 i have been searching for a solution for the last six hours but have been unable to get either to work.
as far as hardware is concerned i have a broadband bcm4313 802.11 network controller and am running through a linksys router which i know to be working because i have 4 other computers connected to it all with internet access. i checked ifconfig and a lo conection was listed but no eth0. i also tried downloading a broadband tar.gz driver but dont have any packages to build it and cant get any since the computer has no internet. i assume wired is easiest to setup so lets start there even though i use wireless 90% of the time. im new to linux so please dont expect me to know any terminal commands.
After i install it i lost my internet connection . i got a message " Wired Network " " you work offline ". i use cable ADSL ,.... my Pc information HP Pavilion 6700 running with both Window 7 & Ubuntu 10.10 note... my network connection work correctly on W7.

View 6 Replies View RelatedIt's been a while since i've been trying to deal with this problem but it was useless. I've found many related problems to this, most unsolved and those who had solution wouldn't work for me. I have few mates who have the same problem and still didn't find a solution as well. Here's the problem:
Both on my Desktop and Laptop, the network manager won't recognize that there is a cable pluged on the computer so that it would start my connection. The solution to make it work is pretty simple and its everywhere: use pppoeconf.
Altough that does the trick to make my internet work, i get another problem that i found out to be related to this one, which is: I can't use VPN. Which make me assume that one problem is related to the other, is that on my laptop, which has wireless internet, ubuntu will recognize it and then i can simple use vpn. My desktop, on the other hand, isn't that lucky and does not have wireless, so i can't just use vpn. So far, i've been using vpn on windows when needed, but switching systems is really a pain, not to say i'd rather do that on ubuntu.
Few other suggested solutions were to use 'wicd' and other network managers, altough for some people that did work accoding to what i saw on boards, that didn't really work out for me as well. Wicd coldn't recognize it either. Other suggestion was to check on some txt file on ubuntu, erase few information and let it 'fill up' automatic, it didn't work as well(sorry i don't remember all details on this one).
This problem happened on:
First, wubi for ubuntu 9.04
Ubuntu 9.04(normal install.)
Ubuntu 9.10
Happened both on my Desktop and my notebook, but the same version i installed on both of them were used on other computers and they did work on them so i strongly believe it has to do with the os itself.
The problem I have is when I install 10.10 I get no wired connection my wifi works great, just no wired connection. I don't have WiFi where I am right now. It works fine when I run off the dvd , but when I install it i get nothing. I have tried static ip, reinstalling, reinstalling drivers. Don't know what else to do. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720. The ethernet is a broadcom 440x.

I am using wicd as an interface.
It always comes up with the following error: Connection Failed: Bad password.
I have checked the passwords in both wicd and the router.
They seem to be the same. Am I missing something ?
I've just updated my Dell Inspiron Mini to Maverick Meerkat (10.10), and I've very quickly run into quite a few problems. First, it took an awful long time to install all of the updates. Is that normal? Perhaps it's just because I'm using a puny netbook?
When the updates were finished and I rebooted, I logged in without any problems, but then got a gray screen. I've seen that screen before, when Ubuntu loads (especially with Lucid), but it doesn't go away. I rebooted using Desktop Edition instead of Netbook Edition, and there was an improvement, but the top toolbar is blank.Additionally, and most importantly, I can't get an Internet connection of any kind, wired or wireless.
I used the "Upgrade" option the last couple of nights to go from 8.04 LTS and was going to go to latest version. Well got the upgrade done last night on 9.10 and now Broadcom gigabit wired connect will not connect to internet. Can ping router just fine. Just cannot get outside of it. Shows as configuredin ifconfig. But the name of it under the network manager is odd. Its ifupdown (eth0) (default) and maps to ent1.

I've tried using different cables with no luck. I have a Biostar A785G3 motherboard with an integrated Realtek RTL8111DL ethernet controller.

So I can't setup a internet connection wired or wireless. I was just using Kubuntu and did not have this problem. My card is broadcom.

My computer dual-boots Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. In either operating system, the wireless connection is flawless. In Windows, so is the wired connection. But in Ubuntu, there's a lot of trouble with the wired connection -- specifically, while I can connect to the router and to the Internet, and while I can use ping, dig, traceroute, etc., to verify connections to remote hosts, Web browsing, or anything else that uses http, works only for a few Websites, and then only erratically.
I don't believe it is a DNS problem -- testing with ping, dig, etc., demonstrates that, and I have also tried using alternate nameservers. I also don't believe that it is an issue with IPv6, as I've tried the fixes usually suggested, including editing the grub configuration to disable IPv6 support in the kernel and verifying that IPv6 was inactive. I've also tried using local dns servers such as pdns-recursor. None of these things seemed to help.
Also, perhaps unrelated, but disturbing: my computer has locked up a few times while testing the wired connection, and I had to use a hard reset to restart the computer.
I have just setup Ubuntu on my Dell Laptop a Lattitude C640 with a 3Com 3c905C Tornado Wifi Card. Well the wired and wireless do not work. They try to connect then bang no connection. I would be able to make some headway I think but I have no basic skills with Ubuntu. I have mastered how to get info from the terminal but how the heck to you edit a file? NetworkManager gets to the second green dot, and then after a short while I am given a message that the connection was disconnected.
Configuring the interface manually, not using DHCP, allows the connection to complete. However, the internet is very slow. There is a 15-30 sec delay before website loading actually commences, and then another delay each time an ad must be fetched from another server.How can I fix this delay? To be able to connect to the internet I have to enter my MAC address, 2 IPs, netmask and 2 DNS address. When I try to edit the default internet connection eth0 with my correct information, the minute I enter my MAC address and save the changes the network manager creates new internet connection with wrong data and use it instead! I can't select the correct internet connection from the top bar where the internet icon is, because it is just not there. The only connection that I can choice is the new default one with the wrong data! If I try to create new separate internet connection with my correct data the same thing happens! The moment I enter my MAC address and save it, the internet connection disapears from the list of internet connections in the internet area in the top bar and I can't select it. This time with a fresh install from disk the network manager does not see any connections. How can I get the manager to recognise the network and connect to the net?
I realise that it would help if I posted up the output of some commands in a terminal but I am writing this on my phone and can not cut and paste large chunks of text. I can only hope for some advice until I can get to a computer with a working connection.

I've just installed the 64 bit 10.04 onto my new netbook, with ample specs to run the full desktop version rather than the stripped down netbook version. My only problem (at the moment) is that my wired internet connection is not recognized within the operating system, yet while I was downloading/installing Ubuntu it had no problem finding and using the connection then. When I boot into Windows 7 or plug the ethernet cable into my Mac, the connection is established immediately, and no need for manual entering of anything because everything is auto-detected. The really strange thing is I've run Ubuntu off a USB stick and when booting off that the wired connection was immediately recognized after startup.
