Debian Multimedia :: Wireless Mouse Stopped Working After Dist-upgrade
Sep 30, 2014
I have used a quite obscure device called Cideko AK0b [URL] .... for quite some time now and it has worked perfectly for almost 2 years now, both in Wheezy and in Jessie. However since I made an dist-upgrade a while back the mouse has totally stopped working. The system works through wifi - strangely enough - but everything else works. Keyboard and gamepad buttons. The manufacture says the things doesn't work on linux and so far I have proved them wrong.
But now the mouse is just out right dead no matter what I do. Have looked into mouse autosuspend but no avail so far. My suspicion is systemd but that is as good as any guess.
Running 3.14-2-amd64.
This is my dmesg.
Code:

After running a dist-upgrade (from stable to testing) KDE stopped working, all I get (after login in with lightdm) are the modals you can see in the attachments [1]. I do not think it is an X issue, because I can login using lightdm (and MATE is working fine).
I suspect this is because I had KDE installed before running the upgrade. The things I tried so far are:
- Runing "apt-get remove kdelibs-bin kdelibs5-data" . Then "apt-get autoremove". I did it to remove every KDE related package, after that, I ran "aptitude purge '~c' " to clean all config files. And finally "apt-get install kde-standard" to get KDE again.
- Removed .cache, .config and .kde folders. Also removed .lock files in .config folder, as I saw somewhere.
- Looked for some log files, but I could not find anything (I don't even know where to look really )
This is almost a fresh debian install so I don't mind breaking things, but I would like to get KDE working.

updated my jessie by apt-get dist-upgrade and there was an error said there was something wrong with some database, and I needed to run some command, but after the upgrade I forgot to run the command. After I rebooted my system I found there was not any password needed for a normal user or the root. But if I change to the emergency mode, a root password is needed.

My wireless mouse stopped working about a week after i bought it. i replaced the batteries, and tried restarting my computer. I also tried putting the receiver in all of the other usb ports, to no avail. Where is the driver software that was installed when the receiver was plugged in located on my computer? I plan to un-install this and hope that it works when it is installed again.

After yesterday's apt-get dist-upgrade, I lost my higher screen resolutions. Only had 800x600 and 640x480. After trying to re-install the Nvidia drivers several different ways without success, I ended up purging xorg and xserver and then starting from scratch, re-installing the drivers. In doing so, I either found the problem, or created another, ha.I think part of the problem was that I mixed Nvidia proprietary and debian installations and the update broke the drivers.I am now unable to install xorg or xserver because I can not remove/purge libgl1-nvidia-alternatives.

Last night I tried updating from Testing to Sid. Big mistake. Not sure what I did wrong... I changed my repos to sid, and did the usual update / dist-upgrade / autoclean / autoremove. I did not see any significant error messages during the update process. Now, I had fluxbox, gnome and openbox installed. The weird thing is after rebooting I could no longer boot into gnome or openbox as they had merged into something GNOME/Openbox, which was essentially the openbox panel, the nautilus menu on right click, and nothing else. So I purged them both but now when I try to reinstall gnome I get unresolvable dependencies (at least in the sense that both apt-get and aptitude fail to resolve them). fluxbox is still working fine, although it's missing a few things as I was using many gnome apps inside fluxbox.

I have a Broadcom wireless card in my hp dv6500z laptop, I had it all working properly in FC9 thanks to bbfuller and his post on the subject. After I upgraded to FC11 I have been unable to get it to connect.
I can see my neighbor's sites and suppose I could see my own if the SSID was allowed to broadcast but I keep that turned off. I put in all of the setting, including the network security key, but it won't connect, then when I go back and look again, the security key is not even close to what I put in; it gets changed to a huge string of characters.
I redownloaded broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2.tar and followed the instruction on the post once again but no luck, which, after I thought about it, was a waste of time because if I can see other's wireless, then the card must be working. I have tried using Network Manager and not using Network Manager and still no luck...

