I'm stuck in Memtest86, everytime i boot it gives me an option to go into BIOS, and then it says "Loading GRUB." After that it automaticly goes into memtest, and I've let it finish numerous times without giving me errors. I've installed Linux Mint 8 via Unetbootin, I have a nearly fresh install of windows 7 on my laptop.

both are Maxtors with ext4 fs. primary is 20 gb and secondary 80 gb.
Jumpers are set to cable select.
Boot order in bios is correct. (primary first, secondary isn't in the list at all)
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 (dual-boot with Win 7) and at first the bootloader was working fine; I even installed BURG (although I installed it on hd0 because I don't know how to find out where the MBR is installed...) but it worked fine when I restarted my computer several times. However, when I booted into Windows 7 and then restarted for the first time since installing BURG, I am stuck with the "GRUB loading" screen at startup, and can't get into any OS. I will try using the Live CD, but I'm wondering if the problem was because I installed BURG in the wrong drive? How do I figure out where the MBR is, and how do I fix this with the Live CD?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my 9.10 Ubuntu install last night using the Update Manager, everything downloaded fine, and appeared to install correctly. When it finished I got the message advising that my machine needed to reboot for changes to take effect. I checked my mail quickly before rebooting, and then let it do its thing. It shut down fine, then booted up and went into MemTest86. No real worries, so I wandered off expecting it to take 10-20 minutes. After 4 hours, though, I was starting to worry. A message at the bottom of the screen advised something along the lines that the test had been successful, and I could press Escape to exit.
I did, and my machine rebooted, and went back into MemTest86. I just figured I was being too impatient and left the test running all night. My machine has now been running MemTest86 for 16 hours, and while the timer is still running and the tests refreshing, my keyboard is not responding.
I upgraded to fc13 from fc12 recently. After the upgrade the virtual machine boot is stuck in grub loading stage 2. I have attached a screen shot of the picture for reference.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI been running both OS's for a few months now with no major problems besides wireless internet issues. Today, however, as I go to boot my laptop up, the Dell logo loads with the F2 and F12 boot and setup options which both work. Directly after that though I get the message "GRUB loading. Symbol '?' not found. Aborted. Press any key to Exit." then it repeats when I push a key, and then it tells me to press F1 to retry, F2 to go to setup, or F5 to run diagnostics. It passes all the tests in diagnostics. I've tried booting off of the ubuntu cd I used to load it initially with no luck. So I'm stuck at either that error message or in setup but I can't go any further, and it does not change anything when I tried to boot from the cd.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm using ubuntu 9. For some weird reason, sometimes when i log in only the ubuntu logo shows up. It says "Grub loading" and then the logo appears, but the harddrive isn't accessed. After about 2 minutes, the logo disappears and the screen goes blank. I have to shut down the computer manually. The weird thing is, it only happens every so often..about every other boot up.

I ran grub-customiser to set default kernel, and saw the GFX mode setting, thinking "Hey, my monitor is native at 1440x900! I'll use that!" ...Didn't think about how the GFX card isn't initialized at that point, so my res is limited to 640x480... So the first problem was a system hang at the grub menu, with "Input Not Supported" displayed on the monitor.I changed the GFX mode back, and ran update-grub, and with a grin on my face, I rebooted. The grin went away fast, when I saw that none of the kernels showed in the grub menu, and I have only the two memtest entries. It appears that, while all the files are still intact, grub is not seeing the kernels. I had an idle partition of about 13 GB on hand, so after trying all sorts of things, I did a clean install on the little 13 GB partition. Still no dice, after doing an apt-get purge grub etc etc etc on my main Ubuntu partition, to make sure that the new grub was running. I still have only memtest, even though I can open the /boot directory and see the kernel files. I tried going into the grub command line and starting manually, but tab-complete does not suggest any of the kernel files, and tells me that the files do not exist, if I type in their full names.
View 6 Replies View Relatedrecently performed an upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. when I rebooted, my GRUB menu showed only the memtest86+ option, rather than the usual options for Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Arch, and WinXP (which I haven't booted in a very long time, so I am almost 100% sure that it is not WinXP's fault. I was able to boot using a Live CD, and when I checked grub.cfg, all of my boot entries were still there. However, when GRUB itself actually loads, only memtest86+ is in the menu. I also checked that I can still boot by editing the memtest86+ option in grub so that it matched the entry for Ubuntu in grub.cfg, and it still booted correctly. However, I am curious as to why my GRUB is now forcing me to manually enter the boot entry on each boot. Here is my grub.cfg:

