Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Is No Longer Working After Update
Dec 5, 2010
I am running 10.10 on a 21.5 inch imac. I just ran some updates and rebooted, turned on rhythmbox to play some tunes and realized there is no sound. Tried ....., no yield. Tried a different user account still no sound. SO I rebooted into osx and I have sound. Its therefore a software issue for sure. I plugged in headphones and changed to the appropriate output in the settings manager, sound came out, but out of phase. What going on here? any ideas would be awesome.
Since my latest update to Ubuntu Lucid, VLC is no longer working. When starting VLC, I get an impractical dark interface that doesn't response to any command. vlc -v gives this output:
Code: VLC media player 1.0.6 Goldeneye [0x9d7f668] main libvlc warning: cannot load module `/usr/lib/vlc/gui/libqt4_plugin.so' (/usr/lib/vlc/gui/libqt4_plugin.so: undefined symbol: _ZN9QListData7append2ERKS_) [0x9e2e6d0] main demux warning: no access_demux module matching "file" could be loaded [0x9d7f668] main libvlc: Start vlc met standaardinterface. Gebruik 'cvlc' om vlc zonder interface te gebruiken. [0x9e5bfa0] main generic error: no dialogs provider module matched "any" [0xb7400e48] skins2 interface error: no suitable dialogs provider found (hint: compile the qt4 plugin, and make sure it is loaded properly) [0xb7400e48] skins2 interface: skin: subX author: Martin Poehlmann [0xb7400e48] skins2 interface warning: non-unique id: time [0xb7400e48] skins2 interface warning: non-unique id: songticker [0xb7400e48] skins2 interface warning: non-unique id: main.normal.dbuttons.info [0xb7400e48] skins2 interface warning: non-unique id: eq.onoff.lef [0xb7400e48] skins2 interface warning: non-unique id: eqwin.normal.titlebar.menu [0xb7400e48] skins2 interface warning: non-unique id: eqwin.normal.titlebar.clos
It looks like a Qt4 problem, I have installed Qt4 with all possible dependencies, re-installed vlc several times but no effect! cvlc as proposed doesn't react.
After running an update yesterday my sound stopped working. Here is the log that I found in synaptic.
Commit Log for Sat Feb 6 00:45:10 2010 Upgraded the following packages: devicekit-power (011-1ubuntu1) to 011-1ubuntu2 gnome-power-manager (2.28.1-0ubuntu1) to 2.28.1-0ubuntu1.3 gtk2-engines-pixbuf (2.18.3-1ubuntu2.1) to 2.18.3-1ubuntu2.2
[Code].....
I wasn't able to find which one of these could possibly cause the problem.
At least, I think it was the update that broke it. Anyway, my sound was working fine yesterday. I have gone through this thread to try and fix my sound, and it appears that my sound card has been uninstalled.

Last time my sound wasn't working, I was directed to this thread. The script from this thread might work again, but if it will just be erased after every update, I'd like something a bit more permanent.
I recently tried to add a repository by following the directions here: Banshee.fm/download and then select the ubuntu icon at the top. Here is the error I get when I try to run update manager: "Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:'E:Type 'banshee-team/ppa/ubuntu' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/banshee-team-ppa-natty.list'The command I entered was sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa. I have tried to remove all banshee related checks in software sources of the ubuntu software center. Then I just removed the lines all together. I still cannot open update manger. Get the same error. Anyone know of a fix?
Have a problem to decrypt emails after I updated to 5.3. Didn't change anything to the pgp or Kpgp settings and Kmail says that it failed decryption with openpgp. As I don't know what to look for or what to check I am lost.. it encrypts outgoing messages just fine.
I think an update or something has killed Samba on my Karmic box. it can see Windows shares OK, but it no longer appears on the Windows network.I have not changed my smb.conf for months, so something else has been modified.Looking in the logs I can see the following in "log.winbindd-idmap" after restarting Samba
recently installed 10.04 on his hp pavilion laptop and we got everything working fine, including the wireless internet. When he installed some recommended software updates his card is no longer being detected although wired networking is still fine.
All of a sudden I no longer have any sound on anything streaming over the Internet. Nothing wrong with the sound system because I can still play music. Just Internet sound.
I have a zoom H2 and I intend to use its usb microphone function.I connected it and it seems to work with xvidcap if I declare /dev/audio1 as the input device. Well.I want to go further and use it for other purposes and before installing jack and other applications I would like to understand why it does no longer appear in the "Sound preferences" under the 'input" and "hardware" tabs as it was the case the day before.
Since I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.31-18 I have been experiencing problems with my sound. 2.6.31-18 sound problems with nvidia MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78SThe laptop speakers no longer shut off when plugging in headphones. My sound control applet no longer appears in the panel. When launching a sound application sound starts off real loud for a second and then changes to much quieter. I have had this laptop since Hardy with never any sound issues. I do not know if it is the kernel upgrade or the accompanying backports modules. Could be neither for all I know and it just started around that time and is a coincidence.
