I also have an iMac..2 external hard drive and a BSNL 3G usb data card. I want to setup a network so i can share my files and internet connection between the 3 systems. I don't know what i want to do is possible or not. what i want to do:
1) connect the usb data card to Acer and share the internet connection using the inbuilt wireless card in the laptop so that the dell and imac can access it.
2) connecting the 2 ext. hard drive to Acer and sharing the files over the same connection( wireless connection used to share internet with other systems) so that i can access the files from my dell and imac. I want to mention that i don't have a router.
if yes..how? and if not why? i'm a newbie..so plz help me..earlier also this forum helped me a lot in learning linux..hope this time also i will have some good experiences.
How do I get sound working on xubuntu?I hear I need to download drivers etc.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI usually use Ubuntu, but installed Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Fedora (xfce). However, none of these three will boot into the desktop! Xubuntu and Fedora-xfce seem to boot, but before it loads the desktop the screen stays black and nothing happends. With Kubuntu, it loads the login screen but every time I try to log in the screen goes black, then it returns to the login screen again. It will just keep doing this until you reboot or shutdown.
I cant see any type of error messages come up and my current install of Ubuntu (11.04) seems unaffected.Does anybody know what is happening here? is it a common bug/problem or something no one has really heard of before? Im just really stumped and cant seem to get anywhere with it,
For the first time since I use xubuntu I have needed the external mic jack to do some recordings and it does not work. Here is the data I get with "amixer", "aplay -l", "lspci -v" and "modprobe snd + TABkey" For my hardware setup please see my signature.

I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work.What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system.So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

I like the xfce desktop environment over the gnome one. So when i chose an emergency plan B in case something happens to windows AND/OR arch, i always try Xubuntu. I have made multiple live disks from multiple computers, and none of the live disks function properly. One went haywire when i tried to update the system(can't remember exactly what went wrong), one would not even actually boot into the live disk, one would not install, and so forth and so on. At first i just though it was something wrong with the iso since the download had been paused and resumed multiple times, but right before i chose arch linux a friend tried using his xubuntu disk and it failed to work either, and i recently tried using another computer and had another failed result.

it is a very similar problem to this except that i am using ubuntu for the machine with the two connections.
right now i have my wireless on the 192.168.1.* address space, while the LAN is to be on 192.168.5.*
note: my goal is not to share internet with my laptop, just be able to connect to it and the internet at the same time.
desktop: ubuntu 9.10 , wireless and LAN
laptop: windows xp, LAN only
I recently installed ubuntu on my mom's computer but I can't get the mouse to move trough the touch pad and I suspect the USB is not working either, because I can't get anything to work trough the USB, and the Internet is not working trough the cable, and I think wireless as well. Her computer is an old acer aspire 3000
View 2 Replies View Relatedi installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been looking around the forums searching for similar problems, it seems not only me had this problem. About a month ago I did a regular update via Upd Manager. The next day - no wired connection.Still managable, since the local library has wireless. Now that won't work either.Just after I upgraded from Jaunty, I accidentally removed NetwMngr from the top right corner of the screen, but that should not have anything to do with how the program works, right? I now cannot reach NM, if I run it from the terminal, nothing happens visibly.

Installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu 10.10 to do dual boot. everything works fine in Windows XP.In Ubuntu 10.10 I had issues connecting to Internet(Through Wirelss), I was able to rectify this issue by dsiable ipv6 from firefox about:config and setting true to network.dns.disableIPv6. After this I was able to connect to internet and browse websites from Firefox.But I am having Issues with Evolution Mail(Connection Timed Out) and Google Talk Client(Connection Timed Out).Empathy Internet Messaging gets connected fine.I was wondering if I will have to disable IPv6 System wide and hence I added the following lines to /etc/sysctl.conf
#disable ipv6
net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1

