my sound was working fine until i've updated the kernel this morning through update manager. Now my sound doesn't not work, despite the sound card appears to be normal on sound preferences.

After the latest round of updates approx Sep 10, sound has stopped working. (I rarely need sound for anything so it took a while to notice.) In Yast :: Hardware :: Sound it lists all of the devices that were previously defined.
- 0: SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
- 1: RS780 Azalia controller
- 2: Logitech USB headset
- 3: USB Audio
Yet when I go to Gnome :: Control Center :: Hardware :: Sound and select the tab Hardware, nothing is listed. I suspect this is why there is no sound. How do I go about reloading the hardware into the hardware listing?
I just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.10 and now my sound doesn't work (note: I don't know if sound was working on 9.4, since I only ran that long enough to upgrade again) Sound was working just fine under 8.10, and I just tried booting up with a livecd I had handy, which is 8.04.1 and sound worked right off the bat, no problems.I've checked the volumes on everything, including the master volume which WAS initially set to 0.Sadly, turning that up did nothing.The Pulseaudio Volume Control app seems to think nothing's wrong- it's picking up the sound from various applications just fine, the volumes are all on, etc. (aplay lists my soundcard fine:

The latest Kernel update (2.6.35-25-generic) killed all my sound output on my Toshiba Satellite M115.
I tried reinstalling all ALSA components and plugins. No luck there.
Rebooting into 2.6.35-24-generic fixes the problem, in that my sound works again.
I am relatively new to the Linux System (8 months). I am having issues after upgrading the Scientific Linux 6 kernel from its current 2.6.x version to the latest version that SL6 has available. The issue is that once I install the upgrade and reboot, the internet becomes extremely laggy when scrolling on web pages, so much so that you get a ripple like effect as your scrolling. Which doesn't occur in the current kernel i am using.
Current Kernel is: 2.6.32-71.18.2.el6
New Kernel RPM update is: 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6
I wish I could figure out the problem but I am having trouble identifying what exactly the current kernel has that the new one doesn't that would cause the internet lag. I have read other topics with similar kernel update problems, but none have expressed an internet problem & only an internet problem from a kernel update.
I am getting a black screen on the latest kernel upgrade 2.6.31-20. My computer completely boots up, but goes black after a minute or two. For now, I am booting up with the previous kernel.

View 1 Replies View RelatedFor quite a long time now, I haven't even needed to re-install video drivers most of the time. However, ever since version 2.6.36-0.dmz.4, they haven't been. I booted my system after installing that kernel, re-installed the video drivers, and when that didn't work, completely removed them and re-installed them, and it still didn't work. Well, I was told that the installation was successful but even after restarting it appeared that they weren't working. I installed 2.6.36-0.dmz.5 today and the same problem persists. I tried an older kernel version (2.6.36-4 something) and they worked fine.

It cannot find my on board sound chipset and it's even taken away Alsamixer (no such file or directory) where I went to see if anything had become muted.I'm running 10.04 64 bit and I can't even find out how to get the grub loading screen. When I used to dual boot with Windows I could choose the previous Linux headers, now I can't even do that.

Until yesterday, my Audiophile sound card was working beautifully. I ran the latest update, and now it doesn't show up under Sound Preferences. (When I plugged in a USB headset, that appeared under Sound Preferences and worked just fine.)
The sound card IS listed under aplay -l.

I tried to install the latest RealTek driver for Linux and it has wiped all my devices. I've tried reinstalling the alsa-base packages but it hasn't worked
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been running Maverick 64bit fine on my Dell M1330 laptop until a couple of days ago. After the latest updates (I guess to kernel 2.6.35-24-generic), sound stopped working properly. The sound indicator applet tells me that the sound system is not responding. The login sound doesn't play anymore.
On the other hand Rhythmbox plays and I can hear the music. I can adjust Rhythmbox volume but not the global volume (as neither the sound indicator applet nor the multimedia volume keys on my laptop work).

Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

I just got the upgrade for the Linux Kernel version 2.6.40-4 on my Fedora 15 x86-64 box today, and the installation completed with no problems. However when I rebooted after doing the upgrade, I noticed that I had no sound. I use an ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card, and the opensource ATI driver, and use the HDMI audio from it for sound, since my monitor has a sound output jack on it. I've booted into the previous kernel (2.6.38.8-35), and sound works fine. I've tried with the new kernel in both KDE (my default desktop environment) and XFCE to get sound, and it does not work in either one. I've tried installing the VLC Phonon Backend instead of the GStreamer Backend, reinstalling Pulseaudio, reinstalling Alsa, modprobing the necessary modules needed for the card, checking all configurations with the available Pulseaudio tools (paprefs, pavumeter, pavucontrol), checked the volumes using alsamixer, and reinstalling the ALSA Pulseaudio plugin. After trying all of these, I can still get no sound out of any application, and I also noticed that Flash video plays at 2-3 times it's normal speed after the upgrade. Again, these problems do not occur on my previous kernel. Did I maybe overlook something, or can anyone else think of something I could try?

since I just upgraded my Natty to the new Kernel my Logitech USB mouse won't work anymore. I checked it on another notebook and the mouse works fine Before the upgrade, everything was fine as well.

