I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 and notice that the Close, Park, and Fullscreen Triad on each displayed window is located at the upper left corner. I am accustomed to seeing it on the upper right. Is this something fixed in the new version or is it something that can be changed? This is not a big deal but will take some getting used to.

Then, I was asked to restart the computer and I shut it down.2-3 hours later, I turned on the PC and here's how my desktop looks like since then(see attached screenhot).I guess that's the theme in releases 9.10 and lower. However, notice the window borders and title bars are just the same as before.Is this normal? If not, what could be the cause and what could I do about it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedThe latest Firefox update seemed to override my Slickness Black theme settings for the location bar drop down (where you drop down the bar to see past sites visited. The link under the site name used to be a nice grey and now it's standard weblink blue. Not critical of course but I do personally find this annoying. I tried changing the weblink colors in Firefox but that didn't help. Anyhow have any idea how to get my original color back? It's unreadable in that awful blue.

It usually gets set to custom after an update, which does not work right with Firefox alt-F E to send link to email recipient. I sure would like to know how to make this setting stick.

When I set up an ID in Ubuntu, I encrypted it. I did a print screen of the passphrase and put it on the desktop. I'm just learning how to use the encryption so don't fault me for putting it right on the desktop. There is no important data in this ID. Now, I went and changed my password to the account. On the next boot, I got a few error message:
Could not update ICEauthority file /home/mickymouse/.ICEauthority
There is a problem with the configuration server /usr/lib/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256 In researching these, it looks like the problem is that I changed the password but didn't update (or something) my passphrase.
I can't boot into the GUI but I have figured out how to boot to a command prompt. I don't have access to my home directory because I don't have my passphrase. Am I toast or is there a way to recover / update the passphrase?
I had the desktop version of ubuntu installed on my netbook previously. Then I got the 11.04 update which changed my desktop to what I think is the netbook version of ubuntu, which I highly dislike. Is there any way to change it back?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI use the on-board sound chip of a Gigabyte motherboard (Realtek)and I have connected it with optical cable to an amplifier.
Everything worked fine, until February, when an update changed the kernel and the PC stopped giving sound signal! When I returned to the previous kernel (at grub), again everything worked. So,it doesn't seem to be a connection or drivers problem.
I supposed that with 11.04 edition this problem would be solved. But it isn't. In fact I have serious problem now because the old kernel isn't listed in grub anymore.
Firefox auto update keeps failing so...I need help locating the original installation location.
I tried downloading the update and using archive manager to open rather than save, but still it wanted to save. Now I can't find the location it selected.
I want to locate the downloaded saved and delete the new files, to conserve space.
And I need to learn how to force an Automatic update.
I found a folder named firefox and another firefox 3.0 System will not let me delete / move to trash.
I want to update to latest version. Don't want to remove the original and lose all my bookmarks

I'm in a bind and I don't know how to get what I want. Nmap shows ipp running cups on port 631. Great, simple enough I uninstall cups, along with its dependencies. A new portscan reveals that the port is closed SUCCESS, but... Ubuntu Update Manager nags me @ every restart about the "important security" updates. I can't lock the version of cups in Synaptic, because cups is not installed! So you see I'm in a bind. If I have cups installed I have an open port, and if I uninstall cups the update manager nags me. What do I do? I've tried:
- stopping the cups service and issuing the chkconfig cups off command... (doesn't close the port)
- uninstalling cups... (update manager nags)
- fuser -k 631/tcp (great, but @ reboot the port is still open)
Please teach me how to close this port / stop this service / tell update manager to shove cups.....
I'm working with a program that uses Open Motif to create all of the widgets, including the Open File dialog box (obviously). However, Open Motif being kinda old-timey, 80's vintage, and for the most part now an abandoned project, it is quite clunky. So, actually what I need to do is to open some files located on my work server. I have already successfully connected to the relevant server directories with Samba, and with programs built with GTK+ (such as GIMP) I can open files across the network because I have created a bookmark in Nautilus, and those bookmarks appear in the Open File dialog box created by GTK+. Now, Open Motif is different: it doesn't see network locations, orNautilus shortcuts. When I type "smb://serveripyadayada" in the search folder, it really doesn't like it and complains. So, what do I do? Can I get somehow Open Motif to open a network location? Or can I do a run-around and place a shortcut in the file system that points to the network location?

Anyway I am missing the possibility of writing manually the folder you want to go on nautilus using the Location bar. It was used to have some kind of icon which you can click and it switched between graphich breadcrumbs or the location of the folder and you could changed it manually, you know what I mean?

I'm not one of those people who needs to have the latest and greatest kernel to be happy, I just rely on the update manager. I swore that I saw an update for a new kernel, but my kernel version hasn't changed. I'm just curious if there was a new kernel that was released or if that was just an update to the kernel listed above.

After first getting it going, it has worked fine on both my Ubuntu computers and my Windows machines including a dual boot Ubuntu machine / Vista box. Recently, a problem has appeared that started at about the same time. The Ubuntu machines give me the "Unable to mount location, Failed to retrieve share list from server" error message. The Windows machines still work fine. This message can be caused by a number of problems. I suspect that this time was caused by a update. The linux machines are 11.04 and 10.10.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

I am running ubuntu 10.04 with two 1024x768 lcd monitors running from a Nvidia 9800gt graphics card running in twinview. I ant to maximixe WoW(World of Warcraft)(running under wine) as fullscreen across both screens. The WoW client recognizes a resolution option of 2048x768, but when i apply it, it squeezes it onto one monitor. how to fullscreen across both?
And i have removed the touching sides of the monitor cases so the screens touch directly so it is feasible to play.
also, i am using the latest nvidia drivers
I have been running into trouble with SDL programming. When my program hangs in fullscreen mode I can't find any way to get back to xwindows. Several times I have had to shut off my computer and restart. Is there some way to minimize or window a fullscreen application? I am using Ubuntu 9.10.

Every time the program starts it is full screen, and even if you can get to the "Leave fullscreen" button, it still reverts to full screen almost immediately.I have tried deleting all the aisleriot folders under .gconf/ but it still behaves in the same way.

[URL]... that is a 1080p flash video that runs completely smoothly for me when not in fullscreen mode, but after entering it the frame rate drops significantly. Am I the only one affected by this? 1. while playing any video file in VLC or any other player, i try to fullscreen or back to normal then the VLC just stopped for 5-7 seconds, video is running but in the screen it does not show running just sound comes.
2. while i open firefox or maximize it from clicking on taskbar, it take time similar thing the nautilus do when its going to maximize.
i don't know what the problem is, sometimes i feel it is because of compiz and emerald effact, but when i was ubuntu8.10 user, there was not such problem, it runs smooth.
I am not able to click CTRL+ALT+Left/Right when I'm playing games in full-screen.
