I have been away from Linux for a couple years. Burned ISO of 10.04. Is there an option during install to let the installer automatically set up the dual-boot?In the past I have partitioned the hard drive manually, set up home, boot, swap, etc. Now I am lazy. Will the Ubuntu installer create/resize partitions needed?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a computer with windows xp on it, and i want to dual boot with fedora 11. I have 2 hard drives in it, 1 500gb HD and 1 350gb HD. the 350 isnt much concern b/c its just sitting there all free and unpartitioned right now. Now my 500gb is split into 3 partitions, a 20gb(with xp installed on it) a 105 gb with pretty much nothing on it and a 350gb with all my data.
My problem is I'm trying to resize my 20gb partition through the fedora 11 installer and when I tell it to resize say to 10gb it starts and fails the resize. its a NTFS partition and the windows stuff on the partition is only about 8gb. any idea whats going on? the only error I get is "The resize has failed"
I've just installed Fedora (F13) for the first time, on a new HDD, to give myself a dual-boot system. So currently I have:
So, at the appropriate stage in the install menu, there is an option for where to install GRUB, and a drop-down to choose which drive is the primary BIOS boot drive.
However, in both cases, no other drive except my new sdc is visible. So, I can install GRUB to MBR of sdc, or to first sector of boot partition - but no option to put it to my primary boot drive MBR on sda.
Likewise, in the GRUB configuration page, if I go to Add another OS, the only option it gives me is my new Fedora install. It doesn't list the Vista OS on sda at all.
The result is that I can boot to either OS by changing the boot drive priority in BIOS.
I guess my question is this:
- is this expected behaviour from the installer, meaning that I'll need to configure GRUB manually somehow? (gulp ) or
- did I do something wrong in the install process? or
- is this some weird bug manifesting itself?
I have Windows 7 and Fedora 14 both on my laptop in dual boot configuration. When my computer starts up it shows a screen that says press any button to select another operating system to start, then I can make Windows 7 start. But after 2 seconds, if I DON'T press any button then Fedora starts automatically. How can I change this so Windows starts automatically when I don't press any button?

Basically, I have two hard drives: sda, a 160GB HDD which has Windows 7 on it, and is the one I would like to put kubuntu on; and sdb, which is a plain 500GB NTFS file system I keep all my personal stuff on.When I get to 'disk setup' and choose 'install side-by-side', it defaults to sdb instead of sda and I can't change it. I've created a 20GB partition on sda, which is where I want to put kubuntu, but it still defaults to sdb. I also can't figure out how to install to where I want using the advanced partitioning menu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble getting grub to automatically boot into ubuntu server. When I turn on my server the grub menu shows up and shows me the choices. They all work fine except that grub wont automatically select one. This wouldn't be too much of a problem but this is a headless server and I can't boot into ubuntu without a keyboard. I tried looking through the grub 2 documentation but nothing seemed to work when I edited the conf file.

The installation went ok but when Ubuntu said it needed to restart to complete, now my pc just loads windows 7 everytime. It doesnt give me an option of choosing Ubuntu. I know the install worked because when I look at my drive in windows it is the partitioned size. Any way to manually launch Ubuntu?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have XP on my IDE hard drive and Ubuntu on my USB hard drive (which is really an IDE drive with a USB adapter and external power souce). We've used Windows once in the past month, so we decided to jettison it. Two questions: 1. Can we simply delete all partiitions on the IDE hard drive and reformat or will this cause problems? 2 Is the write-speed gain worth switching the drives out, putting the Ubuntu drive in my IDE slot and my freshly wiped drive on the USB adapter?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am quite experienced user of Ubuntu desktop / server distributions. Recently my desktop 9.10 disk failed and I decided to reinstall using 10.04. My configuration is a dual disk dual bot system. I have XP Pro SP3 on one disk and Ubuntu 10.04 on second. XP has own, untached MBR ubuntu got Grub 2 installed on the same disk as Ubuntu. Ubuntu disk is booting first in BIOS. Grub 2 detected both system, however I can boot only to Ubuntu. When I am trying to boot XP I got black screen only. Looks like booting is stack in BIOS stage, because crt+alt+del reset system.
I read Ubuntu forum, search Google and did not come with any solutions. My XP MBR is OK. I can boot directly, choosing XP HDD in BIOS as a starting disk. All entries in grub.cfg looks fine to me. I made 3 different clear installations of Ubuntu. Each with the same result. I reinstaled Grub2 with no effect. I wonder if this may be a hardware/Grub 2 compatibility issue. I am using quite old components.My motherboard is Assus P4C800 Delux. I have 5 HDDs 2 CD. Exactly the same configuration was OK with 9.10/XP dual disk dual boot using Grub legacy.