I have a strange problem for internet. My clients (winxp - S2) can't get internet.Let me explain my scenerios. Fedora 10 with lan (eth0) having direct internet from dsl model, client (XP service pack 2) can use samba shares using dhcp (wlan0) installed in Fedora 10 box. client can ping my linux box.Now problem is: client (dosbox) can ping the google ip address (i.e ping 74.125.39.106) but can't use 'ping www.google.com'. That means ping with ip works for internet from my client. My linux box can. I can use internet from FC10 but can't use iexplorer from my client to have internet. I have enable ipmasquarding in Firewall and dhcpd is running on wlan0 for dynamic ip address of my clients.Can someone suggest me what kind of problem having I? What should i do to success iexplorer for internet? what possibly am i missing?

This laptop is used by my family and my personal laptop is working fine. I took a picture of the screen after install and it shows errors. I need step by step help on this one. I have the picture I took with my camera. It was black with reflections and I use gimp to help it look better. Don't be alarm with the background. The problem is that it is 2420x1044 pixels.
View 6 Replies View RelatedNow, lets make this clear: I am a COMPLETE linux noob. I only installed ubuntu today (dual booting with Windows 7). The thing is, my wireless is working perfectly in windows. However, I can't get it to work in Ubuntu. It detects my internet, but refuses to connect. I'm 100% sure that I have used the right password.I have an Atheros AR5007 wifi adapter. I'm liking the look of Ubuntu, but if I can't solve this it's pretty much useless to me.

I have 2 LAN cards in my computer.
eth0=to router then to internet
eth1=local computers
When I start computer internet is not working, because both lan is active. I tried to disconnecting eth1,then internet works.
eth0=192.168.1.60
eth1=192.168.0.1
I have been looking around and it seems that having a wireless USB network to connect to the internet is difficult on Ubuntu.
All I know is that it seems that my wireless linksys network card is a WUSB600N Anyone that has any commands they want me to put in my terminal I can tell you but from other forums I try to put many in and get no output simply because I believe I do not have the drivers but do not fully know how to even install these drivers in the terminal or am not doing something right.
I can ping my router, i can ping google and i can ping the ip address you get in the ubuntu help.If i type 192.168.1.1 i can get my router control panel/i just cant connect to the web,
View 1 Replies View RelatedOften i have an active connection on the tree network with an internet dongle according networkmanager, but ping is not working and firefox and thunderbird also don't have a connection. Skype however is working at that time. (testcall to skype is working) My present solution is to disconnect and connect a couple of times again until i can ping a commonserver on the internet, and then everything is working normal. Many are stating networkmanager is buggy, is this a known bug and is it worked on or do i need to install another program. Has any of you an idea what could be going on and how to solve it, permanently. In the way it's automatically right when connecting.
My dongle is of type: Huawei E 1550 and often i have a normal connection.
I have the latest Ubuntu (9.10) desktop. My 2 cards are:
WiFi: Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 5100
Ethernet: Marvell Yukon 88E8072 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Is there any way to get drivers working? My hardware switch is on and i have Ubuntu 9.10 running persistently on my usb so i can download the drivers etc. and install them.
I am trying to set up a basic router. I am running ubuntu server 10.04(just installed it today!) I have a verizon aircard(mobile broadband card) that is connected via usb. I am using wvdial to "dial-up" the connection. This works just fine and gives me a device on ppp0. There is a single lan connection on eth0 set up as a static ip address under /etc/network/interfaces. I don't even have any firewall running yet. For whatever reason, I can only get out on the internet when eth0 is set to get its ip address through dhcp. When I set it up with a static ip, I get for example:
$ping 4.2.2.2
From 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable.
$ping google.com
ping: unknown host google.com
If, however, after I have booted and the wvdial has been started, I set up eth0 as dhcp, run /etc/init.d/networking restart, set it back as static, run /etc/init.d/networking restart again, all work well. When I reboot the system with the static ip on eth0, and connect to wvdial, I get no internet again.
