Ubuntu :: Splashscreen Will Not Move/change So Cannot Use/see The DTE

Jul 22, 2011

I upgraded last night from 10.10 to 11.04. Things went well, download was quick, install was fine. I then tried to login, laptop accepted the password, splash screen appeared (jpeg file type); I had downloaded this quite a while ago;and I get the standard icons for KDE, but the laptop now freezes on the last icon, and stays there. The laptop makes the KDE login sounds/theme, but I cannot see the desktop.

I tried to login with out the desktop, which I can do, but I do not know where I have to go to remove the splash screen.

Ubuntu :: Hangs On Splashscreen During Shutdown?

Jun 11, 2010

Ubuntu hangs on splash screen when shutting down and restarting after creating startup scrip.

I created the upstart script using the following method:

sudo gedit /etc/init.d/local.autostart "Edit local.autostart"

sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/local.autostart And sudo update-rc.d local.autostart defaults 80. After this ubuntu hangs on the splash screen during shut down. If I remove the script by doing: sudo update-rc.d -f local.autostart remove

Then ubuntu can restart once again.

I don't like the username/password default screen, but i like the ones in /usr/share/backgrounds. I've been trying to change it for few hours. None of the advices on The Net work. I tried:

1) gconf-editor and /apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image gconf-editor /schemas/apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image I set it to picture file path, or splash/filename.png or even copied the desired picture to /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/ubuntu-splash.png - no changes

OpenSUSE Install :: 1.3 Splashscreen Won't Accept Password?

Jan 3, 2011

I'm running 64-bit 11.3 on a Dell 1535 laptop. At lunch today, the system booted-up as normal, then shut-down as normal. A handful of updates were installedduring that time. This evening, however, I arrive at the password splash screen, enter my password, and then the system churns a few seconds before resetting the splash screen. No error message, no "wrong password," just a normal splash screen. I tried going into Xen, the default 11.3 and failsafe -- same thing happened with each. When I navigated to the command line, my password worked fine, both for user and super-user.

Fedora Installation :: Black Screen Displays After NVidia Splashscreen

Dec 28, 2009

Issue: Black screen displays after nVidia splashscreen.

History: I performed a clean install of Fedora 12. I performed NVidia driver "GEForce 4 and below" install for a PAE kernel as found here:[URL]..I kept a log of each command in the order performed:

[Code]...

Well, I just got back from the Pepsi Center after watching the Denver Nuggets NBA basketball team look silly against the Dallas Mavericks. 4.5 hours later and I still have a black screen. Was it Einstein who said, "it is insanity to do the same thing, the same way, over and over and expect a different result"? I feel I will been testing that hypothesis soon.

Ubuntu :: Panel Applet - If Right-click Doesn't Include Move - How To Move That Icon

I have two applets on my Gnome panel -- NetworkManager Applet 0.8, and Klipper (it works better than Glipper) -- that I want to move.

HOWEVER, right-clicking the panel icons does not enable me to move these applets, as follows:

- NetworkManager Applet 0.8 does not include a Move item in its list of options.

- Klipper displays a long list of Klipper options but no Move option.

How I can move these items to new locations on the Gnome panel?

Ubuntu :: Graphics - Change To A Warped Mix Of Colors And Pixels When Change The Background Image

May 19, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix on my Gateway LT3103u. I noticed shortly into using it that it has a graphics bug every so often. Especially when I change the background image. Everything will change to a warped mix of colors and pixels. Everything is affected. My mouse, the bar at the top of the screen, text and all. My netbook runs on an AMD Athlon 64-bit processor with ATI Radeon X1270 HyperMemory up to 256MB graphics.

So far I have tried reinstalling, and even the 64bit desktop edition which had the same problem. Ive noticed that it freaks out when i scroll too quick, when changing background images, and on certain websites. Then other times its completely random. When it happens it looks similar to these: [URL]

Ubuntu :: Change File Permissions To Change Background Screen?

