OpenSuse 11.4 32bit KDE 4.6.0
When I plug in my 8 GB SanDisk Cruzer USB stick into my desktop box, the KDE Device Notifier fails to recognize it. It will recognize every other USB stick. "fsck" reports no errors. I can mount it manually. I can read and write to it. The Device Notifier on my netbook recognizes it. So does another desktop box. By the way this started recently so I suspect some software update.
I'm using OpenSuse 11.4 (x86_64) with KDE 4.
It's not possible to mount external USB (ntfs) disks with a non-root user using the Device Notifier or Dolphin. The error is:
Could not mount the following device: MyBook 2
org.freedesktop.UDisks.Error.PermissionDenied: Authentication is required
It is a permission problem; running Dolphin under root and clicking the USB disk mounts it without problems. The same should be possible to an ordinary user. The Update Applet does not work for the same reason (I can only install updates using yast).
Of course, I googled the error and there were a number of possible solutions, which I all tried. That includes allowing the action in the policy and adding the user in AdminIdentities local-authority. The file /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy contains "yes" for every option. Needless to say it doesn't make sense and I'm out of options.
Automount of external NTFS USB drive fails when using the Device Notifier. The automount facility failed after the last kernel update. A bug report was kindly filed by @saverios. The details are in the quote at the end of this notice. Pending resolution of the bug, we recommend that you install the following workaround: Open the file /etc/filesystems and add an entry for "ntfs" so the file looks similar to this (see last entry):

I installed openSUSE 11.3 with KDE4 on three different computers. Only one of them has the following problem: When I use my Sandisk Cruzer USB-stick (FAT32 formatted), copying is extremely slow. Also, the taskbarpanel notifier does not show a progressbar or a cancel button during copying. It only shows that is copying but I can not cancel. On the other two computers, the same stick works ok. The computer has the following mainboard: Asus M4A87TD/USB3
View 1 Replies View RelatedI did a fresh install of 11.2 (giving OpenSUSE a try after being on Ubuntu for years). I then enabled the community and packman repos. Now, I have noticed that the eject button that normally appears on the Device Notifier plasmoid is gone. I can still click on where that button should be and the device (CD in this case) will still eject. It's just that the button is "invisible."
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm running suse 11.4 on my laptop, everything was ok, this morning, I've attached two or three usb flashes to my laptop and mounted them by device notifer but after an hour, I've attached another usb flash and device notifer stopped working for any usb device or cd/dvd rom actions... (I mean that it doesnt shows ant action, completely emotionless! ) all of them are mountable by command line.
and after that my dolphin places, doesent shows removeable devices and other partitions enymore (so i couldnt mount any partion using gui)
I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 yesterday, using a 64-bit Dell 1535 laptop.
With the new version, I find that the Device Notifier no longer detects my mp3 player through any of the USB ports. Neither does Dolphin.
Similar threads that I've read through have not done the trick.
kde 4.3.4 kernel 2.6.32.7-smp Have Seagate 500GB (fuseblk) external usb drive that gets listed in the "Devices recently plugged in, pop-up panel" but a Verbatim 1.5TB does not. I have to mount it manually as ntfs volume.

When I boot using the Mint distro on same PC both ext usb drives are automounted. Looking for pointers as to why the 1.5TB verbatim disk does not automount.
After an update today, nothing I plug into USB triggers the notifier to ask me what to do. I see the devices in dmesg

In order to try to rescue a USB stick which has probably a corrupted allocation table, I would like to get the device.I'm using Ubuntu 10 as a guest in VirtualBox, Host: Win7. Windows just tells me that the USB is not formatted.When tail -f /var/log/messages and I insert the USB stick, there won't be anything appended.
fdisk -l does not show anything.
I am trying to boot Fedora15 using a USB stick. It fails to boot properly It works fine when I boot Fedora 14 using the same usb stick. I've attached some screenshots. Trying to run it on a Lenovo T500 2081CTO with an ATI graphics card.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem booting anything from USB stick on my IBM Thinkpad T42. It used to run normally, I could even install Windows or Linux from it, but now it stopped working. This particular concern is about booting freshly installed Xubuntu version 9.04 off a Kingston 4GB flash stick. I've installed Xubuntu using usb-create program directly from a booted live cd. Installation went fine and all the options in BIOS are setup correctly (I think). In boot menu in BIOS the stick is recognized correctly and + appears in front of it. Stick is selected as primary boot device. BIOS usb support is also enabled.
Now when I power on the computer, it reads something from the stick and stops right after displaying:
SYSLINUX 3.63 Debian-2008=07=15 EBIOS ... etc...
Then nothing happens and the text stays on like this.
How do I find the device that a usb stick is tied to (eg. /dev/sdc)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a probably kind of unusual problem - when a USB stick is connected to the PC and data is copied from/to that stick, I need to know how much data has been copied. The data itself if not interesting, just how many bytes. I unfortunately don't have access to the program that does the copying, and most of the data doesn't end up on any drive (it just gets read and discarded), so I can't simply check the size of a target directory or something like that. I have had a look at usbmon, but that seems to produce way too much data - the normal case would be around 10 gig of data being read, and I can't have that blown up by a factor of 10 and lying around on the hard drive

