Ubuntu :: Installer Encountered Error Copying Files To Hard Disk
Oct 18, 2010
I have about 170 Gigabyte free at the last of my hard. I have windows 7 and suse linux installed on the machine. When I try to install ubunto. I start to create the partitions manually because I want to add it as a third operating system on my PC. Anyway I create the 4 partitions /boot - / - /var - /home. Automatically it choose to install the boot on sda not sda 9 as the /boot was sda9. I click install.
It gives me this message "The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:
[Errno 5] Input/output error
This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment." I burn another cd and do the same ... the same problem.
I try to create the partitions at the end of the hard disk not the beginning although I am sure that there is no error in the hardware but the same message. Lastly I change the boot to be created in sda 9. The same problem, when I do everything. I download Linux mint another operating system and do the same points. The same error message appeared by the way the boot is being damaged after restarting and I have to fix it from suse linux cd.

Each time, different methods, I get this about 3/4 of the way through:
The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:
[Errno 5] Input/output error
This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.
The only possibility of those is the CD being bad. But I've used it before, recently, and it was fine. I will burn another one from my other computer and try, but it shouldn't be doing this.
Question: If I plan to only use Ubuntu on this computer (no dual boot) should I make the /,swap and /home partitions all Primary or some logical, or does it even matter?

"The installer encountered an eror copying files to the hard disk: [Errno 30] Read-only file system
This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. ..."
Before I try changing CD drives, re-formatting the hard drive (again), or cleaning the CD drive, I must add that Xubuntu did open. I got rid of all traces of the previous operating system (WinME), and Xubuntu seems to work pretty well. The installation stopped at 41% of copying files. Should I aim for a finished installation or is this fine?

I have an Asus eee 1000. Was running Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix quite happily for some months until recently when I had some problems and decided to reinstall. Unfortunately that is when my real problems began. I have tried using various CD.s with Ubuntu 10.04 desktop and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook remix.
Both give the same error - The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk: [Errno 5] Input/output error
I tried using an SD card to install - that also gave errors. I tried installing Windows as much as I hate it and, annoyingly, that installed without any problems whatsoever. Then I tried using the Alternate Install disc. That gave me a different error - did everything and apparently installed a "basic" system but failed to install software. Struggled to find an answer to that. How I can get Ubuntu 10.04 back on my netbook. As it stands at the moment I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that I will have to install Windows or buy a new netbook - this seems preposterous!
I have seen that many people have this error and so it seems like some sort of bug. The only clue I had is that I did succeed in installing Ubuntu on my second 32 GB SD (the netbook has two (an 8 GB and a 32 GB). Unfortunately this SD appears much slower than the first so I erased it and went back to trying to get it on the 8 GB as before. Now it won't install on either - gives the same error. I do not believe that both my SD.s can be faulty and so I can only assume that somehow they both need erasing or formatting or something before I can reinstall.

I've set up my parents' machine running KDE 4.5 and want them to use the Gwenview import function from the Device Manager popup when transferring image files off photo CDs or other inserted media, since it's the easiest method for them to comprehend. All the files on their photo discs are r-xr-xr-x by default so they're unable to rotate or modify the images once copied to their hard disk. I want to set one specific images folder on their system to automatically force any files placed there to be rw-r--r-- (and rw-rw-r-- for another shared images directory elsewhere). It seems that umask won't work since that can only take permissions away and not add them, and I'd rather avoid getting into messy ACL configuration. Is there a way to achieve this either generically or some hidden config in Gwenview itself? I use KRename myself for such tasks but this is way too complex for my parents to understand so I need something that works without them having to do anything.