Like many others it seems, my wireless has stopped working since a recent upgrade The answer does not lie in analysis of logs, settings etc. but surely with those who did it - they should provide a fix. I cannot believe everyone expects each individual users to go into their own analysis of why this is no longer working as it is clearly widespread. I have been using Ubuntu for 18 months without this problem on the same dual-boot laptop, and it still works on Windows as before, only Ubuntu 10.4 has recently stopped my network card from working.
I need to know when this will be fixed. I have been embarrassed by promoting Ubuntu to many colleagues who now also cannot work at home on their wireless networks. Seriously disillusioned I may start looking for a more stable alternative to Windows.

I just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.10 and now my sound doesn't work (note: I don't know if sound was working on 9.4, since I only ran that long enough to upgrade again) Sound was working just fine under 8.10, and I just tried booting up with a livecd I had handy, which is 8.04.1 and sound worked right off the bat, no problems.I've checked the volumes on everything, including the master volume which WAS initially set to 0.Sadly, turning that up did nothing.The Pulseaudio Volume Control app seems to think nothing's wrong- it's picking up the sound from various applications just fine, the volumes are all on, etc. (aplay lists my soundcard fine:

I hadn't upgraded my multimedia Squeeze box in a month, so I ran a "apt-get dist-upgrade"; I think henceforth I'll stick to "apt-get upgrade" most of the time. Anywho, I got to the point that restarting PAM required me to restart KDM (I haven't seen that snafu on Ubuntu, it seems like there ought to be a way to upgrade without restarting X and running "dpkg --configure -a" and then continuing the upgrade). Anyway, after restarting my dist-upgrade I got part way through and got an error message. The gist of it seems to be this:
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xserver-xorg-core : Recommends: libgl1-mesa-dri (>= 7.10.2-4) but 7.10.2-3 is installed
code....
So apt is wedged and it seems like I have a partial upgrade, various little things are not working in Gnome, KDE & XFCE (like icons, plasma seems to be somewhat borked). Although I'm using the radeon driver this seems to be some variant of this bug from mid June: url
I'm not having the issue with my laptop (Intel) or desktop, both testing, although both of the machines do have issues, particularly the desktop (serves me right for buying newish hardware). But this box is pretty bog-standard.01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 [Radeon HD 4290]
Maybe I should just strip off xserver-xorg* and reinstall? Or I can wait libgl1-mesa-dri sorts itself out, but it seems like it has been causing problems for over a month.

Dell Vostro 230 with integrated Broadcom NIC.
Wakeonlan was working just fine with Wheezy on this machine. After upgrade, wakeonlan will resume from suspend but not from shutdown.
I have no problem with other machines (same software setup) after upgrade. None of my other machines have a broadcom NIC.
No BIOS settings were changed during the upgrade. If I enter the BIOS on boot and make sure settings are correct then 'save' and shutdown, without booting to debian, I can then successfully wakeonlan. Then, if I do not boot debian, but shutdown before debian starts, I can wakeonlan successfully again.
If I boot debian and then shutdown, game over: wakeonlan nolonger works.
$ ethtool eth0 | grep -i wake
Supports Wake-on: g
Wake-on: g
A bit of research found the suggestion:
$ lspci -tv | grep -i ether

$ cat /proc/acpi/wakeup
Device S-state Status Sysfs node

How to get wakeonlan working under Jessie with a Broadcom BCM57788?

I recently updated to squeeze following the Debian release note steps, and most everything went smoothly. However, I'm now unable to get into the Nagios web interface. The service is still running and sends email notifications of issues as usual, but logging into the web interface gives me a 403 Forbidden error.

I just did a dist upgrade on two computers. One of them was fine with the network manager, but the other, netbook, now refuses to start the service. If I do service start network-manager I'll get a message saying a process started, but it must be immediately dying since I can't find the pid or any network manager processes at all. I looked at daemon.log and noticed it was complaining about nm-system-settings.cfg not being there. One question I have is how is this not getting generated? It's not in the deb so somehow it must be generated. I put a fake file in there and even put some data from a pastebin I found online that looked promising, and the message in daemon.log went away but the pids were still dropping off.
I have many problems with nm-applet, but I don't want to go into it so much now that the service can't start. The problem I do see popping up is something like: ** (nm-applet:2622): WARNING **: <WARN> applet_dbus_manager_start_service(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service. Message: 'Connection ":1.24" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings" due to security policies in the configuration file' (had to pull message from online, don't remember the exact message) I've tried installing and reinstalling, doing a purge uninstall. Next thing I was going to try is an aptitude uninstall of all of the dependencies in case something got weird in the upgrade.

