Ubuntu :: Adding Thunderbird Preferred Application?
Feb 22, 2010
I have Ubuntu 9.10 64but with Mozilla Thunderbird (Shredder v3.0.3pre) and Firefox 3.5.8.
I can't seem to get the Menu - File - Send Link to work nothing happens.
Also for Preferred Applications the only thing available for the Mail Reader is the choice custom. I removed Evolution earlier.
I suspect that if I populate the Mail Reader with the proper command line it should fix my problem.

I have to go back to System->Preferences->Preferred Applications and reset Thunderbird as my preferred email program after most updates. It usually gets set to custom after an update, which does not work right with Firefox alt-F E to send link to email recipient. I sure would like to know how to make this setting stick.

I have Thunderbird installed and I really enjoy it as an application. I would like to set Thunderbird to start on boot. I tried to locate the binary for it in /usr/bin/ but was not able to. Has anyone done this before or does anyone know how I might go about locating the binary for it?

I was wondering if there was any way that I could add a launcher for an application that has to be launched from a specific directory. Not particularly a Desktop launcher, but perhaps under the Applications/Games tab in Gnome at the top. I want to be able to drag that launcher down to my AWN dock.

I like Unity, and I appreciate Canonical's work in making the desktop cleaner-looking and more intuitive.I think that being able to customize the top/application(?) panel would be very powerful. By this, I mean both adding and removing indicators.I guess the developers are aware of this, and it's easier said than done. I don't know.Personally, I miss the weather and CPU temperature applets of the old Gnome layout.I tried to apply the best guide I've found to modifying the top panel, to no avail.
After I followed the instructions for the addition of three different indicators (weather, cpu frequency and CPU and RAM % usage), my top panel remained the same.I don't know whether the indicators should show up right away or only upon restart. I did restart, though. For both the weather and CPU frequency indicators, the terminal said:Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/fr.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_sour ce_Sources Hash Sum mismatchI don't know how to get around this

I'm running Dovecot version dovecot-1.0.7 on CentOS 5.4. I'm trying to create subfolders and I can't. I've tried Mac's mail application and Thunderbird; they both come up with an error, basically saying that the server doesn't support level one folders(subfolders). Squirrelmail can't create subfolders neither. I did some reading and thought that perhaps the problem lies in the /etc/dovecot.conf file; specifically with the "mail_location" directive. I currently don't have that directive active which means Dovecot uses defaults settings: saving users' mail in the %u/mail folder. Is there any way to configure Dovecot to use subfolders?

I would like to know which programs you would recommend for doing this easily and quickly. At the moment I would really like something I could add photos to set timing and transition effects and add a sound track to each invidual image.

My "dolphinsu" application is buggy. It won't allow superuser opening of files for editing in superuser kwrite.
But if I make a "link to application" on my desktop with this as the application command:
Code:
Then I get a superuser file manager that does allow me to open files for sditing with superuser kwrite.
I'd like to add the link (to "kdesu konqueror /") onto my KDE Panel so I don't have to hunt down the icon on the KDE Desktop to open it.
How do I add a custom link like this into the icons on the KDE panel?

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

The Preferred Applications applet doesn't do what I need it to do.
What I'm looking for is a Win 3.x style File Association applet or config file so I can have .mp3's handled by Audacious and .m3u's handled by VLC, and so on. I'm sure it's out there somewhere, but I can't find it.

I installed Adobe Reader from the repository, but didn't like it (it takes way to long to load a page evince does instantly).I've removed it with the package manager, purged it with apt-get, completely removed it with synaptic, and set the right click to always use evince; the thing is still the preferred program and double-clicking on a pdf still tries to use Adobe and fails every time. This is really annoying in that Chrome tries to use Adobe to open pdf files too, so now I have to open my download folder, right-click, click "open with", and click "document viewer" (all for something that used to take one click!)

I want to use Sans for English and another font for Chinese. I was thinking maybe I can modify
/etc/fonts/conf.d/69-language-selector-zh-cn.conf
/etc/fonts/conf.d/99-language-selector-zh.conf
to change the order of preferred font. But I couldn't find the files and I not sure if that will achieve my purpose at all...

Using Preferences->Preferred Applications, in the multimedia tab, I've selected 'custom' and set the command to "guayadeque". But, if I double click on a .mp3, movieplayer pops up, and if I use a Media Control Applet in AWN, rythmbox shows up as the default. Anyway to make guayadeque (or other) as the true system default for music files?

I have a disk that is formatted as NTFS (from Windows 7 - dual boot with Ubuntu Studio). This is not a boot disk, just an extra disk for data. I would like it to be available to both OS's. In Ubuntu, I went to System -> Administration -> Disk Utility and saw the disk. I clicked on the volume name and clicked Mount. I would like this always mounted when I restart Ubuntu. It was mounted as /media/Data2 (/dev/sdc5).What is the best/preferred way to format the entry in /etc/fstab?

After a PSU and motherboard failure, I'm about to spec out a new PC. The last time I looked, Nvidia was the preferred graphics chipset as they tended to support Linux better than ATI. Is this still the case?[url].... seem to have lots of ATI cards in stock but hardly any Nvidia (despite offering a similar sized range), but I don't want to get an ATI card if it's not preferred for technological reasons (or even FOSS ethical reasons!).

First is this:Whenever I open a file through - say - Open Office, the list of files I get shown automatically also show all the hidden files. Right click -> uncheck hidden files does the trick only for one session. If I hit Open again, they're shown again. How can I set it to not show hidden files by default in the 'open file' dialogue (for all apps)?Second is this:Under preferences, there's an item called 'preferred applications'. This is great, and works ok, but is way too general for me. How can I set that files with certain extensions always open with one app, and files with another extension always open with another app.
