I installed the base of Debian (only CD 1) without the desktop environment, so it is console only; also I am dual booting with Windows 7 x64 on this Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop... I have also successfully mounted my usb flash drive and CD drive; the one thing I am finding rather hectic is finding a way to connect to my wireless network with a "WPA2 Personal" Security and "TKIP/AES" Encryption with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card... I doubt that the drivers are actually installed, and Idk how to install them.Google searches on this yield confusing results, so I need help. So far, the most useful help I have found is the link posted here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo ... 29916.aspx but I have no idea on how to install that, if it is even what I need.
i tried following the readme file included in the driver of the usb network adapter but seems its not exact.
any ideas on how i can configure it manually? KDE does not detect any wifi device. .(of course since no driver is installed yet).
i used my desktop (win***)with DSL connection and installed the driver of the usb net adapter.. made it as the access point. . so my laptop detects the desktop as wifi spot.

To exploit the guessnet capability, I have configured my WIFI so that ifplugd can auto connect WIFI after boot. The access point is hidden, and I have provided all the required info in my /etc/network/interfaces file
I've been fighting with my atheros AR5007 network adapter to configure it on my qwest network and its not working! It hooks up to my friends comcast wifi!
My laptop has an internal wireless device and a button to turn it on/off, but since it has bad reception I use an external USB wireless adapter. The problem is that if I turn the internal wireless device off using the button, it also turns the USB wireless adapter off.Is there anyway to use the killswitch (the button) only for the internal wireless device? This only started to happen in Ubuntu 10.04.
I have 2 connections, wlan and wired, and I'd want to have a few websites (in my browser) to connect through the wireless connection while other go through the wired rj45 connection. s it possible? (without unplugging the rj45 cable...)
I have only had a few weeks worth of experience with linux, so I'm probably considered a newbie at this but I felt like giving it a shot. I just configured my new Toshiba Satellite A505-S6969 to jaunty. Most of the transition is going well but I'm stuck with a few issues, one of which is getting my wifi to work. Right now I'm working off of an ethernet cable.spci returns

I have an old PowerBook G4 that I would like to use as a 'dummy' computer for learning wireless penetration (WEP/WPA attacks) more effectively. I had been using a wireless router, but I gave it away I can use Mac OS X to share an ethernet connection over wifi, but this is _very_ un-configurable. You get two options only, WEP and a key-length. So, I would like to install someway to make this wireless connection more configurable.
I have a pc which has 2 network cards, 1 wifi and 1 ethernet card.
I'm using wifi card to connect to wifi network (internet) and i'm planing to share this wifi/internet connection via ethernet to wireless router (siemens sx763) so i can have internet on my other devices, e.g. mobile phone, laptop.
I plan on installing a belkin wifi router. Is there any software to configure it ? also i need to increase the security as max as possible will my wifi be secure? only certain number of devices to access it also any software to display the number of devices accessing it like a radar? i am very fed up of all the command-line thinggy
I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

I had to uninstall a proprietary ATI driver because it wrecked my X server. Apparently I removed the wrong package, because now the X server won't even start, even with the "nomodeset" flag.
QUESTION 1.How can I configure WiFi on the command line with NetworkManager or ifup, whichever is easier?
QUESTION 2.Which packages do I need to download to restore the X server?
In all previous versions of KDE I had Console8x16 set as KDE font for all cases (Settings->Appearance->Fonts). After tonight upgrade, this (only!) font is not working. I can see it in font manager, I can set it in ...Appearance->Fonts, but actually remains default font. Two of about 30 attempts somehow (can not reproduce) succeeded to set "console 12" font, but it disappeared after restart.
1. What can be the problem in 4.4? 2. In /usr/share/fonts tere are 3 files named console8x16.pcf, console8x8.pcf and console9x15.pcf, but in the font list in Appearance->Fonts I can see only 2 - one named "Console" (seems to be 8x16 and "console" (8x8). File 9x15 does not appear at all. Why?
Last results of attempts: cannot use console font in part of areas, while part works OK. For example: kdevelop editor, kmail message body text works OK. But kmail other parts - does not. The most interesting is that although setting the kmail body message text to console displays the message body text correctly (with console font), but the example message in "Configure kmail" dialogue "The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog" is displayed in the default font, as if there is no console font!
How can I start a program from tty1 console text mode to be executed in tty2 console text mode? Actualy I would like to start a program (chat client cli program) in tty8 automaticaly when linux PC boots.
I wanted to replace Gnome by KDE, I made a fatal fault: I deleted Gnome without installing KDE previously, thus i'm in console mode. Some friends proposed me this apt-get install kde command but that does not work because I have no internet connection, how to install my key 3G Orange by using the console?
After upgrading to F14 from F10, we seem to have access to the internet from our console, and no one is able to connect to server as well. We have static IP from comcast. And all the configurations on the eth0 looks fine. We are able to browse, if we set the server to dynamic ip. Also, we are able to connect another PC (laptop) with the static ip configuration, and browse fine. Read through many messages on this forum, cant get any clues,
I want to control Network manager from the command-line. This worked well enough in Ubuntu 10.04 (with cnetworkmanager, nmcli is another possible choice). Since the upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 however, a D-Bus exception is raised when I attempt to activate a connection from within a SSH terminal:
org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.PermissionDenied: Not authorized to control networking.
It may have to do with /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf; This issue occurs only when I am ssh'd into the machine; in a gnome session I don't get the same issue -- with the same (admin) user account in both cases.
