I had a program print lot of data on the terminal. The terminal scrolled over and now I cannot see all the data. Some of it is lost. How do I get it back ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Fedora 12 for some Linux testing. When I switch between virtual terminals (CTRL-f1 Ctrl-f2) I can no longer scroll back in the VT I left and came back to. Any new data created will be scrollable, but i can never get back to before the switch. I'm sure this used to work (several years ago). Was this introduced as a security feature to prevent left over data on VTs from being seen by the wrong eyes? If so, is there a way to get the old functionality back?

This probably sounds like a stupid question but I'm having a lot of trouble clearly differentiating between a shell (such as Bourne or bash) and the Terminal application in GNOME. I realise that both are completely different but I can't seem to find a clear answer written in text. Could anyone clearly distinguish between both?
I have come across the use of the term terminal, virtual terminals/consoles, real-text terminals but do not understand what terminal refers to. What is the difference between shell , console & terminal?
I installed Slackware 13.37 current 32 bit (kernel 2.6.38.7-smp) last saturday and almost everything works fine. I don't understand why I cannot use Ctrl-Ins and Shift-Ins shortcuts for copy and paste in console terminal. Shortcuts works fine in X terminal (fluxbox) Konsole... but they don't in text console.
View 2 Replies View RelatedLinux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"
In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.
P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!
I really enjoyed using Apple's wireless Mighty Mouse and Magic mouse because of their ability to easily touch scroll 360 degrees. Unfortunately, Linux drivers are not provided for these mice.Is there an equivalent wireless mouse that works well in Linux? Ideally with native support or community provided drivers, etc.

The scrolling arrows are gone.Well this scrolling tab often vanishes before I can click on it to scroll down. Is there a way to revert to the old style, like the scrolling mechanism on these forums? It is nice to have the option of the arrows on top and bottom, along with the scroll tab thing.

I am looking for a good and practical console application. I use midnight commander a lot, and I find it frustrating every time I press the F10 key it displays the drop menu items using the terminal. On occasions I make invisible the menu bar, by disabling in the view menu.
So I am looking for a good console application that when I use midnight commander if I press the function key buttons it doesn't display the drop down menu options.
1. Can you configure wifi while netmanager is running?
2. How do you do above in terminal? what commands do you use?
i create a file with .py extension and run it then on windows it opens up directly in command prompt, but wat to do if i wish to do the same in ubuntu, i.e. i want the .py file to run in terminal as a console program, which does not happen as such.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI want to leave KDE (too bloated, got less than 300-400 megs free mem of 4G, mostly consumed by kde&friends) and I need some lightweight replacements for:
1. Desktop: lightweight, highly configurable, with utilities out of the box for: window switching (i.e. fluxbox doesn't have it and it makes me nuts), run command (usually alt+f2, I'm very used to it), virtual desktops.
2. Terminal Emulator: konsole is a very comfortable tool, highly customizable and I like it very much, but again it's very resource expensive. What do I need: no cursor blinking (gnome developers, why do you think it's comfortable? it's killing people), multitab,
utf support, shortcuts customization.
3. And probably a drop-down console like yakuake or tilda (both are consuming too much resources). Requirements are the same as for terminal emulator.
I've spent a week trying to find something fitting this requirements and found nothing.
What I've tried:
Desktops:
fluxbox, openbox, blackbox and other *box:
Major:
1. No window switching dialog
2. Awful run dialog (had to hack it so it reports at least something)
3. No window highlights in tray
4. Lots of problems with window focus minor:
- some awkward position dialog on window movement
- hardly customizable - need to change configs. (yes, I want this to be done via mouse and configuration dialog because it is easier and faster)
icecwm:
Major:
1. looks like a time traveler from 80's
2. problems with window switching
3. no run dialog (had to make it work with grun)
Minor:
1. hardly customizable
Terminal emulators:
lxterminal - mostly ok:
1. awful blinking cursor
2. I've got ctrl-shift mapped to language switching and I'm very used to it.
Tried to hack it: cursor - np, key bindings - bunch of problems, I don't know why, but GDK_CONTROL_MASK | GDK_MOD1_MASK doesn't work = tried to find some widget for setting accelerator keys - no luck.
eterm - very nice:
1. no multitabbing that sux...
mrxvt - the best, but doesn't have a utf support
A bunch of other libvte-based terminals with the same bugs:
1. No configuration options (that stupid cursor blinking and keybindings are hardcoded)
Drop down:
1. tilda - too heavy, no key bindings customization
2. yakuake - the best, but too heavy
3. yeahconsole - didn't even start with screams: 10 XError request
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Scrolling the Terminal window up/down works fine using the SHIFT+PAGEUP / PAGEDOWN key combination.
Many times I feel like scrolling the window, line by line to investigate the output minutely. I am wondering if there is a keyboard shortcut to scroll the Terminal up/down line by line?
Moreover, I suddenly happened to discover that SHIFT+CTRL+UP Arrow /DOWN Arrow scrolls my terminal window up and down line by line. I am glad to see that working. But it does not work that way on another Linux system (CentOS), not even on console. So I am not sure if this is a real solution. Is this a configurable item on Linux Terminal to enable / disable this keyboard shortcut?
I just tried to install a game for Linux using some commands in the terminal and suddently all of the content of my desktop disappeared. I can't find any documents that was there using the search option.. Here are the command I used. the content was moved elsewhere and not deleted...!

