I have no interest in eye-candy. I want to know how do I disable the boot splashscreen completely. I prefer a text-only boot screen, without any images or animation. NOTE: I am using Ubuntu 10.04 .

I've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.
For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24
It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.
Ubuntu hangs on splash screen when shutting down and restarting after creating startup scrip.
I created the upstart script using the following method:
sudo gedit /etc/init.d/local.autostart "Edit local.autostart"
sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/local.autostart And sudo update-rc.d local.autostart defaults 80. After this ubuntu hangs on the splash screen during shut down. If I remove the script by doing: sudo update-rc.d -f local.autostart remove
Then ubuntu can restart once again.
I don't like the username/password default screen, but i like the ones in /usr/share/backgrounds. I've been trying to change it for few hours. None of the advices on The Net work. I tried:
1) gconf-editor and /apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image gconf-editor /schemas/apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image I set it to picture file path, or splash/filename.png or even copied the desired picture to /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/ubuntu-splash.png - no changes
2) gdmsetup has no such option for me
3) also installed startupmanager - nothing as well.
I upgraded last night from 10.10 to 11.04. Things went well, download was quick, install was fine. I then tried to login, laptop accepted the password, splash screen appeared (jpeg file type); I had downloaded this quite a while ago;and I get the standard icons for KDE, but the laptop now freezes on the last icon, and stays there. The laptop makes the KDE login sounds/theme, but I cannot see the desktop.
I tried to login with out the desktop, which I can do, but I do not know where I have to go to remove the splash screen.
On a site, I ctrl tab through a bunch of tabs, (6-30), but it seems to not be able to click the button until the visual has loaded completely, which means staying on that tab for about a second, slowing me down massivly. On windows, it counts it as clicked even if it hasnt loaded the visual yet.

I know my connection is working fine, as it works perfectly in both Vista and 7. I've tried things such as grep 'Ethernet' /var/log/dmesg, filling in the information into the network settings manually, to no avail.

I'm running 64-bit 11.3 on a Dell 1535 laptop.At lunch today, the system booted-up as normal, then shut-down as normal. A handful of updates were installedduring that time.This evening, however, I arrive at the password splash screen, enter my password, and then the system churns a few seconds before resetting the splash screen. No error message, no "wrong password," just a normal splash screen. I tried going into Xen, the default 11.3 and failsafe -- same thing happened with each. When I navigated to the command line, my password worked fine, both for user and super-user.

I recently Installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my Compaq evo n800c
CPU-Pentium 4
RAM-1GB
HDD-60GB (yeah i know, it's old)
GPU-ATi Radeon Mobility 7500
Installation went fine but when I boot in Ubuntu I get a MS-DOS like workspace that asks for my login and password. When I give it my credentials,it just says welcome in text and thats it. Now if I go into recovery mode and choose any of the options [normal boot/failsafe-graphics boot] the screen goes completely white. I spent hours searching Google for a solution but nothing worked. what is the problem and also what will be the solution for it.

Well, I just got back from the Pepsi Center after watching the Denver Nuggets NBA basketball team look silly against the Dallas Mavericks. 4.5 hours later and I still have a black screen. Was it Einstein who said, "it is insanity to do the same thing, the same way, over and over and expect a different result"? I feel I will been testing that hypothesis soon.
I installed Ubuntu over my windows partition but kept the other NTFS partitions that I use for storage. For some reason GRUB shows up with the option to boot into XP (which isn't there). How do I get rid of the boot menu completely so my computer boots straight into Ubuntu?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI just set up my USB drive with debian wheezy and the first time I boot with it, I was able to choose install options but I shut down my computer and now when I attempt to boot with my USB the screen is black (after esc F9 and choosing the USB) so I tried dd debian.iso a few more times but I am convinced that my USB needs to get completely wiped so that I can put the debian.iso back on and try again.
Any terminal command that can wipe USB drive?
I upgraded to fedora 13 from fedora 11.
i used the preupgrade method.
i am running dual boot with win7 as 2nd OS
after downloading all packages, the preupgrade asked to reboot. after bootloader started, the screen haults and displays "FINDING STORAGE DEVICES" and doesnot go any further.
I hae tried both options of enabling and disabling sata option, but it didn't worked.
Is it possible to duplicate a disk, then boot on a completely different machine? If so, how would you do such a thing?

