hey guys i am trying "again" to dual boot on my gaming computer, and i am failing miserably. i boot the cd, it detects the hard drive i set the partitions and press finish and either on the partitioning or the files copying the installer crashes. what can i do to make it work with raid 0 (nvidia chipset).
View 5 RepliesI am trying to install KUbuntu and the installer is struck at "copying files." The first time the installation went fine besides grub not booting properly. So I went ahead and tried to reinstall Kubuntu and now the installer hangs at 15-23% at copying files. I've already erased a bunch of partitions and told the installer to install the OS on "the largest contiguous free space" and it still hangs. To be honest I haven't allowed to it hang at 23 percent for more than one hour.The CD is not the issue as I've tried both Kubuntu and Ubuntu installers with the same result.

Unfortunately that is when my real problems began. I have tried using various CD.s with Ubuntu 10.04 desktop and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook remix.
Both give the same error - The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk: [Errno 5] Input/output error
This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.
I tried using an SD card to install - that also gave errors. I tried installing Windows as much as I hate it and, annoyingly, that installed without any problems whatsoever. Then I tried using the Alternate Install disc. That gave me a different error - did everything and apparently installed a "basic" system but failed to install software. Struggled to find an answer to that. How I can get Ubuntu 10.04 back on my netbook. As it stands at the moment I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that I will have to install Windows or buy a new netbook - this seems preposterous!
I have seen that many people have this error and so it seems like some sort of bug. The only clue I had is that I did succeed in installing Ubuntu on my second 32 GB SD (the netbook has two (an 8 GB and a 32 GB). Unfortunately this SD appears much slower than the first so I erased it and went back to trying to get it on the 8 GB as before. Now it won't install on either - gives the same error. I do not believe that both my SD.s can be faulty and so I can only assume that somehow they both need erasing or formatting or something before I can reinstall.
I have about 170 Gigabyte free at the last of my hard. I have windows 7 and suse linux installed on the machine. When I try to install ubunto. I start to create the partitions manually because I want to add it as a third operating system on my PC. Anyway I create the 4 partitions /boot - / - /var - /home. Automatically it choose to install the boot on sda not sda 9 as the /boot was sda9. I click install.

I burn another cd and do the same ... the same problem.
I try to create the partitions at the end of the hard disk not the beginning although I am sure that there is no error in the hardware but the same message. Lastly I change the boot to be created in sda 9. The same problem, when I do everything. I download Linux mint another operating system and do the same points. The same error message appeared by the way the boot is being damaged after restarting and I have to fix it from suse linux cd.

Before I try changing CD drives, re-formatting the hard drive (again), or cleaning the CD drive, I must add that Xubuntu did open. I got rid of all traces of the previous operating system (WinME), and Xubuntu seems to work pretty well. The installation stopped at 41% of copying files. Should I aim for a finished installation or is this fine?

The only possibility of those is the CD being bad. But I've used it before, recently, and it was fine. I will burn another one from my other computer and try, but it shouldn't be doing this.
Question: If I plan to only use Ubuntu on this computer (no dual boot) should I make the /,swap and /home partitions all Primary or some logical, or does it even matter?
I have installed Ubuntu on my m1530 since 8.04 and currently dual boot Win7 and 10.10. I would like to dual boot on my PC, but I have run into a problem. I am not a pro at Ubuntu, but this problem I can not solve by reading forums like I have in the past.
I realize this is a common problem, but I have noticed people having success.
I have a M4A87TD EVO MB with two Seagate drives in Raid 0. (The raid controller is a SB850 on that MB) I use the raid utility to create the raid drive that Windows7x64 uses. I have 2 partitions and 1 unused space. Partition 1 is Windows, partition 2 is for media, and the remaining unused space is for Ubuntu.
I am running ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 off a Cruzer 16GB flash drive that was installed via Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.4.
My problem like so many others is that when I load into Ubuntu, gparted detects two separate hard drives instead of the raid. I read that this is because kpartx is not installed on 10.10. I then went in LiveCD mode and downloaded kpartx from Synaptic Manager. Gparted still reported two drives. I opened terminal and run a few commands with kpartx. I received an error. (Forgive me I didn't write it down, but I believe it said something about a communication error. I will try again later and see.)
Currently I am reflashing the Cruzer with a persistence of 4GB. I am not familiar with this process, but I understand that my LiveCD boot will save information I download to it. I decided to try this method because I was going to install kpartx and reboot to see if this made a difference.
I am looking for any suggestions on a different method or perhaps someone to tell me that the raid controller or some hardware isn't supported. I did install ubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64 on my flash drive, but fail to get past detecting my CD-ROM drive since it's not plugged in. If this method is viable, I will plug it in. I also watched the ..... video were a guy creates Raid 0 with the alternated CD, but it wasn't a dual boot and didn't use a raid controller from a MB.
At the end of this week I'm going to get a new PC. It will have a 80GB SSD ( 2.5" SSD INTEL X25-M 80GB) and a 1TB HD. I want to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on it.The SSD will be for fast bootup and should also contain the core OS stuff. I will partition it for both Windows 7 and Linux but I'm not certain how big I should make both partitions. I was considering going with 60GB for Windows and 20GB for Linux but is that big enough for keeping the core Ubuntu on?

