The quality of my display has changed overnight from ok to amazingly good. I assume something has been upgraded in the latest update. Is there a way of listing the latest changes? I just want to know what has brought about this amazing transformation.
View 4 RepliesThe latest Firefox update seemed to override my Slickness Black theme settings for the location bar drop down (where you drop down the bar to see past sites visited. The link under the site name used to be a nice grey and now it's standard weblink blue. Not critical of course but I do personally find this annoying. I tried changing the weblink colors in Firefox but that didn't help. Anyhow have any idea how to get my original color back? It's unreadable in that awful blue.

Is there a way to upgrade cups to support the latest printers? For example if I am using 8.04 LTS server and I buy a newish printer, it won't work. Am I able to add a repository or apt-get upgrade to get the latest version?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have duel boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 910. I've just downloaded and installed the latest update for Ubuntu 9.10. After my latest update, Windows will no longer start. When I select Windows from the grub loader, the screen goes black with a blinking white horizontal cursor at the top left of the screen. I have read that it may of something to do with "update from Karmic to Lucid", what ever that is.

The WEP, WPA-PSK connections and communications between my board with linux and my desktop PC, Windows XP SP2 (with Olitec USB wireless) are fine. But when I configured the WPA type, the connection seems established but shows the status "TKIP - Key Absent" in the security dialog box. Anyone faced this problem? Am attaching the conf files and the connection status. In the AP side am complaining . I am using the in built radius server conf with the hostapd 0.4.7

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed the latest update for Ubuntu 10.04, however upon requested restart i now boot to a black screen. the boot sequence is system post, followed by the generic Purple UBUNTU loading screen, following that you just get a black screen.

There's some bug or other error in the updates I've just installed. I run Update Manager very frequently (almost daily). The last time I ran it was 2 days ago, so this bug can only have been released into updates today or yesterday. I ran it this evening and there were quite a lot of new updates (around 50mb in total), and I installed them all without really checking to see what they were - but as I'm new to Linux I don't exactly have any weird or rare software running on my laptop, so they only would have been for Ubuntu itself or some very common programs.
After installing it required a reboot. Upon booting up again, the volume icon has turned to 'Mute All' and I am unable to turn my laptop off. Telling it to shut down simply causes the screen to go black for a couple of seconds and then return to the login screen. I also notice that the Suspend/Hibernate options have disappeared, and I now only have the option to Log Out, Restart or Shut Down. {As I'm new to Linux I have no idea how best to proceed, or even how to officially 'report' this if indeed it is a bug contained in one of the updates.}
After the latest update of testing, Debian started to reboot at at startup, after just few messages shown (that's all after GRUB choice is made). If I pick up older kernel it boots OK. What should I look for to determine the cause? (I.e. what log etc.).

I allready changed the settings from regular to LTS, but nothing changes. There are updates to the kernel, but I cannot download them, so I'm kinda stuck here.

Usually when i boot into my desktop wireless automatically can connect to my router but not this time, wired only for now... i know theres tons of wireless issue threads but some more experienced users will be able to get straight to the point and run through some diagnostics with me.

Then, I was asked to restart the computer and I shut it down.2-3 hours later, I turned on the PC and here's how my desktop looks like since then(see attached screenhot).I guess that's the theme in releases 9.10 and lower. However, notice the window borders and title bars are just the same as before.Is this normal? If not, what could be the cause and what could I do about it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.10. Normally when I boot, I get the choice to run Ubuntu or the Windows loader, where I choose between 7 or XP. I have just noticed that when I boot now, I do not have the choice of going into windows. This has happened on two of my PC's just in the last few days. I assume one of the updates has overwritten the grub configuration file as I still get the grub menu but not the windows option. I have tried sudo update-grub but this did not solve the problem.
View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday did a fresh install of UNR 10.10, all went well with that. After the first log in it found the Wifi and checked for updates. Updated the system and then it went to restart the system due to a Kernel upgrade. Once I did this, that is when the issues started. Firstly when booting up, it just sat at the Ubuntu boot up screen saying:
"The disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present"
'Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery'
So firstly I hit S, this presented me with several error boxes (as expected due to setup/config files sitting in my /home folder), I then found that I wasn't able to connect to my wifi (not that it can't see it, just that it won't connect) each time I try and connect it just comes up saying that the wifi is disconnected. Of all the things to fail I was expecting the Bluetooth to and it didn't. Anyway the computer specs are: MSI Wind U100, upgraded to 2 Gig Ram, 320Gig HDD, and wifi card is the Realtek RTL8187SE.
HDD is setup as:
4Gig for Swap (/dev/sdb1)
6Gig for / (/dev/sdb5)
Remainder is /home (/dev/sdb6) (I did make this an encrypted partition)
Can't do any screen shots as I am not able to connect to the internet on that machine (having to use another computer in the house). I have tried to view the fstab file and I am not able to.
I juset reinstalled my ubuntu and i can't update to the latest kernel. I'm stuck at 2.6.31-15. Also my grub is v1.94 Beta4 and can't upgrade it to grub2.

I have to go back to System->Preferences->Preferred Applications and reset Thunderbird as my preferred email program after most updates. It usually gets set to custom after an update, which does not work right with Firefox alt-F E to send link to email recipient. I sure would like to know how to make this setting stick.

When I set up an ID in Ubuntu, I encrypted it. I did a print screen of the passphrase and put it on the desktop. I'm just learning how to use the encryption so don't fault me for putting it right on the desktop. There is no important data in this ID. Now, I went and changed my password to the account. On the next boot, I got a few error message:
Could not update ICEauthority file /home/mickymouse/.ICEauthority
There is a problem with the configuration server /usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256 In researching these, it looks like the problem is that I changed the password but didn't update (or something) my passphrase.
I can't boot into the GUI but I have figured out how to boot to a command prompt. I don't have access to my home directory because I don't have my passphrase. Am I toast or is there a way to recover / update the passphrase?