I'm a first time user of xubuntu or any other linux derivative operating system and I was wondering if I could get some assistance on installing xubuntu 11.04 on my old laptop. When I downloaded the iso and burned it into a DVD+R, I inserted it into the machine and let it ran. It started well and I checked the disc's integrity before continuing with the installation and it passed that. Now, as I enter the installation screen, I select my language then click forward but the installer freezes for a few minutes and later disappears only to be replaced with an error message, "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again." and it does as it says and boots into a demo mode. I try installing again through the "Install Xubuntu.." link on the desktop but it follows the same problem.
My laptop's specifications are as follows:
ACER TRAVELMATE 290
256 RAM (240 usable)
Intel Pentium M processor 1500 MHz 599 MHz
Video card: 64 MB internal Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller
Sound card: Realtek AC97 Audio

I seldom mess with Wubi because I prefer a true dual-boot but due to a recent reply in the following bug report I thought it might benefit Colin Watson to have a first hand source of the problem:[URL]Then "bcbc" replied in post #273 and shortly after the thread was closed Now, I've had precious little time to do much testing and such lately due to an overdue remodel that was needed due to a kitchen fire over two years ago, and weather related problems have just nailed me big time to-boot, so I'm sorry if I seem more scatter brained than usual, but such is life.
Anyway, I did as "bcbc" suggested but it appears that Verbose Mode is no longer supported in 10.04 Wubi I do not currently have a working camera to take a shot of the options provided if hitting Esc after the initial install but it just drops me to a grub> prompt.I've tried disabling every bit of the Win XP security, defragging, reducing and increasing the default size of the Wubi install, etc, etc, etc!Any Wubi experts out there?I'd like to test for regression regarding those grub2 updates but I can't unless I can install 10.04 Wubi on this test machine Also, I can't currently network more than one computer, so ssh is just not possible. I have no room! The moral of that story is to NEVER live in a home while you're remodeling

I am trying to install KUbuntu and the installer is struck at "copying files." The first time the installation went fine besides grub not booting properly. So I went ahead and tried to reinstall Kubuntu and now the installer hangs at 15-23% at copying files. I've already erased a bunch of partitions and told the installer to install the OS on "the largest contiguous free space" and it still hangs. To be honest I haven't allowed to it hang at 23 percent for more than one hour. The CD is not the issue as I've tried both Kubuntu and Ubuntu installers with the same result.

I tried to install 64bit 10.04 Release Candidate but it fails every time. I have been using 64bit 9.10 Karmic on this computer so it's suitable for installation.
I tried to install from USB stick and from CD but same error at the same point! It fails just befere it starts to ask your locations etc...
There must be something totally wrong on installer. Checksums are ok etc...
Errors seen with CD and USB stick installation: Pop up: "Istalltion failed The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again."
On command line I can see following error message on CD:

after installing Ubuntu on one WD 500 GB hard disk and after making mistake and pasting wrong code into Terminal:my OTHER WD 500 GB hard disk that was also in the system (I guess it was "hd1") - died. The problem must be, I guess, I typed wrong code: "hd1,1" instead of "hd0,0".)500 GB (NTFS) of data was on that other (non-Ubuntu) hard disk, and now I can not access it anymore. While booting, system gives "Hard Disk Error" warning and stops. One again: I installed Ubuntu od one hard disk and at the end of instalation I pasted wrong code for GRUB, giving address of another hard disk. Now that other hard disk has error and will not work

The Install program is failing to see the hard disk!
Now heres the really weird bit. The live cd can see the drive just fine.
I have created partitions using gparted and the disktool also sees the drive just fine but as soon as I go back to the installer it shows no hard disk!
It's a SATA drive which I suspect might be a part of the problem.
Is there a way I can install without the install program?
Is there a way to make the install program see the drive?
This is ubuntu 9.10 desktop.

