Ubuntu Multimedia :: Gnomad 2 No Longer Working After Upgrade?
May 10, 2010
After upgrading to Lucid Lynx I can't get Gnomad2 to work with my Creative Zen X-Fi. I used to get it to work by running Gnomad2 as a super user, but now the program quits itself when trying to get the songs from the device claiming a segmentation fault.
Code:
Device 0 (VID=041e and PID=4162) is a Creative ZEN X-Fi.
Queried Creative ZEN X-Fi

Long story short, my HTPC has a keyboard, but no mouse.I'd gotten pretty good at working the machine with no mouse, but after my upgrade to Natty Narwhal today, the Ctrl+Esc shortcut to open the Applications window no longer works. Alt+F2 only works when another application is already open.I can get to the Applications menu using Ctrl+Alt+NumLock and mouse emulation, but it's pretty painful.Have I messed something up here? My install went a little messy, but I've managed to get everything else working and I doubt a keyboard control would be a bad install/upgrade.

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS last Sunday, but now my Flash is no longer working and when I try to download from Adobe's site, it only gives me the 32 bit version which doesn't work on Ubuntu 64-bit. How to get Flash (64 or 32-bit) working on my 64-bit system?

I am running 10.10 on a 21.5 inch imac. I just ran some updates and rebooted, turned on rhythmbox to play some tunes and realized there is no sound. Tried ....., no yield. Tried a different user account still no sound. SO I rebooted into osx and I have sound. Its therefore a software issue for sure. I plugged in headphones and changed to the appropriate output in the settings manager, sound came out, but out of phase. What going on here? any ideas would be awesome.

Since my latest update to Ubuntu Lucid, VLC is no longer working. When starting VLC, I get an impractical dark interface that doesn't response to any command.
vlc -v gives this output:
Code:

It looks like a Qt4 problem, I have installed Qt4 with all possible dependencies, re-installed vlc several times but no effect! cvlc as proposed doesn't react.

I'm trying to install Gnomad and have got this far. I type ./configure and everything looks like its kinda working then it says
"No package 'glib-2.0' found
No package 'gthread-2.0' found
No package 'libnjb' found
No package 'gtk+-2.0' found
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables GN_CFLAGS and GN_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details."

I just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.10 and now my sound doesn't work (note: I don't know if sound was working on 9.4, since I only ran that long enough to upgrade again) Sound was working just fine under 8.10, and I just tried booting up with a livecd I had handy, which is 8.04.1 and sound worked right off the bat, no problems.I've checked the volumes on everything, including the master volume which WAS initially set to 0.Sadly, turning that up did nothing. The Pulseaudio Volume Control app seems to think nothing's wrong- it's picking up the sound from various applications just fine, the volumes are all on, etc. (aplay lists my soundcard fine:

My internal mic on sony vaio was not working on karmic 64bit. After I followed these instructions [URL] (updated alsa to 1.0.22) I got the microphone working, but now mplayer does not play any sound (although it plays files), as it tries to use pulse by default. However when run with -ao alsa, it works fine.
Other than that, the volume control has not effect on the sound, so every time I need to control it using alsamix.
When I remove pulseaudio, everything seems to be working, except gnome-volume-control and gnome-volume-control-applet do not start, and the keyboard volume controls dont work.
Here are the sound cards I have:

Today I did the following:
Code: Select allapt-get upgradeapt-get dist-upgrade
After a reboot the multimedia keys are not working anymore.
Also Code: Select allxev doesn't give any output when pressing the multimedia keys.
I've also checked the packages that were upgraded, but none seems (to me) to be changing anything in regard to key events.
Code: Select allStart-Date: 2015-07-29 09:17:10
Commandline: apt-get upgrade -V
Upgrade: libasan1:amd64 (4.9.3-2, 4.9.3-3), gdisk:amd64 (1.0.0-2, 1.0.0-3), cpp-4.9:amd64 (4.9.3-2, 4.9.3-3), libstdc++-4.9-dev:amd64 (4.9.3-2, 4.9.3-3), libpanel-applet0:amd64 (3.16.1-3, 3.16.1-4), python-debianbts:amd64 (1.12, 1.13),
[Code] ....
I'm on the Debian testing branch. Initially I used xfce, but am now using i3.
Why there are no events after the upgrade? Maybe I should downgrade some of the above packages?

