Ubuntu :: Windows 7 Boot Selector Timeout?

Jun 24, 2010

So I'm dual booting Windows 7 and Lucid. Thinking I might shorten the timeout for the bootloader (I apologize if my terminology's off), I ran bcdedit and changed the timeout to 0. Little did I know this would prevent my computer from booting into either operating system.

When editing /etc/default/grub I have tried setting the timeout to 10, 100 and now its at -1 (which should be sit there forever)I then run update-grub which generates the new config reboot and the same thing happens, it immediately boots to kubuntu. I see the menu appear for a split second, but no matter how fast i try, i cannot see to hit any button fast enough to kill the timeout so i can switch to XP.

Ubuntu :: FSTAB Timeout - Recover Lost Partitions ?

Feb 21, 2010

I woke up this morning to a non-booting 9.10 computer. After my grub screen disappears, I get the familiar Ubuntu b/w logo in the center of my screen. My hard drive cranks for an abnormally long time and then I get the following error:

I booted into a live CD and opened up GPARTED and my sdb4 (my /home location) partition shows up. I do a check on it and it seems ok.

I opened the Palimpsest Disk Utility to see what it said and it shows sdb4 as Unknown or Unused. I can not mount this drive using GUI methods.

I did some research on the forums looking to recover lost partitions. here is the output from fsck

Code:

and the abbreviated output from fdisk -l

Code:

Disk identifier:

This seems ok too.

My next step was to try testdisk. When I ran it, I was able to navigate this partition and apparently see all my files. I then tried to mount the partition manually.

Code:

That also worked.

It seems to me that I practically have this thing where I need it without too many worries.

My question is: What is the next step to get this back booting again? I'm afraid of rewriting the partitions in testdisk until I get some feedback on whether this will really solve my problem. Maybe the partition isn't the problem? Is it something else and I've been going down the wrong path?

Ubuntu Networking :: PPTP Connection Failing With LCP Timeout

Mar 6, 2010

I'm using Kubuntu 9.10, my pppd version is 2.4.5 and pptp is 1.7.2 I'm trying to connect to the iPredator VPN service, but I keep running into problems with LCP. I've tried using knetworkmanager, nm-applet, kvpnc and plain old text-based configuration to no avail. Here's a snippet of pppd's output:

[Code].....

(I've got "defaultroute" in my /etc/ppp/peers/ipred config file.) Any ideas what could be causing this? Could it even be my router? It claims to support PPTP, but considering it claims a lot of other things which aren't true, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the culprit.