I currently have a dual boot on my 160gb hdd, but even that feels cramped. i was wondering...I have a spare 40gb harddrive compatible with my laptop. could I just install the windows 7 installation there?
assumably i'd swap in the appropriate windows 7 hdd whenever i'd want to load windows 7 at Grub.

Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /boot
If I switch off and restart, ubuntu will then start without issue.
My setup is like this ....3 disks, one with 10.10 clean install - so Grub2, separate partitions for /, /boot and /home, one with windows 7, one with windows XP and 10.04 wubi (this is my old disk which I will trash once I'm happy with my upgrade to 10.10 & 7 on separate disks.
I installed 7 and 10.10 with ONLY their disks installed. After both were working, I added all disks and rejigged the grub2 menu (using update-grub and StartUp-Manager).
This problem only seems to occur if my previous boot was not 10.10 ( I will investigate this further). It's as if something (grub2 ?, the bios ?) is remembering part of the previous boot and not using the grub2 menu completely.
I am using Fedora 15 with dual monitors. I want to make an application open automatically on the second monitor. In particular I would like to make Firefox open on the second monitor. For now I am just manually moving Firefox to the second monitor, but if I close it down and open it again, it automatically opens on the first monitor. Is there a way to make it automatically open on the second monitor?
I have two Nvidia cards in my machine. I did have one monitor connected to each video card, but I was unable to get a dual monitor set up to work like this, so I plugged both monitors into one card and the dual monitor set up works fine like. Is there a way to make dual monitors work if you have a monitor connected to each video card? When I had a monitor connected to each video card, I could see the second monitor in the Nvidia settings, but it always disabled it. I could enable it, but it would grey out twin view. After I enabled it, I'll restart the X server, the second monitor would auto disable again.
I'm using Gnome, I don't have the above issue in Xfce4 - it works fine with one monitor connected to each card in Xfce4. However, I want to use Gnome. I've searched, but have not been able to find a solution to either of these issues. I read you can fix the application to launch in a second monitor with wmctrl. I've tried to install it with yum, but I get the message: No package wmctrl available.
The Karmic installers for ARM CPUs are .img files that are meant to be written directly to Flash media, rather than .iso files that are meant to be burned to CD.
I'd like to run the ARM port of Karmic under the QEMU hardware emulator. This should be possible, because the .img files are sector-for-sector images of a hard disk drive. But when I try, I get a panic because the kernel can't mount the root filesystem.
I think the problem is that hard drives are provided by QEMU by emulating an IDE controller, whereas the ARM .image files are meant to be run from a USB stick. Those are accessed via SCSI rather than IDE.
Perhaps my problem is that the kernel I'm using with QEMU doesn't contain an IDE controller. It appears that QEMU doesn't provide a SCSI emulation, just IDE. An alternative would be to convert the .img installer file to a bootable CD-ROM image. Is there a way I can do that? Here is my command line:

