When I boot up, Natty does not find my mouse. Ever. I have to unplug the mouse from the USB port and plug it back in and then everything works properly. I've never had this problem with previous releases. It happens if I boot into Gnome or into Unity.

I'm using the ubuntu-classic + compiz desktop with 11.04. However, compared to older versions the behaviour of focus-follows-mouse seems to have changed for the worse when using the keyboard to switch applications. In older versions, an app selected using alt-tab or scale or similar keyboard method would get focus, even if the mouse was not over it. Focus follows-mouse behaviour would only happen again if you moved the mouse to a new app. In 11.04, the app selected using alt-tab immediately loses focus if the mouse is not over it. This makes alt-tab kinda useless Is there any way I can fix this behaviour to the pre-11.04 version?

Everything was working fine until one day when I went to switch it on and it shows up everything its suppose to, the blue logo etc but then it loads upto a black screen with the mouse poitner. I can move the mouse pointer around and such and the lights flash but stop suddenly.I can't use the bios recovery disk as I haven't got a USB big enough.

I'm running Natty on a Dell Precision M65 with a NVidia Quadro FX 350M graphics card. My problem is that I see no panels or applications, I'm able to start applications using the run dialog by pressing Alt+F2 and they start, but I can't see them.

after upgrading 10.10 to Natty 11.04 my Kubuntu 64-bit System won't boot anymore. During upgrade an error message appears, saying GRUB2 cannot be installed into a partition (something about bad idea and blocklist). First reboot shows this error message:

I tried to repair GRUB2 by using a Live CD, mounting all needed partitions, chroot to my installed system and running update-grub2. This time no error message appears. Next reboot the system does hang, showing "Booting..." for minutes. Nothing happens.I'm using a partition boot loader (for Linux) since years on my Netbook / Notebook. Due to security reasons all partitions of the mobile device were encrypted. Unfortunately I also need an Windows system, so the first partition contains an Win 7 installation encrypted with Truecrypt.
Truecrypt needs to be installed into the MBR (as far as I do know and from my first tests some times ago). So I installed the Linux bootloader into the /boot partition (sda6).
Linux root partition is also encrypted using cryptsetup/Luks.How can I fix this problem, keep my Truecrypt/Windows system and boot the encrypted Linux system?
my desktop pc is acting very strange. cold boots often take up to 10 attempts before the computer successfully boots. after the 1st successful boot, i can expect 1-3 "glitches". here's what happens:
the first few cold boots fail at various points during the boot process. there appears to be no pattern to it. when it happens, the machine is completely locked up. it responds to nothing, except holding in the power switch for 5 seconds. i'll go through this procedure several times.
finally, it will boot all the way to a desktop. from there, once i log it, i can expect it to lock up completely, usually once or twice. and then, finally, the screen will go blank and it will suddenly be back at the login screen.
usually, once i log in that last time, it's at least usable, although hardly stable. watching flash video seems to cause a complete lockup, with the sound looping. it doesn't matter where the content is coming from (videos or similar) nor does it matter which browser i'm using (firefox or chrome). i've stopped visiting videos-type sites in the meantime.
this installation has always been a tad bit screwy. 99% of the time, firefox fails to shut down properly, resulting in a message letting me know that a crash was detected. earlier today, i was alerted to 3 kernel crashes simultaneously.
right now, i'm using the pc, as normal. the random nature of the problems would lead me to believe it was hardware-related, specifically something like memory (ram). however, i installed memtest86+ and ran it. i walked away for 4+ hours. came back, it was running, no errors were found. i stopped the test and booted, trouble-free.
the pc seems to be stable enough for a backup, but this does have me concerned...obviously. i'm debating wiping the drive clean and installing f13, just as a test. if it's screwy as well, it would have to be hardware-related, wouldn't you think??
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my HP Pavilion a320n computer with a ps2 mouse and the mouse pointer points with the bottom of the mouse and not the upper tip of the point. It does the same thing with Ubuntu 10.04.1. In Windows 7 and XP the mouse is normal. I don't know how I could adjust it or is this just a bug in the OS?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have custom built Linux kernel (2.6.31) and also xorg. xorg is using xserver 1.7.3 . I have an application which simulates the mouse and sends mouse move events. When I switch the device on, the system boots and Xorg comes up, I can see X cursor on the system. When I start sending mouse move events from the application, the cursor do not move. If I attach mouse to the device and then move the mouse, from this point onwards the mouse events get detected from the simulation application. I have checked the dmesg log as follows

I have install fedora11 live and the mouse work well when installing.When you reboot the mouse works ok until the welcome screen apears then the mouse stops working and I cannot continue with the postinstall. I have a 1TB usb externalHD that I am installing fedora11 and have partitioned it so that I have 500Gb free for fedora, system is doucore 2.4,4gb RAm, I tryed doing this with three differend mice and connectting the mouse to different usb ports
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to FC14 (64) from FC13 (32) and the mouse middle button (simultaneous left+right button) paste function has stopped working. I tested it with 3 makes/models of different mice and trackballs. For some reason (left+right) mouse returns the same code as the single right-button ('xev' value = 3). This worked in all previous FC and RH distros I've used in the past. Did a default setting get zonked somewhere? System: Toshiba laptop w/ USB mouse.