how a ubuntu machine can ping another (I can see the ICMP request and response in wireshark) but in the terminal I get 100 % packet lost ? Same with the DNS requests ( I see the query to the DNS and the DNS is giving me the IP of the site) and internet connections at all. this machine is sharing it's internet connection and machines behind it have no problem with the internet. View 6 Replies View RelatedI was working on something important in 11.2 and did a "zypper up" in the terminal in the background. I wasn't paying that much attention to it, I believe it was an update to 11.3. After returning to the computer after about one hour the windows were behaving strangely and the machine wasn't very responsive. I decided to reboot. Now at login I have neither mouse nor keyboard. I have switched the keyboard to PS2 model, no difference. If someone could help me with booting to run level 3 from the grub menu perhaps I could change some settings there to make everything work. I really regret doing the update. It would be very important for me to be able to get back in to machine with spending as little time as possible on this. Could I reverse the update? This machine is very important for me and my family for their daily communication, but currently I have very little time to fix this. My quick fix was to install Kubuntu 10.10 so I could resume working, but I would really need to get back in to 11.2.

I have looked through most of the other threads about resolving the problem. when I see the answer about typing comands into the terminal I get lost and dont know what to do... I now have ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04 duel boot on laptop (hp nx6325). Cant seem to get it work on either virsion. I have tryed to chance passwords as other threads have sugested.

when I open a graphical terminal in the GUI, I appear as being the same user who ran X in order to enter the GUI, say user_foo, as said by whoami. But a program I usually use in a text console as user_foo, gets Command not found here. Furthermore, the name of the dir I am in does not appear in the prompt, whereas it does when in the text console.
I guess this has something to do with enheriting the environment, but don't know wht to do for this to happen. How do I open this GUI terminal? I do so by choosing among one of several ones in the DE main menu. When I click the menu entry, the terminal doesn't ask for a password.
when i used firefox there was a up and down arrow at the side of a web page so i could scroll slowly up or down,i am now using peppermint ice and the default browser is chromium which i like but there is no up or down arrow,does anyone know if there is an extension to put the arrows there?
View 2 Replies View RelatedUsually but not always, when I try to scroll down by clicking in the vertical scroll bar - instead of going down approx 1 screen firefox slowly and jerkily and out of control goes all the way to the bottom of the page. If it is a long page I wait a long time.
The wheel on the mouse works fine, moving the vertical scroll handle with the mouse works fine, pushing the down arrow also works fine.
Alternatively - sometimes the vertical scroll works as I expect it to.
Alterntively - when I use Opera it scrolls as I would expect.
I'm using Xterm. While running a prog/command if I scroll up and reading something on the screen, the xterm view resets to bottom if there is some output from the running command.
I tried enabling/disabling jump scroll, asynchronous scroll, scroll to bottom on tty output options of Xterm with no avail. In one way or the other way, the screen is scrolling or resetting to bottom if there is some output to screen.
I want to stop this behavior and the scroll should work as if it is in Konsole. The new output to screen should simply add at the bottom and the current viewing point should remain unscrolled. pls let me know if there is any working solution for this xterm problem.