So I managed to install Debian Jessie on a MSI G70 2PE Apache Pro that came with Windows 8.
First I partitioned some space on the laptop. Then I put on the net install cd for Debian and installed it on UEFI mode. It installed correctly.
Now I'm on Grub and when Debian tries to boot it gets stuck on "Loading initial ramdisk". The cursor under it doesn't even blink. The only way to get out of there is by Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Secure Boot is turned off. Fast boot is also off. If I try to boot on recovery mode gets stuck all the same.
The options on my grub are

Windows Boot Manager (UEFI on /dev/sda2)
System Setup.
If I choose the Windows option, Windows boots, no problem.
If I choose the edit option for the Debian entry this is what it shows

What is happening and what should I try to make this work? Could it be a graphics card issue since this computer has a Nvidia Gpu?
Using Ubuntu 10.10 and Win XP - dual drives booted by GNU Grub version 1.98 +20100804-5ubuntu 3 Every now and then, a "Memory Test (memtest 86+)" and a "Memory Test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)" line are added to my Grub startup screen. This causes Grub to start-up a different line than I have set to default. (Ubuntu vs. Windows, etc.)
1. How do I edit the start-up Grub to remove the "memtest" lines?
2. How do I prevent this from occurring?

Well I can't use my PC, both of my operation systems are non-functional.Windows get stuck (which is something completely typical for Microsoft stuff) on Windows logo screen, or safe mode loading files..Debian installation is messy.Firstly I installed Debian 6.0 on a Virtual DVD Disc mounted. I followed the installation process strictly and move forward to Debian startup.It asked me for account. root as "username" and the password as "password" didn't work so I logged in as "localhost" normal user.
However.. I started to realize that I actually also had to install the Graphical Environment in order to have Debian with the desired GNOME Desktop.. I went to aptitude to install the Graphic Environment Package but it said that I have no root rights.. I tried to log-in again, using the correct details but failed.I tried to get in, using the sudo command, but the sudo command also didn't work. Of course.. since I can't install packages, I can't either install sudo."su -" or "su" also prompt me to select a password which I apparently have no clue of.
Then I went to Debian Recovery, because there I was logged as root. It also pointed out that "Root Account is locked". I went to install packages finally.. But when the installation started to proceed It asked me for disk insertion in a specific folder?There I got lost completely.

I am able to boot from a flash drive and have run the boot script. This laptop did not have a dual boot system on it but it did have windows on it at one time, converted to ubuntu.

Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.
I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.
I was dual-booting XP and Ubuntu 10.10 for a while, but as I never used Ubuntu it was just taking up space, so I figured I'd get rid of it. I used a partitioning tool from inside XP to remove the Ubuntu partition, forgetting that I used GRUB2 every time I booted to select which OS to load. Now when I start my computer I get stuck at the "grub rescue>" screen.After searching for solutions to this problem all of them said to either use the Windows XP CD to fix the Master Boot Record or reinstall Ubuntu, but I dont have my XP CD and there isnt enough room on my hard drive anymore for a Ubuntu install. Is there anything else I can do to fix this?

I recently re-installed my dead home server with Ubuntu 9.10 Server but it seems that there is a large delay loading grub, before the error "error: no such disk" comes up and the Ubuntu finally boots normally. I've videoed it, see what I mean at http://www.......com/watch?v=0H7hsa5QIc0 .
What would be causing this error and how would I go about fixing it?
I accidently deleted my ubuntu partition, and when boot I get this message:GRUB loading.error:unknown filesystemgrub rescue>I can't get into my bios options either... I just see the MSI splash screen and it cuts right to this error message.

