I'm trying to set up my Thunderbird 3.1.8 (running on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) to play a .wav file of my choice when new mail arrives. The file I've chosen is 8,8 KB in size and lasts 3 seconds. I've selected the "Play a sound" + "Use the following sound file" options in my Preferences, but only the first second (if that) of the sound gets played - both when I click the "Play" button in the Preferences menu to test it, as well as when receiving mail. Restarting the program with my new settings doesn't help.
Actual question(s):
- Is there a limit on the size/duration of the sound one can use for such a signal in this program?
- Is there any way to modify this limit?

I'm running Dovecot version dovecot-1.0.7 on CentOS 5.4. I'm trying to create subfolders and I can't. I've tried Mac's mail application and Thunderbird; they both come up with an error, basically saying that the server doesn't support level one folders(subfolders). Squirrelmail can't create subfolders neither. I did some reading and thought that perhaps the problem lies in the /etc/dovecot.conf file; specifically with the "mail_location" directive. I currently don't have that directive active which means Dovecot uses defaults settings: saving users' mail in the %u/mail folder. Is there any way to configure Dovecot to use subfolders?

Recently did a fresh install of F12, previously used F11 without any problems. Now Evolution move ALL received messages to trash automatically. I have had to make rules to move each e-mail to the inbox but still all incoming messages go straight to Trash.

I have Thunderbird installed and I really enjoy it as an application. I would like to set Thunderbird to start on boot. I tried to locate the binary for it in /usr/bin/ but was not able to. Has anyone done this before or does anyone know how I might go about locating the binary for it?

I have set up postfix and dovecot as per the Ubuntu anual and appear to have a functioning mail server.Using the sendmail command I can send mail and I receive mail in ~/Maildir. Using Thunderbird I can read any mails received but I can't send any mail from Thunderbird. I have tried with both STARTTLS and SSL/TLS and whilst I get the prompt for a password I keep getting the message my password for my server is wrong.I have ports 25, 465, 587 and 993. Is that all the right ports? When I ping my domain name it resolves to my router name whereas I believe it should resolve to my IP. Could there be a problem with my host file? I've had a play but to no avail. Here's the error in mail.log.
Code:
westwood@westwood-desktop:/etc$ tailf /var/log/mail.log
Jun 1 19:00:33 westwood-desktop postfix/smtpd[2376]: warning: localhost.localdomain[127.0.0.1]: SASL LOGIN

I am setting up a server that is to serve websites and host mail.I have run into a problem regarding the mail server. The server is completely set up but for some reason it is not receiving the e-mails I am trying to send to it. When i mail to the associated mail address from internal by the "mail" command it works fine. But when I try from an external mail server, the mail never gets through. And I do not receive a bounce e-mail.
It says that the port 25 IS open for TCP connections (in iptables - I opened it myself). And surely when I telnet to it on that port from inside the server, I get an connection. But when I telnet from an external network I get a refused connection. It would sound that the port is in fact not really open for external use, in my mind, but it is. Is there possibly anything else I might have neglected to check in this mystery

I'm using postfix on Ubuntu 9.10 and all I need is to occasionally send automated emails from perl or php scripts when data processing errors occur. In other words, I want to reject any connection attempts from remote clients and otherwise allow nothing except outgoing emails from one particular account.f I add this line to the default main.cf, will it do the trick or is it more complicated?
Code:
smtpd_sender_restrictions reject

I installed a new server running CentOS 5.2. I have iptables and SELinux off. The new server will not accept incoming mail. It will send out fine. Our mail server redirects mail for it.help to it.[url]...- [url]....is this server. Any messages sent to this address get stuck in a deferred queue. The error message on each one (from the mail server admin console) is "connection to[url]... [10.9.10.202] - connection refused". I can ping [url].... from the mail server.
This seems like a firewall issue, but it is off. Is there some configuration file I need to change to allow incoming mail? Or is there some test I can run on the new server to further troubleshoot what is going on

assist me in using the iptables firewall to block all incoming mail traffic (SMTP port 25) except that of a certain IP(s)? the situation is that we have a server that we only want to receive mail from a particular sender.

