Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Wifi Using Terminal

May 3, 2011

im using minimal ubuntu 10.04 and im having trouble connecting to wifi using the terminal. the wifi worked perfectly on the desktop version. i followed this guide [URL] and looks like then i used '/etc/init.d/networking restart' and get this now it seems ive disabled wlan0 as $ sudo lshw -C shows

i tried to enable it again by using 'sudo ifup wlan0' but i get a few errors i think the 2nd errors may be because i tried to download another driver for the wireless using 'wget [URL] and then 'dpkg -i rt3090-dkms_2.3.1.3-0ubuntu0~ppa1_all.deb'

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Wifi With 192.168.0.x Addresses

Mar 29, 2010

I've happened across a wireless router that has a gateway address of 192.168.0.1 and allots IPs from 192.168.0.64-255. My laptop wouldn't connect to it automatically, so I was playing around and found that it needed 0.x instead of 1.x. I thought the network manager on ubuntu would have figured that out?! Now its a separate story that the router happens to have no admin password

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Neighbors Wifi But Not Mine?

Jan 8, 2010

I am a newbie trying to setup wifi using 9.10 on a compaq nx9010 . The driver is activated for the broadcom 4320 rev 2 chipset. the wifi light is on.I can connect to my neighbors's unsecured network, but not mine which is using personal WPA2 security.

I am using a lynksys Wireless-N Broadband Router WRT160Nv2 I have installed WICD and removed the gnome network manager WICD tries to validate authentication which fails. then it tries to obtain an ip address which fails. finally it says: CONNECTION FAILED: UNABLE TO GET IP ADDRESS". meanwhile it is showing the wireless network at 100% signal.

last nite tried changing wifi channel, changing to WEP, installed and tried WPASUPPLICANT and WPA_GUI. Unfortunately , nothing worked. The wifi controller was able to assosciate with the network but could not authenticate. I'm wondering if the passphrase that I type in on the computer is somehow being turned into a hexidecimal or something so that it does not match what the router has as the pass phrase.

Ubuntu Networking :: SSH Session Freezes After Connecting Over Wifi?

Oct 16, 2010

I am connecting from my WinXP laptop to my Ubuntu Server desktop using PUTTY. The laptop is using Wifi and the desktop is on a wire. I have a D-Link DI-524 wireless router. My session works fine for a while, and then freezes, sometimes after only a few seconds, and sometimes after many minutes. The same thing happens when I use VMWare Server Console to connect from the laptop to the desktop's virtual machines. Other connections between these machines under this setup (RDP, samba, SVN) do not experience problems. I usually do not experience problems establishing the SSH and VMWare connections.I have ended up using Windows Remote Desktop to connect to a Windows XP virtual machine on the desktop, and opening a PUTTY session on that machine. That's a nice workaround, but it makes it so that I have to have that VM running in order to have a reliable SSH session to the box

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting And Staying Connected To Wifi

Jan 27, 2011

I've noticed that switching to Ubuntu about 6 months ago has made it noticeably more difficult to use the free wifi at my school. When I had Windows 7 on the same laptop, it was much easier to establish and maintain a connection. I know it's not the hardware. My question is: is there some security setting that makes it difficult to use public wifi on Ubuntu? Also, I don't have this problem at home on my WPA2 home wifi network.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Won't Finish Connecting - Keeps Asking For Password

Jun 5, 2011

I'm a novice using Ubuntu 10.1 on an Asus EeePC. For several days, my computer has refused to connect to the office wifi, though it's had no trouble doing this in the past. It recognizes the signal, and the wifi icon keeps indicating that it's in the process of connecting, but the process never completes. Every few minutes I'll be asked to re-enter the password. Eventually it gives up.

I'm not sure if this problem extends to other wifi networks or just the one at my office.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To UWF's EDesktop Via Terminal Server Client?

Apr 27, 2011

I'd document here the way to get to eDesktop through linux (debian, ubuntu) at the University of West Florida (UWF), since they appear to only support Windows through their documentation on the University web site, and the link through Argus (the secure web site) doesn't work in Linux. This is sometimes needed to use the University resources (libraries and computer programs) from remote locations, and otherwise a google search is fruitless. I had to have a guy in the computer science department show me how to do it. This may apply for other Universities with similar setups. It was impossible for me to figure it out on my own, I had to go back to my old 9.04 partition to get the info...

1) Open Terminal Server Client (Applications>Internet>...)

2) Insert as follows:

Code:

Computer: eDesktop.uwf.edu
Protocol: RDP
User Name: YOUR USERNAME

[code]...

3) OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED click Save As and save it as a quick connect so you don't have to refer to this again.

4) Flip through the other tabs and configure as desired, and click Connect!

Ubuntu :: Connecting To A Dynamic WEP WiFi Network?

Apr 15 11:39:31 MyComputer wpa_supplicant[1002]: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys

[Code]....

I have googeled that specific error about the WEP line, and it *was* a bug at one time, but according to the bug tracker, it has been fixed. Not so, me thinks.

So, does the specific error above look familiar and does anybody know of a way to fix it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Connecting To Wifi Hangs Natty?

May 12, 2011

Just upgraded to Natty on both my desktop and netbook. Desktop upgrade was a breeze, and I'm liking the changes.Netbook isn't having such a good time however.First login after upgrade (using default gnome settings) played the login sound and froze. No mouse movement/keyboard response. I tried again with Ubuntu Classic - nothing. Finally Ubuntu Classic No Effects did correctly boot/login. I allowed it to perform a proper shutdown (was doing a power flip beforehand), and it was able to boot into normal Ubuntu Unity.

I enabled the wifi module using the laptop's keyboard shortcut, and Ubuntu searched for nearby networks. After finding my prefered network, it started to connect and threw the system into a command console abyss and froze. Tried again on the Ubuntu Class no effects, and it freezes on connecting to a wifi network. If the laptop crashes and I have to perform a power cycle, I can't boot into normal Ubuntu mode. I have to go back into Classic no effects.

Details

OS: Ubuntu 11.04
Previous OS: 10.04 Ubuntu Desktop Edition

Slackware :: Connecting To WiFi On Startup With Shared WEP Key

Apr 24, 2011

I've recently acquired an old HP Pavilion ZT3000 and have decided to install Slackware, but I'm having trouble with the whole rc.inet1 configuration stuff. I've been able to connect to the internet manually with the following command:
Code: iwconfig eth0 essid [access-point-name] key restricted [my-wep-key]
(...and then use "dhcpcd" to get an ip address.)

As you can see, eth0 is my wireless interface. Not exactly sure why (the comp has a IR port, wifi and Ethernet.) I'm using a shared WEP key (I know the security implications of WEP). The key being shared is the reason restricted is a parameter in the iwconfig command. I've been trying to get it working through /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 but I can't seem to setup rc.inet1.config correctly I'm not sure where to set the key to "shared"

I've searched the forums and I could use the working iwconfig command with ./bash_profile as a startup script. This has the problem I need sudo (ie setup /etc/sudoer), which seems like a lot of work, when rc.inet should work. And it also has the problem of having to enter my password THREE times (login, sudo iwconfig and for sudo dhcpcd) which is horrible (and I don't even know how it would work when I set X to begin on startup again). I probably could also install "wicd" but having to ferry across files and trying to setup things without the internet is a pain.
