General :: PPPOE Server Access Internet Clients Fail To Access Internet

Aug 26, 2010

I have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server. However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.

On passing the routing command I get
Destination Gateway Iface
196.44.x.y 0.0.0.0 ppp0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 eth2 (my subnet)
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ppp0.

The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?

Fedora Networking :: Firefox Says "Firefox Can't Find The Server?

Sep 8, 2009

This is really odd - all of a sudden, my firefox says "Firefox can't find the server at www.google.com" , and my pidgin will not connect saying host not found. However, I am typing this on the same computer using Opera. his is absolutely insane. I have no idea what caused it.. command line nslookup works great, and resolves everything. But firefox and pidgin will not resolve anything.

The only odd thing is this in messages:
Sep 8 12:07:41 tklaptop NetworkManager: nm_ip4_config_add_nameserver: assertion `nameserver != s' failed
Sep 8 12:07:41 tklaptop NetworkManager: nm_ip4_config_add_nameserver: assertion `nameserver != s' failed

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Access Internet Using Firefox When Wireless

May 3, 2011

I just loaded Ubuntu 11.04 onto Acer Aspire 5100 computer. I can access the internet through Firefox when I connect ethernet lan cable but it doesn't work when I use wireless connection. Although I do get the indicator in top right that says my wireless connection was established. Why I can't access internet with Firefox in wireless mode? I tried toggling the wireless switch in front of Acer but that didn't work.

General :: Cannot Access Internet And Cannot Download Firefox 3.6.12 ?

Dec 15, 2010

I have an acer aspire one notebook (I gather firefox 2 is interwoven on the system?). Anyway, keep pressing firefox icon and it churns over put nothing happens. I found the following advice on another site: (Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to give you as much info for you to help me)

Press Alt+F2 to show the Run program window. Check Run in terminal, leave the input field blank, and click Run to open a terminal. If you're not familiar with the Linux command line just follow the instructions step by step. The easiest way is to simply paste the commands into the terminal with Ctrl+Shift+V. Most of them will only give feedback if an error occurs.

The first command uses wget to download Firefox 3.6 from an official mirror. You can edit the lang variable at the end, in this case en-US, if you'd like another language. All available languages are listed here, just hover over the download link to get the language code from the status bar.

wget -N [url]

The next step extracts the just downloaded file and modifies a link to point to it. In a few cases a connection refused error message may be triggered by sudo, which is not an error but a bug in sudo and can be safely ignored.

The next step links all plug-ins (not to be confused with extensions) to it.

Launch the profile manager using the command below. Create a new profile, name it anything you like and select it. If you want to keep your bookmarks export them via the bookmark manager first. You can then delete the old default profile.

firefox -profilemanager -no-remote

As a bonus you can also change the icon to the official Firefox icon.

Finally reboot the AA1 to make the desktop aware of the new icon and browser location.

However when I try the above I get the following responses at each point:

I do now have a new icon on the desktop! but still no internet.

I am however able to access the internet at work, both use WPA password protection. I was also able to do the updates over wireless at home, despite not being able to access the internet. I am currently at work, and downloaded Google Chrome and did not import settings from Firefox, to see if there were any settings issues with Firefox itself.

Fedora :: Firefox After Autoten Fail - No Internet Access

Jul 3, 2009

I just tried installing Google Earth on my fresh 64 bit Fedora 11 install using autoten, which I used earlier to install java and some codecs. I also used leighs guide to install 64 bit flash and remove nspluginwrapper. All was working fine. Then I decided to use autoten to install googleearth. It failed early giving an error saying:

First error was:
resolving dnmouse.org... failed: Name or service not known.
wget: unable to resolve host address `dnmouse.org'
Error getting repository data for googleearth, repository not found
# checking installation..
Size of report file is 0 lines

Error window opened up saying:
Google earth, was not installed correctly, please check you have an active connection. From this point on, Firefox cannot access the internet. I can ping google.com and dnmouse.com successfully. I did the update that included the new firefox 3.5, so accessing the internet and my connection is active. Konversation is working correctly. Just firefox is having the problem. Message: Firefox can't find the server at start.fedoraproject.org, or google, or redhat etc.
I renamed the .mozilla folder, and restarted firefox, no luck. My /etc/resolve.conf contains the correct nameservers. Also tried a reboot, no luck, still have active eth0 connection but no FF internet access.

