OpenSUSE :: Wireless Adapter No Longer Detected After Kernel Upgrade / Solve This?
Aug 17, 2011No wireless after upgrading to linux kernel 3.0 in opensuse 11.4. I'm using Kde and gnome 3, everything was working fine under the 2.6.39 kernel, but now both only detects my wired connection. Any help resolving this would be greatly appreciated. I have a Netgear WNDA3100 adapter that uses the Atheros drivers. It also is no longer detected in my Fedora 15 after upgrading the kernel, but it still works in Mint 11 with the 2.6.38.8 kernel.

Feb 15, 2010I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and the sound on my machine no longer works. I was previously using the OSS for sound. I'd like the sound solution that requires the minimal effort and I don't necessarily need to run OSS again. Ubuntu is installed on a Dell Optiplex 960.

May 2, 2010I had a working lirc using my hauppage card. After upgrade to Lucid, it no longer works. I don't see errors, but it appears to me is is not detecting the Hauppage card:

I have Ubuntu running on a netbook at work and all of a sudden my wireless connection not only doesn't work, it doesn't seem to exist! Wired still works fine, but the wireless option has vanished. How do I reset or restore or whatever it takes to get my wireless working again?

May 16, 2011I recently upgraded my Zepto laptop to Natty (11.04), and unfortunately the wifi no longer worked. I have a WPA net, and the combination with a Ralink chip seems unfortunate - judging from the number of internet posts.After browsing loads of threads on the 'net I think I have found a solution for 11.04 - it will work out of the box in 11.10 !
1) Add "blacklist rt2800pci" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
I think this makes the wifi stuff work as I can then do "iwlist wlan0 scan" and get reasonable output. But there is no integration with the Network Manager. So I have also done this (again, with inspiration from a few threads):
2) Edit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf - change the "managed=false" under "[ifupdown]" to "managed=true".
You may have to do a "service network-manager restart", restart or similar to get it going.It also seems I can suspend and get a wifi net connection upon wakeup.
Fedora :: 11 - Xp Roaming Profiles With Samba Pdc No Longer Works After Upgrade
Jun 17, 2009I was successfully using samba + fedora directory server in fedora 10 as a primary domain controller for my home network (achieved mostly by following barry905's instructions here: [url].
After upgrading to fedora 11, some of the pdc functionality no longer worked.
For example, when i ran 'pdbedit -Lv', i got:

I was able to fix this by adding to the [global] section in /etc/samba/smb.conf:

I also found that i could no longer join an xp computer to the domain. i discovered that for some reason, the samba administrator password had been cleared. after running:

That was fixed.
The last problem, which i have still not fixed, is that roaming profiles no longer work. when i try to do a domain login as user 'htpc' from an xp machine, i get the following message in xp:

May 28, 2010When I run update manager, it gives me an error message saying:

This can be caused by:
* A previous update which didn't complete
* Problems with some of the installed software
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
* Normal changes of a pre-release version of Ubuntu
if I click partial upgrade, it looks like it did during the upgrade, then says:

There are no upgrades available for your system. The upgrade will now be canceled.
if I click close from the first "not all updates can be installed" dialog, it says:

It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this issue at first.

In Synaptic, fixing broken packages does nothing. Mark All Updates > Apply seems to work, but I'd still like to figure out why Update Manager does not?

I tried deleting the connection and trying again but the modem is not detected in network-manager. The modem was working when i was using Karmic and still works on my UNR Karmic Netbook. I have tried various methods but I have not been able to get it to work.

May 29, 2010So my wireless card no longer works in my windows machine for some odd reason, probably due to the temporary video card I have until my actual one comes back from XFX. It works perfectly in the Ubuntu box though, so I bought a crossover cable hoping to have it automatically create a wired network that I can bridge to my router. Obviously it's not that simple.
Anyway, I have the computers connected through crossover cable and they sort of know there's supposed to be some form of networking going on (Windows has limited connectivity on "unkown network" while Ubuntu just won't connect to Auto eth0), but that's as far as I get. basically all I need is to:
1. Get the computers to connect to and communicate with each other.
2. Bridge the wired connection with the wireless one within Ubuntu so that the Windows computer can access the Internet as well as the shared files on the other computers in the wireless network.
I'm running 10.04 Lucid with Gnome desktop, if it makes a difference.

Jun 10, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu x64 on my dell studio 1535 using the windows installer (wubi).
All seems to be working fine apart from the built in wireless card, the proprietary driver (found in hardware drivers) installs and activates successfully and works perfectly. Until I shut down or restart the system. On the next boot the wireless card is 'disabled' and no longer works.
The card I have is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g
I am going to try a proper install on a second partition rather than using wubi later on but wondered if this was a commonly occuring problem?
The wireless card works as soon as the driver installs, however I am shown a "restart to activate driver" message and after restarting it's dead.