I switch on the PC and it loads the Grub splash screen. However, it does not automatically boot the top entry after two seconds as it's supposed to and just hangs. I hit enter to boot it and it attempts to but after a few seconds gives me the error "unable to mount file system....a maintenance shell will be started"

Environment: A 32-bit kernel RHEL5.3 system running on a virtual machine. The root(/) filesystem is on an LV.
Issue: Unable to resize the FS after extending the root LV since it is mounted. After extending the LV, online resizing of the FS was not supported and the root filesystem could not be unmounted while it was in use. On rebooting, I got a kernel panic error. I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 on windows7.windows 7 was already installed.I ollowed these steps to install ubuntu 10.04.1)First i made some freespace in hard disk to install ubuntu using windows7 default options(By shrinking).2)I used USB drive to install ubuntu.I made it bootable using unetbootin.3)I followed normal steps install(language,area,keyboard,using manual partition i installed ubuntu in free space,etc).4)I got boot menu when it restarted.PROBLEM isAs long i use only ubuntu (boot into ubuntu --shutdown--boot into ubuntu --shutdown) it works well.

I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

Usually when booting, I get the GRUB 2 menu and I can boot into either Ubuntu or XP.I was playing around with EasyBCD, then after trying to remove it I was unable to boot into Windows, I used a Windows 2000 CD recovery console to fix the MBR (using: fixboot and fixmbr).Now Windows starts up when I power on, but I don't get the grub menu anymore with an Ubuntu option. If I boot from the Ubuntu Live CD and try to mount my Ubuntu partition (/dev/sda5) I get this error:

After installing karmic with Grub2 I am unable to boot into Archlinux partition. Grub2 has removed the last line of the Archlinux boot stanza! It used to read:-

Following the Grub2 tutorials I have tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom as follows:-

But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off
I can only use the Live CD to operate Ubuntu. After typing in the command sudo fdisk -l, I get the following?

Have been running ubuntu for sometime now and love its functionality...However since a recent update have the following issues..When I power on the laptop I get the toshiba logo followed by grub loading with the message ' invalid enviroment block" "unable to load default boot entries". When I then try to run the laptop off a LiveCd, the ubuntu splash screen appears with the loading process bar (horizontal line) displayed..however it then appears to display a black screen with no further activity..Now all of this is via an external monitor as my laptop screen shows no activity right from the very start with just a blank screen....so am really stuck here wondering if its a harware/software issue or a combination of both...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony VPCZ13C5E with Intel Core i7 M640 @ 2.8GHz and Windows 7 Prof 64 bit.
It has 4 x 122GB SSD's in one Volume type Raid 0 using Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
The installation prog did not offer to install alongside an existing (Win 7) system, however after installation I was able still to boot Win 7 from the Grub Menu, but the Linux option just gives the black screen of death.
Booting from the 10.10 LiveCD and running sudo fdisk - l gives "unable to seek on /dev/sda". Also I have had a message "unknown filesystem type 'isw_raid_member' although I have forgotten where that came from!
The LiveCD shows that the filesystem does seem to have installed OK on the ext4 partion of 100Gb which I had kept for it, however it will not boot.
The results of Boot_info_script are shown in the attachment Results.txt
I have tried sudo mount /dev/mapper/isw_dijbjabefg_Volume07 /mnt and it gives no errors.
I then tried sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda which gave no errors but when I reboot and choose Linux the result is still the black screen of death.
I understand that the problem may be one of Ubuntu drivers having to catch up with the latest technology but given that Ubuntu can partition the swap file and the ext4 system I seem to be so close.
Im having a serious issue with booting ubuntu 10.04, the issue being it wont boot up at all, after working so well for so long (i suspect some recent dodgy system updates are responsible) so I decided to just reinstall ubuntu from scratch again but wanted to retrieve some important files from my root device. So I am running the live desktop and I can see my previous filesystems under places but cannot mount or open my original root device where the files I want to recover are located, I receive this error msg:"Unable to mount 77 GB Filesystem.
