i installed ubuntu 10.10 to my external HDD and it works. Recently, i reinstalled windows therefore, there is no more grub menu when my computer boots. I tried to reinstall grub to my external HDD but it doesn't work.

View 9 Replies View Relatedmy desktop pc is acting very strange. cold boots often take up to 10 attempts before the computer successfully boots. after the 1st successful boot, i can expect 1-3 "glitches". here's what happens:
the first few cold boots fail at various points during the boot process. there appears to be no pattern to it. when it happens, the machine is completely locked up. it responds to nothing, except holding in the power switch for 5 seconds. i'll go through this procedure several times.
finally, it will boot all the way to a desktop. from there, once i log it, i can expect it to lock up completely, usually once or twice. and then, finally, the screen will go blank and it will suddenly be back at the login screen.
usually, once i log in that last time, it's at least usable, although hardly stable. watching flash video seems to cause a complete lockup, with the sound looping. it doesn't matter where the content is coming from (videos or similar) nor does it matter which browser i'm using (firefox or chrome). i've stopped visiting videos-type sites in the meantime.
this installation has always been a tad bit screwy. 99% of the time, firefox fails to shut down properly, resulting in a message letting me know that a crash was detected. earlier today, i was alerted to 3 kernel crashes simultaneously.
right now, i'm using the pc, as normal. the random nature of the problems would lead me to believe it was hardware-related, specifically something like memory (ram). however, i installed memtest86+ and ran it. i walked away for 4+ hours. came back, it was running, no errors were found. i stopped the test and booted, trouble-free.
the pc seems to be stable enough for a backup, but this does have me concerned...obviously. i'm debating wiping the drive clean and installing f13, just as a test. if it's screwy as well, it would have to be hardware-related, wouldn't you think??
I recently upgraded grub -> grub2 on my karmic box. Grub2 worked when chainloaded from legacy grub, and also the first time I tried it standalone. Both times the grub2 menu came up.
I ran vbeinfo at a grub2 command prompt, and found my monitor's native res listed - 1280x1024. I added that to my /etc/defaults/grub and then ran update-grub, and rebooted. This time no menu appeared and the default entry booted straight away. I suspected that the resolution was not supported for some reason or that the way I entered it in the config file was wrong, so I commented it out again in /etc/default/grub, and ran update-grub again - to no avail.
I have since tried lots of different formats for the GRUB_GFXMODE, such as 1280x1024@24, 1280x1024x24, and the normal 640x480, but none of them give me a grub menu. I have even tried using GRUB_TERMINAL=console, to no avail. I have checked the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file each time to make sure my changes were put there correctly by update-grub. I have also made sure that timeout was set to 10, and the hidden timeout was set to 0. My GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet".
I have reinstalled grub2, grub-pc, and grub-common, and I have dpkg-reconfigured them all too. I have no idea what to do to get my grub menu showing up again.
I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and now it's messed up my Windows Vista partition. When I try to load Windows it boots to a strange login menu with low resolution. It then takes me to a screen with options like Repair/Fix, Recovery, Complete Recovery... I'll click Repair and and then it will say No errors found, Shut down, Restart.

I have a dual boot Windows-Linux, I set the default as Windows. Recently my computer started booting to the system memory test in the grub menu instead of Windows. When I try to open the Start-Up Manager now it asks me for the password as usual and then does not start. How I would change it back to windows for the default? I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.

View 1 Replies View Relatedgot myself a new pc, windows 7 installed.. i just got done installing ubuntu10.10. it said to finnish, i had to reboot.. ok, no problem.. i reboot, loading says uuid is not valid.. but, it loads 7 fine.. they are on the same drive, but different partitions. i only got a wireless usb keyboard and when it goes to the shell, it doesnt seen to recognize it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy setup: a work laptop that has a corporate Win7 image, and to which I have added a few partitions to try various linux distributions. The MBR is governed by Lilo from the Slackware 13.37 installation in /dev/sda5. The MBR boots no kernel image directly, it only chainloads the boot sectors of partitions /dev/sda1, /dev/sda5, /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda7. The latter three are formatted ext4.The Win7 boot mechanism traditionally resides in /dev/sda1, and the linux distros are required to install their boot machines into their respective partitions.
What I am trying to say is, I installed Ubuntu 11.04 into /dev/sda7, and told the grub installer the same thing: install yourself into the boot sector of /dev/sda7. Kudos btw for the Ubuntu installer, it comes across as a very professional piece of software.

