Also I have another question, lets say I am connected to an AP but DHCP is disabled, also there is running web interface on AP throught I can set up DHCP and obtain IP address. How do I know what is IP of the AP which I am connected, is there a solution or I have to reset AP ?

Debian Configuration :: Console Only Version Wifi Setup?
Jan 23, 2011I installed the base of Debian (only CD 1) without the desktop environment, so it is console only; also I am dual booting with Windows 7 x64 on this Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop... I have also successfully mounted my usb flash drive and CD drive; the one thing I am finding rather hectic is finding a way to connect to my wireless network with a "WPA2 Personal" Security and "TKIP/AES" Encryption with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card... I doubt that the drivers are actually installed, and Idk how to install them.Google searches on this yield confusing results, so I need help. So far, the most useful help I have found is the link posted here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo ... 29916.aspx but I have no idea on how to install that, if it is even what I need.

Jan 5, 2010I have a system using a Linksys WUSB54B usb wifi adapter that needs the rt2x00/rt2500 modules. Using the fresh install kernel, 2.6.29.6-smp, the modules are there and I get my interface up.
But, when I configure my own kernel, not an smp system, I cannot find the .config option in the menu for rt2x00 network adapter support and the modules are not in /lib/modules/vmlinuz-2.6.29.6-first directory tree after a "make modules_install".
I looked through the configuration menu, but could find no reference to the rt2x00 drivers.

Oct 6, 2010I recently purchased a Netgear WG111v2 802.11g wireless usb adapter for use with an ARM embedded device (loaded with the ARM port of ubuntu). It uses the rtl8187 driver and, when attached to my laptop, connects perfectly through NetworkManager. Unfortunately, I am not working with any ui on my embedded device so I won't have that luxury and must connect via the terminal. Unfortunately, I'm not able to connect this way on either my laptop or the embedded device (they both CAN pick up surrounding AP's through iwlist scan though). I'm able to set the ssid through

I am looking for a good and practical console application. I use midnight commander a lot, and I find it frustrating every time I press the F10 key it displays the drop menu items using the terminal. On occasions I make invisible the menu bar, by disabling in the view menu.
So I am looking for a good console application that when I use midnight commander if I press the function key buttons it doesn't display the drop down menu options.

Software :: Desktop / Terminal Emulator And Drop Down Console
Jun 22, 2009I want to leave KDE (too bloated, got less than 300-400 megs free mem of 4G, mostly consumed by kde&friends) and I need some lightweight replacements for:
1. Desktop: lightweight, highly configurable, with utilities out of the box for: window switching (i.e. fluxbox doesn't have it and it makes me nuts), run command (usually alt+f2, I'm very used to it), virtual desktops.
2. Terminal Emulator: konsole is a very comfortable tool, highly customizable and I like it very much, but again it's very resource expensive. What do I need: no cursor blinking (gnome developers, why do you think it's comfortable? it's killing people), multitab,
utf support, shortcuts customization.
3. And probably a drop-down console like yakuake or tilda (both are consuming too much resources). Requirements are the same as for terminal emulator.
I've spent a week trying to find something fitting this requirements and found nothing.
What I've tried:
Desktops:
fluxbox, openbox, blackbox and other *box:
Major:
1. No window switching dialog
2. Awful run dialog (had to hack it so it reports at least something)
3. No window highlights in tray
4. Lots of problems with window focus minor:
- some awkward position dialog on window movement
- hardly customizable - need to change configs. (yes, I want this to be done via mouse and configuration dialog because it is easier and faster)
icecwm:
Major:
1. looks like a time traveler from 80's
2. problems with window switching
3. no run dialog (had to make it work with grun)
Minor:
1. hardly customizable
Terminal emulators:
lxterminal - mostly ok:
1. awful blinking cursor
2. I've got ctrl-shift mapped to language switching and I'm very used to it.
Tried to hack it: cursor - np, key bindings - bunch of problems, I don't know why, but GDK_CONTROL_MASK | GDK_MOD1_MASK doesn't work = tried to find some widget for setting accelerator keys - no luck.
eterm - very nice:
1. no multitabbing that sux...
mrxvt - the best, but doesn't have a utf support
A bunch of other libvte-based terminals with the same bugs:
1. No configuration options (that stupid cursor blinking and keybindings are hardcoded)
Drop down:
1. tilda - too heavy, no key bindings customization
2. yakuake - the best, but too heavy
3. yeahconsole - didn't even start with screams: 10 XError request

Jun 29, 2011I installed Slackware 13.37 current 32 bit (kernel 2.6.38.7-smp) last saturday and almost everything works fine. I don't understand why I cannot use Ctrl-Ins and Shift-Ins shortcuts for copy and paste in console terminal. Shortcuts works fine in X terminal (fluxbox) Konsole... but they don't in text console.

May 3, 2011im using minimal ubuntu 10.04 and im having trouble connecting to wifi using the terminal. the wifi worked perfectly on the desktop version. i followed this guide [URL] and looks like then i used '/etc/init.d/networking restart' and get this now it seems ive disabled wlan0 as $ sudo lshw -C shows
i tried to enable it again by using 'sudo ifup wlan0' but i get a few errors i think the 2nd errors may be because i tried to download another driver for the wireless using 'wget [URL] and then 'dpkg -i rt3090-dkms_2.3.1.3-0ubuntu0~ppa1_all.deb'

Now the wifi connection was installed in Windows 6 months back with a password and but it got reset to default somehow. Now i want to set password again. Whenever i try to log in 192.168.1.1 in my browser, and Change the password and select Apply . Nothing happens to the page, as if it is static. No Submit Buttons work in this. when I open a graphical terminal in the GUI, I appear as being the same user who ran X in order to enter the GUI, say user_foo, as said by whoami. But a program I usually use in a text console as user_foo, gets Command not found here. Furthermore, the name of the dir I am in does not appear in the prompt, whereas it does when in the text console.
I guess this has something to do with enheriting the environment, but don't know wht to do for this to happen. How do I open this GUI terminal? I do so by choosing among one of several ones in the DE main menu. When I click the menu entry, the terminal doesn't ask for a password.

My problem is that when I try to ssh from my desktop PC terminal into the server with ssh shack1@192.168.1.80, I get in return, shack1@192.168.1.80's password: I type in the password and I then get, Permission denied, please try again. I am putting in the correct password and am stumped......Please excuse my ignorance in this I have been using Ubuntu Desktop for 2-3 years and have been doing decent and am trying to venture out a bit.
