Ubuntu :: GRUB4DOS - Menu Entry To Run Memtest Does Not Work
Jan 30, 2010I just finished an install with 4 OS's. DOS, XP, WIN7, and UBUNTU. They work fine no with problems. However, the menu entry to run memtest does not work, However on my other system it works. The failing system is an i7 and the working one is a Core Duo. Both have a lot of ram. The Ubuntu os was copied with GPARTED. So it is identical.The menu.lst was a copy/paste job and then the HDxx's modified as needed. Please take a look and tell me where I went wrong.menulst.txt

Jan 23, 2010First time this has happened. I installed Fedora first (XP already installed) and then installed Ubuntu 9.10 64. Fedora doesn't show up on boot up menu. I've tried update-grub.
Before I would have just edited menu.lst, but now?? I dunno.

Dec 23, 2010I recently have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Netbook Edition in my personal netbook. The thing is that I had installed Windows 7 in the hard disk drive so I decided to install Ubuntu alongside with it. After the process of installation everything was cool but I hadn't the Grub working. I then pressed the Shift button during the booting process so I got the Grub menu but it didn't show the Windows 7 partition. The Windows installation was not erased because its file system is present in Nautilus. I have tried reinstalling the Grub a thousand times but nothing changes. I have attached the results of the boot info script so you can have some info about my booting configuration.

Jul 31, 2011I ran grub-customiser to set default kernel, and saw the GFX mode setting, thinking "Hey, my monitor is native at 1440x900! I'll use that!" ...Didn't think about how the GFX card isn't initialized at that point, so my res is limited to 640x480... So the first problem was a system hang at the grub menu, with "Input Not Supported" displayed on the monitor.I changed the GFX mode back, and ran update-grub, and with a grin on my face, I rebooted. The grin went away fast, when I saw that none of the kernels showed in the grub menu, and I have only the two memtest entries. It appears that, while all the files are still intact, grub is not seeing the kernels. I had an idle partition of about 13 GB on hand, so after trying all sorts of things, I did a clean install on the little 13 GB partition. Still no dice, after doing an apt-get purge grub etc etc etc on my main Ubuntu partition, to make sure that the new grub was running. I still have only memtest, even though I can open the /boot directory and see the kernel files. I tried going into the grub command line and starting manually, but tab-complete does not suggest any of the kernel files, and tells me that the files do not exist, if I type in their full names.

Apr 1, 2011Using Ubuntu 10.10 and Win XP - dual drives booted by GNU Grub version 1.98 +20100804-5ubuntu 3 Every now and then, a "Memory Test (memtest 86+)" and a "Memory Test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)" line are added to my Grub startup screen. This causes Grub to start-up a different line than I have set to default. (Ubuntu vs. Windows, etc.)
1. How do I edit the start-up Grub to remove the "memtest" lines?
2. How do I prevent this from occurring?

Mar 19, 2010I just installed archlinux to try it out and need to add the entry to Grub.
I formated the hard drive with the a root partition for arch of 42Gb and ubuntu can see it perfeclty.
When I was installing arch I made a mistake and installed grub again, overwriting my previous grub with my ubuntu and windows entries.
So I fixed and got my working grub back with SuperGrubDisk, but now I want to add the ARCHLINUX entry to Grub and dont know how. I have added the previous entries from the grub that ARCH installed and moved the initrd and vmlinuz files to the /boot directory on ubuntu, but it doesnt work. I did a similar thing with Acronis True Image rescue cds(to avoid having to insert the cd in order to use it) and it worked like a charm, but I am lost in this one.
Here are my partitions, sdb is the one where all my partitions and files are (sdb5 is where ARCH is), the other 2 are backups:

Ubuntu :: Cannot Boot Red Hat Since There Is No Entry In The Grub?
Oct 26, 2010I have a pc where there was redhat installed, and I decided to put ubuntu in dual boot.The installation went ok, but now I can't log in with redhat anymore. RH was installed on a RAID partition, and I installed ubuntu on an additional HD.
Now I have two problems:
a) I cannot boot red hat, since there is no such entry in the grub
b) this machine had several users, that now cannot access it remotely anymore.
Below you can find the output of fdisk -l and the grub.cfg files, the old red hat one, and the new one created by ubuntu. Not that in any case I cannot reinstall redhat, since there are other people using the machine.

Nov 15, 2010I was cleaning old kernels from Grub menu, all sorted except for a vista entry that i could not delete. Ran this line which I found,"sudo chmod -x /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober", to remove unwanted entries, now only the linux entry left in Grub menu, windows 7 entry gone. The vista entry was from an old install which is not there anymore. Running 10.10 at the moment which is dualbooted with win7.

For Suse I use:

Jan 6, 2010I have installed ubuntu 9.10 and everything was working fine. Just a minutes ago a window popped up telling me that a complete update couldn't be completed, and asked me to go on with a partial update. I did it and then a window popped up (I think it was debconf running) asking me if I wanted to delete phpmyadmin database configuration or if I wanted to keep it... seemed like the updater was removing quite a bunch of packages!
After that I was presented with a long list of packages to be removed (among them apache2, php5, linux headers, etc.) I thought it was going to remove them in order to reinstall them latter, so I let it go) but now there's no ubuntu entry in the grub menu, so I had to boot with windows! Right now I'm downloading ubuntu 9.10 livecd to give it a try...

I have tried many different boot options and have only gotten it to show the first black and white bootsplash but never can continue to boot. I would like - instead to USB-key that is always not to be found, to somehow "move" the clonezilla (on a USB stick). What I have tried to is to make a separate partition to install this on, copied all the files on the USB -key to that partition, and then make a new entry in GRUB via yast. Then I point to the new wmlinus and initramfs. I would have been much surprised if something link this was working after first shot. But it was also not working after the 80. shot.

I don't see any file gets written to the log directory. That suggests to me that cron didn't run the job, as confirmed by /var/log/syslog.

I have 2 IDE disks and one sata disk. The first IDE disk is hd0, the second IDE is hd1. The SATA disk is hd2. In the setup, I selected hd0 to install grub. Fedora 11 was installed on the SATA disk (hd2).[edit] I forgot to say, that Fedora 10 is on /dev/sda and Fedora 9 on /dev/sdb
