I have problem with my Ubuntu,Whenever I ran "sudo update-grub" command it did not detect my Ubuntu kernel nor Windows XP installation on another drive (I installed Ubuntu and Windows in different drive).It just display "Generating grub.cfg" and then "done". I have installed very few OS as a result - Windows in first 80 GB , 2 distros (20 GB each) in next 40 MB which is within the 149 GB. On issue of "update-grub" grub seems to detect all OS and generates grub.cfg. But on boot , one distro does not appear in the menu.

The first time, I simply did a format, I installed fedora and then I reinstalled opensuse (because the usb neither is detect in the installation process, in opensuse).Now, I don't want to do that again.
I just did a clean install and then I updated all packages, among them was the kernel. (Note, I SUPOSE the kernel update is the problem, but quietly can be the kde update, I don't know).The problem itself is opensuse can't detect any usb device, among then are my wireless usb kit (mouse, keyboard). Currently I only have this input device (also a usb mouse, so I can't do anything in opensuse), but I think I will have borrow a ps2 keyboard, at least.The actual kernel is 2.6.31.12-0.2. In the grub, the usb works. When the first loading screen appears, all leds are turned off.I know it is little information, but it's this I can give for now. Let me know if I should give more.

I have wubi installed.I have Windows Vista and Ubuntu in the boot menu. I select "Ubuntu" and that leads me to the GRUB shell. I'm new in linux. It seems that GRUB doesn't detect the kernel. Maybe the file menu.lst has been deleted, or something similar, but I can't make my ubuntu to boot.

View 2 Replies View RelatedRan the updater, went to boot to Win7 to use Photoshop and realized that the grub menu was gone. Ubuntu boots by default now. I tried running "sudo update-grub" at a virtual terminal and while it listed the various linux kernels ok, it then got caught in a loop spitting out some crazy looking errors. I rebooted and Ubuntu came up fine. I tried running "sudo update-grub" again from the gnome terminal and it hangs the whole computer for a few minutes and finally gives me this:

I had Windoze 7 on my wife's laptop, it started running crappy so I install Ubuntu 9.10 via Wubi (so it is not a partitioned dual-boot). I did the latest update, which I think included a kernel update. When I rebooted and chose Ubuntu from the windows dual boot window, instead of loading the GRUB I see an error message flash:

I tried several different commands (you can prompt it to give you available commands by hitting TAB), but it said it couldn't detect a kernel. Also, before I updated, I had tried to install iTunes via these instructions. iTunes seemed to have installed fine, but I hadn't tried it yet.
After upgrading Maverick (perfect!) to Natty, I was unable to boot into anything. (kernel 2.6.38). However, through much PITA, I was able to boot into an older kernel. (2.6.35). I completely removed 2.6.38, rebooted, reinstalled it and ran update-grub. However, 2.6.38 is no longer available no matter how many times I run update-grub, and the only option left is 2.6.35. In my humble opinion, the Natty upgrade experience is rubbish. (blank screen, total PC hangs, boots into a blank screen with only a blinking cursor, NVIDIA official driver not working, bootable only into older kernels etc.)

at the end of every kernel image line, and it works ok. The only problem is that every kernel update overrides the grub.cfg and therefore I have to reedit the file over and over again. So the question is, where could I put the mentioned kernel startup parameter, so that it doesn't get lost on every kernel update.

To find the appropriate firmware without knowing the make or brand of your wireless chip, you can use the command:

But apparently debian package do not offer this useful tool, well, certainly for sidux exclusively.

I'm running a dual boot Vista/Ubuntu Jaunty. I made some changes to the grab menu so that my windows OS would appear at the top of the list .I know I could have changed the default so that Vista would have been highlighted instead of Jaunty. But the reason I moved it to the top is because when I do a kernel update, I would still want Vista to be the default booting OS. Anyways, after the update my Vista OS disappeared from grub. It didn't get deleted because the Vista partition is still accessible from Jaunty. Can anyone help me boot into Vista and preferably make it the default OS even after a Kernel update? I attached part of my menu.lst .