Summary: a long-working config involving a 1st-generation Ipod Touch with v1 firmware, Ubuntu, and Amarok 1.4 stopped working when I upgraded to Lucid.
A few years ago I was given a 1st-generation Ipod Touch, running the original v1 firmware (I never upgraded to the v2 firmware because v2 wasn't jailbroken at the time). I took it to a friend's place to activate and jailbreak it with her Mac laptop (I didn't have a Mac or Windows machine to install Itunes on; have been Linux-only for many years). Once jailbroken, I was happily able to use it with Hardy, Amarok 1.4, and ipod-convenience (which supply ipod-touch-mount/ipod-touch-umount).
This continued through upgrades to Intrepid and Jaunty. I didn't care for Amarok 2 in Jaunty, so I installed Amarok 1.4 from the ppa someone else made available. I continued to use it through Jaunty and Karmic, without any problems.
Last week I upgraded to Lucid. Syncing Amarok 1.4 to the Ipod Touch no longer appears to work; the Ipod fails to recognize any music transferred onto it (standard "No Music - you can buy music at Itunes" error screen), so I presume this is a libgpod/hash error. I have the FirewireGuid properly set in the .../Device/SysInfo file, as I always have.
Every time I use the Amarok Ipod "connect" function (which runs ipod-touch-mount) it tells me no valid Itunes db was found, and asks to initialize the db. I can then transfer music to the Ipod, and successfully disconnect, but it's not recognized on the Ipod after a respring or reboot.
I've tried RhythmBox and gtkpod briefly with no luck either.
Relevant installed packages:
Code:
ii amarok14 2:1.4.10-0ubuntu3~ppa5 Amarok 1.4 series
ii amarok14-common 2:1.4.10-0ubuntu3~ppa5 architecture independent files for Amarok
[Code]....
Edit: a little more info: after I let Amarok initialize the Ipod Touch and transfer a song to it, the iTunes.db that gets created on the Ipod is 0 bytes long. I presume this is the source of the problem, and indicates something is going wrong with libgpod's creation/editing of the db.
what I should do from here? I've tried removing the DB by hand, but it makes no difference - the subsequent operation to initialize the db results in the same 0-byte file.

My GNOME system stopped using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers after the recent dist-upgrade to v6.0.1. It was working perferctly before that.
My inxi output:

When I tried to configure the screen resolution using NVIDIA X server settings, I was told to run 'nvidia-xconfig'. I ran it, restarted X but my resolution is still stuck at the maximum of 1024x768. I've tried running the above many times with the same results. I even tried aptitude reinstalling but still the same.

I have been using Debian for around two years now. I have a small home server running Debian stable i386 and keep it regularly updated (once or twice a week I perform apt-get update and afterwards apt-get dist-upgrade). The system was originally installed with Debian Wheezy and afterwards upgraded.
However, after entering dist-upgrade tonight, around 42 packages had to be updated. I agreed and afterwards got some errors. After apt-get install -f, the result is as follows:
Code:
Select allnickolay@tegulicium:$ sudo apt-get install -f
Reading package lists ... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information ... Done
[Code] ....
After rebooting the system, I am presented with the Debian Maintenance mode (root password for maintenance or Control-D to continue).
I tried dpkg --configure -a, apt-get install -f and aptitude install -f.
Unfortunately, still no resolution of the conflicts.
I assume this has to do something with the new Jessie 8.2 release ...

My friend has an ubuntu 810 machine and he wants to remove it and install debian on that.Instead of cleaning and installing, I thought why not change the sources.list and do a dist-upgrade to debian. In case it is required, I dont mind purging packages like x or desktop etc. from ubuntu to make it thin before upgrading to debian.Has anyone tried this approach instead of a clean install?