I'm running FC12 and GNOME.If I move the physical mouse about one inch, the mouse pointer moves across the entire screen.That's way too fast and way to sensitive.I prefer the mouse pointer to move far less distance on the screen when the physical mouse is moved.
From System->Preferences->Mouse, I set the various mouse Pointer Speed acceleration and Sensitivity to Slow, Fast, Low, High, and and I couldn't get it any better. Cheese simply says no camera found. Skryba says no devices found. Since this kernel patch was 2009-04-07 which is nearly a year ago it should be in latest kernel?

During install of 9.10 server, both ethernet adapters were found. One is built-in to the motherboard, the second is on a PCIe slot. Selected the on-board adapter for eth0 during install, set fixed IP on the web, connected, updated, etc. w/ no problems. The second adapter is for the LAN.BUT, on first and subsequent reboots after installation complete the second adapter is not detected at all, as if it were not even plugged into the PCI or the driver not loaded. This happens on either of two slots, with two different adapters, Intel or Netgear, both pretty recent, and both of which are detected and work in a different box. 'Ethtool eth1' says device not found.This is a fairly recent motherboard 3N78EM).Since the adapter was found during installation I'm assuming that the problem is not with not the board. I've built several server systems with two or three ethernet adapters and have never run into this situation.

Upon restart i found myself in a full-screen command line, and I can't get to the familiar GUI.I entered sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and the response was that the desktop is the newest version. So it is there, how do I use it? Restarting brings me back to the command line.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe left hinge on my Dell Inspiron 1521 cracked and broke. Last night, I removed the hinge since it had frozen in an "up" position. I had to remove the hinge plate to do so. Since then, I am unable to boot my computer. Whenever I boot up, I see the Dell Boot Screen (like normal) and then the screen goes blank except for a the words GRUB at the top of the screen. I've tried using the Live Disk to recover, but I don't have a "Recover" option on the set up menu and prior to installing, the set up client advises that there is no operating system installed and that I have only one partition.

View 3 Replies View RelatedA couple weeks ago i installed Ubuntu with Gnome on my Dell inspiron 9400, on a fresh new(empty) hard drive. Went without a hitch and has worked great for a couple weeks. A couple nights ago, i opened the update manager and saw that there were a few recommended updates, i browsed through them, none looked spooky or anything so i installed them all. After rebooting, my computer now does nothing at all. I get to the log in, i type in my password and then after that, all that's there is my background picture. No status bars, no wifi connections. I can right click and get a menu, but there's nothing there of any help, just background settings. i'm trying to figure it out as i go along, finding advice in forums and stuff. but i havent seen this problem anywhere. I installed from a live iso. i'm not sure if i can put it back in and somehow undo whatever happened. I'm at a complete impasse with this.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is probably more of a VMware problem than an Ubuntu problem, but I am hoping that perhaps someone else running Ubuntu has experienced this and/or has insight.I have a dual-boot system running Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 (Both 64-bit).installed VMware Player in Windows 7 and created a virtual machine which should use the partition that Ubuntu is installed on. When I try to run the VM, the "bios" screen goes by and then I get an error message stating that "a virtual cpu has entered the shutdown state." I have tried changing the boot order to boot from cd-rom first and with the ubuntu cd in the drive, the vm will boot from cd and run. Note that I do run VMware Player as an administrator so that it should be allowed to access the hardware directly.
I have tried googling for this and searching VMware communities but pretty much all I find is relative to attempts to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard.Any help would be appreciated.(Note that I have a coworker who has done this successfully and we have compared notes and nothing is popping out as different from a basic configuration standpoint. We do however have different hardware as we are talking Dell Latitude Laptop (him) vs. Lenovo X201 Tablet (Me), both pretty new)
I had been running "Etch" and upgraded to "Lenny". Now my mouse is NOT tracking correctly. When I move the mouse and then press and release the 'ctrl' key to show where the mouse pointer is the circle indicators are not where the pointer is. I therefore cannot make any selections from menus as 'lenny' thinks the mouse is somewhere other than where the pointer is. Also are there keyboard hot keys that i can use to access the menus?
