Fedora :: Looking For A Good Console / Terminal Application?
Jan 2, 2011
Fedora 14 xfce
HP Netbook 210
I am looking for a good and practical console application. I use midnight commander a lot, and I find it frustrating every time I press the F10 key it displays the drop menu items using the terminal. On occasions I make invisible the menu bar, by disabling in the view menu.
So I am looking for a good console application that when I use midnight commander if I press the function key buttons it doesn't display the drop down menu options.

I have a need to start an application on bootup on the linux console and I do not have a need for any type of login or security. I do not need any ALT-F1,F2,etc virtual consoles but I would like to allow SSH access via the network port for debugging, loading, etc.
The application is a SDL graphics program running with fbcon as the SDL_VIDEODRIVER if that matters. I'm currently using Fedora 10 and 12 but any distro that supports SDL using the fbcon framebuffer would be acceptable.

I am quite aware that one can add a startup application to the gnome session by going to System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications (Sessions). But, is there a way to achieve the same thing via the terminal? I want to know because I am writing a simple bash script that installs all of the programs I commonly use. One such program is compiz fusion with fusion-icon.And so I want to add the fusion-icon into the gnome session with my script (strictly within the terminal).

I like the convenience of having a music player that manages the placement of my music files based on the tags of the files, sorting into a root music folder with Artist/Album/01 - Track Title.mp3 sort of hierarchy. Previously, I was using Banshee for this feature, as even most of the other gui music players don't have this library management feature. Now, I've been trying to use console-based applications, and I have been using mpd + ncmpcpp fairly successfully. When I download new music, it is downloaded to a specific folder, and that's not part of my music collection. My previous workflow would be to open a gui filemanager at the downloaded folder, and drag and drop those songs onto banshee, which would then make a copy of those files in my library hierarchy. Currently, I'm doing the same thing, using Banshee only as a sort of import program, then closing it and updating my mpd database, and there we go.
If at all possible, I'd like to automate this to something where I can define a watch folder, and when some magical program sees new music in said watch folder, it identifies the correct place for the files to be copied into my heirarchy, renaming folders and files to the correct format. I know I've written a lot describing, but I don't actually think this too uncommon a task, and I'm wondering if anyone has a solution for my problem.

I'm trying to write a simple, console based application in linux, in c++. I know how to start in Eclipse and I have some experience in c++ from Windoze. I would like to ask, if there is some tutorial available on writing console apps. I mean, I know from using linux that there are two conventions on using parameters in command line (-v and --version for example).

I tried to use NDN [URL] which is fork of famous DN . It's more advanced then Midnight Commander and I would like to use it to better understand Debian FS and do console works there. However, I have a problem and it seems that their support forum does not work, so I thought to ask for general help here, in case it's something that can be set in Debian. Problem is that when I run this manager I can't use arrow keys or 'num pad' or PgUp/PgDn/.... pad but only 'central part' of keyboard - regular keys and Fx buttons. So I was wondering if there could be some problem between terminal emulation and this application that can cause such behaviour which is unacceptable for normal usage, obviously.

The problem is write() system call directly write on console. If we want to write the data on some web page then write() system call will not do that ? What are the differences between shell , console & terminal?
This probably sounds like a stupid question but I'm having a lot of trouble clearly differentiating between a shell (such as Bourne or bash) and the Terminal application in GNOME. I realise that both are completely different but I can't seem to find a clear answer written in text. Could anyone clearly distinguish between both?

I have come across the use of the term terminal, virtual terminals/consoles, real-text terminals but do not understand what terminal refers to. Does it refer to the screen that is in-front of me whilst I post this question or does it refer to something specific?EDITI came across a similar post at What are the differences between shell , console & terminal? and it seems to be similar to the one I posted although am still confused about the use of the sentence Decades ago, this was a physical device consisting of little more than a monitor and keyboard. What does this device look like and how is different to a monitor?

I want to leave KDE (too bloated, got less than 300-400 megs free mem of 4G, mostly consumed by kde&friends) and I need some lightweight replacements for:
1. Desktop: lightweight, highly configurable, with utilities out of the box for: window switching (i.e. fluxbox doesn't have it and it makes me nuts), run command (usually alt+f2, I'm very used to it), virtual desktops.
2. Terminal Emulator: konsole is a very comfortable tool, highly customizable and I like it very much, but again it's very resource expensive. What do I need: no cursor blinking (gnome developers, why do you think it's comfortable? it's killing people), multitab,
utf support, shortcuts customization.
3. And probably a drop-down console like yakuake or tilda (both are consuming too much resources). Requirements are the same as for terminal emulator.
I've spent a week trying to find something fitting this requirements and found nothing.
What I've tried:
Desktops:
fluxbox, openbox, blackbox and other *box:
Major:
1. No window switching dialog
2. Awful run dialog (had to hack it so it reports at least something)
3. No window highlights in tray
4. Lots of problems with window focus minor:
- some awkward position dialog on window movement
- hardly customizable - need to change configs. (yes, I want this to be done via mouse and configuration dialog because it is easier and faster)
icecwm:
Major:
1. looks like a time traveler from 80's
2. problems with window switching
3. no run dialog (had to make it work with grun)
Minor:
1. hardly customizable
Terminal emulators:
lxterminal - mostly ok:
1. awful blinking cursor
2. I've got ctrl-shift mapped to language switching and I'm very used to it.
Tried to hack it: cursor - np, key bindings - bunch of problems, I don't know why, but GDK_CONTROL_MASK | GDK_MOD1_MASK doesn't work = tried to find some widget for setting accelerator keys - no luck.
eterm - very nice:
1. no multitabbing that sux...
mrxvt - the best, but doesn't have a utf support
A bunch of other libvte-based terminals with the same bugs:
1. No configuration options (that stupid cursor blinking and keybindings are hardcoded)
Drop down:
1. tilda - too heavy, no key bindings customization
2. yakuake - the best, but too heavy
3. yeahconsole - didn't even start with screams: 10 XError request

I installed Slackware 13.37 current 32 bit (kernel 2.6.38.7-smp) last saturday and almost everything works fine. I don't understand why I cannot use Ctrl-Ins and Shift-Ins shortcuts for copy and paste in console terminal. Shortcuts works fine in X terminal (fluxbox) Konsole... but they don't in text console.

I have two quick questions:
1) What is the easiest way to find an applications name so that I can run it in terminal rather than from the apps menu? I have installed programs before and tried to run them using the terminal and couldnt for not knowing the name to put in terminal
2) Does Clam AV automatically update when update manager is run? I sometimes get an "update failed" message when I try to run it from the GUI.

I have a binary application that runs only in shell, now I want to open it from another application(Mathematica program) but simply invoking it will start it in memory but not in a shell.
I tryed "bash app" which does not work and "gnome-terminal app" just opens the terminal without launching that application.
Ps: Its the same thing as in Java when you want to invoke a system command like
ping but you need to do it like this .exec("cmd ping") instead of just ping.