I went through the procedure to install Ubuntu 9.10 alongside Windows XP. The installation completed without complaint. But when I reboot the PC I get the error message "Grub loading error: no such partition...". and the keyboard is dead. I am using a Sony vaio PCG-FR215H laptop on which I have fitted new HDD and CD-drive. I carried out the installation by first booting up a live version of Ubuntu on a USB thumb drive and then clicking on the 'install Ubuntu' icon on the Live Ubuntu desktop. (I coudn't use a Live CD to install as this fails for some reason). I regained use of Windows XP on the PC by booting with a Windows 95 boot floppy and typing "fdisk /mbr". So, does anyone know what might have cased this grub error? Also, are there ways to try and fix the problem manually. I.e. can I get a copy of good versions of the files that are likely corrupted and then replace the stuff that I will have written over when I did the "fdisk /mbr"?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just bought a new laptop (with no installed OS) and have (excitedly) burned a live cd for Karmic Koala 64bit: several people on the laptop manufacturer forums have got working with this particular laptop.
The live session works fine but when I install and then reboot I get 'GRUB Loading' with a flashing underscore and nothing else happens. I've found this thread and this bug report and have tried reinstalling GRUB to no avail.
I also have a live cd for 9.04 which I've tried to install and get a the same problem only now the message is 'GRUB Loading stage1.5' So I don't think it's a problem with the version of GRUB as described in the bug report thread.
I read something else that said it could be a problem with the mbr being in some way geared towards Windows but I'm not sure. I tried following those instructions but nothing happened and then I just got the same error again.
Any help would be greatly received since obviously I'm pretty desperate to get my spangly (and expensive) new machine to work. Edit: I also have a thread at the manufacturers' forums. But we're at a loss there too.

I have been using Ubuntu for a while now on a netbook and even installed it on another pc, but I never tried dual-booting before... I just recently built a pc (my first custom build), and I'm having major difficulties getting a dual-boot running with Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. I'm trying to install these on one hdd. I don't know if it's a hardware issue or not, but the bios doesn't seem to like grub... I installed Win 7 first, and before installing Ubuntu on a separate partition, Win 7 would boot up fine. (Although, sometimes the bios would ignore my key presses for entering the bios menu or the boot-menu... When I only had Windows installed.)
When I turn on the pc, I mostly get a blinking cursor, with no messages at all. Nothing would boot at all, grub doesn't seem to load, and no OS would load by default. This would even happen sometimes after I set CD-ROM as the first item on the boot order list, trying to boot from the Ubuntu liveCD since there was no way for me to reach either of my installs on my HDD. I tried several suggestions I found online, and nothing seems to help. I even tried both grub 1.99 and grub 0.97, but still not much luck, (Although, grub legacy seems to load slightly more often...) I don't really want to have to resort to using Ubuntu through a VM, but it looks like this is the only option left... Is there some way I can dual boot with something other than grub?
Here's something I noticed after trying Ubuntu a few times. I'm not sure how relevant this is to my issue but, at times, on booting from a liveCD, I see several lines appearing that say something like "over-current change on port 2" should I be worried about this? Is something wrong with my mobo or psu? Another thing and this was before installing Ubuntu, when I boot up the pc, my keyboard is sometimes disabled until it's re-plugged in to a usb port. Maybe this has something to do with over-current charge? I'm just trying to figure out if anything needs to be replaced... I got sick of having to replugin the keyboard since I was constantly restarting the pc, so I started using a less fancy keyboard and it seems to be recognized most of the time (sometimes the bios would still ignore my boot-menu key press attempts).
I installing Fedora 12. I did ALL the same as in the installation guide, GRUB installed into MBR. And after installation and rebooting - nothing happens, after BIOS messages there is nothing - computer hangs. GRUB seems to be not installedI have 2 hard disks. At first I tried to install on the 2-nd drive(it is slave). Afterward I detach one disk and try with only one hard disk(it is master). Nothing changes - computer hangs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI did updates that came up automatically, and now when it rebooted, I can't go in to anything except memtest. I held shift to see the menu and it still only showed those. I can't loose my data so reinstalling isn't an option for me. Right now I'm using the CD to boot to this. I can see my data on my HDD and its there, but I don't know what to do in order to make it boot to the OS partition (Just switched from Windows 3 days ago).
