I recently upgraded my Fedora server from 13 -> 15 and imported all the linux and samba accounts from the old setup. I have the machine operating as a domain server for my network using samba and tbm files for storing user info for samba. I now have all the machine accounts (machine$) show up at the login screen after startup as well as the user accounts. How can I hide these machine accounts like before?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am unable to join a W2K or XP machine to a Samba PDC. I have tried to make this work on both 8.04 LTS and 10.04 LTS without success. Everything else works but I cannot add machine accounts "on the fly" using the "add machine script" as provided in the server guide. I have been able to make it work by enabling the root user but not as a user with admin privileges and sudo in the script. Despite multiple attempts including a new 10.04 install and following the instructions (in the 9.10 server guide) to the letter. Does anyone out there have a samba PDC actually running on Ubuntu and able to add machines on the fly without enabling the root account (i.e using SUDO in the script and a user from the admin group)?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have couple of users in one machine. I can access the /etc/passwd,/etc/shadow and /etc/group files in this box. I have another box. I want to create some user accounts in the second box by just looking in the passwd, shadow and group files in the first box. I would just copy over the corresponding lines into the corresponding for whichever accounts I want to create as new and also change the lines for which I want to update the account information. Is this possible and will also the passwords work fine? Please also let me know there is any good tool for automatically doing this kind of stuff. Both the boxes that I have are Ubuntu machines though one is running Ubuntu 8.04 and the other is 10.04.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHaving logged in (to Fedora 11) with a terminal session, what command do I give to spawn the Gnome GUI desktop environment? Background: I'm running two Fedora boxes: one local, and one at the other end of my building (on fast LAN). I have full control/ownership of both boxes.
On the local box, I log-in to my vanilla F11 build, and I get the Gnome GUI automatically. Then I can open a terminal window, 'ssh -X -l myself remotebox; cinelerra' to run Cinelerra nicely in local desktop windows.
But sometimes I want to see my typical user desktop for the remote box. Now, IF the remote box is ALREADY running Gnome, I can VNC to it, etc. But, once having logged-out of the remote box, VNC closes and won't show me a GUI login page. (BTW: The remote box usually has no monitor, as well as being out of reach. So schlepping over to logon to it is a real pain.) So, here's the thing: I can login (to terminal session) and can bring up programs in local windows. But WHAT program do I launch in order to bring up Gnome??

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a roughly 3-year old PC that I put together from parts (listed below) that has been running great with various flavors of Linux as the sole operating system. It is currently running Ubuntu 10.4. A couple of months ago, it started to have intermittent problems booting. The machine will hang before it gets to the Ubuntu "boot" screen with the dots that show progress as the machine boots. If I look at the power on messages from the BIOS, it fails at different points in the process - sometimes during the memory test, sometimes during the search for IDE drives. It fails about 2 out of every 5 attempts to boot. It sometimes takes 2-3 tries at booting before it actually works. Sometimes when it does boot, the Ethernet jack doesn't work and I see errors in syslog about there not being a carrier.
There are no syslog entries when the machine does not boot.The machine is plugged into a UPS. The UPS indicates that it is running at 13% of capacity at 123V/60Hz. I'm in the US.Once the machine boots normally, it will stay up without issues for days.I've checked the 4GB of RAM (I added 2GB to the original 2GB several months ago) using the memory testing application on the System Rescue CD and no errors were found.I've replaced the motherboard battery, which seemed to help for a few weeks, but then the problem returned.I've checked the hard drive for errors using the SMART diagnostics tool in System -> Administration -> Disk Utility and buy running fsck.The interior of the case is not very dusty and all the fans appear to be working.Are there things I can do to investigate and fix this issue other than starting to replace components - starting with the motherboard and the power supply?The parts of the machine:

I recently made a computer for someone who decided to get a new one instead.. so i thought i'd make a server out of it lk i had it before. so i deleted their account (while on their account) and made me an account.. but now when i try to login to my account it's.. not there? such as when i type my username and pass it says i entered an invalid user/pass. any idea how i can get my user accounts back or atleast logon to this system? i know the root password if there's any way i can login under the root account.

Unfortunately, the account does not seem to be locked or disabled. As root, runninng 'su test2 -c <some-command>' always sucessfully runs <some-command>, and leaves the failed attempt count at 6. /etc/shadow does not have an * or ! anywhere in the encrypted password for the 'test1' user.
What am I doing wrong? I thought that with the max attempts set to 0 in faillog, that the deny= parameter would be used. I thought I should be using su <user> -c <command> from the root account to test if the disable feature is working.
I am kind of new to servers and need to set up a server in the lab (for 4-5 clients). I heard ubuntu has a different server edition. But I already have ubuntu desktop edition so I was wondering if I really have to install a server edition for my limited functionality. If it is not required to install a full blown server and I can do with the one I have, how do I go about creating accounts for remote login?

We want the users (e.g., me) be able to log in to any of the servers with their own account. So, we define the user accounts in a server that runs NIS service, and configure all the other servers as NIS clients. We also defined several groups for different user groups, so some users belong to several groups. All the user information is populated by NIS. This setup is working in Ubuntu 8.04, AMD64.
Now I upgrade the servers to Ubuntu 10.04 64Bit. The problem is, now if I log in to one of the NIS client servers using SSH, my group membership is lost. However, when I log in directly to the server, the group membership is retained. For example, in the /etc/group file, I defined the user tliu as a number of awww group:

I googled a lot but I didn't find anything about this. I have multiple accounts on the same ftp server (the server is not mine I don't access its configuration)
If I write ftp://hostname on the location bar it lets me login, but only allow me to be in only one account at a time. Putting ftp://hostname on the location again just opens the account I logged into and I'm unable to login to the other account to move files between them conveniently.
Is it possible to log into multiple accounts on the same server?
I am using VNC to login to remote machine (vncserver). My question is; How can I login to remote machine (vncserver) through VNC client, without having to login to vncserver first physical. 1) logging into my GoDaddy account keeps displaying the login screen and not my accounts page (yes, I checked the password)
2) creating an account in bugzilla resulted in an "Invalid OpenID transaction" error message instead of a confirmation page
3) the [URL] page popped up a parser error instead of the website.
Midori and Mozilla 3.0.8 work just fine. Does anybody else have problems with mozilla 3.6.6 and above?

I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.
