Hardware :: T61P / Fedora 12 64-bit / External Audio Jack Not Working

Jan 18, 2010

I have used Linux off & on over the past 8-10 years, and last fall went full hog (no windows partition left!) on my IBM/Lenovo T61P (model 6457-B51) and am currently running Fedora 12 64-bit. It's been SOLID since last October. I did bail to the NVIDIA driver and the video performance is fantastic as well for my work usage of this system.

I have sound through the internal speakers and also through USB headsets, so it appears that pulseaudio, hated as it is, is working fine on this hardware. However, I CANNOT get any sound through the speaker jack! I get a hum anytime I attempt to use speakers connected to that jack - I have not tried a microphone on the mic jack, so I cannot speak to whether that works or not. This came to a head when I tried to play an audio file during a class and could not get the sound into the room speakers.

It's just odd that the OS is not able to talk to this port - this did work under Windows prior to my switch.

Worst case I guess I can find some USB speakers to use, but it would be handier to just plug into my guitar amp when I want some volume at home, and to be able to use other hardware as what happened last fall.

/sbin/lspci:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Using External MIDI Device To Control Jack Transport

Oct 16, 2010

I'm new to ubuntu but i do have a basic understanding of programming, but nothing too serious. The reason I am mentioning this is because I have a little project. Currently I use JACK to control the transport of all the aps i use to make music with ardour, hydrogen and rosegarden mainly. I also have an external midi drum machine that I sometimes hook up into the mix via midi in/out, my drum machine (yamaha ry to be exact can send and receive midi data. My question is can I use the transport controls on my external drum machine to control JACK's transport controls? If there is already am app that does something like that, excellent!

Ubuntu Multimedia :: JACK Not Working 10.4?

I had Ubuntu 10.4 installed and JACK was working excellent. I noticed that gnome was a little more than what I needed so I installed the xubuntu-desktop package. After that install JACK no longer works... I run the command jackd -d alsa and I get a bus error. I did a new install from an xubuntu iso and same error.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Jack Detection Not Working - Toshiba T135D

Mar 15, 2010

I bought a Toshiba T135D-S1324 two days ago, and the only thing I can't get to work is for the internal speakers to automatically mute when headphones are plugged in. (Ubuntu 9.10 for AMD64 by the way.)

I have tried to add "options snd-hda-intel model=laptop probe_mask=1" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf but that didn't work.

The jack detection box is not available under sound preferences. Alsamixer only shows PCM and Master.

"sudo cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec" shows "Codec: Conexant ID 5066"

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Headphone Jack And Internal Mic Not Working

Apr 7, 2011

Just curious if someone could help me with my issue, I've noticed that my internal mic doesn't work, and when I plug in headphones it stops the use of the speakers but I hear nothing through the headphones. I'm running openSUSE 11.3 and have had almost no major problems until this. I've searched around and asked a couple friends and have made absolutely no progress.

Debian Multimedia :: Squeeze And Alsa Not Working With Rear Jack Speakers?

May 24, 2010

I'm at the tail end of my upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and I think this sound issue is the last one I have.
As usual I've tried hunting for some answers but it gets very confusing when people are using KDE or PulseAudio or Ubuntu or slightly different configuration to what I have.

My config:
Debian Squeeze 2.6.32
Alsa (just because I was using that in Lenny and it was working, no other reason)
Gnome
Rhythmbox
Skype

Skype is pretty good - it has the sound configuration built in, so I say ring the speakers and it does. I say talk to the headset and it does. Rhythmbox is my music player (again just because I was using it under Lenny) however it only wants to play through the headset. I can't seem to get it to play to the speakers attached to the rear port.

Summary of some settings (transposed manually)
# aplay -l

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Jack And "Muse Failed To Find A Jack Audio Server"

Jun 27, 2011

I've got an Acer Aspire 5101 with Natty on it and everything works so far, but I can't start Muse. It says: "Muse failed to find a jack audio server". At the bottom it also says: "...if Jack was started check if it was started as the same user as Muse". This might be the issue. But how can I check this? BTW: Jackd has been installed and I am a Member of the Audio Group.

I am new to Ubuntu and don't know how to fix this. I got this Notebook for free, because my Brother wanted to dispose it as it didn't worked properly after he reinstalled xp. Only the dvd-drive is broken, the rest is in really good condition for such an old thing. After a lot of trial and error I could finally install Natty from USB.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: External Webcam Is Not Working

Jan 17, 2011

I just recently purchased a GTMax Flexible 12 Mega Pixel High Resolution w/ 4 LED Light & Microphone USB PC Webcam - Black from amazon.com, and attempted to use it in Ubuntu 8.10, but can't get it to work. The LEDs come on when I plug it into my laptop's usb port, but no video. I've tested it with Cheese Webcam Booth, and also an external website, but it doesn't work.Of course, though, I'm not entirely sure its really the webcam, since Cheese Webcam Booth seems to be turning on my built-in laptop webcam which might be interfering with it, and also the tokbox widget in the website doesn't completely load anyway in ubuntu, webcam or no, so I'm thinking that maybe its only Cheese and tokbox which are not working.