The Eee can use an external optical drive as well but that failed also. I'm sure I need to do more to prepare the USB drive or CD? Can I prepare the USB Drive or CD on my Windows system, and make it boot on the netbook (which has another Linux distro on it now)?

I have mplayer installed (which I compiled from source with --enable-vdpau). I try to run mplayer with this command:

Before doing all this, I was able to get the nvidia 195.36.24 driver installed, but I am still having some trouble, which may or may not be related.
My son's netbook with 10.10 netbook remix failed to boot. Using the Live install CD and Gparted I couldn't repair the EXT4 filesytem. The error reported was:
e2fsck : Device or resource busy while trying to open ...
After trying many solutions and web searching I decided to try a different live CD and tried Knoppix 6.4.4
Using the command interface I typed e2fsck -v -f -y /dev/xxxx (xxxx = your device). This worked first time and the machine rebooted without hesitation.
I eventually gave up and migrated to mdadm. Works just fine. Having upgraded to jessie and solved one problem

I find the next one. When I boot into jessie my RAID device (just a data partition not /) is not found causing the boot to fail as per problems reported here

After booting I can mount my RAID device but if it's in the fstab when booting it fails. Also, I notice that some of my lvm device names have changed. After a bit of hunting around I found a couple of solutions pointing to running dmraid as a service during boot and changing the entry for the RAID device in fstab to use the UUID.

This seems to work. However this seems to be a workaround and as the lvm device paths for my / and /usr partitions have also changed, I'm wondering if there is a bug here as mentioned in the second link?
The / and /usr paths changed to /dev/dm-2 and /dev/dm-3 from the /dev/mapper/ form.
I've installed squeeze and wheezy on an old Toshiba Satellite 210 CS laptop with 48MB RAM and a 20GB IDE harddrive.Grub2 won't boot at all and stops with a "error: cannot allocate real mode pages". The solution to that is to use the grub-legacy package.The boot then fails with "waiting for root device" and drops to an initramfs shell.

It runs on a fakeraid pair of SSD's of 60 GB each (actually a single Revodrive device, but it shows up as two devices). When Ubuntu 10.10 boots, I'm dropped to a shell.During boot, when I removed "silent splash" from the kernel's command line, I got these messages:

After installing this, the problem was solved!! This is strange since I don't recall uninstalling this package or changing anything important, for that matter (perhaps did apt-get upgrade, but that's about it!). [URL]
The server comes up after rebooting and after setting the hostname it starts setting up logical volume management. It says that 2 logical volume(s) in volume group "VolGroupOO" now active But then it starts to check the file system and errors with fsck.ext3: Device or resource busy while trying to open /dev/sdb1 [failed]

After I log in with the root I get the message mesg: error tty device is not owned by group 'tty' Can the forum tell me how to troubleshoot this issue so I can boot back up again? I have 2 harddrives in this server and only 1 drive was detected when I first installed CentOS. The error first appeared when I mounted the 2nd drive at the mount point /UserGeneratedData. drive was formatted with ext3 before mounting and did not have any data on it I don't want any software RAID if thats what seems to be going on with "VolGroup00"
As per [URL] I built a RAID6 array. yay. In the end it completed.

We have a SuSE/SLES 9 server that boots from a fibre channel card, using volumes from a NetApp filer.
We previously had the server booting from the LUNs on the filer, but after some tinkering around with the fibre channel BIOS, we have the situation where the LUNS seem to be mounted, the OS boots, starts to initialise everything but then stalls, saying:
We have tried loads of combinations of settings in the BIOS and fibre channel BIOS without any success or any idea what may have caused the error.
i was writing a .img file to my usb stick with ImageWriter, but it didn't seem to do anything so i clicked the close gtk button and pulled the stick out of my pc. now my pc gives my an when i try to open the stick. is there any way to fix this. I can use win xp pro, win xp media center, win 7 starter, ubuntu 9.10 and ubuntu 10.04

I have no optical device to install Ubuntu from and would like to install Ubuntu Server to a USB stick.
