View 2 RepliesI use ceni to get online, and whilst ordinarily in other distros I need only configure the one time, and connection will establish itself at boot, here I have to set it up every time I enter the desktop.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed the base of Debian (only CD 1) without the desktop environment, so it is console only; also I am dual booting with Windows 7 x64 on this Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop... I have also successfully mounted my usb flash drive and CD drive; the one thing I am finding rather hectic is finding a way to connect to my wireless network with a "WPA2 Personal" Security and "TKIP/AES" Encryption with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card... I doubt that the drivers are actually installed, and Idk how to install them.Google searches on this yield confusing results, so I need help. So far, the most useful help I have found is the link posted here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo ... 29916.aspx but I have no idea on how to install that, if it is even what I need.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have switched two computers, my own and my mom's home computer, over to Linux Mint 7 XFCE CE, after trying out close to a dozen distros. Now my mom wants her work computer switched. But we need a program to replace the aforementioned Legalmath. That program will calculate interest on irregular payments (such as past due child support or spousal maintenance)and also calculates payments needed on a loan or past due bill in collection. It can also calculate future value of present payments and some other interesting things that my mom does not really do. If there are any other family law attorneys in the forum who have found a good program, please let me know. Or if anyone knows of a program that will do these functions well. This is basically the last hurdle before my mom and I both throw Windows completely out.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI wrote a bash script a few months ago and now I want to convert it to a C program. However, i used awk a lot in my script, and I don't know what to use in place of awk. The awk calls are simple, like string splitting and math, but I don't know of any replacement for the string splitting function. Are there any C libraries that include some sort of string splitting function?

Is there an open sourced alternative to this program that is free, or is there a simple way to make an open sourced alternative?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently run a home sever using windows server 2008. On it I'm using VMware to run 2 virtual machines (currently running CentOS (which is Red Hat based) as web and mail servers. It's not a big setup, we only host our personal websites and a couple for some friends. Although server 2008 handles resouces much better than server 2003, it's still running windows, which as we know is far more inferior to a Linux server. I'm trying to convince the husband to let me run everything on Debian, but he wants to run it on Red Hat (which okay, isn't bad but our household is devided. We have long running arguments because he likes his boxes Red Hat based running KDE, and I like my Debian distros running Gnome!)
The host server is running on a standard pc box, it's got a 2.5 gigahertz dual core processor and 3 gig of ram, almost one TB storage. (don't ask why I'm including this drastically important info!) I want to run the entire network on Debian. So that would be the main host running Debian and the two virtual machines also. The host itself would need to run as a file and app server for our home network and the two vertuals as web and mail servers. (we run about 12 domains three of which are under heavy usage with Mysql databases, so we run two servers so we can dedicate more rescources to the virtual server that sucks the most juice.) I was wondering how Debian handles virtualisation and what program(s) would be a good alternative to VMware?

I know that these forums aren't M$ support forums, but any mention of Linux and open source there just ends up in "don't use Linux"-type replies, so i figured i should ask it here. I have a quad-boot setup (Win7x64-Win7x64-K9.10x64-K9.10x64). I am in the process of migrating this setup to another (bigger) HDD. The Win7 system partitions were cloned using 3rd paty imaging software, Linux system partitions were cloned directly (cat /dev/sda5 > /dev/sdb5), data partitions were freshly created and populated with files copied from old partitions.
As the hard drive is bigger than previous one, i decided to add a little more space to Win7 system partitions. So when creating new partitions, i left 5GB unallocated space between them in order to grow the partitions later. I cloned the new partitions, ran the chkdsk with all options on to make sure the resulting partition survived the migration, then checked if it is readable under Linux (it was), used KPartitioner to grow the partition to the new size, again booted into Win7 Recovery, ran chkdsk with all options on, removed bootloader and made a new one using bcdboot.
Now, my Linuxes boot OK (there was some wankery involved but nothing too serious), but neither of my two Win7 can. I checked the bootloader, fiddled with different settings (e.g. removed setting the root by UUID), even tried to manually boot it from commandline - to no avail. After "chainloader +1" and "boot" it just does nothing. No error messages, nothing at all - the console screen doesn't even clear.
I like the convenience of having a music player that manages the placement of my music files based on the tags of the files, sorting into a root music folder with Artist/Album/01 - Track Title.mp3 sort of hierarchy. Previously, I was using Banshee for this feature, as even most of the other gui music players don't have this library management feature. Now, I've been trying to use console-based applications, and I have been using mpd + ncmpcpp fairly successfully. When I download new music, it is downloaded to a specific folder, and that's not part of my music collection. My previous workflow would be to open a gui filemanager at the downloaded folder, and drag and drop those songs onto banshee, which would then make a copy of those files in my library hierarchy. Currently, I'm doing the same thing, using Banshee only as a sort of import program, then closing it and updating my mpd database, and there we go.
If at all possible, I'd like to automate this to something where I can define a watch folder, and when some magical program sees new music in said watch folder, it identifies the correct place for the files to be copied into my heirarchy, renaming folders and files to the correct format. I know I've written a lot describing, but I don't actually think this too uncommon a task, and I'm wondering if anyone has a solution for my problem.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu server 10.04. I want to connect to my wireless router(192.168.123.254). My router normally has wpa but I turned off encryption until I can get the server working. my router has MAC flitering which it has my servers MAC address and the dhcp server on my router is configured to assigned an ip address of 192.168.123.123 to my server.
On the server I do see wlan0 when I do sudo ifconfig -a. HOw do I setup the rest? I 'm very new with command line and linux so please bear with me.
I just got a new desktop (the client) and hooked my "old" computer (the server) up to it with a crossover cable & NFS while I set up the new system.Unfortunately, while nfsd is running firefox cannot access the internet through ath0 -- the wifi card (NFS/rpc is on the ethernet card). Do I have to set up a proxy server (eg. squid) or is there a simpler solution?I don't need direct access to the net on the client. I just want to be able to use the wifi's IP in the server while it has a NFS client on eth0, so that firefox can work online.

I've set up the firewall rules and routing tables, so I vaguely know what I'm doing... but clearly not enough to debug this issue.