Feb 21, 2010

I'm new to Ubuntu Linux but have many years on windows platform. Please can someone help me with how to change the following items.

No.1 I would like to change the HORRIBLE!! YAK!! brown background color behind the word Ubuntu in the start up screen when the machine loads up (before the login). I have located the image file for this which I have found to be: /usr/share/images/xsplash/bg_2560x1600. jpg but the OS says that root is the owner and that I don't have permission to change this. So how can I change this for a color I do like.

No.2 I would also like to change the login dialogue screen style. I know this is possible but again I'm fumbling to see how I can do this. I have tried with the start up manager but every attempt fails, the settings don't take. Once again I suspect permissions are at the bottom of the problem?

No.3 Would like to have a colorful splash screen image on boot up, I've managed to remove the old one (small white 3 ring ubuntu logo on black background) but havent been able to install or replace with a new one. Its been incredibly frustrating, I'm feel sure I'm missing something simple here. Wondering if its permissions yet again?

Anyone who can offer help on any of the above, guidance or advise me would be much appreciated. Please bear in mind that I'm still very much feeling my way with Linux so keep it simple.

Ubuntu :: Can't Change Pointer 10.10 / Compiz Wont Change?

Feb 23, 2011

I had issues with changing the pointer when compiz was active in ubuntu 10.10. it would not change when on the desktop, only when hovering over a window.I solved this issue by doing the following:

Hit alt f2 and enter-> gconf-editor

Then goto-> /->apps->compiz->general->allscreens->options

Then in "cursor_themes" type in the name of the pointer theme(Eg. DMZ-White)

This should resolve the issue with compiz.I am not going to go over that here.Oh yea don't forget to logout/login or press ALT F2 and enter compiz - -replace to refresh the pointer...

Ubuntu :: Move /var And /tmp To One Partition?

Mar 24, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server on a flash based USB memory stick, so I wanted to move /var and /tmp to a partition on a hard drive (one partition with both /var and /tmp and symlinks from / to those). I read this guide here [URL].. but it failed after restarting the server. I then found out that ubuntu must have /var/run on the root file system [URL].. so that was why it did not work.

My workaround for this was to create /var and /var/run on the root file system, mount my partition to /var and then symlink /tmp to /var/temp. It now works as I wanted, both /var and /tmp on the same partition. But is there a better way to solve this? Can there be any problems with /tmp->/var/temp?

Ubuntu :: HDD Upgrade - How To Move

Aug 7, 2010

I have never done such a thing, with a windows box nor linux, but i just got a new hdd. And at the moment i have 2 HDD in my pc adding up to 1tb. a 750 and 250.

Just got a 350 from a friend and now i dont know what to do. This case can only fit 2 drives, so i want to get ridd of the 250 in exchange for the 350. Only problem is, i have a dual boot, windows on the 750 (bad idea -_-) and ubuntu on the 250. I need to move ubuntu from the 250 to the 350. I was hoping i could keep all my files intact and what not, maybe clone the drive? but then how do i compensate for the added memory?

If worst comes to worst, ill just wipe the 250, and reinstall ubuntu on the 350. only problem with this method is i dont know whats going to happen with the grub configuration. Will it still be fine with grub? or do i have to reinstall or modify grub?

Ubuntu :: Move /usr To Zfs-fuse?

Aug 24, 2010

I thought the system was supposed to get through the early stages of booting without /usr so I moved it to a filesystem on my zfs-fuse pool, and created a symlink from /usr to /media/zfs/usr

On reboot it would not boot. Hitting esc to see the messages showed network-manager, avahi-daemon, and squid all failing to start (the first two before the ZFS mount success message came up, the other one after). The system was doing nothing.

Somehow, however, the system was still able to boot into the root shell of recovery mode, which I used to out /usr back on the main ext4 partition and now it's booting fine.

Should this be something I'm able to do? Are there specific parts of /usr I need to leave? Should I try to figure out how to make ZFS mounts happen even sooner than whatever the zfs-fuse package defaults to?