I have a ssd cosair harddisk with both usb and sata connecters. If I connect it with sata anything is working fine, and I managed to install Fedora core 13.
But I also want to be able to use the harddisk when it is connected with usb and that causes problems.
When I boot the Fedora Core 13 dvd It can't detect my usb harddisk.
When booting in install mode it just don't detect the harddisk.
When booting the dvd in rescue mode it don't detect the harddisk, and it don't create any entries in /dev/ for the harddisk. It is like there is no disk at all.
I have tested this on 3 different computers, so it is not a problem with my specific motherboard. So either it is a problem between my harddisk and Fedora Core 13, or there is some problems with the usb drivers in the boot image used by the Fedora core 13 dvd.
The disk is working fine if I connect it via usb to an existing Windows install, so the usb connection is working.
I installed Fedora core 13 with the harddisk connected to sata and then re-connected the harddisk to usb. It then boot up, but complain about missing root filesystem. Most likely caused by missing usb driver in my kernel.
But anyway, what I really want is the ability to boot from both sata and usb, so I can take the harddisk with me and boot it on other computers with usb.
So is there a command which allows me to build an kernel image which can boot from usb or am I trying to do something which is not really supported?
I did update my fstab to use LABEL=myroot
There is 1 Windows partition(NTFS) and 1 linux partition on the disk. (No seperate /boot partition and no swap)

My PC configuration is as follows:
CPU: AMD Athlon II 245 X2
RAM: 2GB DDR2
MB: ASUS M2A74-AM
SATA DVD-Writer
WD 320GB SATA HDD.
SATA Controller is in AHCI mode in BIOS.
Partition Table:
1. Pri. (Windows 7 Ultimate)
2. Log. (Data)
3. Log. 15GB free space (want to install Linux in this partition)
I want to install Debian 5.0.4 from DVD. But the installer is not showing any partitions, it says entire hard disk is blank. But I ran 'fdisk -l' in the console, it shows the partitions correctly.

I got a problem with the motherboard of my computer and now I need to get some files out from the hard drive (an ext3 partition). I can access the files from another computer but because of the permissions of my user it doesn't let me copy the files over to another drive.
my computer was running Kubuntu 8.10 with a Vista dualboot. I also tried attaching the hard drive to another laptop, but because of the video drivers the display doesn't function properly.

I have a .swf file that I was going to play, but when I try to open it, totem (which apparently is my .swf program) says "GStreamer encountered a general supporting library error." Now since I know a little bit about linux, I opened up a terminal and redirected the stderr and stdout to a file called "error". Then I read the file and it said:
** Message: Error: GStreamer encountered a general supporting library error.
gstffmpegdemux.c(1243): gst_ffmpegdemux_open (): /GstPlayBin2lay/GstURIDecodeBin:uridecodebin0/GstDecodeBin2:decodebin20/ffdemux_swf:ffdemux_swf0:
Input/output error
So then I interpreted that as meaning that there was a library called "gstffmpegdemux.c" that needed replacing. So I tried using synaptic to replace. Then Synaptic wouldn't let me get the package, Though I could see it existed (I would put up a screenshot, but for some reason it won't let me upload) then I tried aptitude, which claims it doesn't exist, and then apt-get which also claims that it doesn't exist.

Having trouble installing 'Squeeze' 6.0.1a-amd64-netinst on a new AMD64 system. The installer boots and runs fine until it gets to hard disk detection. Then it hangs for about 20 minutes showing a blue screen, during which time the HDD-activity light flickers every 5 seconds. Eventually it says it can't detect a hard disk, and displays a (longish) list of possible drivers; no idea which, if any, would suit.Anyone else installed (successfully or otherwise) on this combo?

I have two USB 2 external hard drives. I want to copy about 30 gigs of data from one to another. What command line command do I use ? I was thinking of using cp with the -R and -n options, but I have no idea what devices to refer to. I can't find any external hard drives in /etc/fstab and I'm not sure what /dev device each USB external hard drive uses. I just want to copy the files and the directories that they are in just as they are. There are no links and I do not want to do a backup.

I'm a Linux newbie and are trying to install F13 from bootable USB onto the HD of a DELL mini netbook. I've followed the install wizard's defaults including the "Use All Space option." The install errors out at about 20% of progress during the "Copying live image to hard drive" process. The error dialog is as followed:"There was an error installing the live image to your hard drive. This could be due to bad media. Please verify your installation media..." and it comes with options to Exit installer or Retry. I have since retried and restarted several times and still came to the same error. FYI, I've initially attempted to install F13 to the HD over an existing Windows XP.
