I followed [URK] to have a splashscreen for my GRUB in 10.10. It is able to detect the splashscreen but does not show up when I boot the machine:

Installing Debian base, Debian did overwrite my old Grub (other partition, other Linux system) .
Now I have no splashimage any more ...
How to restaure a splashimage now ?
I have a roughly 3-year old PC that I put together from parts (listed below) that has been running great with various flavors of Linux as the sole operating system. It is currently running Ubuntu 10.4. A couple of months ago, it started to have intermittent problems booting. The machine will hang before it gets to the Ubuntu "boot" screen with the dots that show progress as the machine boots. If I look at the power on messages from the BIOS, it fails at different points in the process - sometimes during the memory test, sometimes during the search for IDE drives. It fails about 2 out of every 5 attempts to boot. It sometimes takes 2-3 tries at booting before it actually works. Sometimes when it does boot, the Ethernet jack doesn't work and I see errors in syslog about there not being a carrier.
There are no syslog entries when the machine does not boot.The machine is plugged into a UPS. The UPS indicates that it is running at 13% of capacity at 123V/60Hz. I'm in the US.Once the machine boots normally, it will stay up without issues for days.I've checked the 4GB of RAM (I added 2GB to the original 2GB several months ago) using the memory testing application on the System Rescue CD and no errors were found.I've replaced the motherboard battery, which seemed to help for a few weeks, but then the problem returned.I've checked the hard drive for errors using the SMART diagnostics tool in System -> Administration -> Disk Utility and buy running fsck.The interior of the case is not very dusty and all the fans appear to be working.Are there things I can do to investigate and fix this issue other than starting to replace components - starting with the motherboard and the power supply?The parts of the machine:

I have no interest in eye-candy. I want to know how do I disable the boot splashscreen completely. I prefer a text-only boot screen, without any images or animation. NOTE: I am using Ubuntu 10.04 .

View 3 Replies View RelatedI got the grub loader to work finally. The problem is it does not always display at initial boot or a restart. I have seen the selection menu but it doesn't always appear. I have it set to point to windows so that my wife can hit enter when she gets a blank screen.
Below is the contents of my /etc/grub.conf file:
I'm currently running Karmic 9.10 in dual boot with Windows 2000. My computer has automatically updated and installed kernels 2.6.31-17, -19 and -20 (They show up in Synaptic as installed).
However, the newest kernel choice in my GRUB menu is 2.6.31-16-generic (followed by -15 and -14). These all start without any errors.
Question: Why haven't the newer updates shown up in GRUB for booting purposes?
Could it be a question that I didn't answer correctly some time back about accepting or not accepting an update or change in GRUB?
How can this be changed? The new kernels do not show up in Start-Up Manager either.
How do I make debian not show the grub list, and just go to the newest kernel?

In order to use each OS I manually hav to go and change the "first boot device" option in BIOS setting and boot into required OS. View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Fedora (F13) for the first time, on a new HDD, to give myself a dual-boot system. So currently I have:
So, at the appropriate stage in the install menu, there is an option for where to install GRUB, and a drop-down to choose which drive is the primary BIOS boot drive.
However, in both cases, no other drive except my new sdc is visible. So, I can install GRUB to MBR of sdc, or to first sector of boot partition - but no option to put it to my primary boot drive MBR on sda.
Likewise, in the GRUB configuration page, if I go to Add another OS, the only option it gives me is my new Fedora install. It doesn't list the Vista OS on sda at all.
The result is that I can boot to either OS by changing the boot drive priority in BIOS.
I guess my question is this:
- is this expected behaviour from the installer, meaning that I'll need to configure GRUB manually somehow? (gulp ) or
- did I do something wrong in the install process? or
- is this some weird bug manifesting itself?
Can anyone post the methods to set grub2 splashimage?
View 5 Replies View RelatedBasically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...
I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...
I can not boot from cd or usb!
I had a dual boot machine with fedora 12 and windows vista and I could use grub boot-loader to switch between two. Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.

sda1: W7
sda2: FAT16
sda3: /boot
sda4: encrypted LVM with debian (everything besides /boot)
now I've re-installed W7 so grub was overwritten. I've tried the procedure which worked for me previously:booting with the netinst usb in rescue mode, choosing a root partition to mount, using grub-install to reinstall the grub:

Now I'm on Jessie (stable), and this time this fails, and I am able to mount only sda3.grub-install doesn't exit so I'm assuming it has been replaced by `grub-installer'. also '/boot' doesnt exist so I created it manually.