I just ran one of my weekly upgrades last night (I'm using sid with the 2.6.32-5-686-bigmem kernel). Now compositing no longer works with kde (4.4.5). When I click "resume compositing," I get a message saying "Compositing has been suspended by another application." I'm using the radeon driver. My middle mouse button also stopped working after the upgrade, i.e., I can't use it to copy and paste; can't open new tabs in any browser using the middle button. (The mouse works perfectly in my other two computers, both of which still have kde 3.5.10 installed.) None of these problems existed before last night's full-upgrade, so the upgrade definitely broke a few things, and I don't know how to fix them.
glxinfo | grep render says direct rendering is working. But when I run glxgears, I only get text output, without the animated gears. The results from 'glxinfo | grep -i opengl' say "OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880.", and Im guessing that Gallium is causing my compositing problem. Would this also explain why the middle click on my mouse no longer works? Does anyone know how I can get compositing working again, and my mouse?

Summary: a long-working config involving a 1st-generation Ipod Touch with v1 firmware, Ubuntu, and Amarok 1.4 stopped working when I upgraded to Lucid.
A few years ago I was given a 1st-generation Ipod Touch, running the original v1 firmware (I never upgraded to the v2 firmware because v2 wasn't jailbroken at the time). I took it to a friend's place to activate and jailbreak it with her Mac laptop (I didn't have a Mac or Windows machine to install Itunes on; have been Linux-only for many years). Once jailbroken, I was happily able to use it with Hardy, Amarok 1.4, and ipod-convenience (which supply ipod-touch-mount/ipod-touch-umount).
This continued through upgrades to Intrepid and Jaunty. I didn't care for Amarok 2 in Jaunty, so I installed Amarok 1.4 from the ppa someone else made available. I continued to use it through Jaunty and Karmic, without any problems.
Last week I upgraded to Lucid. Syncing Amarok 1.4 to the Ipod Touch no longer appears to work; the Ipod fails to recognize any music transferred onto it (standard "No Music - you can buy music at Itunes" error screen), so I presume this is a libgpod/hash error. I have the FirewireGuid properly set in the .../Device/SysInfo file, as I always have.
Every time I use the Amarok Ipod "connect" function (which runs ipod-touch-mount) it tells me no valid Itunes db was found, and asks to initialize the db. I can then transfer music to the Ipod, and successfully disconnect, but it's not recognized on the Ipod after a respring or reboot.
I've tried RhythmBox and gtkpod briefly with no luck either.
Relevant installed packages:
Code:
ii amarok14 2:1.4.10-0ubuntu3~ppa5 Amarok 1.4 series
ii amarok14-common 2:1.4.10-0ubuntu3~ppa5 architecture independent files for Amarok
[Code]....
Edit: a little more info: after I let Amarok initialize the Ipod Touch and transfer a song to it, the iTunes.db that gets created on the Ipod is 0 bytes long. I presume this is the source of the problem, and indicates something is going wrong with libgpod's creation/editing of the db.
what I should do from here? I've tried removing the DB by hand, but it makes no difference - the subsequent operation to initialize the db results in the same 0-byte file.

I upgraded from wheezy to jessie, but now I just boot to a console. I've gone through and made sure all packages are up to their latest versions, and I've made sure gnome, xorg, and xserver-xorg are reinstalled (during the upgrade they got uninstalled..).
Here's what happens when I run startx manually:
Code: Select allcharlie@asimov:~$ startx
X.Org X Server 1.16.4
Release Date: 2014-12-20
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 x86_64 Debian
[Code] ...
Note also that this whole time, gdm3 has been running:
Code: Select allcharlie@asimov:~$ ps ax | grep gdm3
1058 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/sbin/gdm3
3993 tty2 S+ 0:00 grep gdm3
charlie@asimov:~$ sudo service gdm3 status
[Code] .....
I'm not sure why it prints that it's starting gdm3, but it does that every time I run `sudo service gdm3 status'.
Here's a copy of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

I have used a quite obscure device called Cideko AK0b [URL] .... for quite some time now and it has worked perfectly for almost 2 years now, both in Wheezy and in Jessie. However since I made an dist-upgrade a while back the mouse has totally stopped working. The system works through wifi - strangely enough - but everything else works. Keyboard and gamepad buttons. The manufacture says the things doesn't work on linux and so far I have proved them wrong.
But now the mouse is just out right dead no matter what I do. Have looked into mouse autosuspend but no avail so far. My suspicion is systemd but that is as good as any guess.
Running 3.14-2-amd64.
This is my dmesg.