I upgrade from F14 to F15 and at first everything seemed fine, but now I noticed that sound output over HDMI to my TV is no longer working (this worked fine under F14). the hardware in this case is the onboard sound card of my ASUS M3N-H/HDMI motherboard:

My audio worked completely perfectly running Fedora 14. I upgraded to Fedora 15 and discovered my audio no longer worked. As far as I know I didn't change anything. I do hear random pops and clicks from my speakers every few seconds. It's a bummer because this worked out of the box on Fedora 14 without any screwing around, and now it's totally broken in fedora 15. Everything else about my upgrade has been going pretty well, but life without sound is not nearly as fun and it's frustrating to have something not work that used to work just fine.
Here is some information and things I've tried:
- Just for grins I booted from the Fedora 15 live CD and observe the exact same issue as I see when I boot from my HD (just pops and clicks out of the audio.)
- motherboard: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 (using onboard audio)
- lspci reports: 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)
- cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep -i codec reports: Codec: Realtek ALC892 (this is what the motherboard manual lists as the audio hardware.)
- I've run pavumeter as some have suggested and I see outputs on both left/right channels when audio is playing (but still hear nothing but clicks and pops.)
- I've run "alsamixer -c 0" and verified all my levels are maxed out.
- I've opened up the sound settings dialog box and made sure the correct hardware device is selected, tried different profiles, tested left/right speakers, still no progress at all.
- I know I have the speakers on and plugged into the correct output jack, but just for fun I tried plugging the speakers into each of the other possible jacks, but that didn't help.
- lsmod (fedora 15) reports:
No sound, no ....., skype, rhythmbox, Ubuntu sounds ......nada. For a while, each of these programs had sound, while others did not. Now nothing. I've done a lot of searching, tried a few solutions, no joy. It's possible that I did some damage in the flash plugin.

I recently upgraded to 10.4 and lost my sound. I tried installing and uninstalling PulseAudio and various ALSA utilities but I have not been able to resolve my issue. Strangely, when I try to play an mp3 in an application like VLC and then open up the PulseAudio volume control, I can see a playback bar as if an audio signal is going out. I am not, however, able to hear any sound via internal speaker, analog headphones, usb headset, etc. I ran aplay -l and got the following result:

I have no sound after upgrading to 11.04. Sound control panel and test speakers emits no sound. The new music player won't play sounds from music CDs either.
I thought I had listened to a music CD since upgrading early last week, but not sure. I definitely don't have sound today even after rebooting.
Testing distribution. Installed Linux 3.0 but left 2.6.32 on as backup. When I boot into the old kernel, wireless mostly works OK, but never when I boot with the new kernel.

Noticing the Access Point looked like it needed the MAC address, I ran iwconfig wlan0 ap <MACADDRESS> and sometimes it will work, and wicd can connect to the access point. But sometimes the command fails to run.
Have been having my share of (nvidia) problems since last kernel update to fc11. Just can't seem to get x-server to work...
(Seems to me that I have had better luck with the 173xx legacy driver..Should I try that?...which one?..

Have blacklisted Nouveau in Modpobe... (Haven't done anything to grub.conf)... Have also tried to go the akmod route; but have never been able to make it work..
Have followed the instructions from Post 2 at the beginning of this thread; but I do get a message that says: "No package xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 available". I do have both rpmfusion repositories downloaded..
Today, I installed the recent kernel security update (i.e. 2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP). After a reboot, the sound is gone.
From my user account:

However, the commands "sudo alsamixer" and "sudo aumix" seem to work (but still no sound).

After i upgraded to karmic i experienced that the sound of spotify was at times strange. When i started a new song there was some strange plucking sounds, can most be understood as the sound a old LP-player makes when there is dust on the record. Not much but more than enough that I can hear it and wish it wasn't there. After some time of playing the songs sometimes was totally distorted by "disturbance" and it became impossible to even hear that there was a song there. Like when you are out of reception of a radio channel.
I did some research and upgraded to the wine1.2 with "custom" pulsaudio drivers. Then the total distortion was gone, but the, always present, plocking sound still was there. I have tested adjusting PCM volume, have some volume on mono, upgrading to newer pulsaudio drivers. The same problem is when ever my dear computer i producing sound. Spotify,firefox, rythmbox and mplayer. I can't see any answers after spending some time on google. I hoped i could fix this without deleting and removing pulsaudio.
Karmic ( kernel 2.6.31) does not support my TV card:

Where do I look for guidance on such a kernel upgrade? My impression is that grub permits booting to an earlier kernel so a boo is recoverable. While not particularly relevant, my card is a Chronos Video Shuttle II.