I used the update manager to update the kernel and whatever the other recommended updates were yesterday. I shut the computer down overnight and now when i try to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 i get a basic grub shell and when i try commands like "boot" it tells me there is no kernel loaded. I installed Ubuntu with Wubi so it is a dual boot system.
I've tried to access the Linux volume with a live OpenSuse 11 CD but there is no device to mount. It sees the entire hard-drive as if it hasn't been partitioned. I don't necessarily need to fix the installation. I just need to get my files back.
I run Ubuntu and yesterday the update manager downloaded a new kernel I think. It asked me to restart. I unlike before where when I select Ubuntu at boot up time and it just goes into it I am getting this black screen called GNU GRUB. What do I do here? It's been hanging like this for hours today, preventing me from getting any of the pending upgrades. I've cancelled it several times, deleted the dpkg lock files and tried it again only to have it hang all over again.
I just got a laptop (DELL PP06S) from a friend set up on kubuntu. He told me to download and run the updates packages if I had time. So so did I and now the computer stops on an error at boot and I can't log in at all to type any command. The error message coming up is:

From my understanding these are the new and older kernels, is that right? I had to do the updates in 3 times so I guess the kernel from before then isn't in the list anymore. Every one of them shows the same error message and no way to get a console. So I can't type any command. Though, I found out that I can type commands in the GRUB, is there any way to change the kernel from the GRUB? If so what would be the commands?
I have two partitions with Debian on them. One is straight Debian and I installed Grub to the MBR. Another is Linux Mint LMDE and I installed (or so I think) grub to the root partition. Mint is not listed when Debian boots up and there's no entry for it. What did I do wrong? I'm not familiar with Grub 2. Is there some 'update grub' command that I need to use? Why doesn't this get configured when the other OS is installed? Or is this just how it works? I suppose grub will work for the other OS. If I 'update' Grub with my Debian system, it will "detect" the new OS, maybe? I wanted the current Grub in my Debian install to handle everything since the Mint install isn't my main system and just experimental for me.

I have a new acer machine which runs fine on 10.10 mythbuntu desktop livecd. Install seemed fine.
Then I ran an update and on reboot I get a kernel panic error. Research on this reveals it as a very deep subject which can consume many hours, so I opted to reinstall.
This time with ubuntu 10.10. I've tried different CDs, liveusb. Same errors.
So, the question is this - where do I concentrate my efforts - somewhere ubuntu doesn't like this machine, or grub. Does a reinstall overwrite the grub install too? Or do I have a bogus grub install I need to purge before I will get anywhere.

I recently updated, and now when I boot it only goes as far as grub command line. There is no grub menu. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with only Ubuntu installed -- no dual boot, no weird partition schemes. Originally installed Ubuntu 09.04 on this computer, upgraded a couple times and it currently has (had) 10.04.1 LTS running. The update should have upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-23 to 2.6.32-24. I can boot with a live CD and mount the hard drive. The drive seems fine, so it appears to be simply a grub config issue. I have to boot with live cd to get online to check for potential solutions. So I'm taking some notes on how to use grub.

I'm using 2 cloned disks with CentOs5.3 and I need to be able to control which one is booted. I can specify which disk in the BIOS but after stage 2 it is always running from disk 2. When I have puppy linux on one disk and CentOs on the other I can boot off of either as selected by the system BIOS so the BIOS is not the issue. I think it is how the root option is passed in the kernel command in the grub.conf.

I think when the OS searches for the /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 share is locates 2 since the disks are clones and uses the last one found. On information I have found for the kernel command and the root option it appears CentOs uses it differently. CentOs uses a volume name as specified /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 instead of a partition designator /dev/hda2. Is there a different way to specify /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 in CentOS for the root option for the kernel command of grub.conf?
I upgraded from Meerkat to Narwhal. After all the files have been downloaded and installed it rebooted. Once it rebooted it went straight to the GRUB command line. After couple of hours of research, I ended up at

I did what it said and it got me into Ubuntu. Nice! It asked me to: After successfully booting into the system the user should run sudo update-grub I did. I have manually added an entry for Ubuntu in my grub menu, using Yast. But every time the kernel is updated, this entry disappears. On the other hand, the one for Windows, that was added during OpenSuse's installation, is still there. So how can I keep this entry for Ubuntu ?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI compiled the 2.6.31.6 kernel and <insert drumroll> it boots!(my first kernel roll, I'm kind of shocked actually) That's the good news. The bad news is that my NVIDIA drivers are gone in the wind. That's not entirely true as I can still boot into the old kernel and startx. Is there a way to download the driver using the command line for reinstall?
