General :: How To Get Device Of Corrupted USB Stick

Aug 7, 2011

In order to try to rescue a USB stick which has probably a corrupted allocation table, I would like to get the device.I'm using Ubuntu 10 as a guest in VirtualBox, Host: Win7. Windows just tells me that the USB is not formatted. When tail -f /var/log/messages and I insert the USB stick, there won't be anything appended.
fdisk -l does not show anything.

Ubuntu :: Persistant Storage Usb Stick Corrupted - Files Back ?

May 20, 2011

I had a usb stick running ubuntu. A coworker used this install to go around some of my companies security measures, and I was told to hold on to the usb stick in question. I copied all the files onto another usb stick in case something went wrong with the first one.

The problem: The first usb stick that was bootable has become corrupted. I still have the files from the disc, but they're not on the bootable stick.

Can i just use something like unetbootin, reinstall ubuntu, then drag all the files over?

OpenSUSE :: Device Notifier Fails With USB Stick?

Sep 6, 2011

OpenSuse 11.4 32bit KDE 4.6.0

When I plug in my 8 GB SanDisk Cruzer USB stick into my desktop box, the KDE Device Notifier fails to recognize it. It will recognize every other USB stick. "fsck" reports no errors. I can mount it manually. I can read and write to it. The Device Notifier on my netbook recognizes it. So does another desktop box. By the way this started recently so I suspect some software update.

Software :: Amount Of Data Passed Through A USB Device (from USB Stick)?

Aug 17, 2010

I have a probably kind of unusual problem - when a USB stick is connected to the PC and data is copied from/to that stick, I need to know how much data has been copied. The data itself if not interesting, just how many bytes. I unfortunately don't have access to the program that does the copying, and most of the data doesn't end up on any drive (it just gets read and discarded), so I can't simply check the size of a target directory or something like that. I have had a look at usbmon, but that seems to produce way too much data - the normal case would be around 10 gig of data being read, and I can't have that blown up by a factor of 10 and lying around on the hard drive

Ubuntu Installation :: From A USB Flash Memory Stick - Warning "VFS: Cannot Open Root Device "sda6" Or Unknown-block(0,0)" And Kernel Panic On First Boot

Apr 24, 2011

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB flash memory stick. It works fine until around 95%, where I get the following warning/error:

[Code]....

I click OK and the installer seems to finish nicely, except the terminal throws several errors along these lines (see photo):

[Code]....

I tried also with 10.04 LTS, the difference being that the install warning appears two or three times instead of once. Some results from googling (Ubuntu Forums, Ubiquity bug) suggest unchecking the initial update options. I am going to try this but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the boot loader right (there seemed to be problems with this).

General :: Windows 7 - HP Laptop, Corrupted Graphics, Not Booting Win System Board?

Aug 3, 2010

My friend has a HP Pavilion dv2699ea (dv2500 series - somehow *shrugs*) that has stopped working. It's a Core2Duo laptop with a Nvidia GPU. The unit is no longer under warranty. Problems first started a few days ago with the laptop showing corrupted graphics in Windows and BSOD'ing after a few minutes of use. I tried booting to an Ubuntu LiveCD which worked for a while before succuming and crashing as well. The freezing/graphics corruption/BSODing does seem somewhat heat related (CPU runs at ~95'c under load) however I believe that if it is heat related, then it's already damaged components inside.

Now the system has corrupted graphics on bootup[1], including booting Ubuntu[2], and neither operating systems will boot at all (Windows can sometimes get logged in before showing a black screen and becoming unresponsive. Ubuntu just looks like [3] after X starts). (See comment below for links.)

The fact the problem occurs both under Linux and Windows says to me this is not a driver issue. I have run Memtest which passed fine and none of this seems HDD related as I managed to get ~30GB of data off the system before it finally gave up the ghost.

She has been using it repeatedly without giving it adequate ventilation for years (i.e. on the bed, or on a pillow), so it's my opinion that the system board has probably warped over years of cooling/heating and that's causing this current problem. If that is the case, then I can buy a replacement system board and fit it myself, saving about £200 over the cost of an out-of-warranty HP repair. Of course, I don't want to make her spend £100 on a replacement part for it to be the wrong thing, hence asking for a second opinion here!

Hopefully I've covered all the bases here. I'm a former IT support guy myself, so I've tried all the dumb stuff (driver updates, examining memory dumps from BSODs [one 'unrecoverable hardware error', three relating to the graphics card], etc).

General :: Can't Find Boot Device - Error "Unable To Determine Major/minor Number Of Root Device"

Mar 17, 2011

I just compiled my first own kernel (I'm using Arch Linux), following the tutorial on the german site. # /etc/fstab: static file system information.

# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

General :: MySql Database From Usb Stick

Jul 30, 2011

I recently installed a portable WAMP server on my usb stick. Really nice, I can do some php programming on my girlfriend's windows7 laptop without installing anything on it.I also have a LAMP environnement on my linux computer. When I plug my usb stick on my linux box, I can easily mount -o bind /usbstick/wwwfolder ~/public_html and work on my php script from there.

But my question is, is there a way I could get the database from my usb stick's MySql server, to run on my linux MySql server? So I can modify data base schema from my Linux workstation, doing some INSERTS in some tables, and then plub my usb stick on the laptop and get my up-to-date database running from the portable environnement?I don't know where / how MySql stores its databases. Basically, I want to "mount" the database from the usb stick in my Linux' installed MySql server, without extracting and importing the data, so there is just ONE database used for BOTH environnement.

General :: Formatting A USB Memory Stick?

Apr 30, 2010

I have a 4 Gb memory stick which used to have OpenSuse on it but I don't use OpenSuse and wanted to use the stick for something else - for backing up my Mozilla Thunderbird installation. I thought that by re-formatting the stick, using a file obtainable from the HP web site, in connection with installing Linux on a memory stick, that it would leave me with an empty one but it hasn't; there is still a lot of OpenSuse stuff on it. How can I "empty" it so that I can use it to transfer my Ubuntu Thunderbird to another computer which is also running Ubuntu. I was going to open a terminal and type:

sudo cp -avr /home/chris/.thunderbird/ /media/disk

I have already tried this but it didn't appear to work, so is this not the right way to go about it?