There is a partition and it has 10 GB (Primary Partition) unlike C it is 100% free and another has 15 MB also free and it is called the EFI System Partition.So to dual boot, how should I prepare the partitions? Do I need make a new partition in what is now drive C?

I'm running OS X 10.5.8 and Ubuntu 9.04 on a Macbook 4,1, and I want to remove the Ubuntu partition so I can free up hard drive space. However, the linux swap partition is located in between the OS X and Ubuntu partitions, and GParted won't let me remove it when I boot from an Ubuntu Live disk, and OS X Disk Utility can't affect it either. I followed the dual booting instructions here, and I pretty much just want to undo all of it and get back to an OS X only machine.

I used to be a good computer tech, but now, because of my memory problems, I don't remember how to do a lot of things with a computer.I'm seeking assistance (not 24/7 help or hand-holding)to help me reformat,partition, and set-up a dual-boot for both WIN 2000 Pro and Ubuntu Linux to operate programs where I can use my Amateur (Ham) Radio in digital modes (PSK-31, PSK-64, BPSK, cw, etc). I am attempting to install the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 10.10 on my computer.I'm intending to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu with one hard drive that came factory partitioned into two drives. Win7 was installed first.Ok, onto the issue. The Install is going well until I get to the Allocate Drive Space form (so almost right off the bat). I first created a swap partition within my "second drive" (really just a partition of the larger drive). This stalled out and I had to exit setup and restart the computer. Booted into Win7 to be safe and Win only recognizes the First Drive and no longer the second drive. So, I boot up the Ubuntu Install CD and get back to the allocate drive space form I see I have a (linux-swap) drive with the same gb space as before.
So, from here I create a partition within the "second drive" 20gb of ext4 type space. This does not stall out and creates a partition of 20 gb. But, now it says I have 175 gb of "Unusable" space. This is very unsettling and using the "revert" button does nothing.How do I fix this space so I can finish the install?[URL]
I have a 2 year old Acer laptop running Windows 7 from a 160 GB HDD. This is currently divided into C:/ for Windows and D:/ for data with two small hidden partitions for Acer Utilities and Windows reinstall.
I ran OpenSUSE v11.2 from a LiveCD and decided I would like to dual boot it with W7. I downloaded the full 4.2 GB OpenSUSE Install DVD and ran that as recommended. All went well until I reached the Partitioning stage where the Intelligent Partitioner refused to offer any option other than delete all the Windows partitions and create a single extended partition for OpenSUSE.
It offers (without option):
Delete Windows /dev/sda2 70 GB impossible to resize (25 Gb are free under W7)
Delete Windows /dev/sda3 70 GB although 40 GB are free
Create Extended /dev/sda2 140 GB
Create swap /dev/sda5 2 GB even though I have 4 GB RAM
Create Root /dev/sda6 20 GB ext4
Create Home /dev/sda7 115 GB ext4
The whole HDD is currently formatted to NTFS as a factory default.
Is their a way to resize sda2 and/or sda3 to install OpenSUSE as their is lots of free space available for this installation?
My current laptop (purchased off of a local computer store owner, I think it's brand is generic but it is called a SPARTAN for those that need to know) is running windows 7 professional and I am attempting to install Slackware 13.0. Now, I did the whole partitioning thing under windows (computer>manage>etc.) but for some reason whenever I boot the DVD to install it seems like it cannot read my hard drive. I then went directly into setup > target partition and I notice that it is reading my hard drive because my two partitions that windows exists on is there.
Now, what is says when I use cfdisk is that it seems to be reading the DVD and it gives me an error saying that the disk is read-only (which I see why). Is there a step I'm skipping while preparing the hard drive while under windows or is there just something wrong with my computer completely? I tried to read the readme and attempted to use fdisk but it's really confusing for me considering I have never used terminal type code before (except random DOS commands). I can get it installed in virtualbox but I just can't install it on the main computer. If it's worth mentioning, I downloaded the DVD ISO off of the website.
I have a problem trying to install CentOS 5 as a dual-boot with my Windows 7. Using Windows tools, I shrunk my main partition and created about a 100GB of unallocated free space. Then, I restarted my computer, booting from the CentOS dvd, but when choosing "Use free space on selected drives and create default layout" option during installation, I get an error saying that partitions couldn't be allocated as primary partitions and that there is not enough space left to create partition for /boot.

