Ubuntu :: Thunderbird Preferred Application Setting Changed After Update
Nov 7, 2010
I have to go back to System->Preferences->Preferred Applications and reset Thunderbird as my preferred email program after most updates. It usually gets set to custom after an update, which does not work right with Firefox alt-F E to send link to email recipient. I sure would like to know how to make this setting stick.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 64but with Mozilla Thunderbird (Shredder v3.0.3pre) and Firefox 3.5.8.
I can't seem to get the Menu - File - Send Link to work nothing happens.
Also for Preferred Applications the only thing available for the Mail Reader is the choice custom. I removed Evolution earlier.
I suspect that if I populate the Mail Reader with the proper command line it should fix my problem.

Would like to know the best way (or the pros and cons of different ways) to set up Alsa. I did a search for information on how to setup alsa on my system. I found a lot of out-of-date information even on the alsa wiki. What I did finally locate was two different methods for setup, both seemed somewhat up-to-date. One method at the alsa wiki said to put part of the information in the modprobe directory in a conf file and set up certain aliases. Earlier suggestions for putting information in modprobe.conf or conf.modprobe appear to be outdated and a directory with separate files for each device and a conf extension to the files is currently used. The second method from a thread on the Debian forum said to use alsactl init, set sound levels the way you want and then use alsactl save and restore functionality. Older methods using alsaconf instead of alsactl init appear to be outdated as well. Not sure where to put the call to alsactl restore though. Didn't notice that in the documentation.In case it matters, I'm running Debian Stable and have a built-in sound card on the motherboard with AC97 compatibility. It's a Realtek ALC882.
Is there a preferred or better method for setting up alsa? Is there a good pointer to instructions that are not out-of-date somewhere? Would be very interested to hear how others set sound up on their machines. What do others recommend as best steps to do this?

Using thunderbird for email, as several users of this computer have individual preferences. Worked in 10.10 and previous. Upgraded to 11.04 this morning, had to install from CD due to my mistake. Changed computer name too. No worries, have done this before. Added new account to Thunderbird. Copied over mail folders too. Application is good to go. However, when checking email now get reply from server that password is invalid. Checked all account settings within T-Bird but cannot locate password setttings for this server/account. Appears to use something called STARTTLS. How to access this store of passwords?

I have Thunderbird installed and I really enjoy it as an application. I would like to set Thunderbird to start on boot. I tried to locate the binary for it in /usr/bin/ but was not able to. Has anyone done this before or does anyone know how I might go about locating the binary for it?

Suddenly the application launcher (the one that pops out when pressing the green chameleon button) has changed and I no longer get the formerly so pretty application launcher. Instead I now get a simple context menu style drop down menu.
I first noticed this after I updated PackageKit. is there a way to get this back to the previous applicationn launcher. When adding just the applet (without the button) it still looks the same, just the button doesn't pop it out anymore, as it chose to pop out a grey drop down instead.
This is on OpenSuse 11.4 KDE 4.5 and the latest desktop kernel

I have to set up a proxy for my work's network. No computer except the proxy has a direct internet connection. The proxy will NOT be transparent so it authenticates with Active Directory and allows or denies pages. The squid proxy is up, and working accordingly, denying and allowing what's needed to who's needed. BUT! Thunderbird and Outlook didn't work, so in less than 10 minutes I was forced to fall back.
I read googling a lot, and searching a bit here about socks, which seems to be what I need but also that squid is already a socks proxy. Web pages were the concern, it's not needed that other stuff is authenticated, it might as well be transparent for Outlook, Thunderbird and other programs *for example, it's not needed to block a Warcraft III game, though, allowing it explicitly is not the point either* but as of now, none can connect *haven't actually tried Warcraft though, but stuff like Adobe's updater didn't work either and I recall someone mentioned Windows Live messenger didn't either* The Squid Proxy is a CentOS.