I've spent a frustrating afternoon trying to install Xubuntu 10.04 x64. I had already installed Win7 Pro 64, and have been attempting to install on a separate hard drive. It wouldn't even boot into Xubuntu install. Figured a bad burn on the Cd so I reburned the image I had down loaded using Ktorrent. It wouldn't boot either. I swapped out the DVD burner. Still no go. Redownloaded using Ktorrent including the torrent. Wouldn't boot into the installer.
I did a fresh burn. Still it wouldn't boot to the installer. I then downloaded Xubuntu again but from a mirror and not using Ktorrent. Good MD5SUM. Burned it again on another computer. Still wouldn't boot into the installer. I burned a copy of Kubuntu 10.04 x64 and it installed with no difficulty. I've installed Xubuntu 10.04 x86 several times on other computers win no difficulty. But I have 8 Gb of RAM on this machine and want to use Xubuntu 64.
Trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on new Apple Macbook Air 3.2 with USB key. I'm able to partition and install REFIT fine, but when I tell REFIT to boot from the USB key, it goes to black and says "boot error".I then tried dd'ing the USB key partition to a local partition on the Macbook Air and booting that via a suggestion from another thread. It actually started loading the purple Ubuntu bootsplash-looking background then went straight to black even before the screen to select "try" or "install". Anyone know how to get the install USB to boot?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu lots of times on my UEFI computer without any troubles. The last few days, I've been trying to install Debian Jessie on my computer. I do the steps bellow:
- Download the corresponding iso (amd64).
- Create a UEFI bootable USB drive with Rufus.
- With Safe boot, Fast boot and CSM disabled, I boot to the USB drive.
I expect to see something like this:
But what I get is this:
I'm using an Asus PC. GL550JK. The UEFI version is 205 (from Asus Support website).
Things I've tried:
- Booting with CSM on => Same behaviour. It's not my intention to install debian with CSM on, though.
- Using Wheezy instead of Jessi => Same behaviour.
I tried to boot the net installer (debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso) from a flash drive (installed with dd). When I tried to boot that, my BIOS skipped the flash drive, which I had set the flash drive as the first boot device. So, I put it on a CDRW, and got the same result. I also tried the offline installer (debian-504-amd64-CD-1.iso) using both of those methods, with the same results. I verified the MD5SUM of this download. I am installing on a computer with a 64 bit Pentium 4 Prescott, if it matters. I have no other working OS on the computer. What other options do I have? Or am I doing something wrong?

As reported by the docs [URL] .... there are some boot parameters available for the Debian Installer.
I would like to try a setup setting the base-installer/install-recommends to false.
This can be done via preseeding, but I'd like to try it out setting the boot parameter.
I've tried several combinations but no one has been effective.
What is the syntax for setting the base-installer/install-recommends parameter to false at boot time?
I am trying to install Debian 5 on an Everex NM3500W Stepnote with a VIA chipset and integrated S3 graphics. The initial screen comes up, but when I click "install" it just prints the "booting..." message and sits there with the DVD spinning. Are there any particular problems know for this model? Any particular commands that might let the installer boot?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows XP system, and wanted to install Ubuntu to a 100 GB XT3 partition on the same drive. I was told I could chainload Ubuntu from the NT Loader menu. I booted from a Ubuntu 10.04 CD and ran the installer. It didn't find any hard drives. On a hunch, I tried the 10.04 alternate installer CD. That DID find the hard drive and partitions. I had the installer make /dev/sda7 (the XT3 partition) the root. Installation proceeded smoothly, but then the installer told me it did not see any other OS's on my drive! Why? I directed the installer to place grub on /dev/sda7 instead of the MBR.
Per the instructions I was given, I used DD to copy the first 512 bytes of /dev/sda7 to the Windows primary partition (sda1) as bootloader.lnx. But the resulting file is empty, and it won't boot. I repeated the whole process - formatting, installing FOUR times, and same results. I have no idea where GRUB was installed. It is apparently not in the MBR, because I still have my normal Windows boot. I downloaded the 10.10 alternate installer and got the same exact results. Even switched from XT3 to XT4. After two weeks of this nonsense, I still have yet to see Linux boot.
I'm trying to reinstall Debian on one of my machines after an unsuccessful install of FreeBSD (it didn't jive with my ssd). Debian installations have never been a problem before on this particular setup before but now for some reason it won't get past the "Debian GNU/linux installer boot menu". The USB goes into idle mode and the menu does not respond to keyboard strokes. I've tried several debian images to no avail. Ubuntu seems to work just fine though but I don't want to install Ubuntu just because Debians having some problems. I booted ubuntu live and reformated the SSD I had tried to install FreeBSD on because there were no partition tables on it but that didn't work either. I'd like some expert input before I go do another `dd`.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHave just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.
In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.
Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.
The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.
I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.
After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!
When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.
I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!
Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".

I have a jpeg file on my Windows system that won't delete. However, when I try to boot into safe mode to delete it, I can not get into the menu to select "Safe Mode". F8 just boots me right into Ubuntu.I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 5520.