I wanted to install Debian 8.0 on my second hdd in my UEFI machine, but when I choose UEFI boot from USB, GRUB command line appears, and I cannot boot up the setup. I used Rufus to create the bootable USB stick, using the amd64 kde CD image. I tried several images and I deleted the Linux and Efi partitions from previous installation of Ubuntu . Also I deleted GRUB from the Windows 7 Efi partition.
In the UEFI setup fast boot and secure boot are disabled, and I don't seem to have the option to boot in legacy mode, if I choose the simple USB boot option (without "UEFI" in front) I get "please insert correct boot media, and press any key or reboot". I couldn't manually boot from GRUB command line, because it is showing that all the drives are empty, and if I type "boot" I get "please load the kernel first".
The first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

I have Fedora 13 and XP installed on my laptop. Right now it only boots to XP but I have a Fedora Live CD so is there some way I can use the live cd to boot into Fedora and edit or install grub to show up at boot?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

I am testing my crash recovery strategy for my linux system and I am having trouble with GRUB. I am basically restoring my backup (i.e. tar) unto a different hard drive, but I am having problems getting the machine to boot without me having to type the GRUB commands at the GRUB prompt that is presented when the machine boots up off the new hard drive. I have tried to restore the MBR in two ways (the 2nd one is the one that gets me to the GRUB prompt):
1. Get the MBR off the original drive and write it unto the new drive (all via dd), but that did not work at all: the machine hangs right away during boot up. It seems to hang right at the point where the BIOS tries to read the MBR.

reboot and remove FEDORA CD Using the 2nd option above, I get the GRUB> prompt during bootup. I can then boot into the system by issuing the commands that are in the menu.lst file, followed by the "boot" command. However, I would like for those commands to happen automatically, just like in the original configuration. It seems to me that GRUB is actually finding all its stage files because I doubt the GRUB program (the one displaying the prompt) fits entirely in the 446 bytes it has on the MBR. So, it must be loading its stage 2 (and stage 1.5??) files from my /boot partition. However, if GRUB is loading its stage files off the boot partition, why does it not load/read the menu.lst/grub.conf contained in the boot partition also?

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my new netbook from a USB stick. The laptop came with Win7 Starter, which I kept on a small partition. Installation was apparently successful, but when I start up the computer, it will go straight to Win7 and GRUB doesn't appear.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to 11.04, and after messing around with Unity for awhile decided I'd try out Gnome 3.After rebooting to finish the installation, I noticed that the interface had reverted to what my desktop looked like in 10.10, except the color scheme was different. I also got an error message saying my computer's graphics couldn't handle Gnome 3 (I'm on a netbook). Then I went online to look up instructions on how to switch back to Unity (since the option wasn't available on the login screen). After following the first step, which involved entering a command into the terminal, I left the house for awhile.
When I got back, the screen was black with white text (terminal-esque) asking for my username. After typing it in and pressing enter, it asked for my password, and after entering that it became a "terminal". This screen comes up every time I start my computer now, and I have no idea what to do. I could reinstall Ubuntu from a flash drive, but I want to be able to access my files. Is there any way to get around this, or recover my files without taking out the hard drive? As you can probably tell from my post, I'm very new to Ubuntu and Linux, and the mess I'm now in is the result of acting on uneducated impulse.

Truecrypt bootloader is in the MBR
The Truecrypt bootloader will boot other loaders if esc is hit, I can choose to boot /dev/sda5 and grub loads, but no menu is displayed, all I get is a GRUB> cli. I've reinstalled Grub to /dev/sda5 using the chroot method outlined in the Grub2 info page on this site, but it always results in the same outcome of ending up in the Grub cli. I can chroot that install and attempt a update-grub, but all i get is "cannot find list of partitions!" attached is the boot_info_script results.
Once upon a time I had Maverick Meerkat installed on two drives. Now I've used Disk Utility's "Format Drive" to erase it and remove the Master Boot Record partitioning on one of them. Yet I still have to go through the GRUB menu each time I start up my computer, as if there are multiple bootable drives. I've read that 'sudo grub-install /dev/sdb' might work, but that only seems to reset the bootloader, not remove it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an external USB drive with Mint9 Fluxbox installed on it. At one point, I wiped the drive and set it up using GPT instead of MFT, then partitioned the drive in GParted and installed the OS.
This setup was working fine, but now I have a new laptop, and the OS won't boot. I just saw the errors, "No such partition: UUID=xxx", "Could not find kernel, hit any key to continue". So I attempted to reinstall GRUB via terminal, but saw errors saying that GPT requires a grub_bios partition. So I made a 1mb partition at the end of the drive, (the only unallocated space without moving anything) and selected the grub_bios flag.
I was then able to reinstall Grub without incident, rebooted, selected the USB drive to boot first in bios, but still no Grub menu!?! It just boots from the next device in the bios list.
I'm currently using Crunchbang on a USB stick, which is where I'm running terminal commands from. I want to be able to boot from my external drive on any computer.
I just restored my Windows partition from SFS so at least it's read by boot info. It says it's booting the Windows partition but it always boots straight into Ubuntu with no GRUB menu at all. Heres my boot info...