I'm running Dovecot version dovecot-1.0.7 on CentOS 5.4. I'm trying to create subfolders and I can't. I've tried Mac's mail application and Thunderbird; they both come up with an error, basically saying that the server doesn't support level one folders(subfolders). Squirrelmail can't create subfolders neither. I did some reading and thought that perhaps the problem lies in the /etc/dovecot.conf file; specifically with the "mail_location" directive. I currently don't have that directive active which means Dovecot uses defaults settings: saving users' mail in the %u/mail folder. Is there any way to configure Dovecot to use subfolders?

I've executed the Update Manager, which ran an updating process that took long( ten minutes to half an hour, I think). Then, I was asked to restart the computer and I shut it down.2-3 hours later, I turned on the PC and here's how my desktop looks like since then(see attached screenhot).I guess that's the theme in releases 9.10 and lower. However, notice the window borders and title bars are just the same as before.Is this normal? If not, what could be the cause and what could I do about it?

The latest Firefox update seemed to override my Slickness Black theme settings for the location bar drop down (where you drop down the bar to see past sites visited. The link under the site name used to be a nice grey and now it's standard weblink blue. Not critical of course but I do personally find this annoying. I tried changing the weblink colors in Firefox but that didn't help. Anyhow have any idea how to get my original color back? It's unreadable in that awful blue.

When I set up an ID in Ubuntu, I encrypted it. I did a print screen of the passphrase and put it on the desktop. I'm just learning how to use the encryption so don't fault me for putting it right on the desktop. There is no important data in this ID. Now, I went and changed my password to the account. On the next boot, I got a few error message:
Could not update ICEauthority file /home/mickymouse/.ICEauthority
There is a problem with the configuration server /usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256 In researching these, it looks like the problem is that I changed the password but didn't update (or something) my passphrase.
I can't boot into the GUI but I have figured out how to boot to a command prompt. I don't have access to my home directory because I don't have my passphrase. Am I toast or is there a way to recover / update the passphrase?

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 and notice that the Close, Park, and Fullscreen Triad on each displayed window is located at the upper left corner. I am accustomed to seeing it on the upper right. Is this something fixed in the new version or is it something that can be changed? This is not a big deal but will take some getting used to.

I have downloaded the newest version to my hard disk and am wondering if I can just update it from that file? I don't want to try installing it for fear of loosing everything I already have.

I use the on-board sound chip of a Gigabyte motherboard (Realtek)and I have connected it with optical cable to an amplifier.
Everything worked fine, until February, when an update changed the kernel and the PC stopped giving sound signal! When I returned to the previous kernel (at grub), again everything worked. So,it doesn't seem to be a connection or drivers problem.
I supposed that with 11.04 edition this problem would be solved. But it isn't. In fact I have serious problem now because the old kernel isn't listed in grub anymore.

I'm running F12 and Package Updater has been telling me to update Thunderbird for two days but fails on every attempt. I tried to go the yum route today with
yum remove thunderbird
yum install thunderbird
And I get this error:
Error: Package: thunderbird-3.0.10-1.fc12.i686 (updates)
Requires: nss >= 3.12.8
Installed: nss-3.12.7-6.fc12.i686 (@updates)
nss = 3.12.7-6.fc12
Available: nss-3.12.4-14.fc12.i686 (fedora)
nss = 3.12.4-14.fc12
Is there any way I can update nss such that Thunderbird will have access to the correct version or is this something that is in process for the repository?

So I installed the latest Thunderbird security update without bothering to check what version it was and found that I had "up"graded from 2 to 3. Despite selecting 'no synchronization' on all my archived Gmail labels it still started downloading many gigabytes of archived email. In Thunderbird 2 I had just the headers of the archive and that suited me fine. So a warning about installing the latest updates without checking and a question: Is there a Thunderbird 2 package for slackware 13.1?

Some time ago I did an automatic update and after that firefox, thunderbird and yast2 don't start. It's not that there is an error message or sth. Their icons just start jumping and after a while it stops without anything opened. I tried even removing the zilla directories and so on but it doesn't help. Of course I tried to simply reboot the machine and strangely enough, still does not work. Opera works though and I am ok with that, however yast2 not opening is more annoying. I do all the stuff that I want from the console, but of course that's not the point
