Ubuntu :: KNode Timeout On Server?
Apr 23, 2011
My KNode gets a 'timeout on server' when loading newsgroups. I've read that you should tweak the server timeout (settings -> configure knode -> accounts newsgroupserver -> edit -> server timeout). However, when I try this out the properties window of my news server has no 'server timeout'. What can I do now?
(KNode version 4.4.8, KDE version 4.4.5)

I have used knode for nntp browsing ever since I settled on openSUSE a few years back. I have a reasonably large collection of useful messages stored in local folders so that I don't lose access to them as knode expires and drops them from the original groups. Testing out the KDE4 version of knode I find that I am no longer able to drag/drop the messages I want to keep to the local folders - in fact, I can see no obvious way to get them there.
Am I just missing an obvious setting or has this feature gone away? Loss of
it would be a show stopper for me.

I set the default os to boot as windows 7 with a timeout of 1 second. I thought that this would be enough time to switch os ubuntu when i need to, but I am unable to. How can i reset the timeout to 3 seconds? I also cannot view the ubuntu partition within windows because of ubuntu's file system.

I am on CENTOS 5.4 64 Bit Servers.
I have created a script which runs some commands on remote servers.
I am stucked when a server is not responding timely.
I want to set a timeout say after 10 seconds, if I am unable to login (for whatever reason) I should be dropped back at the shell.
I tried using LoginGraceTime but it is not working for me as below:
Code:
LoginGraceTime 10s
or
LoginGraceTime 10

I have a box running Fedora 14 upstairs and I've been trying to get it to run VNC server, unsuccessfully. I've RTFM, and followed the instructions step-by-step, but it still won't run. I'm getting no error messages. But when I try to connect from either a Window or Mac client, it either get a timeout or connection refused. I've read and tried all the troubleshooting; been working on this for about 12 hours now. Is there something major that I could be overlooking?

I have an RHEL 4 server now running 2.6.9-89.0.18. After installing the kernel and rebooting to make this the current kernel, the grub menu to choose the kernel failed to offer a countdown and did not choose the kernel as it should have. I had to manually select the kernel.I inspected the grub.conf file and could not find any clue as to why it didn't work. The timeout directive is there, and the syntax matches other systems we have with the same kernel and OS.Can anyone provide any insight as to what else (other than a typo on the conf file) would cause this? The only difference between the way the kernel update (and the subsequent changes to the grub conf file) took place was a manual install of the RPM on the affected system, versus pulling it down from RHN using up2date.

I am trying to stream video from my Fedora 12 server to my XBox 360 via uShare 1.1a. I have opened the port I have specified in the ushare.conf file and in verbose mode, uShare sees every video I want to share. The XBox sees the uShare under "Computer", but I get a connection timeout when trying to connect to it. /var/log/messages shows no errors with uShare. I can connect to the uShare web interface without any problems. Most people seem to be using uShare with Ubuntu,

I have multiple computers set up in my home (self education on networking) with one used as the main machine, and the others set up as a variety of server types. The main machine is running Lucid, as gui based os. The others are all running the server version. NO Domain controller is installed, no DNS server is installed.
ALL of the server machines boot to a login prompt, allow user name and password entry, and then will fail to login with a timeout error. After anywhere from 8-15 tries, the login will eventually succeed. Error also occurs when logging in via ssh.

We are running several server with SLES10SP3 and samba. After the service is running for a while we are getting timeouts for 15-20 seconds during a ping on the fqdn before he can resolv the name, same happens with traceroute and ssh. ping on a ip is successfull at once and nslookup is not showing any errors.
After a restart of the smb, nmb and winbind services the nameresolution is functioning normally again.
I honestly dont know where to start looking, this is a virtualized system and i checked the hypervisor (vsphere) logs but those turned out clean.

[felipe@nimitz ~]$ ls -lZd
drwxr-xr-x. felipe apache system_ubject_r:httpd_sys_content_t:s0 .

I installed htop a few days ago and have been looking on it for a few days now. the server idles on about 80~ish tasks constantly with arond 20 apache tasks/connections to it all the time and the cpu usages of the 2 cores at about 1% each. but asoon as more apache2 connections/task get started and the servers tasks reach 120-140~ Apache2 timesout if you try to go to the webpage i host on the server. when it's back down to around 80~tasks you can reach the webpage once again. why is this ? what's causing this to happen ?

I've configured the RADIUS to use a PostgreSQL DB for accounting. Everything works fine if the connection from the RAD to the SQL is OK. If the PostgreSQL service dead, the RAD will skip the failed connection and continue to work. That's OK, too. But if I shutdown the network interface of the SQL (simulating a connection lost - timeout problem), the RAD thread which processes accounting request will be hung up, remains as active and unresponsive forever. So the RAD will not return anything to accounting client (my NAS).
As more accounting requests come, spare threads for processing the requests will reduce and be used up eventually. I've debugged for a while and found it's the problem of PQexec() function. The function blocks the thread eternally till if the connection lost. I know the RAD version is a little outdated, but I cannot replace it right now. I wonder if there's a way to make the RAD reply to the NAS even when the connection between the RAD and the SQL lost.

Im trying to run a headless box but grub has no time out so it sits until I plug in a keyboard and hit enter. I have tried to put a timer on using 'startup-manager' but this seems to be ignored.
When it boots I get GNU GRUB version 1.99~rc1-13ubuntu13 and a list of operating systems. Unless I hit enter it will wait forever.

So I'm dual booting Windows 7 and Lucid. Thinking I might shorten the timeout for the bootloader (I apologize if my terminology's off), I ran bcdedit and changed the timeout to 0. Little did I know this would prevent my computer from booting into either operating system.
I've got Lucid running off a live cd now; does anyone know how I could change the timeout back from there (or any other way!) and get my laptop working again?
