View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is probably a dumb question but I can't find out whether I have a 32 or 64 bit machine. Here's uname -a
[Linux Flow 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.i686 #1 SMP Wed Sep 15 03:33:58 UTC 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux]
i was trying to crate a script to show the last time iptables had seen a given IP address (contained in the ipt_recent kernel hook -- my user-defined table name is 'iplist'). The ipt_recent table yields the following information (IPv4 addresses masked for paranoid reasons):
Code:
src=www.xxx.yyy.zzz ttl: 114 last_seen: 9355600126 oldest_pkt: 1 9355600126
src=www.xxx.yyy.zzz ttl: 109 last_seen: 10020040763 oldest_pkt: 1 10020040763
src=www.xxx.yyy.zzz ttl: 111 last_seen: 8106864077 oldest_pkt: 3 8103790647, 8106530788, 8106864077
src=www.xxx.yyy.zzz ttl: 109 last_seen: 9937861664 oldest_pkt: 1 9937861664
src=www.xxx.yyy.zzz ttl: 115 last_seen: 8244867102 oldest_pkt: 1 8244867102
The attempted command used was:
Code:
cat /proc/net/ipt_recent/iplist | awk '{print ($1 ,system("date -d @" $5));}'
Such command yields the following (I'm willing to live with the trailing zero):
Code:
Wed Jun 20 05:48:46 EDT 2266
src=www.xxx.yyy.zzz 0
[code]....
I presume the ipt_recent table uses the standard UNIX epoch timestamp. Am I using the date command syntax incorrectly, is this a 32-bit vs 64-bit break, or it is something else? Please note that I am using FC10, and I have double-checked my system clock settings (both BIOS and OS). The system has only been running during 2009 (no reboot yet).

For the last couple of days I've been trying to install Fedora 11 x86_64 without success on my new machine, specs below. Intel Core i7-920 2.66Ghz MSI X58 Pro 7200 SATA Drive (can't remember the make) 6GB RAM So first off I tried install the 32bit live cd and that worked without any problems and installed fine. Only problem is I need access to the full 6GB of RAM so I really need to switch to the 64bit version.
I downloaded the full x86_64 install DVD and burnt it off. Rebooted and began the installation. It was going fine until it started installing the packages. The install seemed to freeze, although the mouse would still move. I left this for 10 minutes just incase it kick started again, but there was no HD activity or DVD activity so I gave up and rebooted to try again. The next time I started the install I had problems with it freezing while partitioning. I was beginning to think something was up with my hard drive or the drivers for the hard drives controller weren't working correctly (could still be the case).
After about 20 attempts with it freezing at various points I gave up and decided to try the x86_64 live cd. This booted with no problems so I started the install from the desktop. First thing I noticed was a kernel error pop up after I started the drive partitioning. Something about dereferencing a pointer in the kernel (0x20) (sorry no additional info at the moment, if needed please ask). This got me thinking the kernels not playing nice with my setup. However, it let me continue and copied the live image onto the hard drive. Then it started going through the post installation steps and this is where I got another kernel error (again I can get this if needed) and the window froze and all activity seemed to stop again. Has anyone got any ideas what could be causing these problems. I've also tried a CentOS 5.2 x86_64 version I had lying around and this had similar problems (although this does use anaconda as the installer too).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a roughly 3-year old PC that I put together from parts (listed below) that has been running great with various flavors of Linux as the sole operating system. It is currently running Ubuntu 10.4. A couple of months ago, it started to have intermittent problems booting. The machine will hang before it gets to the Ubuntu "boot" screen with the dots that show progress as the machine boots. If I look at the power on messages from the BIOS, it fails at different points in the process - sometimes during the memory test, sometimes during the search for IDE drives. It fails about 2 out of every 5 attempts to boot. It sometimes takes 2-3 tries at booting before it actually works. Sometimes when it does boot, the Ethernet jack doesn't work and I see errors in syslog about there not being a carrier.
There are no syslog entries when the machine does not boot.The machine is plugged into a UPS. The UPS indicates that it is running at 13% of capacity at 123V/60Hz. I'm in the US.Once the machine boots normally, it will stay up without issues for days.I've checked the 4GB of RAM (I added 2GB to the original 2GB several months ago) using the memory testing application on the System Rescue CD and no errors were found.I've replaced the motherboard battery, which seemed to help for a few weeks, but then the problem returned.I've checked the hard drive for errors using the SMART diagnostics tool in System -> Administration -> Disk Utility and buy running fsck.The interior of the case is not very dusty and all the fans appear to be working.Are there things I can do to investigate and fix this issue other than starting to replace components - starting with the motherboard and the power supply?The parts of the machine:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm not a Fortran coder but I need to call the sub-routine ADAPT.f from a c code.This subroutine calculates a multiple integral of a given function.My problem is that the c code works with no problem in a 32 bit machine but it does not in a 64 bit machine, and the problem seems to be related to adapt, which calculations gives a NA rather than the result of integration.Since fortran is quite obscure for me, I don't know why is this happening. Maybe I should change some data type (from real to double), but I'm not sure. Does anyone have a clue?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Karmic 64 bit installed, originally with 2GB of memory. The motherboard will take up to 16GB, and I decided to double to 4GB. When I put in the 4 memory sticks (1GB each) and reboot, it gets past grub2, to the ubuntu "circle" symbol, the screen blacks out and that is it. No desktop, no further action that I can tell from the box, just a black screen. The video feed to the monitor, from what I get with the power light is gone and no activity on the drive.
If I take out one of the memory sticks, it boots happily up with 3GB and runs fine. Put the 4th back in, same behavior. I tried swapping out the old memory, putting in the 2 new sticks, everything works fine. Add in the other two (the old ones), the problem shows again. I thought I might be the last memory slot, so I removed the one from the 3rd slot, works fine. All in all, it works fine with 3GB, but hangs on boot with the 4GB.

I have a new 64 bit workstation (Dell Vostro i7) which I usually keep running for extended periods (read; days and weeks). I have realized that the system completely ignores when I insert a USB stick (LaCie 8Gb USB Key). By ignore, I mean it doesn't get mounted, and /media/ is empty. Interesting enough if I go into YAST and probe for Hardware Information, I find my USB stick there under the USB section. There is no specific entry for the key in /etc/fstab by the way, as far as I know I don't need to specify how a USB stick should be mounted. Auto-mount, when it actually works, is perfectly fine.

Anyone successfully installed AIR and iPlayer on F11?
I've switched to 32 bit Adobe flash, tried Autoten for AIR and Dangermouse's advice for iPlayer: url.html but it's not working, and trying to install AIR from url results in an endless busy downloading graphic .
I assume my problem is a lack of required packages, though I searched the repositories using YUM extender for the packages listed here: url.html and can't see them either as installed or available.