My OS is Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit. Cheese Webcam Booth also does not work with my interal cam, though it turns it on, and I've confirmed it (i.e. cheese + internal webcam) does work in my ubuntu 9.10 32 bit which is installed in a multiboot on the same computer.

I would like to get these problems resolved, ASAP, as I need to have my webcam (at least one of them, preferably both) working in ubuntu 8.10, for that's the OS I use the most often.I will note that my laptop is a Dell Studio 1535, and since I've installed Ubuntu 8.10 on it, I've had a number of other hardware issues with it on ubuntu, but I've been able to get most of them resolved a long time ago, but the webcam thing is one that I haven't got to work since I first installed ubuntu (which was God knows how long ago).

Debian Multimedia :: NVidia Driver Not Working With External Monitor?

Mar 15, 2010

I have a Dell XPS M1330, which has a GeForce 8400M GS GPU. The binary (sigh) nVidia driver installed is version 190.53 (installed by sgfxi). This is working well: glxgears gives me about 2600 FPS and compiz is happy. An old Philips 170B is attached by VGA cable. I was looking to set up a method of switching resolution upon connecting to the monitor when working at the desk, since I don't like the 1280x800 resolution of the laptop.

nfortunately, I can't get any output on the external monitor. It does work under Ubuntu, which installed the 180 series binary driver. (Going to an earlier driver is an option, but I want to understand the problem.) Bottom line, I want to work under Debian. As far as I know, nVidia's proprietary driver doesn't support xrandr. At any rate, with he external 170B monitor attached and turned on, I get the following:$ xrandr -qScreen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 800default connected 1280x800+0+0 0mm x 0mm

Ubuntu :: Headphone Jack Not Working?

Jun 30, 2011

EDIT: here is the alsa info script output...

Ubuntu :: Asus G60 Headphone Jack Not Working?

Nov 16, 2010

I have an Asus G60vx notebook and when I updated to 10.10 I lost audio through my headphones. The speakers work fine, just not the headphones. Normally I am able to sole these things on my own through searching forums and what not, but no solutions I have found work for me so far. Things I have tried:

1. Make sure the latest drivers are installed according to the above, then edit the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add the following line:

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-laptop

Reboot and test. Other models to test are:

thinkpad
ideapad
hp_laptop
dell-vostro
olpc-xo-1_5

2. Checking on the alsamixer thru the terminal. Headphones is green, but there is only the 00 notch, like there is no volume to change.
3. Updating my alsa files via synaptics, my kernel model is 2.6.35-23-generic. There is no alsa drivers for this kernel that I can find yet, however I found this, Ubuntu supplied Linux modules for version 2.6.35 ALSA snapshots. Installed it still doesnt work.

Ubuntu :: Audio Inputs And Jack-sense Cease To Working After A While?

Oct 19, 2010

both audio inputs (I use the integrated mic on my notebook) and jack-sense (integrated speakers/headphones) work properly, as they should. But after some time (from few minutes up to several hours) both of them cease to work simultaneously. After that the mic input levels turning gray and speakers don't work at all (when headphones were connected at that moment) or speakers don't mute when I connect my headphones (if headphones were not connected then). After I reboot, everything is okay again for some time, but then it happens again. Setting mixer levels manually with alsamixer doesn't help at all. I also tried different snd-hda-intel model settings in alsa.conf, but that just made things messed up, so I stayed with auto setting. This way everything (inputs/outputs/sense) works as should until it simply stops working.

It's maverick, ALC268, ATI Azalia (Intel HDA), alsa 1.0.23, but I had this problem with karmic and lucid as well when I tried them. Now I want to switch from Win7, but this is the only thing keeping me from it.

Ubuntu :: Couldn't Get Line-in Audio Jack Working To Save Life

Jan 26, 2010

I actually pretty much abandoned Ubuntu a few weeks back after several weeks of not getting a couple things working properly. One of the big problems is I couldn't get my line-in audio jack working to save my life (despite working flawlessly in Windows on the same machine).I have posted about this numerous times and had no luck despite many of you good people attempting to assist.Tonight, I put a live CD of Linux Mint in my machine and noticed a few of the little problems I have with Ubuntu seemed to be "fixed" with Linux Mint.

That's when it hit me that perhaps the big difference is 32 vs. 64 bit? My Ubuntu is 64 bit but the Linux Mint I tested is 32. Does anybody think that my audio problem could be as simple as getting away from Ubuntu 64 bit? Also, can anybody tell me if there is a Terminal Services Client available for Mint? I'm sure there is but it didn't seem to be in the default install..
