Now I would like to share this connection out through my Netgear WGR614 wireless (and wired) router. Any clues? I've tried the simple (GUI) instructions using Network Manager, but just can't seem to get it right. Previously, I had DSL and this plugged nicely into the WGR614 and internet and ethernet access was had by all. Now, I'm a bit confused on how to get the sharing (ethernet and wireless) between my Ubuntu box and the wired/wireless network while at the same time getting Internet access to all through the Ubuntu box.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Studio 1558 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. It's a brilliant piece of hardware and love everything about it except some of it's overheating problems. When I first bought it with Windows 7 pre-installed, it had an application installed on it called PeerNet, which creates a wireless network for other computers (and wifi-enabled phones) to connect to it. Simultaneously, you could also share your internet connection with these users. The internet connection could be either wired or wireless.
My question is, how do I go about finding the same functionality on Ubuntu since I know my hardware is capable of it. (I believe in Windows 7, it creates a virtual adapter that it uses) I know there are ways to share a WIRED internet connections with some help with the terminal, but I haven't found a way to share a WIRELESS internet connection. The network manager allows you to create a wireless network but I'm unable to connect to another wireless network at the same time.
The reason I mentioned mobile phones is because my mobile (Android 2.2) is unable to find a wireless network created by the network manager, but another laptop is (without internet access that is). I've noticed that mobile devices and iPod's aren't able to find ad-hoc networks on Windows PCs as well.
I hope someone out there will be able to find a solution for me (and surely others as well!) Maybe the final release of 11.04 will help out later if nothing turns up now.
i installed ubuntu along side of xp, and i cannot get my wireless to work. the drivers that are installed in xp work great, and i can access the internet, but do not work in ubuntu.

I had thought I heard that if you had a second wireless router, you could use it somehow to detect the wireless router you have already set up in your home (like using a wireless card)? Is this what Ad-Hoc is? Either way, can this be done and if so how? I use a WRT54Gx2 Lynksys router and have a TRENDNET TEW-432BRP wireless router and also a spare D-link DI-514. View 2 Replies View RelatedI moved my server and network equipment, and now the wireless works but I cannot get my server online. I host a website, so this is kind of urgent.
I have a wireless router and can access the internet fine on my laptop. My server is wired & connected to the router. It sets up the networking properly.. ifconfig has an ip address, the default gateway is present. But I cannot ping google, or even the router. It says destination host unreachable.
So I go back to the laptop to check the router settings.. sometimes it likes to assign the server the wrong internal ip. But, I can't access the router settings either! The page (192.168.1.1) times out. Same with trying to ping the router. How can the laptop be online if it can't reach the router?
Oddly, ifconfig on my laptop reports an ip address starting with 99.233. It's always given me an internal address starting with 192.168. What's going on here? Is the router not allocating an internal ip? I use wicd to connect, if it's relevant.
We have a windows laptop that can only get a "local connection". Now it does sound like the router is forwarding directly to my laptop, instead of allocating internal ips.

