Ubuntu :: Get The Version Of GRUB / GRUB-legacy To Boot Any Recent Windows 64 Beyond XP (Vista Or 7)
Dec 20, 2010I've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.
No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts,experiences, similar issues - whatever?

Apr 1, 2010I tried looking this up. It seems that in Ubuntu, you need to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst. I tried that, and the file is not present in Debian "Squeeze". (Just trying it out on a different PC, In case you are confused by my other thread regarding Lenny) So what do I need to do to change the default OS to boot?

Nov 29, 2014Basically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...
I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...
I can not boot from cd or usb!

Jan 4, 2011Is there a way to make a dialog with zenity which would show an updating list? Zenity does it with progress, but I didn't figure out if it's possible to do it with the list. I.e. for example, I want to monitor something, and update the dialog with new list periodically. Is it even possible? zenity can wait for data from stdin, but it just adds stuff to the list. May be there are some control sequences which clear the list in the dialog?
For example:
{ echo "Foo"; sleep 2; echo "Bar"; } | zenity --list --title='Dynamic list?' --text='Some data' --column='values'
How can I instead of adding Bar, replace the Foo with it?

Jun 17, 2010All I want is for my bootloader to show "Ubuntu" & "Windows XP" which are the only 2 OS's I have installed (dual booting). At the moment it shows Windows XP, Ubuntu, Ubuntu recovery mode & like 2 more.. which are also Ubuntu & recovery mode. I've never selected the other Ubuntu ones, only the first one. So, how can I remove the ones I don't want to show on the list.

Jan 12, 2010I installed The latest and greatest Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and everything is clicking along just fine except one annoying feature that I am unable to get my finger on.I have quite a list of choices at bootup. I updated a couple version of the kernel and there is this memtest thing...twice... Then my family also uses windows 7 so that is the default at the bottom of the list set to boot after 3 seconds to keep the nagging to a minimum.
I would like to know the cleanest and safest way to have the list only show the current kernel option and the windows 7 option if this is even advised. Would it be best to have a backup (Previous kernel) in the list? *just in case* Is it safe to seek out the old kernel by version number and uninstall? Will this remove the entries in the list? Is editing the list and leaving other options installed wise? Is there a gui grub2 configuration tool with these advanced options? I have StartUp-Manager, but there is no options to change the list.
Im looking for the best/safest option to get this done because I now see another kernel update image in the update manager and it is going to increase the size of my list once I find the time to update. Im a bit green and scared I will ruin a good thing here. Everything is working perfectly so far and I realize one click and it could all be over.

Mar 9, 2010I'm currently running Karmic 9.10 in dual boot with Windows 2000. My computer has automatically updated and installed kernels 2.6.31-17, -19 and -20 (They show up in Synaptic as installed).
However, the newest kernel choice in my GRUB menu is 2.6.31-16-generic (followed by -15 and -14). These all start without any errors.
Question: Why haven't the newer updates shown up in GRUB for booting purposes?
Could it be a question that I didn't answer correctly some time back about accepting or not accepting an update or change in GRUB?
How can this be changed? The new kernels do not show up in Start-Up Manager either.

Debian Configuration :: Grub Does Not Show Fedora15
Jun 16, 2011I have just installed and enabled plymouth, and during the process I had to update Grub. Something got messed up and I have the following issues:
1. Grub does not show Fedora15
2. Windows7 loader is listed as Windows Vista loader
I cannot log into Fedora15, though I can log into Windows... Please guide to the proper resolution of the above issue.

Sep 27, 2010I just installed Kubuntu 10.04 dual booted with Windows XP Home. It worked OK until I tried to reboot. Then, when the GRUB boot list came up, there was no response to the keyboard cursors or other keys, so I was unable to select any OS other than the default. Right now, I can't access Windows at all.
Any solution to this? One person suggested enabling USB in BIOS, but I found nothing relevant there. Another suggested I use a PS2 keyboard, which I did, but no change...same problem.
If I can't get a solution to that, how do I change the GRUB configuration to make Windows the default? 10.04 doesn't have the same kind of GRUB boot config file that I recall using the last time I worked with Kubuntu, way back around version 6 0r 8.
Debian :: Grub Does Not List Windows When Booting
Jul 14, 2011I have recently (today) installed Debian on a logical partition of my master hard disk, but when booting it will just list Debian or Debian recovery not listing windows at all. I know there may be some that will think that is a good thing but I do need access to windows.
I had a root about and found this thread which I thought might solve the problem as it is similar:

But when I got to the part where I entered the command su -c "nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg" the terminal prompt changed to a > and I felt a little unsure of what I was doing as I would have prefered to have opened the grub.cfg file as a text file, as it is I recieved a syntax error.
As you can probably tell Linux to me appears to be a bit of a black art, but I am enthusiastic none the less. I will list the output of the terminal window so that you may see the steps I have taken.

I dont know if i have grub or grub2
My machine boots to the grub boot menu list but its all of my old kernels that have been removed from 9.04
I have a menu list in my ubuntu boot/grub partition but they all point to 9.04, i have backups but they are the same 9.04
I have no grub2 menu list in etc/default
Can i just edit the menu list in boot/grub directory to look for my latest kernel and how should i insert it sudo?

I say yes, but after restarintg, squeeze doesnot appear in grub.