Now i'm trying to do the same with my netbook (eee pc 1000he), and the existing partitions look funny:
How should I change this to prepare for installing Ubuntu? Can I just install to the unallocated space on the extended partition? I don't need optimal efficiency here, I just need to know where to install Ubuntu for a workable dual boot.
It's confusing to me that Windows is on an extended partition, and also that /dev/sda2 has the boot flag (this drive contains nothing but two undeletable folders titled "amd 64" and "i386"). This set-up is the result of a Windows re-install at a sketchy computer shop.
My brother has been a long time Linux fan, and has been getting on me forever to dual-boot my computer with Linux. So I finally got around to it and dual-booted it with a partition, and it works just fine, problem is all my stuff is on the Windows 7 partition of the hard-drive. I hear the big Linux feature is being able to take everything from the Windows side of the computer and transferring it over to the Linux side...
My only question is, where would I find that feature? I browsed around the administration system capabilities but couldn't find anything related to the partition, so I could use a little guidance in finding the feature, or whether I need to download a program to use it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIt's been a real battle, but I am getting close.I won't go into all the details of the fight that I have had, but I've almost made it to the finish line. Here is the set up. ASUS Z8PE-D18 mother board 2 CPU, 8 Gig Ram. I recently added an OCZ Agility SSD, defined a raid 1 virtual disk on the 1 terabyte WD HDD drives, which will holds all of my user data, the SSD is for executables.The bios is set to AHCI. Windows 7 installed fine, recognizes the raid VD just fine.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 by first booting into try and mode, then opening a terminal and issuing a "sudo dmraid -ay" command. Then performing the install. I told it to install the raid components, and told it to let me specify the partitions manually. When setting up the partitions, I told it to use the free space I set aside on the SSD from the Windows 7 install as ext4 and to mount root there. Ubuntu installed just fine, grub2 comes up just fine, and Windows 7 boots with out a hitch, recognizing the mirrored partition as I indicated previously. When I tell grub to boot linux however, it pauses and I get the "no block devices found" message. It will then boot, but it does not recognize the raid array. After Ubuntu starts up I can run "dmraid -ay" and it recognizes the raid array, but shows the two component disks of the raid array as well. It will not allow the component disks to be mounted, but they show up which is annoying. (I can live with that if I have to)
I have fixed a similar problem before by setting up a dmraid script in /etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top ... following the instructions found at the bottom of this blog:[URL].. To recap: My problem is that after grub2 fires up Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (Lucid Lynx), it pauses, and I get "no block devices found" It then boots but does not recognize the raid array untill I manually run "dmraid -ay". I've hunted around for what to do but I have not found anything. It may be some timing issue or something, but I am so tired of beating my head against this wall.
I am about to get a new laptop here soon and I was planning a dual boot like I have on my current laptop (Win7 and Ubuntu), but I have something special in mind. I looked around the forum to see if there was anything like what I had or if it was even possible but I didn't see anything quite like this.I was wondering if this was even possible, and if so, would anyone be able to tell me what filesystem I should use for my windows swap partition?

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to install Ubuntu 9.10 x64 from a Live CD the installer freezes or quits when trying to partition the drive. I tried booting into the Live environment and using GParted but that would only let me make a ReiserFS partition without crashing. With the Reiser partition I tried the installation program again but this time the installer froze when trying to install the files.
My system specs are:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (3.0GHz)
4GB RAM
500GB SATA2 HDD
ATI Radeon HD 4770
Currently it also has a second SATA2 HDD with Windows 7 installed but I disconnect this during installations
I have (3) 60GB SSD. I want to use (2) in RAID 0 for Ubuntu and (1) alone for Windows 7.
What is the best way to get about this? I know how to create the RAID 0 array with the (2) disks and install Ubuntu on it. But how do I get the RAID array with Linux on it to dual boot with Windows 7?

I have a computer with windows xp on it, and i want to dual boot with fedora 11. I have 2 hard drives in it, 1 500gb HD and 1 350gb HD. the 350 isnt much concern b/c its just sitting there all free and unpartitioned right now. Now my 500gb is split into 3 partitions, a 20gb(with xp installed on it) a 105 gb with pretty much nothing on it and a 350gb with all my data.
My problem is I'm trying to resize my 20gb partition through the fedora 11 installer and when I tell it to resize say to 10gb it starts and fails the resize. its a NTFS partition and the windows stuff on the partition is only about 8gb. any idea whats going on? the only error I get is "The resize has failed"
I set up an array of 2 hhd in raid0 using intel ICH7R, and i have a win7 installed on it. I'd like to have a dual boot with karmic, too. I googled a little bit and i found that it's not so easy as i thought. Are there anyone who's experiencing my same situation?

Currently I have windows 7 x64 installed on a pair of raided ssd's using an x58 motherboard(ich10r) and I want to duel boot ubuntu x64 (either 9.10 or 10.04) on another harddrive (not part of the raided ssd's). Does anyone know if this can be done? I haven't found anything out there about this. I have tried to install Ubuntu from the CD. It gets to the install screen booting from the CD, but it doesn't let me install or try Ubuntu. I hit enter and nothing happens. I can look through all of the options but can't install or boot into Ubuntu.