Fedora Networking :: F13 - System Updater Can Access Internet - Firefox Can't

Aug 15, 2010

I am coming from Windows XP Pro, on the same machine (and where I am writing this post from) so the internet clearly works on XP. On F13, the eth0 connection is activated and the drivers for the NIC chip were installed with the OS. The NIC is Intel Pro/100 VE. The problem that occurs is that the system updater (in GNOME) can access the internet, and installed a bunch of updates after installing the OS. I know it can get to the internet because the updates worked and in the System Monitor, I can see both uploading and downloading occurring during the updates. Now the problem is that when I open FF, I can't seem to get to pages, and I get the usual FF error (pic -- [URL]). However, I CAN get to [URL] as well as [URL] , but I cannot access several other subdomains on fedoraproject.org . I also cannot get to any other page online, ([URL] for example).

OpenSUSE Network :: Firefox - No Or Extremely Limited Internet Access

Nov 15, 2009

I've been running Suse 11.2 KDE on a 64-bit Dell Studio 1535 since last week's release, and have had no trouble using Firefox. At some point today, however, it stopped accessing webpages -- or, when managing to grab a page, it would do so without full html rendering. 95% of the time I get an error splash, while the other 5% I get some sort of truncated page that looks nothing like it should. Konquer and Opera work fine, as does KMail.

I tried deleting the profile.int file (no luck), then uninstalled/re-installed (no luck), then uninstalled and deleted every Mozilla/Firefox file I could find in order for a fresh install -- but this has not worked after several attempts. I still cannot get Internet access. How to completely wipe-out Firefox in order to allow for a totally new installation?

Ubuntu Servers :: Networking - Machine Refuses To Give Access To The Internet Via Firefox

Sep 21, 2010

I have a machine (lets called it machine 1) with two networks card, eth0 and eth1. Both have static IPs. Once in a while the machine refuses to give access to the Internet via Firefox (eth0 is the route to router). Other machines on the network have no problems accessing the Internet. Eventually the machine would just magically start working again, but this time it just seems to have stayed broken. I've done some simple diagnostics and found:

a) I have another machine running Apache with a Wiki on our network - [URL]. Machine 1 is unable to connect to this Wiki. I get 'the connection has timed out'. I can ping 192.168.1.73 and it responds in the usual fashion.

b) If I try to ping www.google.com it times out with: ping: unknown host www.google.com. I can ping google using its IP address.

c) On machine 1 I have tried traceroute on both www.google.com and its IP and I just get:

1 * * *
2 * * *

And so on until hop 30. Doing this on any other machine on the network works. So while it seems I can ping internally in our network and outside, but when it attempts anything traceroute or URL related it does not work.

General :: Get Internet Access Via Firefox On MachineB By Creating A Series Of SOCKS Proxy Via SSH?

Apr 8, 2010

I've been doing some security testing in a lab environment that does not have direct internet access. From home to connect to my lab machine, I

1. SSH to machineA.
2. SSH from machineA to machineB

where machineB is my actual lab machine. neither machineA or machineB allow anything other than SSH, and machineB is only accessible from machineA. However, I really need to run yum on machineB.I have managed to get internet access via Firefox on machineB by creating a series of SOCKS proxy via SSH.

