Ubuntu :: Changing Gdm Login Splashscreen

I don't like the username/password default screen, but i like the ones in /usr/share/backgrounds. I've been trying to change it for few hours. None of the advices on The Net work. I tried:
1) gconf-editor and /apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image gconf-editor /schemas/apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image I set it to picture file path, or splash/filename.png or even copied the desired picture to /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/ubuntu-splash.png - no changes
2) gdmsetup has no such option for me
3) also installed startupmanager - nothing as well.

Ubuntu hangs on splash screen when shutting down and restarting after creating startup scrip.
I created the upstart script using the following method:
sudo gedit /etc/init.d/local.autostart "Edit local.autostart"
sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/local.autostart And sudo update-rc.d local.autostart defaults 80. After this ubuntu hangs on the splash screen during shut down. If I remove the script by doing: sudo update-rc.d -f local.autostart remove
Then ubuntu can restart once again.

I upgraded last night from 10.10 to 11.04. Things went well, download was quick, install was fine. I then tried to login, laptop accepted the password, splash screen appeared (jpeg file type); I had downloaded this quite a while ago;and I get the standard icons for KDE, but the laptop now freezes on the last icon, and stays there. The laptop makes the KDE login sounds/theme, but I cannot see the desktop.
I tried to login with out the desktop, which I can do, but I do not know where I have to go to remove the splash screen.

I have no interest in eye-candy. I want to know how do I disable the boot splashscreen completely. I prefer a text-only boot screen, without any images or animation. NOTE: I am using Ubuntu 10.04 .

Installing Debian base, Debian did overwrite my old Grub (other partition, other Linux system) .
Now I have no splashimage any more ...

Last night I had rebooted my machine and when it came back up it would no longer accept my password. My 7 year old son had been playing on the machine earlier so I assumed he inadvertently reset my password to something else. I rebooted again, added the rw init=/bin/bash was able to get in and reset my password. That worked, I was able to access with no problem. I was able to perform admin tasks, it would prompt for password and accept the password. I just went to edit a config file and all of a sudden it is no longer accepting my password again and (my son has been no where near it)?!!?
I am not even sure where to start troubleshooting this - I know I can reboot and reset the password again - but is there a way to figure out how this is happening.

On the website that Ubuntu provides for installing additional themes, when I download a "Login Screen" from the website it just downloads as a bunch of JPGs and backups. The downloads are just folders filled with them. I've been wanting to customise the appearance of my Ubuntu, and I want to know how I can make these login screen actually appear when I turn on my computer and login to Ubuntu.

after I changed my login image on ubuntu tweak i restarted to check if it worked, it didnt, all that shows up is a purple background i also did th same with a splash screen using "Splash screen" but it also does not appear

I'm running 64-bit 11.3 on a Dell 1535 laptop.At lunch today, the system booted-up as normal, then shut-down as normal. A handful of updates were installedduring that time.This evening, however, I arrive at the password splash screen, enter my password, and then the system churns a few seconds before resetting the splash screen. No error message, no "wrong password," just a normal splash screen. I tried going into Xen, the default 11.3 and failsafe -- same thing happened with each. When I navigated to the command line, my password worked fine, both for user and super-user.

I changed the Language and the keyboard to Amharic (normally I use US English). Ever since then I have been unable to log in as the keyboard is typing in Amharic and the original password was created in US English. I also tried << Ctrl+Alt+F1 >> and typed in the login name and password, even Root and the password but no luck.

Just been looking at an 11.04 bootable CD, where I was reminded of the continued existence of xfce. "Must try that again!" I thought, and installed it through the Software Centre on my 10.04 laptop. I washoping/expecting that xfce would then become an option in the Sessions pulldown at log-on, but no such luck. What should I be doing? It is not my intention to switch to xubuntu, just to take another look at an alternative window manager.

When I upgraded to 11.04 and decided to give Gnome 3 a chance I was stuck with a windows 2000 (or Redmond like) theme. I have since been able to change the theme in the desktop environment however the Login Screen still maintains the Windows 2000 like theme. I have extensively Googled how to change this, but I keep coming up empty handed. Does anyone have any ideas of how to change the Login Screen theme.

have the following issues with kde: when I try to login it shows a blackscreen with black cross-shaped pointer for a moment and then again login box appears. When I execute startx from tty kde loading freezes at splashscreen: I see all icons in a row but the last one (KDE button) is blurred.I have debian wheezy/sid, kernel 2.6.37.2, xserver-xorg 7.6+7, xserver-xorg-core 1.10.3-1, nvidia driver version 275.21.Here are logs.

I've just rolled out about 60 ubuntu 10.04 desktops. All of them are joined to our windows domain using likewiseopen.
At the gnome login screen, the users have to click "other" and type in their windows username and password.
Is there any way to bypass this and just have the username displayed?

First of all not sure if this is the correct forum but anyway.Ok well i installed this theme because i liked the look of windows 7 (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.p...content=113264).So i ran the GUIUninstall.sh and it seemed to work but the login screen still has the theme i was wondering how i could change it back to the defualt one.

I am unable to change session type when not requiring passord on login.
How requiring password was changed:
System/Administration/Users and Groups
Clicked on my User
Clicked "Change" next to "Password: Asked on login"
Checked the checkbox for "Don't ask for password on login"
OK'd, everything
Please try this yourself as it might be hard to understand. But the option to change session type (ie: Gnome failsafe instead of reguar Gnome) is only visable along side with the password field.
Is it possible to make the session type setting visable without requiering password on login?

Step 1: Create an audio file in (.ogg) format name (system-ready.ogg).
Step 2: Open nautilus with root privileges by pressing ALT+F2 and typing:
gksudo nautilus
Step 3: Navigate to /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/
Step 4: In this directory rename the current (system-ready.ogg) file to (system-ready.ogg.backup)
Step 5: Copy your custom (system-ready.ogg) file into this directory.
Step 6: Restart your computer and enjoy.

I was playing around with the window managers (in XFCE) by clicking each one to see what each one looks like, then screen went black and kicked me the login screen. Now I cannot login to that user, after inputting password it just kicks me back to the login screen. I can login to another user and the terminal. How can I return to the default window manager using the terminal or is there a file I can delete that will automatically return to

I am using fc.11 and loving it. i want to change login window but like fc.10, it is also without a separate tool to do this. i searched and found something very similar here:[url]i.e. appearance>background>select image>make default>root password but it changes my background only, login window is that old one.

Well, I just got back from the Pepsi Center after watching the Denver Nuggets NBA basketball team look silly against the Dallas Mavericks. 4.5 hours later and I still have a black screen. Was it Einstein who said, "it is insanity to do the same thing, the same way, over and over and expect a different result"? I feel I will been testing that hypothesis soon.