Here is what was installed: Installed the following packages: linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-18-generic (2.6.31-18.20) linux-headers-2.6.31-18 (2.6.31-18.55) linux-headers-2.6.31-18-generic (2.6.31-18.55) linux-image-2.6.31-18-generic (2.6.31-18.55)
On my initial setup I follow the Comprehensive sound guide that is posted on the ubuntu forums because I wanted to get the spdif work Optical out with surround. After a while I was able some how to get it to work and but my headphones would no longer output sound so in an effort to get sound back to the headphones I maanged to ruin the the settings for the spdif. My question is how can I get spdif back and switch between headphones and spdif.I there no way to figure it out how do I purge every file that has to do with sound and recompile. ( THe comprehensive sound guide showed how to purge the alsa utils but that didnt work if someone know why please let me know and if you could explain.)
I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS last Sunday, but now my Flash is no longer working and when I try to download from Adobe's site, it only gives me the 32 bit version which doesn't work on Ubuntu 64-bit. How to get Flash (64 or 32-bit) working on my 64-bit system?
I recently updated my computer Using 9.10 and I updated on the 14th. Before the update my sound was working great. No problems, but afterwards my sound is completely gone and under hardware when I click the sound option on the speaker icon I get nothing listed under hardware.
I am using the HP DV2810 US notebook PC. With this being listed as the audio device.
I will also list the updates from my synaptic history. I'm having to use Win7 . And i only wanted that for the few games that one run well in wine.
Under 10.04, I was using my sound card just fine, but after a system update,I lost all my sound profiles and my sound. I'm using my mobo's SPDIF ( I have an ASUS p7p55d).
something has happened since I cannot longer watch streams which usually required quicktime (mov,qt), I've the medibuntu package and everything was fine till one week ago, maybe something within the last update... I'm using Karmic and Ubuntu Firefox 3.5.4

After upgrading to Lucid Lynx I can't get Gnomad2 to work with my Creative Zen X-Fi. I used to get it to work by running Gnomad2 as a super user, but now the program quits itself when trying to get the songs from the device claiming a segmentation fault.
Code: Device 0 (VID=041e and PID=4162) is a Creative ZEN X-Fi. Queried Creative ZEN X-Fi Segmentation fault
Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.
MPlayer was working just fine last night, but today I'm having problems which may be due to me performing a system update. I noticed that MPlayer was no longer listed in my Applications menu and I no longer had the option of opening videos with it. However, I now had Gnome MPlayer which must have been installed with the update because I never installed it. Whilst going through Synaptic, I found that the MPlayer GUI had been removed, so I re-installed it. However nothing happened when I attempted to open videos with it.
When I tried to use it through the terminal I got the error message: mplayer: relocation error: mplayer: symbol codec_wav_tags, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference
I found a bug report on this very problem here [URL]. The conclusion was that the person filing the bug report was using a version of ffmpeg not found in Debian and that he'd need a version of MPlayer built with his version of ffmpeg libs. I'm assuming that this is also the case with me, however I'm not sure how to go about finding a build or simply building a version of MPlayer with whatever version of ffmpeg that I'm using. For reference, I'm using Squeeze.
Recently I have started using my netbook (Acer Aspire one D250) alot more due to travelling and I noticed that the mic didn't work. Headed to the Ubuntu forums and saw a thread about installing ALSA. So I did and now I have no sound. From what I can tell ubuntu is no longer picking up my sound devices but I'm sure. Hence why I am here. I need to get my sound working again (obviously) and then in turn get my mic working for mumble and other VOIP programs.
I just installed the latest version of Ubuntu, and sound worked fine out of the box. I ran software update, and after the reboot, no sound. it knows there is a sound card, but no sound is coming out of any port. i done everything in the sound problems guide, and nothing worked. My soundcard is a Creative Sound Blaster Live! pci.
Yesterday I updated my ubuntu 8.04, after few months I haven't done it. Sound stops. I tried to remove pulse nothing happened. I installed Alsa mixer...nothing happens (when I open alsamixer, it is blank and if I select "Sound card properties" it crashes). I installed ac97_bus and souncore usinge modconf still no sound.
What can I do? My card is nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio,
I have no sound after upgrading to 11.04. Sound control panel and test speakers emits no sound. The new music player won't play sounds from music CDs either.I thought I had listened to a music CD since upgrading early last week, but not sure. I definitely don't have sound today even after rebooting.
I just installed 9.10 Karmic Koala and everything was kosher. I installed Amarok and the libxine plugins etc and was getting sound and able to play my mp3s, I let the update manager run and voila now without any sound. Machine is a gateway desktop using Realtek High Definition Audio.