Request your help in writing a shell script for the following requirement:
1) scan each incoming mail with conditions on sender name and subject
2) scan the mail body for set of characters and email them.
general usage is as follows: I get a mail as follows from: [URL]... subject : Urgent, reply body : name : xyz contact : 12345 the script should mail the following as subject line: n:xyz c:12345 I know procmail is a good option for this, but I'm compelled to use shell script

I've read many post close to my subject regarding blacklisting incoming emails, but non of them described what I really want:How can I reject a continuously changing email from my postfix, here is what I mean:
abduooo+bncCIr7stnbBBCssufsBBoEzTHSKg@googlegroups.com
abduooo+bncCMfZgc-iExCKr-fsBBoEMzorbA@googlegroups.com
abduooo+bncCLf5kv6MHRCtmefsBBoEjYnAAQ@googlegroups.com
I think you got what I mean, the thing I've taken from the posts I've read is that I created a sender_access file hashed it and added the:smtpd_recipient_restrictions = check_sender_access hash:/etc/postfix/sender_accessto postfix main.cf configurationThe sender access file reads:abduooo*@googlegroups.com REJECTBut that didn't work, I know that there is some magical slashes and dots to be added to the sender_access, but I don't know which.

I have been trying to solve this problem for two days now looking at various forums and websites but can't really figure out what's going on here.I have setup postfix on my ubuntu and I can send emails using "telnet localhost 25" and the ehlo thingy. Apache can also send emails. My problem is with incoming emails. When I try to send an email (through Gmail) I get the following error message:
Code:

I have a server with a domain running and im trying to resolve the mail server but i can't see where to start. I use OpenSuse 11.2. Basically, for starting, i want postfix to send incoming emails to a php script or perl. for outgoing emails i guess that i could use php mail function and i will see what else to have. I configured the dns. I do a dig.mydomain.tld MX and i get the following:
mydomain.tld3600INMX0 mail.mydomain.tld
mail.mydomain.tld 3600INAmyNumericalIp
So now my system is receiving MX content but i dont know what to do.

- Firefox 3.6.8 (64 bit)
- Get Mail extension (v3.3.4),
- Thunderbird (3.1.1)
Problem:
Clicking "Read Mail" does nothing, whereas clicking "Compose Message" opens Thunderbird as expected. Thunderbird is properly configured under "System Settings > Default Apps > Email Client".
Whereas, switching the default email client back to Kmail results in the Get Mail "read mail" and "compose message" functions properly opening Kmail in both instances.
This problem occurred for me before (when using openSUSE v11.1 and earlier versions of the apps), but I don't recall how I eventually solved it, or whether it was resolved via an update of one of the above apps/extensions. Nonetheless, I'm now confronted by the very same problem again.

is there a way you can set up mail, so that it functions as thunderbird? for example, in thunderbird, you could create a hotmail email account, and add a new account to thunderbird with your hotmail username, password and if i recall well, smtp and server port. if that is not possible, what do i have to do be able to send emails from console in general? i ve seen some guides online which i think they are deprecated or something, cause the steps they suggest dont actually correspond to what you really have to do. what would be the simplest way to send email from console?

I store all my personal files inclduing mail folders on my external usb drive which allows me to experiment with different distros freely. On each new install i point the mail settings to my mozilla folder. But Slackware 13 is throwing a lot of challenges my way. I am currently finding that I cannot copy recently arrived mail into my designated folders. The message says something about I am running out of disk space when in fact I have plenty of space.
I initially thought it might have something to do with file permissions. But definitely not in this case. The folder is owned by myself and has full permissions chmod 775.I am currently using windows which gives access to all my mail folders.

I am trying to install Mozilla Thunderbird email client. When I configure this program, it defaults to IMAP4-type incoming mail server (Port 143) instead of POP3 (Port 110) which my ISP uses. I did not see POP3 anywhere in the available dialog boxes. Is there any way to get Thunderbird to use POP3 in opensuse 11.2 Gnome Edition?

I have 5 mailboxes provided by my ISP, which I have been using since 2005 with IMAP.1 month ago my Thunderbird client under both 9.04 (desktop) and 9.10 (laptop) started refusing to delete any incoming mail in one of my mailboxes (but not in the other 4).
Error message: "(...) Mail server responded: System I/O Error" 1 week ago, same problem for another mailbox (but not for the other 3), again affecting both machines. Evolution does delete incoming mail on these 2 mailboxes, no issues at all. Have googled, found only one solution (imap folder corrupt), but nothing makes sense.

Ok, so I've done a clean install of 10.04 over 9.1 and despite a couple of issues am very impressed. The thing that's currently bugging me most is that I can't set the chat/mail/broadcast panel menu thing to use thunderbird for mail. Is there any way to do this, or do I need to have thunderbird as a separate icon?