The last time I updated Linux it was from Gibbon to Heron. (so 7.10 to 8.04 ) I'm now trying to get caught back up. Thing is, now that I updated from 8.04 to 8.10 I can no longer get to a GUI. Also, most of the text in the terminal is a diamond character as if the font that's installed doesn't want to work most of the time. This is somewhat confusing, but I believe my system's language was set as Japanese before the upgrade and now it's trying to display Kana and/or Kanji and the terminal doesn't like that. Not really important, but I'm not sure how to proceed to the next upgrade or get to a GUI. Fortunately, my system's set up to dual-boot with windows. Can someone help tell me how to get my GUI back or what package to install?
I'm running on a laptop with an ATI mobility Radeon 9700. I've had problems with it and drivers in previous versions back to 6.10 too, but never to the point that the GUI wouldn't work. It's actually an issue with my X Server. I tried "startx" and it says "No Screens found". I looked in my xorg.conf file and there are two screens listed at the bottom. It produced a log too, but I can't get my Flash drive to mount so I can't say exactly what it says. It did mention that there were a lot of font directories that didn't exist along with a few other warnings.

gedit has not been able to detect the character coding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.Select a character coding from the menu and try again. If I open OpenOffice first and then the document it works fine. If I use the shortcut directly, it won't open. Not overly impressed with 9.10 so far; things seem much slower, and it's certainly not as simple to find things as the old layout was.

My knowledge of how Linux works is very limited. I've used it for about a year, but just doing very basic tasks (browsing the Internet, listening to music, etc).
Anyway, I upgraded to the newest edition of Ubuntu and installed the new Grub as the update seemed to recommend installing it to every partition and hard drive. I've seen that other people are now having issues from doing that as well.
I am able to boot into Linux just fine; it is working great. However, when I attempted to load Windows XP from Grub, the computer would just restart. I followed the recommendation listed here: http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/sh...95&postcount=3 which seemed to fix the problem for Windows 7 users. Now, all I get when I attempt to load XP is a blank screen with nothing but a blinking cursor (but hey, at least the computer isn't just automatically re-booting, that's some sort of progress...maybe...)

Summary: After intermediate upgrade, Ubuntu Lucid LTS 10.04 64bit Desktop Edition will "NOW" not run in any Graphics mode on my machine.
General; Ubuntu has been my favorite OS to live on, play and relax. I have to use other OS'es, but I choose Ubuntu as "mine". I can go around it safely and tweak it to my own likings and needs. It has also been a great tool to exchange things between other OS'es.
History: I started with Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.04 64bit Desktop Edition. Last March, I upgraded to Ubuntu Lucid LTS 10.04beta 64bit Desktop via the Update Manager, using Ubuntu's instructions... as a Beta Tester. I kept up with Updates and everything had been fine. All went well, albiet minor adventures that gave me oportunities for enriched challenges and training. Overall, since the early days of that, my system has been very stable and reliable- Until last Saturday through Yesterday...
Problems: First thing I noticed is that there were some security updates Friday. Saturday when I came up into Ubuntu, it came up in error saying it had to come up in a low graphics mode. I shut down the system and restarted. It came up fine and I thought nothing more of it at the time...
Second, I tried to install Ubuntu Lucid LTS 10.04 64bit Server Edition on another drive. My other drives were isolated. Although the install said it was successful, on reboot, it would not boot the system. It would get a purple splash on my screen, then either lockup or go to a text based screen dump. Server Platforms said this was a text based OS and couldn't explain the purple flash or the error... I shelved this project until later and thought nothing more of it.I checked for updates through the weekend (even though there usually isn't any on weekends), and as usual it said everything was up-to-date.
Third, Monday the "Update Manager" said there was too many updates to do at once, that it needed to do a partial update. I selected, but it couldn't complete, because it said that there was conflict on a KDE package that it said it needed to remove, but couldn't because it was in a blacklist. It further said that this could have resulted from a DEV vervion of Ubuntu.
Fourth, I upgraded some packages through the Synaptic Package Manager, to try to reduce the number of packages that the Update Manager was trying to update. All those packages said they updated fine. I then went back to the Update Manager and it still said it needed to do a partial update... but it completed and said it was successful. I noticed that the top of the dialog box was tiltled "Distrubution Upgrade." I noticed that some of the files seemed to be an xorg upgrade... After the update, I had to do other things, so I shut down my system.
That was the last time this machine has been able to start Ubuntu. When Ubuntu tried to startup, it said it had to boot in a low graphics mode, but could not- it blasted the monitor with vertical purple and red lines.I had a copy of the Ubuntu Lucid LTS 10.05 64bit Desktop Edition LiveCD on my other machine. I burned a CD and tried. The only mode I can get to boot from the CD (on my machine) is in a text console- no xwindows system. On starting up an xwindows system will blast the grahics of the monitor, then (sometimes) continue to a monitor test-based screen dump that flashes by until the system locksup.

Upgraded to 10.10 with update-manager last night, apart from an xorg.conf.d location change and a custom xfce applet that needed recompiling all went smoothly... until I tried another dist-upgrade.
Previous I had debian lenny and squeeze available in apt - I know this is dumb but a sync program I use requires binary versions to be identical (unison), and I sync with a debian squeeze server.
