Ubuntu Multimedia :: Update Changed The Kernel And The PC Stopped Giving Sound Signal?

Apr 29, 2011

I use the on-board sound chip of a Gigabyte motherboard (Realtek)and I have connected it with optical cable to an amplifier.

Everything worked fine, until February, when an update changed the kernel and the PC stopped giving sound signal! When I returned to the previous kernel (at grub), again everything worked. So,it doesn't seem to be a connection or drivers problem.

I supposed that with 11.04 edition this problem would be solved. But it isn't. In fact I have serious problem now because the old kernel isn't listed in grub anymore.

Ubuntu :: Update For A New Kernel, But Kernel Version Hasn't Changed

Jan 7, 2010

At the moment I am using kernel 2.6.31-14-generic. I'm not one of those people who needs to have the latest and greatest kernel to be happy, I just rely on the update manager. I swore that I saw an update for a new kernel, but my kernel version hasn't changed. I'm just curious if there was a new kernel that was released or if that was just an update to the kernel listed above.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound Since Recent Kernel Update?

Aug 20, 2010

Today, I installed the recent kernel security update (i.e. 2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP). After a reboot, the sound is gone.

From my user account:
mpc@awd:~$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

Same problem with "aumix".

However, the commands "sudo alsamixer" and "sudo aumix" seem to work (but still no sound).

"lsmod | grep snd" will give
snd_hda_codec_atihdmi 2367 1
snd_hda_codec_realtek 203310 1
snd_hda_intel 21941 0

Well, the gdm issue was pretty easy to solve. Just reinstalled NVIDIA video drivers in runlevel 3.

But sound seems to be a litle more dificult. Before I spend some hours, I would like to ask if some had the same problem.

By the way, here is my alsa-info.sh url.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Snd_sbawe ISA Sound Card Not Giving Sound

Feb 9, 2010

I encountered this on a 10.3 system but there might be similar problem with the 11 series. Having gone through the business of obtaining config info on this card via pnpdump and subsequently using Yast to configure and install it, I encountered a situation whereby the card was fully functional as far as the "Test Sound" option of Yast was concerned. However, after a reboot, it was not loaded and no sound was possible. Debugging the "alsasound" script, I discovered that the directory /proc/asound was not in place at that time and, therefore, sound was not started.

The solution was to add the module name (snd_sbawe) to /etc/sysconfig/kernel to the parameter "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT". Seems like Yast did not see a reason to do this itself.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Heavy Sound Lags After Kernel Update?

Jul 17, 2011

After I upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-31 to 2.6.32-32 and then 2.6.32-33, my sound started to lag(the lag occurred on 2.6.32-32 and stayed to 2.6.32-33, but it worked perfectly ever before). Sound does work in itself, but frequently lags and pieces that were already played before will be played again, pretty much like an old vinyl that occasionally jumps or hangs. When I start to replay something, it does not put out anything for a second or two and then starts, when I stop it will keep playing for the exact same amount of time. So, sound is synced to videos(video replay works perfectly well and without the lag). Problem is definitely related to the sound drivers, not to replay software or any buggy file. It occurs with DVDs, Flash Videos in Firefox, music in gmusicbrowser, movie files with VLC, whatever you want. I never experienced such problems with any kernel before. Although I've seen many others posting similar problems, I cannot see any valid solution for myself.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and I sure don't want to go to 10.10 for the second.

I reinstalled Alsa and Pulse, no joy. My sound card is recognized correctly by alsa and can be found in aplay -l. It's a generic onboard surround sound device, although I only use stereo channels.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Stopped Working In 11.04?

May 2, 2011

in 10.10 my internal audio and my external usb 5.1 soundcard worked fine, and everything was still ok after i upgraded to 11.04. i then tried to install an equaliser called "alsaequal" which required the alsa-driver-1.0.24 package, which i compiled ok. now i've lost all sound and can only see dummy output listed in sound preferences, and no hardware is detected.

sudo aplay -l doesn't detect anything either! i've folled all the steps on the sticky thread in multimedia, i tried purging and reinstalling all the alsa packages which didnt work, and then tried compilling alsa source packages, which wound up with errors. i was following this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1725874 which suggested running the alsa-info.sh script. i ran this and uploaded the output here:961380d1e9d23fi dont really understand any of this, but it seems to have detected my internal pci card but not my usb card.any help would be really appreciated after the hours spend fruitlessly trawling through these forums

Jan 19, 2010

I just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.10 and now my sound doesn't work (note: I don't know if sound was working on 9.4, since I only ran that long enough to upgrade again) Sound was working just fine under 8.10, and I just tried booting up with a livecd I had handy, which is 8.04.1 and sound worked right off the bat, no problems.I've checked the volumes on everything, including the master volume which WAS initially set to 0.Sadly, turning that up did nothing. The Pulseaudio Volume Control app seems to think nothing's wrong- it's picking up the sound from various applications just fine, the volumes are all on, etc. (aplay lists my soundcard fine:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Card Stopped Working?

When I first installed Ubuntu, my sound card was working properly after I made the necessary changes (system>preferences>sound), but after a few days it just stopped working and the sound from the motherboard is only working.

I reinstalled Ubuntu to my computer a few days ago, and my sound card was working again, but once again, it stopped working after a few days. How can I fix this?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Suddenly Just Stopped Working ?

Jan 5, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu and my sound was working fine and then suddenly it just stopped working.

It does however, have odd spells where its working (for like 2 minutes) but those spells are few and far between. So basically the sound is not working.

When it isn't working my speaker seem to be making these hissing/screeching noises.

I've tried looking up on Google on how to fix it, i.e. running terminals, etc. but still haven't come round to fixing it. Could someone explain to me how to fix the sound please?

And no, the speakers aren't on mute. I checked volume control and everything is full.

Summary:
Laptop: Acer
OS: Ubuntu 9.something
Sound card: hda-intel
Problem: Sound not working

I ran apt-get update and upgraded following this to be sure while doing this troubleshooting.

I went ahead and ran the also information script and the output is here: [URL]

The speaker lights are on so there is power getting there. I re-set the sound preferences to use the usb as output device and cranked the volume up all the way. This preference does not seem to stay between reboots or even when checking while troubleshooting this problem.
