Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Not Working With WPA?
Sep 1, 2010
For some reason my Ubuntu computer will not connect to the internet when the router uses WPA but is fine with WEP the sooner this is fixed the better because my ubuntu computer is down until this is solved . But I know the Ubuntu community and I am sure we will resolve this in no time.

I am trying to connect my desktop to my laptop over a non-internet connected LAN, but when i enable the LAN connection on my desktop (the one with the wireless) its internet stops working.
it is a very similar problem to this except that i am using ubuntu for the machine with the two connections.
right now i have my wireless on the 192.168.1.* address space, while the LAN is to be on 192.168.5.*
note: my goal is not to share internet with my laptop, just be able to connect to it and the internet at the same time.
desktop: ubuntu 9.10 , wireless and LAN
laptop: windows xp, LAN only

I have been looking around the forums searching for similar problems, it seems not only me had this problem. About a month ago I did a regular update via Upd Manager. The next day - no wired connection.Still managable, since the local library has wireless. Now that won't work either.Just after I upgraded from Jaunty, I accidentally removed NetwMngr from the top right corner of the screen, but that should not have anything to do with how the program works, right? I now cannot reach NM, if I run it from the terminal, nothing happens visibly.

I have a Dell Latitude D530 Laptop (500 GB HDD). Installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu 10.10 to do dual boot. everything works fine in Windows XP.In Ubuntu 10.10 I had issues connecting to Internet(Through Wirelss), I was able to rectify this issue by dsiable ipv6 from firefox about:config and setting true to network.dns.disableIPv6. After this I was able to connect to internet and browse websites from Firefox. But I am having Issues with Evolution Mail(Connection Timed Out) and Google Talk Client(Connection Timed Out).Empathy Internet Messaging gets connected fine.I was wondering if I will have to disable IPv6 System wide and hence I added the following lines to /etc/sysctl.conf
#disable ipv6
net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1
[code]....

I have a strange problem for internet. My clients (winxp - S2) can't get internet.Let me explain my scenerios. Fedora 10 with lan (eth0) having direct internet from dsl model, client (XP service pack 2) can use samba shares using dhcp (wlan0) installed in Fedora 10 box. client can ping my linux box.Now problem is: client (dosbox) can ping the google ip address (i.e ping 74.125.39.106) but can't use 'ping www.google.com'. That means ping with ip works for internet from my client. My linux box can. I can use internet from FC10 but can't use iexplorer from my client to have internet. I have enable ipmasquarding in Firewall and dhcpd is running on wlan0 for dynamic ip address of my clients. Can someone suggest me what kind of problem having I? What should i do to success iexplorer for internet? what possibly am i missing?

Often i have an active connection on the tree network with an internet dongle according networkmanager, but ping is not working and firefox and thunderbird also don't have a connection. Skype however is working at that time. (testcall to skype is working) My present solution is to disconnect and connect a couple of times again until i can ping a commonserver on the internet, and then everything is working normal. Many are stating networkmanager is buggy, is this a known bug and is it worked on or do i need to install another program. Has any of you an idea what could be going on and how to solve it, permanently. In the way it's automatically right when connecting.
My dongle is of type: Huawei E 1550 and often i have a normal connection.

I am trying to set up a basic router. I am running ubuntu server 10.04(just installed it today!) I have a verizon aircard(mobile broadband card) that is connected via usb. I am using wvdial to "dial-up" the connection. This works just fine and gives me a device on ppp0. There is a single lan connection on eth0 set up as a static ip address under /etc/network/interfaces. I don't even have any firewall running yet. For whatever reason, I can only get out on the internet when eth0 is set to get its ip address through dhcp. When I set it up with a static ip, I get for example:
$ping 4.2.2.2
From 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable.
$ping google.com
ping: unknown host google.com
If, however, after I have booted and the wvdial has been started, I set up eth0 as dhcp, run /etc/init.d/networking restart, set it back as static, run /etc/init.d/networking restart again, all work well. When I reboot the system with the static ip on eth0, and connect to wvdial, I get no internet again.

I recently did a fresh install of 10.04 from 9.04 and since then I am unable to use Internet. However my ethernet connection is working fine, as I am able to login to modem and check configuration. I reinstalled twice, downloaded fresh 64-bit & 32-bit and also followed kernel update steps as in few forum posts, but no joy. The firefox is throwing an error "The connection has timed out". My internet connection is working fine as I am able to use my Windows Laptop to post this message. I checked system > administration > hardware drivers and couldn't find any unsupported hardwares.I had similar issue when upgrading to 9.10, hence stayed on 9.04. When I looked at LTS image, I couldn't resist and cleaned up 9.04.