I want Ethernet connected to desktop A, and wireless connected to another laptop(B), with my laptop acting as an AP. I set the network settings in Firestarter: Internet for wireless, local network for Ethernet. I want to share Internet from laptop B over the network. Internet won't work from my laptop since it seems to use the wrong interface.(Since the desktop is sharing Internet, although not on Internet usually when connected via Ethernet. And of course DNS/Gateway IPs aren't set for wlan0 since it's acting as an AP.) SMB wouldn't work for desktop A and laptop B: laptop B could detect desktop, but reports error "Path not found".
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor the last 3 or so hours I have been trying in vain to simply give my mobile phone wifi internet access from my netbook. I have tried to google and follow some howto's and guides, but they're either too old or don't explain it very well. I'm fairly new to use of Linux and of wireless networks, but can handle setting them up in Windows. So basically, having said that, I believe I mostly understand how this whole thing is supposed to work theoretically but I just feel as though I lack the experience to jump the wireless hurdle AND the Linux hurdle at the same time. I have provided some information below.
- Setup is based on Lucid netbook remix install with a Maverick kernel update due to lack of driver support for wireless NIC - I can confirm wireless does work properly for connection purposes
- I followed [URL] and kind of followed [URL however I couldn't even tell how to run Network Manager, even though Synaptic tells me it is installed
- When I ran into problems trying to install ipmasq I found [URL] and followed what the response told me to which allowed me to restart the dnsmasq and the dhcp3-server at least
- I have restarted the entire netbook several times throughout the process.
I am trying to establish an adhoc connection in my ubuntu 10.10 and share my cable internet throughout this connection with my Android phone. I have read some guides but I couldn't be successful. (I have another windows mobile, and it couldn't connect too). I have installed Firestarter in order to enable internet sharing. My main Problem is that, no one can obtain IP adress from the adhoc connection, whether Firestarter is active or not. What should I do in order to make the other devices gain IP address from this connection. If I have to set static IP what should I do exactly?

I have a windows 7 desktop that is connected to the internet via wireless. The desktop then has an ethernet connection which is shared to the ubuntu server. The network looks like this.
Modem > Router > Desktop > Switch > Ubuntu Server My problem here is that there appears to be no connection from the server to the desktop. The server cannot connect to the internet.

I can connect to the wireless router, however. Same problem for the Apple Macs in the house. We called Dlink. The fix for a Mac was to add DNS servers (4.2.2.2) under TCP/IP But there doesn't seem to be anywhere to specify a DNS server in Ubuntu.

After I configure both modem and the router, I can run my wireless network fine by connecting it from a laptop, but my PC is unable to reach the modem at this configuration.
PC has address 192.168.2.100
Router has address 192.168.2.2
Modem has address 192.168.2.1
all with netmask 255.255.255.0
With bridging configuration in modem and automatic detect configuration in the wireless router, the wireless network run well, except the PC cannot ping the Modem saying that

However, when I try connecting the ends of the ethernet cable on the modem and my wireless router, it's not transmitting. I have a long wired ethernet wire to satisfy my academic needs for the internet at the moment but my mother is not able to surf the internet and it would be more convenient for myself to put the wire back to my desktop and have my laptop browsing wirelessly.
At work, we (like almost everyone) are still full-on windows. I am currently trying to get away from windows because I am not a fan. my current windows machine (different from my Ubuntu machine) is accessing the wireless network fine, and there are no obvious problems there. Also, my Ubuntu machine can access my wireless network at home, so I know there are no driver issues. I set up the connection for the Ubuntu machine, and it seems to be connecting OK. I can ping internal IPs and by all statuses, the connection to the router is functioning. However, when I attempt to load a web page or ping a domain or external IP, it fails. I tried to ping the IP, thinking if that worked, it's probably the DNS, but pinging both domains or IPs fails. I have looked around at forums and posts, but none of them seem to match my issue (that's probably not true, but I am struggling to see the commonality).

This morning my Ubuntu 10.10 Meerkat desktop suddenly lost internet connection, but stayed connected to my netgear router. After the usual "tried turning it off and on again" methods didn't work, I booted into my Win Vista partition to find that connected no problem. I have another Ubuntu netbook and a Windows 7 laptop in the house as well as an Android. These all connect fine. It appears to be just the desktop Ubuntu.
I can ping my router 192.168.0.1 and log into it's UI via browser. I can also ssh to the box. My router does not do any filtering or blocking. I've tried disabling the firewall and changing the nameservers in /etc/network/interfaces and dhclient.conf as well as the network manager. The network card is a Belkin 54g but I can't remember the exact model no. it was bought years ago.