1. machineB: ssh -L 12345:localhost:12345 user@machineA
2. machineA: ssh -D 12345 user@machineC
3. machineB: configure firefox to use socks proxy, localhost, 12345

where machineC has internet without limits placed. This is the only way I have managed to get internet working. I tried using ssh -L all the way from machineB->machineA->machineC but it didn't work (even when setting Firefox to use http proxy). I tried using ssh -D all the way, but again that doesn't work either. I do have access via Firefox using socks proxy. However, yum update fails to retrieve mirror list, and from what I have found I don't believe yum supports socks proxy directly. Instead, it uses http_proxy / ftp_proxy.how to get yum to go out over the SOCKS proxy I created (same one using in Firefox)? It seems like since Firefox can access the internet and everything without issues, i should be able to get yum to tunnel through the same connection to access everything.... I tried

>export http_proxy="http://localhost:12345"
(yum.conf) proxy="http://localhost:12345"

OpenSUSE Network :: Firefox Can't Find The Server

Mar 1, 2011

I've gotten this in the past with other PCs, but have been able to fix it by deleting my connection in Network Manager and recreating it. I'm using DHCP. This is OpenSUSE 11.3 on a HP Mini-110 Netbook. Here's the weird part, before anyone starts sending me to resolv.conf or asking for "lspci" stuff. When I'm in a terminal on this netbook, I can enter "host google.com" and it works. I can enter, "host download.opensuse.org" and it works fine. I get an IP address. If I manually enter the IP address in Firefox, I go to the site. But if I enter "www.google.com" in Firefox, it very quickly responds with, "Firefox can't find the server at google.com.""Browse Offline" isn't checked. (Think about it: if it was, I couldn't enter the IP address and go to a site, anyway.) This is a brand new install of OS 11.3, Firefox 3.6.6. But one other interesting thing: the software updater reported that common "curl" error, saying that IT couldn't resolve the addresses, either.

Ubuntu Networking :: Get Internet Access To Server?

Jun 19, 2011

I have a server that was set up by a friend so I have a location to save all my documents for work in a RAID array.

It is on a static IP address, I can ping the hub and other computers on the network absolutely fine.

I can't connect to the internet, the router in question is a Netgear CG3101D. Logging into the router I can see that the server is a trusted device and in all the parameters are the same as other computer running Ubuntu Studio.

Does anyone have any tips of how I can find out how to find what is wrong?

It is Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS (Lucid).

Ubuntu :: Can't Access Internet On Server Setup

First off - I'm running 11.04 as a VPS on an OpenVZ.

I've set up a very basic environment of LAMP + mail server. Installing apache, php, mysql and proftpd all went fine, but whenever I install iRedMail (which is postfix + dovecot + clamav and few more packages) I lose the internet connection.

Although the server is easily reachable by ssh and http, I can't connect anywhere from the server. At first I thought it only had issues with resolving domain names, but now I see it doesn't even ping IPs as well.

# ifconfig

Networking :: Ubuntu Server Can't Access Internet ?

Jan 2, 2011

I'm setting up an old box as a dedicated file-sharing server on the LAN as well as an internet web server for my personal web site but I have no network connection. My computer is connected to a router which is connected to my DSL modem. The router has the Ubuntu box's MAC address as well as a Win7 box, which connects to the internet fine.

Here is what I've tried:

1. Check routing table

Code:

2. Try to add a default gateway to the internet on eth2, this happens:

Code:

3. I edited resolv.conf, which was empty, adding:

4. I edited /etc/network/interfaces as follows:

Code:

Then I type the following:

Code:

And it keeps doing this endlessly because it's not finding the DHCP server, presumably...? This didn't solve the problem and so I attempted another configuration:

Code:

Still, not internet connection and no ability to apt-get anything (says packages not found)

So, this didn't work either. What I've tried should work, especially the route command. Now why won't it work?

Ubuntu :: No Internet Access After Installing GUI On Server

I was having a hard time configuring ubuntu server with command line so this is the steps I did to install the GUI;

Code:

then

Code:

then

Code:

The GUI started up fine and I logged in as root, then I tried Update Manager and received this error message:

Requires installation of untrusted packages

I tried this in terminal window

Code:

and got

W: Failed to fetch [url]........(-5 - No address associated with hostname

So I did System Testing and got the result that my network was fine but my internet failed!

I could do command line update no problem before installing GUI. I can see it on the network on another computer though.

Trying to setup without the GUI is starting to look easier than with.

The only thing I did between working & not working was to install
Nvidia Cuda driver for my GTX275

My guess is something in the firewall got tweaked. but I've compared it to 2 working boxes & nothing jumps out at me.