I have an old BIOS (only 149 GB detected in 160 GB drive). I have installed very few OS as a result - Windows in first 80 GB , 2 distros (20 GB each) in next 40 MB which is within the 149 GB. On issue of "update-grub" grub seems to detect all OS and generates grub.cfg. But on boot , one distro does not appear in the menu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install wireless WiFi USB adapter LM-001 on to my machine. I downloaded the driver ZD1211LnxDrv_2_16_0_0 and followed the instruction rigorously. However, upon issuing the 'make' command, it stalled saying that that it cannot detect the /lib/modules/2.6.9-89.0.19.ELsmp/build directory. Here is the output:

When DNS server is configured on Windows server, it will automatically detect and catch computer names and IP address. With Linux (BIND), I have to enter each clients manual under zone file. example (computer1 IN A 10.10.1.4). is there anyway to make Linux detect client automatically as windows does?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot windows xp/ubuntu64 9.04 rig at home. Ubuntu is installed alongside windows(if i worded that correctly?). well last night i got the infamous error #15. so i popped in the live cd and messed around with grub. well i changed grubs boot to point to h0,5 which is where ubuntu resides and as you can guess i can not boot. i want to change it back to h0,0 or h0,1 however the hard drive is undetected.
I tried windows repair console but same thing cannot detect the drive. I pulled the drive out slipped it in my other machine and still same thing. so my question is how can i go about editing the grub menu.lst if i can't mount the drive?
Maybe i can just install a new grub/mbr? but i cant figure out hot to mount the drive.
Ubuntu hangs on splash screen when shutting down and restarting after creating startup scrip.
I created the upstart script using the following method:
sudo gedit /etc/init.d/local.autostart "Edit local.autostart"
sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/local.autostart And sudo update-rc.d local.autostart defaults 80. After this ubuntu hangs on the splash screen during shut down. If I remove the script by doing: sudo update-rc.d -f local.autostart remove
Then ubuntu can restart once again.
I don't like the username/password default screen, but i like the ones in /usr/share/backgrounds. I've been trying to change it for few hours. None of the advices on The Net work. I tried:
1) gconf-editor and /apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image gconf-editor /schemas/apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image I set it to picture file path, or splash/filename.png or even copied the desired picture to /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/ubuntu-splash.png - no changes
2) gdmsetup has no such option for me
3) also installed startupmanager - nothing as well.
I upgraded last night from 10.10 to 11.04. Things went well, download was quick, install was fine. I then tried to login, laptop accepted the password, splash screen appeared (jpeg file type); I had downloaded this quite a while ago;and I get the standard icons for KDE, but the laptop now freezes on the last icon, and stays there. The laptop makes the KDE login sounds/theme, but I cannot see the desktop.
I tried to login with out the desktop, which I can do, but I do not know where I have to go to remove the splash screen.
I recently upgraded my Fedora server from 13 -> 15 and imported all the linux and samba accounts from the old setup. I have the machine operating as a domain server for my network using samba and tbm files for storing user info for samba. I now have all the machine accounts (machine$) show up at the login screen after startup as well as the user accounts. How can I hide these machine accounts like before?
View 10 Replies View Relatedi did a fresh install of 10.04 on my asus 1005ha netbook (first-gen 1005ha, if it matters), and it works great. However, grub does NOT detect my windows partition. In gparted, the partition is recognized as "unknown". I can't mount it in ubuntu.
This is what fdisk gives me:

My windows 7 is not corrupted. it is also not virus-infected. I know what i am doing, and i know my windows is fine. it has been running fine prior to installing ubuntu. I'm just saying this becuz i noticed that viruses are a common response to similar problems like this.
i have a windows xp OS installed on C and on D ubuntu 64bit ! and i disabled from windows to see the booting manager where it shows me weather to choose Windows or ubuntu ! and the GURB menu , when it comes up i cant see windows !
Note: i tried the sudo update-gurb this or wtever command was it ! but also failed to show windows
I have set up a virtual machine under VMware Player 3.1.2 in Debian. Operating system of this virtual machine is a Windows Server 2003. I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu Studio on my PC, dual-booting it with Vista. Once the installation had finished, and I had rebooted, Grub showed the two Vista options:
Windows Vista (loader)
Windows Recovery Environment (loader)
When I load up "Windows Vista (loader)" it opens my Acer eRecovery Management, but when I load "Windows Recovery Environment (loader)" it opens what looks like a normal version of Vista. Is it possible that on installation, Grub accidentally swapped the two around, or have I probably mucked up my computer?
i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file