I think something weird is going on. On a fresh installation of 11.04, I seem to be connected to my router just fine, but I can't reach the internet or anywhere else on my network. last night as a download was going the Internet just stopped connection. Then asked me for the WPA & WPA2 personal password. I didn't know what to put since I had already tried multiple pass words I restarted the router.Now for some reason the computer won't pick up the router wireless signal. It picks up multiple connection's around my area so I know that it's not the wireless card. The router is connected via ethernet at the moment so I know the internet works.Do I have to find the ssid? Maybe the router reconfigured it's self when I restart it and broadcasting mode turned off... I just don't know

I have configured my wlan0 to a static IP - 192.168.1.100/24 call iwconfig to configure wlan0
I see the network pop up on my phone, I configure my own statis IP there, 192.168.1.100 as gateway
Success - I can connect to google for about 30 sec.
If I check iwconfig again, there is no longer a essid specified but a "CELL" value instead - and this is changing every 10 sec or so.
With the above I'm quite happy that I've configured everything OK except for iwconfig - why is it dropping my config?
I've a broadcom wifi nic and I'm using ndiswrapper.
AT&T will not help. I am trying to connect with Cable (CAT5). When I try to configure my network card with YaST here is the message received. "Unable to configure the network card becasue the kernal device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly cause by missing firmware (for wlan device) See dmesg output for details"
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am wanting a computer with an external dialup modem (ppp0 modem through a com port /dev/ttys1) to act as a gateway to the internet, forwarding internet traffic through ethernet (eth0 is set to static 192.168.2.2) to a router (the router is 192.168.2.1) where it will be broadcast to other wireless computers like my laptop (192.168.2.3). I've had this setup until recently when the gateway computer (the one with the modem) died. Now I'm replacing that machine with another box and an install of Ubuntu 10.10 but so far things aren't working for me.
Success so far:I have dialup access working on the new box. Took me a while to work out the configuration for getting dialup working, though the IP address is Dynamic (or it won't stay connected), "Check carrier line" is off, and "Ignore Terminal Strings (stupid mode)" is on in order to successfully connect and stay connected to my ISP. I also had to make my normal (non-root) user "lancer" a member of the "pid" group (the reboot) in order to use gnome-ppp as non-root. The laptop (192.168.2.3) is successfully connecting to the router (192.168.2.1) as I can see the router configuration page when I type http://192.168.2.1 into the laptop's web browser. This setup is unchanged from how I had it before when this was previously working and I don't want to change how the router itself is set up. What I want is to know what to fix in the new box in order to get it connected to the router (through ethernet) and bridging the internet through.
My problem is that whenever I plug in the eth0 from the gateway (192.168.2.2) to the router (192.168.2.1), Ubuntu's automatic plug-me-in network detection kicks in and I find my dialup no longer working through some kind of IP conflict (at least that's what I think it is). Maybe I don't have the "gateway" correctly assigned? (in the gateway computer for the ethernet connection, I had it pointing to itself as I don't know what to put for "gateway IP" as that is automatic So, just to check my connection, here I am pinging google (from the gateway computer which has the dialup modem) once a dialup connection has been made.

What do I need to do in order to make Ubuntu of my gateway computer stay connected to my dialup but also simultaneously share an ethernet LAN to my wireless router and feed traffic to the other computers from there? I have googled this but some of the most promising instruction (e.g. http://www.ubuntugeek.com/sharing-in...in-ubuntu.html) call for packages like dnsmasq or ipmasq which seem defunct now in Ubuntu 10.10. Other pages seem to suggest dual-networks "can't be done" in Ubuntu [URL].. (what!?! I had it before my other gateway died)
I have just installed Linux Mint 8 to an Asus A6000. My problem is that the computer won't connect with my wireless router. I have tried with MAC-adress and such, but still no respons. I also tried to connect with a cable to my modem, but no response there either.
I think I may lack some drivers, to what I think is Broadcom b43, but I am not sure. I tried to download the drivers on my other computer, and transfered them to the Asus. I managed to install 2/4 drivers, but on the two others, I get this message "Failed to fetch ... Couldn't reach archive.ubuntu.com"
