I just installed kubuntu 910 via cd iso. now i want to change the default grub timeout. It says i dont have permission to edit etc / default /grub so what do i do? i dont know how to login as root user.

How can i reset the timeout to 3 seconds? I also cannot view the ubuntu partition within windows because of ubuntu's file system.

I have edited etc/default/grub so that it has GRUB_DEFAULT=6 (to correspond to my XP installation) and GRUB_TIMEOUT="3", but after running sudo grub-mkconfig the grub.cfg file still says set default="0".

Unfortunately, with the various 2.6.32 kernels neither hibernate nor suspend work, so I've installed and use the last 2.6.31 kernel that came with Karmic.Now, I'd like to set it as default, so that I don't need to actively choose it when I boot. The problem is that I can't find a way to set Grub (version 2.0, or 1.96rc, can't remember) to pick the 2.6.31 kernel and if I try to uninstall the 2.6.32-23 kernel synaptic says that linux-generic and linux-headers will also be uninstalled (not just the parts specific to 2.6.32-23).

Right now, XP is default BUT every time there is an update to Fedora, it will change the default to Fedora. I now have to edit grub.conf to boot from xp again. Is there a way to make xp always as the default even after an update?

I'm extreemly new to Ubuntu and installed 10.04 onto a partition this morning. When I boot up my PC a menu called GRUB comes up and the list of OS's has ubuntu 1st. If I dont change my selection to vista it automatically boots into ubuntu. How can I change the order or default booting OS? I have seen other people talk about it but I'm not sure if it's up to date.

As part of the installation, SPM had me reboot the computer (which is dual-booted with Windows XP, which I use less than 1% of the time). The new GRUB screen came up showing two new initial lines, the first 2 of the following 4 lines:Ubuntu,

When I allow the default choice of the first line to prevail, Ubuntu boots up into a condition in which the Wireless Network Connection fails to open, and in which nothing I've been able to think of makes it open.
If, instead, I scroll down to the third line (which was the initial default choice line, i.e., the default choice line prior to the "virt manager" installation), Ubuntu boots up into a condition in which the Wireless Network Connection operates as usual, viz., immediately.
Scrolling down works, but it would be better, it seems to me, to return to the condition in which the current line 3 either becomes line 1 or else becomes the default bootup choice.
I've used SPM to uninstall "virt manager", but the 2 new intial lines in the GRUB options remain. I understand that with Karmic's version of GRUB, viz., GRUB-2, it is no longer possible to change the bootup menu choices easily.
how I can either eliminate the first 2 lines in my current GRUB screen, or make line 3 the default choice?
I just got to finish installing ubuntu lastest version on my new netbook, im really exited about how powerful it can get. The thing is, I'm still keeping my old Windows 7 partition and data, and I want to access it faster, editing the grub options, to change the timer on it, and the default booting option.

I tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. I am trying to edit grub so that it doesn't timeout the menu. I've found a lot of solutions to this where I edit menu.lst. However, this file is blank when I open it. I just upgraded to Lucid and kept a lot of my old grub settings (I had customized it somewhat). Also, I am not sure if I have grub or grub2. How can I figure this out?
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust installed kubuntu 10.4 on a netbook (dual booting with WinXP) but by default grub just boots directly into kubuntu. When editing /etc/default/grub I have tried setting the timeout to 10, 100 and now its at -1 (which should be sit there forever)I then run update-grub which generates the new config reboot and the same thing happens, it immediately boots to kubuntu. I see the menu appear for a split second, but no matter how fast i try, i cannot see to hit any button fast enough to kill the timeout so i can switch to XP.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed last ubuntu from windows 7 using wubi and it worked great, i am writing this from ubuntu. The problem is I changed the timeout to 0 on windows 7 startup options as well default operating system to ubuntu, so now i cannot boot to windows because the windows 7 boot manager just flashes and goes directly to the grub boot manager and even if try to choose windows 7 on grub boot manager it only goes back to windows 7 boot manager and the same thing happens.
I have no DVD drive and i only have a 1Gigabyte USB PEN.
I already searched insanely on ubuntu forums, used unebooting, tried creating a windows 7 startup disk with unebooting, tried formating USB PEN with GLParted and choosing FAT32, ex3, NTSF as well with boot flag and then copying files to usb, wich didnt work. I tried to fix it with SUPER GRUB DISK didnt work too....
Is there anyway i can change this little timeout setting from windows 7 boot partition (yes i really learned something) so i can boot to windows 7? By whatever method, it can be from within ubuntu or using a 1Gb pen?
I know it can only be changed using bcdedit.exe but not even with wine it worked.
Yesterday I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 (x86_64). The upgrade itself succeeded, but now after booting I have to press enter in the grub OS list. grub.cfg looks like this:

Running openSUSE 11.2 with Gnome. After a relatively short period of time, screen goes blank, and when I click on it, I get presented with password prompt, and when I enter it, I'm back where I left off. I don't see how to change this, and all the time I've spent so far in YaST trying to find out where this setting is kept and how to change it has been wasted effort. So now I'm asking: how do you change this to something a little more reasonable?
I'm taking an online SuSE LINUX class, and as they cover different topics, I jump over to the Linux system (which I have running in a vm under VMWare server on W2K3) and try stuff out, and most of the time I have to enter my password because I was away too long.

I have been unable to locate an answer to the below.Just installed 10.10 server and noticed that during boot each time the Grub Menu pops up. I have an Alienware M11x r2 laptop running Windows 7-63 and Ubuntu 10.10 Unity installed.It was all fine and dandy until I changed my grub timeout to 1 sec (or perhaps 0, its been so long i can't remember!) to reduce the waiting time until an OS boots.My grub was set to boot to Windows 7 as default.Now when I boot up I cannot halt the boot process not matter what key I press (e.g SHIFT).I am doomed to forever boot into Windows. I have an RHEL 4 server now running 2.6.9-89.0.18. After installing the kernel and rebooting to make this the current kernel, the grub menu to choose the kernel failed to offer a countdown and did not choose the kernel as it should have. I had to manually select the kernel.I inspected the grub.conf file and could not find any clue as to why it didn't work. The timeout directive is there, and the syntax matches other systems we have with the same kernel and OS.Can anyone provide any insight as to what else (other than a typo on the conf file) would cause this?The only difference between the way the kernel update (and the subsequent changes to the grub conf file) took place was a manual install of the RPM on the affected system, versus pulling it down from RHN using up2date.

I have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. array 1:
slot 0 & 1
array 2:
slot 2 & 3
during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.