My internet works fine if I plug directly into the modem, but if I go through the router either using ethernet or wireless it doesn't work. I can access the router perfectly when using wireless and change settings and all that but cant access the internet. From what I've read it isn't a DNS issue because I cant get a result from pinging an ip, so I think it may be something firewall related but I'm unsure.

I've just installed ubuntu for the first time (latest version) on an HP laptop alongside windows vista and the Internet is not working at all.wired nor wireless. I connect through a router.
The menu options are greyed out for wireless and wired. I'm writing this from my iPad which is happily connected, as does the computer via the windows session so the problem is def not the internet connection. I really don't know where to start.

I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu machine. I would like to try it out for a few weeks at least, but networking is not working at all.
I somehow managed to find the network settings and it shows no connections, wired or wireless. When I log out and log back in with gnome, my wireless gets connected automatically.

I recently installed Ubuntu. I just installed ndiswrapper so I could install my wireless PCI [COLOR=blue ! important][COLOR=blue ! important]card [COLOR=blue ! important]drivers[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR]
I did that and it is recognized and so is the network I want to connect to. But for some reason, it just wont connect. It will spend a long time trying to connect, but then just says "disconnected". It's not like I have a bad connection or anything. My internet on Windows is fast.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 into my compaq notebook. The problem is that I am not able to connect to my wired broadband internet.
Here are the details of my attempts so far:
1)"ifconfig -a" gave 2 devices eth0 and wlan0.
2)"pppoeconf" was unable to detect any ethernet cards.
3)Each time I plug in the LAN cable , the network icon would say "connecting" and ultimately result in "disconnected. Now in offline mode".My ethernet device is Realtek PCIe RT8101E/RTL102E (rev 02).
I also tried to install the realtek driver though I was not confident whether I did it correct.

so i had Jaunty installed last week with no problem. But then i decided to install winxp, erasing it. I hated it, and reinstalled ubuntu, this time lucid. However, the internet has stopped working properly. I've tried wireless and wired connections and they either dont work or will load half a web page after a few minutes. A good deal of the time the browser will time out or fail to find server. The ethernet is working, so I'm assuming the issue is with a missing driver or the such. I have 10.04 32bit installed on Gateway MD2614u laptop.

I'm using a WUSB54GC network adapter to connect to my home wireless network. My network was not visible, so I added it and it shows connected, but when I launch the browser, I can't get a connection. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4. All other computers on the network connect fine and I disabled my firewall to see if that made a difference.

I'm running Windows 7 and Xubuntu 10.10 on a dell pc. My wireless works fine when I run windows 7, but on Xubuntu, the wireless doesn't even come as an option. When I try to plug in the wired connection, it loads for about a minute then tells me I'm disconnect. The option for the wired connection is there, but when I try to click it, the same thing happens. What do I do?

I had shut down my laptop at work last week and when I booted it up the wired internet connect was not working. The wireless connection is working (I'm typing now via wireless).I have WinXP Pro on this machine (but I've never used it--I'm all Linux now). So I booted into WinXP and turned off the wireless and got internet connection through the ethernet cable, so it doesn't seem to be the cable or my ethernet card. Here is the output of "ifconfig"
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1c:25:7a:fa:b6
inet addr:xxx.xxx.xxx.xx Bcast:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Mask:255.255.255.0

Working with a Dell Inspiron 6000 and installed Ubuntu 10.10 just to get familiar with some form of Linux. The wireless card is Dell's 1470 and the chip on the card is labelled BCM4311 so that's what I went for. At first it showed an unconnected wired NIC and for wireless it said "no firmware", but now it doesn't say anything about either one of them, it says "no network devices available". I followed the instructions here [URL] for both "STA - No Internet Access" and "b43 - No Internet Access" and when it says to go to the additional drivers menu to enable the new driver, there's nothing on the list. I then tried [URL] that guide and [URL] that one. Don't say things like "just run a qf13 on the PCL so the ergotron bus will be cleared, it's probably a thermawhatsit in conflict with the meatloaf kernel" as I won't have a clue how to execute said instruction. More useful would be "open a terminal and type 'ireallyenjoynewcarpetting' then check if the output says 'blargh 010101' ".