Apr 17, 2011I upgraded from lenny to squeeze on a notebook and I can no longer connect to the wireless network. The computer is an LG notebook and the network card is ralink rt2860. I am using Gnome and NetworkManager. The wireless key is WEP hex. It was working fine with lenny till before the upgrade. After the upgrade, the network card stopped working. So, I checked
$ lspci|grep Network

Then I reinstalled the driver with apt-get install firmware-ralink wireless-tools Then the network manager tray started working again and saw the network, but cannot connect. It was trying to connect but timed out and kept asking for the password. It is the correct password. I tried deleting the old connection and recreated a new one in the nm. But still does not work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can No Longer Install Windows On My Laptop / Solve This?
Jul 7, 2010Synopsis: I wiped my system and am using ubuntu 10.04 with no problems *except* that I now need IE 8 and MS Excel/Access/Powerpoint/Word for classwork. I kind of tried toying with WINE, but ultimately would rather just have a dual boot.
What occurs when I try a (any) Windows install (keep in mind I even swapped out a fresh Sata HD and the same problem occured:
Pop in a Windows ISO bootable CD>everything acts normal and I follow the prompts for a fresh install (not an upgrade)> It begins the install but the first part where it is "copying files" just goes to 100% in a split second>Then it moves down to the next prompt of "Expanding Files" at which point the laptop is spinning the disc/reading it but it just stays at 0%.
So, it's not a HD formating problem, right? I wiped the system, reformatted and got the okay from Windows that I could install so I assumed I reformatted it back to NTFS.
OpenSUSE Hardware :: Scanner Works But Won't Network / Solve This?
Mar 19, 2010Fresh install of openSuSE 11.2.
Laserjet 1220 multifunction device.
Successfully installed, network driver also installed, XSane shows both local and network scanner on local machine. Scans locally via both drivers.
However, networked scanner is not discovered by machines on local network, using XSane. Did a similar installation a few months ago with openSuSE 11.0, which works fine on the same client machine.
Have tried disabling firewall, but still no joy.
So, questions:
1] Is there anything I have missed?
2] Is anything known to be broken in 11.2?

May 4, 2011My webcam works at my end but two people have said they can't see me their end using skype. They webcam with other people so i know it is not their settings or anything. One has a mac and the other a windows machine. I really don't have anyone else to test this with as most people i know don't have webcams.

Everytime I try it says "Connection Failed: Unable to get IP address".It was working fine before and even when I reboot into an older kernel it still doesn't work.I'm using a Belking Wireless G adapter.I would have tried downloading another network manager but since I can't even access the internet I'm stuck with changing current settings and nothing seems to work.

May 8, 2010I made a USBbootdisk and installed 10.04 the day the final release came out. I installed it, used this post install guide http://blog.thesilentnumber.me/2010/...de-what-to.htm, and it has been working like a charm since then. When I went to log on to it today, the log in screen comes up as normal, I enter my password, ubuntu thinks about it for a minute, and then sends me right back to the log in screen.
I have an Asus EeePC 1005, dual booting Windows 7 Starter/Ubuntu 10.04
I just want to see if this is fixable before I wipe the partition and reload ubuntu.
Ubuntu Installation :: Printer No Longer Works?
Aug 1, 2010Have recently updated 10.04 with latest updates which included a new kernel and the printer no longer works. In-fact I can't even define the printer and I don't have a printer installed, the install script can't locate the printer on the USB. I have a cannon MP640.
I can print OK through windowsXP on virtualbox, printer is found OK.
Everything was fine until latest update.
Also my USB TV card doesn't work anymore, it also was OK before the update.

May 4, 2010I upgraded my system from 8.04 to 10.04.Now I keep getting errors saying that my adobe nonfree installation is bad. The worst part is that when I try to uninstall the Adobe package to start from scratch, it says that the problem is so bad that it can't be uninstalled, but must be re-installed.Of course when I try to re-install it, I get errors saying it's corrupt.I'm caught in a chicken and egg situation here.
Also, sound no longer works on my system.I think this is most likely a symptom of the first problem, but I'll just put it out there.I've read the other threads explaining how to fix this, but nothing works.
Ubuntu :: IPod Shuffle No Longer Works With Banshee?
Jul 26, 2010I have a 3rd gen iPod shuffle which I had loaded music onto in Banshee a few months ago. It worked fine until yesterday when I decided I wanted to delete a few tracks from it. When I mounted it and opened Banshee it said I had to rebuild the database or something to that effect. I did that and could then see all the tracks on it. I went ahead and deleted the few tracks I wanted to remove, and ejected it. When I tried to use it, it says "please use itunes to sync music." A little confused, I went back and deleted all the tracks on it (using Banshee) and reloaded some tracks. It still won't work.
I haven't changed anything in Banshee (as far as I know) and I have never plugged the shuffle into itunes. I've always used Banshee to manage it and never had a problem. The only major change I can think of that might have made a difference is upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04.

Nov 30, 2010I thought my Super key was not working to dim my notebook screen, thinking that it was a driver problem. However, I also noticed that my Super key no longer works. I read somewhere that in order to fix the Super key, you would have to use Keyboard Preferences and change 'Alt/Win Behavior' so that 'Super is mapped to Win-Keys'. There is no option like this for me to select. Moreover, this will not fix my function key issue and my eyes are beginning to strain from my screen being at max brightness all the time.
